    Abstract [en]

    In any successful business, it is important to establish a dedicated management with the ability to make critical and sustainable decisions. Policy makers are a major and perhaps the biggest factor in a company and usually it is the managers who are also decision-makers. There are a number of aspects to keep in mind in order to make as appropriate decisions as possible, which can be anything from personality traits to how market analytic decision-maker is.

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model for decision-making on sustainable logistics, in both manufacturing companies and service companies in Sweden. Literature studies and interviews are conducted in order to answer the purpose. Through the literary study, significant factors can be found, for example crisis management and trust, prejudice and character traits.

    This work’s empirical material is based on interviews in four different organizations regarding their decision making and their approach to sustainable logistics. These organizations are both service and manufacturing companies, which gives the work a breadth and generalizability.

    The identified factors that are developed through the case studies include emotionality and rationality, trust, and transparency. Several factors in the literature are clearly consistent with the significant factors in the study result. The factors that both the service and manufacturing companies have in mind when making decisions regarding sustainable logistics are presented in the results. The conclusion of this study is a model that visualizes the factors one should keep in mind when making decisions regarding sustainable logistics. These factors are trust, supplier selection, unity, facts, transparency and empathy. Based on these factors, any company with a dedication and commitment to long-term decision-making processes can make wise and effective assessments.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of implementing the Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) model in an MRO (maintenance, repair, and operations) partnership, and highlight its potential economic, environmental, and organizational benefits, as well as limitations.

    Approach - First, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on fields relevant to VMI. Second, empirical data was gathered from a single exploratory case study with Momentum Industrial, and its customer Stora Enso. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from the case companies.

    Findings - Results suggest that VMI results in benefits for the supply chain in general, such as reduced administration and inventory costs, improved service levels, reduced information distortion, and improved relationship among partners. For the particular case of VMI in an MRO partnership, improved service levels can be obtained by a reduced risk of production downtime for the customer. Moreover, the implementation of VMI has potential environmental benefits, such as reduced paper use, and higher transportation fill rate. Limitations of implementing VMI include the difficulty in system integration, and information sharing. Trust could be a potential issue that limits information sharing amongst supply chain partners. Moreover, the difference in organizational cultures and policies of partners should be taken into consideration.

    Limitations - The study is limited to opinions from one MRO customer in the paper and packaging industry. Even though the questions asked to informants in Momentum and Stora Enso tackled benefits to MRO customers in general, a broader image could have been achieved by interviewing customers from different industries. Moreover, the case companies do not currently adopt VMI in their partnership, so the case study results are based on what they think would be the potential benefits and limitations of implementing VMI in an MRO partnership.

    Practical Implications - This paper can serve as a guideline for logistics managers who are considering VMI in an MRO partnership specifically, as it provides them with the benefits and limitations associated with VMI. More generally, any company considering VMI can also benefit from the theoretical framework presented.

    The purchasing function has become a strategic position for most companies. Activity in an organization cannot be performed without the presence of the information, which means that communication is important for being able to perform a task or activity. Communication related to the purchasing process has been investigated at Gavlegårdarna, a real estate company located in Gävle. In this work, Gavlegårdarna wanted to examine whether there is an opportunity to improve communication and investigate factors that lead to a lack of communication. The purpose of this study was to get a general image and increase understanding of factors that affect communication. The study is based on a case study, where one interview took place in the purchasing department and a questionnaire sent out to people who work daily with purchasing function.

    To be competitive in the market, companies need to find and use available resources for improvements. Transport is a source to cost-effective and customer accessible logistics system. Both internal and externals transports are important to focus on when processes are optimized in order to obtain lower costs. The main logistics cost in many companies constitutes of transports.

     

    This case study has been conducted in an industrial company. This study intends to make the transports more effective, through better customer service and reduced costs. The transports that have been studied are not directly linked to the production. When a transport is needed an order is made by telephone.

     

    The purpose of the study is to identify significant factors for effective special transports. The factors form a foundation for recommendations to the case company in the future work to have more effective special transports. To answer the purpose literature studies, observations, data analysis, interviews and benchmarking have been carried out. Some significant factors for effective special transports are information, effective logistics and standardization. Some identified waste in the case company is lack of communication and information and the utilization of resources. The significant factors have a correspondence with the identified waste.

