The aim of the study is to create a knowledge base, identify the Network Integrators, and with reference to previous studies conducted in the packaging industry, analyse the development for packaging suppliers.

    Today’s trends are the ever growing competition with increasedglobalization and sustainability. Together with ongoing technologicaldevelopments it has made it easier to demand right quality of products andservices, this has also resulted in increased demands for legislation andtraceability. This development has also an impact on packaging andpackaging logistics.This dissertation deals with packaging, logistics and performance whenpackaging interacts with users and take a standpoint by finding answers tothe research question: How can a systematic and holistic approach topackaging increase the logistics performance to create efficiency andeffectiveness?The purpose of this work is to increase knowledge regarding the packagingand its interacting role with agents in the Supply-Demand Chain in orderto improve Packaging Logistics Performance. Further the thesis aims toincrease knowledge in the area of Packaging Logistics Performance.Performance in packaging logistics is about doing the right thing andthings right as well as position products and services relative to itscompetitor. 

    A model has been created to increase knowledge of packaging logisticsperformance, which covers interaction between packaging system with itsusers. This also model includes the tool. 'Packaging Scorecard' thatmeasures the packaging logistics performance and shows the packagingrelateddeficiencies that exist in various levels of the value chain.Furthermore, the tool developed to enable efficient product development.The developed model will provide support for the development ofpackaging strategies to change the existing systems or develop newsystems. The strategies also take into account the agents involved in thesupply-demand chain by demonstrating the requirements on the packagingand how small changes in the packaging system contributes to a significantimprovement in the value chain. Theoretical tool enables a betterintegration between in picking up the desired packaging informationinteracting with the agents and the right knowledge on packaging can behandled more efficiently.New functions and roles for companies operating in the various logisticprocesses were identified for example the research has identified a newtype of service the Network Integrator that manages integrate the supplychain with the demand chain. This function was also identified in thepackaging area and this agent named the Packaging Integrator. 

    To increase understanding of the Supply-Demand Chain the toolCATWOE (Customer, Agents, Transformation processes, World view,Owners and Environment) was applied. This tool futher developed for toadapt with packaging logistics performance and complexity theory. Thegeneral methodology was action based research and case studies.The developed model illustrates packaging systems and how they performin order to create conditions for better and more efficient packaginglogistics performance. The thesis explores and presents ways to improvethe opportunities that co-operate for better packaging, and integration ofvalue chains.Research in theoretical contribution is to demonstrate knowledge ofpackaging systems, understanding the interactive roles and existingrequirements in the Supply-Demand-Chain. Practical contributions werethe valuable empirical knowledge and increased understanding ofpackaging requirements and its interactions with agent to create conditionsfor effectiveness, efficiency and differentiation.

    Packaperforma is a tool developed in order to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and differentiation in the future design of packaging systems. The tool is based on the theory Packaging Logistics Performance. Packaperforma is a further development of Packaging Scorecard and it could be utilized by packaging designers and supply chain managers to see the functions of the packaging system in the logistics processes. This means that the gap between packaging decisions and logistics decisions can be mitigated, as it can share the downstream information with the upstream and the designers. Packaperforma is used to conduct comparative studies in multiple Supply-Demand Chains. A study as such increases the quantity of data in the Packaperforma database that could be used to indicate the performances of the packaging, the agent and the Supply Demand Chains. The paper presents a study on Packaging Logistics Performance, how to evaluate packaging performance; how to collect feedback information from different agents and efficiently solve packaging related problem. Further the paper describes a web system based tool, packaging performance indicators and packaging performance database.

    Packaging Networks: a framework for integrating packaging suppliers in the demand chain2006Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The ability to understand packaging and how it contributes to the establishment of efficient logistics and the creation of individualised values for consumers is becoming increasingly important. This licentiate thesis stresses the importance of applying a holistic view of packaging in order to be able to understand how to adapt the distribution channel to meet consumer demands. The study focuses on the packaging, the suppliers of packaging and their current relations to the actors in the distribution channel, and how they can develop to play active roles in logistics. The objective of this work has been to explore the potentials for packaging suppliers to work as Network Integrators to increase efficiency and in at the same time contribute knowledge in logistics that will help to bridge gaps in packaging and logistics theory.The research has involved qualitative case studies of packaging and packaging suppliers. The field of logistics is developing rapidly. To examine this in depth, benchmarking studies were carried out, and the way in which this new knowledge can be applied in the packaging industry is discussed. The conclusion of this thesis is that there are gaps in the theory, and this work presents framework to strengthen the packaging and logistics theory. Further this work has identified the Network Integrator, an actor who can play a significant role to create efficiency in logistics.

