    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to explore possible effects for learning when a manufacturing plant takes a double role, as being both master plant and apprentice plant, in a globally distributed industrialization process. Industrialization is here understood as the process of preparing new products for volume manufacturing. Two research questions are addressed. The first is what characterizes the dual roles. The second concerns how the dual roles affect knowledge integration and learning processes, and whether this arrangement facilitates learning between master and apprentice. Based on a study of a global telecom equipment company, the paper provides insights into some of the challenges and effects of dynamic switching of roles. By separating the network function from the strategic role of the plant, the study identifies four options for learning. The case adds to the literature on learning in manufacturing networks and to previous research on how distributed processes affect innovation capability.

Senior managers’ perspectives on obstacles to Lean implementation2016In: International Journal of Lean Enterprise Research, ISSN 1754-2294, E-ISSN 1754-2308, Vol. 1, no 4, p. 317-328Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many lean implementations fail; previous research suggests an important reason is that senior managers are unable to support the implementation. We investigate this problem by exploring senior managers' perspectives on lean implementation, aiming to identify possible obstacles to their support of implementation processes. The paper is based on an explorative case study at a global manufacturing company implementing lean. Interviews were performed with senior managers at the top two hierarchical levels, the president and area presidents. The analysis revealed four main obstacles: 1) competence development needs of senior management were not addressed; 2) the lean development initiative was not connected to company strategy; 3) key players within the organisation were initially not involved or tasked; 4) the initiative was not system wide. The results stress the importance of initial competence evaluation and development of senior management in lean development.

Exploring the paradox of openness in high tech and low tech industries2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Firms relying on external sources of knowledge for innovation may encounter a paradox of openness concerning the need to both share and protect knowledge in collaborations. Based on an international survey of manufacturing firms this study attempts to illustrate various forms of the paradox by investigating the effects firms’ openness has on appropriability and performance in high and low tech industries. Findings reveal that the paradox is more likely to occur in the high tech industry cluster, thus hinting towards additional challenges firms in this cluster face in practice and underlining the need to include the technological dimension when researching the paradox. Moreover, in the majority of openness-appropriability combinations where we find a potential paradox of openness, firms do not succeed to overcome the paradox. The one exception in our sample is for the high tech firms when collaborating with suppliers and using formal appropriability. By pinpointing the different forms of the paradox this study also contributes to the ongoing debate concerning the role of intellectual property mechanisms in inbound open innovation.

Lean Practices and the Adoption of Digital Technologies in Production2019In: International Journal of Services and Operations Management, ISSN 1744-2370Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The use of Lean principles has long enabled the improvement of efficiency and competitiveness in manufacturing firms, but during the last decade, advanced digital and automated solutions have been more in the spotlight. It has been suggested by some authors that Lean and digitalisation are mutually exclusive, although most authors now agree that the two are indeed compatible. It thus seems that the most urgent question is not whether Lean and digital technologies can be combined, but rather how. This paper uses a large-scale survey of manufacturing units in Europe to explore the relationship between three types of Lean production practices and the use of digital technologies in production. The analysis shows that three types of Lean practices – Lean flow, Lean work organisation and Lean human resource management – are strongly associated with firms’ adoption of digital technologies in production by manufacturing firms. Based on the results it is suggested that, as a theoretical explanation, a firm’s experience of Lean may act as an absorptive capacity when adopting digital technologies. A number of practical explanations are also provided, e.g., that systematic improvement efforts are also beneficial when implementing digital technologies.

Lean practices as requisites for the use of digital technology in production2016In: Proceedings of the 23rd EurOMA conference: Trondheim, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Lean production principles has for a long time been hailed as a solution for improving efficiency and competitiveness in manufacturing firms. Recently, however, advanced digital solutions have received more space in the spotlight. Does this mean that the era of Lean is over or just changed character? The purpose of this paper is to, based on a large scale survey of manufacturing units in Europe, explore the relationship between the use of Lean production practices and the technological practices associated with the use of digital technologies in production. The study shows that lean practices are strong predictors of firms’ introduction of digital technologies in production by manufacturing firms. The results indicate that lean, as defined in this paper, may indeed be a prerequisite for digital technologies used in production.

Supply Chain Strategies Beyond The Peak2013In: Proceedings of the 20th International AnnualEurOMA conference, Dublin, Ireland, 9-12 June 2013, 2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When customer demand becomes increasingly volatile and product life cycle shortens, a capability to dynamically adjust the supply chain during the product life cycle becomes more urgent. The study’s purpose is to extend knowledge of dynamic supply chain design and management when the product is in the decline phase of its life cycle. A case study from a global telecom company reveals several challenges for supply chain management and solutions for handling these challenges when a product is beyond the peak. The findings are summarized in a tentative model that specifies supply chain challenges and strategies over the life cycle.