    Att hantera den interna logistiken när marknaden är volatil och rörlig kan vara svårt. När avdelningar på företag inte kommunicerar eller delar information med varandra gör det att bistående företagsfunktioner, som interna transporter, får svårt att planera sina processer gentemot produktionsfabriker och marknaden, vilket kan leda till resursslöseri. För att underlätta arbetet och planeringen för den interna logistiken krävs att rätt teknik och förhållningssätt finns.

    Detta arbete tar fram en metodik som undersöker vilka faktorer som finns för att effektivisera den interna logistiken, samt hur ett IT-stöd för effektivisering kan utformas. Fallstudien avgränsas till interna transportsystem för de produktionsfabriker där sidlastare och grensletruckar utför transporter.

    Genom fallstudien på företaget visade det sig att de bristfälliga områdena var integrering och samarbete, kommunikation samt standardiserat arbetssätt. Detta försvårar arbetet med den interna logistiken och gör att företagsfunktionerna inte är synkroniserade i arbetet. Den bristfälliga informationsdelningen om framtida beläggningar och prognoser gör att planeringen av interna transporter mot produktionsenheterna inte fungerar önskvärt.

    I den teoretiska referensramen framgår att faktorer som påverkar effektiviteten av internlogistik är IT-stöd, arbetssätt och rutiner, planering och kommunikation samt resursutnyttjande. IT-stöd är något som kan hjälpa företag inom de bristfälliga områdena och vara en start till att integrera ett företags processer för att förbättra kommunikationen och informationsdelningen, som i sin tur ger bättre förutsättningar för att planera bistående företagsfunktioner till ett bättre resursutnyttjande.

    Genom metodiken för att effektivisera den interna logistiken påbörjas ett första steg av ett IT-stöd genom att en EXCEL-modell skapas som ett underlag för planeringsprocessen av interna transporter på fallföretaget. EXCEL-modellen skapas genom sammanförandet av historiska data från transportavdelningen och produktionsfabrikerna. Metodiken kan vidare användas för framtida undersökningar för effektivisering av den interna logistiken på företag.

    Med e-handelns snabba expansion har även returerna ökat, returvolymen inom e-handel kan vara så hög som 50% (Dissanayake och Singh, 2007). Returer kostar inte bara pengar utan påverkar även miljön i form av bl.a. ökade transporter. De vanligaste returorsakerna inom modebranschen är storlek och passform vilket kan härledas till bristande produktinformation som t.ex. undermåliga storleksguider. Tidigare forskning om produktinformation har oftast berört vikten av produktinformation vid konsumentköp samt vilka egenskaper i produktinformationen som är viktiga. (Chiu et al, 2014; Manvai och Venkataram, 2005; Markopoulos, Arin och Ungar, 2016) Syftet med denna fallstudie är att undersöka hur produktinformationen påverkar antalet produktreturer hos e-handelsföretag i modebranschen. Studiens frågeställningar berör hur fallföretagen arbetar med produktinformation och om det har påverkat returvolymen samt fallföretagens hållbarhetsarbete. Studien är baserad på en kvalitativ metod och med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer med tre fallföretag besvaras studiens syfte och frågeställningar. Fallföretagen i denna studie arbetar med försäljning inom modebranschen, två av dessa är stora företag och har både fysiska butiker och e-handel. Det tredje fallföretaget är ett mindre företag som enbart har e-handel. Studien visar att fallföretagen får samma gynnsamma effekt av arbetet med produktinformation även om drivkraften bakom arbetet är olika. Studien visar även att produktinformationen kan ses som en kanal för att effektivt förmedla hållbarhetsarbete till kunderna. Studien bidrar med bredare kunskap om produktinformation samt att studien kan ligga till grund för vidare forskning om produktinformationens inverkan på returer. Studien styrker även vissa delar av tidigare forskning inom returer i modebranschen.

    The distinction between innovative and functional products have for more than a decade been central to our understanding of how to design appropriate supply chains. However, the distinction between the two types of products, and the associated "optimal" supply chain, are blurring, as high competition forces commodity producers to move up the value chain and increase the innovative content of their products. The purpose of this paper is to use a single case study to test whether established supply chain models can be applied to an innovative commodity producer. The paper finds that although some established model still have merits, a supply chain strategy cannot only be based on product characteristics. Factors such ease of transport and uncertainties in materials supply needs to be taken into account and an effective supply chain may involve utilising decoupling point to combine the benefits of both efficient and responsive supply chains.