    Abstract [sv]

    The purpose of this work was to study the packaging supplier and the integration of integrating packaging suppliers into the supply and demand chain (SDC). The packaging industry has been analyzed using a structured market analysis, and the companies studied have been positioned in an integration model for packaging suppliers. In addition, case studies were conducted to study the development of the packaging industry and its integration within the SDC in the Scandinavian region.

    The analysis shows that there are gaps in the business relations between the packaging companies studied and the SDC. Most of the packaging suppliers were not integrated into the SDC. Valuable information, available in the network, seldom reaches the packaging supplier who holds the knowledge necessary to create and offer innovative packaging solutions.

    The article provides an empirical exploration into the field of packaging, logistics and SDC integration and an original conceptual framework that could serve as a theoretical framework for future research work applied in the packaging industry and an interesting business model to the increase understanding of packaging supply chain integration.

    One important ongoing development in the grocery foods industry is the increase growth of Locally Produced Foods. This emerging market that based on the pillars of sustainability, demands new logistics challenges that requires innovative supply chain models . These chains are designed through the application of digitalized media. The paper presents an on-going study in establishing Network Integration for Locally Produced foods in Mid-Sweden Region. The objective of this study is to present an approach to explore locally produced foods. A case study based on logistics activities, supply chain management, packaging is presented. The data used in the study are from micro-producers of food, customers from local restaurants , consumers and the public sector from Mid-Sweden Region. The results indicates that th e main aspects of Network Integration actively contributes to better performance for this industry in almost all items considered in the study. This approach is considered particularly innovative, hence there are scarcity of literature that deals jointly with packaging, logistics and Network Integration from an empirical standpoint.

    This paper takes on the challenge to integrate packaging in a concept of four-dimensional concurrent engineering (4DCE). The purpose is to explore a conceptual model and empirically evaluate the specific performance of packaging in interrelation with product and processes in the Supply Chain (SC). The objectives are to better understand the concepts of packaging logistics and logistics management in the SC. The conceptual model 4DCE is developed based on the three-dimensional concurrent engineering theories.The tool Packaging Scorecard is applied to evaluate the concurrent performance of packaging throughout the SC. The packaging system involves many actors that are integrated into the 4DCE framework with focus on interaction of SC and logistics in relation to packaging and product, with the overall aim to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. In order to explore the potential of the 4DCE framework, empirical verification and testing of the concept has been carried out. The process has been done through multiple in-depth, action-oriented case studies in three different industries on the Swedish market. The case studies covered holistic aspects on the packaging system.The concept 4DCE contributes to packaging logistics theory by providing a framework for assessment incorporating complex and dynamic interactions between product, packaging, logistics and SC. Furthermore, the holistic packaging development concept is ensured by increasing knowledge of the packaging system and how it interacts with actors and performs to fulfil requirements along the SC. The 4DCE provides valuable data for packaging development processes in the cases, however there is a need for broader studies in different industries.

    Abstract [en]

    Corrugated package designers are focused on balancing the need for product protection, material use efficiency and the packaging material’s impact on the environment in the supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual sustainable packaging model that integrates the variables of technical design,supply chain systems and environmental factors and then use the model to identify to improve upon corrugated container design.

    A model was developed, from the extant literature, and a case study was performed on a corrugated container. This is believed to be a unique integrated model of most relevant agents related to the design and implementation of a corrugated box through a supply chain from design to potential post-consumer reuse.

    From this study, we found opportunities to improve the environmental design of the corrugated container through four ex ante design stages, and two ex post facto supply chain stages. Further, research can evaluateand refine this model via a ‘live supply chain’ for use in guiding corrugated box material selection designand reuse/recycling. Integration of the design criterion for a unit load in the supply chain creates opportunityto observe the packaging system holistically. Waste in the manufacturing process and CO2 emissions aretraced along the materialflow until the end of its useful life to provide an overall picture of the packaging system.

    To support a more holistic approach to the contribution of packaging to efficiency and value creation in the product supply chain, a systematic evaluation method Packaging Scorecard - has been developed and tested in two case studies. The Packaging Scorecard is based on research of functional criteria of packaging and the theories of Balanced Scorecard, a general management approach to evaluating organisational performance using different perspectives. The results of the case studies indicate that the method can be very useful to get a systematic overview of packaging performance throughout the product supply chain.