    Introduction: A supply chain has a mayor impact on company’s competitiveness and profitability, this fact has led to increased interest in efficiencys of supply chains. This bachelor degree consist a case study at Emballagetillverkaren where the supply chain was analysed between supplier and customer with the intention of reducing tied up capital and lead times.Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to find prerequisites for a effective material supply between supplier and customer.Method: In order to answer the purpose of this thesis a case company called Emballagetillverkaren and its customer has been investigated. The case company and the supply chain between supplier and customer were observed and interview questions were formulated based on the observations. Interviews and observations were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the problems of high tied up capital and long lead times.Results: A mapping of the current situation was established to clarify the methods of operation. The material and the information flow from both the case company and The Engeneering Company was mapped. The interviews have been devided into the categories "Planning and Forecasting", "Inventory and Materials" and "Communication".Conclusion:The prerequisites for effective material supply are an integrated and coordinated supply chain, healthy processes at work, the lean philosophy and its tools, supply chain efficiency, efficient and coordinated information and material flows, appropriate material supply method, inventory management, forecasts, good customer and supplier relationship and communication. As a conclusion we want to highlight forecasts, high resource utilization and communication to achieve a effective material supply between supplier and customer.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The research purpose is to, in a systematic way, build a method to develop suggestions regarding layout planning of gates in a marine terminal and additionally conduct a base for a simulation model.

    Approach: Firstly, a literature review has been conducted in the fields relevant to port security and gate configurations in marine terminals. Secondly, a case study has been executed in a Swedish marine terminal. The case study consisted of interviews and observations at the case company, who also provided this thesis with numerical raw data. Additionally, a benchmarking was conducted at a company in the same port area where interviews and observations was executed.  

    Findings: The findings in this thesis resulted in a methodology improvement, which contains important procedure steps that need to be considered while conducting a layout for a gate in a marine terminal. The procedure resulted in a conceptual model that was conducted as a result of the literature review and verified by being tested in the case study.

    Limitation: The thesis is limited to one case company. Even though it verified and validated the findings, additional case companies are recommended to fully validate the conceptual model which applies for further research. Further limitations to this thesis is that the financial- and technical factors will not be executed.  

    Theoretical implications: Companies who plans to increase the security in their marine terminal area or implement a new gate system can benefit from the findings. This thesis contributes to science by adding new theory.  

    Practical implications: This thesis conducted a conceptual model for a layout procedure which recommends to follow while planning a layout for a gate in a marine terminal. The model were verified with a case company and provided two layout suggestions that can be implemented at the specific company.

    Abstract [en]

    Most producing companies aim to reduce tied up capital, which is meant to increase inventory turnover. In this study, an EMS (Electronic manufacturing service) -company, a contract manufacturer, will be studied. The company does not own the products themselves, but is a service company that manufactures to customers. The business has a problem that existed for a long period of time, they have a low inventory turnover among their component inventory. The company therefore wants to increase its inventory turnover in order to reduce its tied-up capital. The aim is to develop knowledge about supplier and customer relationships that affect the stock turnover rate in component stocks. In order to make calculations, it is profitable for the company to order materials multiple times for increased inventory turnover or fewer times to keep down the order cost. Case study is based on qualitative data in the form of interviews and observations. A large part of this study is also based on quantitative data from the company's MRP (material requirements planning) system. The literature is based on articles that deals with key concepts such as EOQ (economic order quantity), customer and supplier relationships. The conclusion of this study suggests that the company should use EOQ to reduce overall order cost while reducing the tied-up capital.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper analyses the usage of the AHP-model to localize a freight consolidation center from a sustainable perspective. The AHP-model is a model that makes decisions easier by weighting various factors against each other according to given priorities. Once analyzed, the AHP-model has been applied to a case company in order to evaluate its effect and eventually see if the case companys localization decision was correct. 

    The case company in this paper is a large swedish company active both on the swedish market and internationally. They have a freight consolidation center located in Gävle, Sweden with the purpose of replenishing stock at company warehouses located in area A and area B. The company requires a transport lead time of less than one day. When the company chose to locate their freight consolidation center to Gävle, there were a few other options, namely area C and area D as well as a thir option located too far south in Sweden. 

    The conclusion of this paper shows that Gävle is the best area for the freight consolidation center out of the available options based on the companies priorities. Area C can not keep the leadtime below one day and area D does not have a port available. 

    It is still hard to define what is sustainable on a long term perspective when it comes to localization. Further research is therefore recommended in order to improve the model in a sustainable manner.

    The main topic of this thesis is to study the connection between Service Supply Chain Management (SSCM) and Customer Satisfaction (CS). The study is based on the factors of SSCM for receiving CS and its implementation.One of the major contributions to the connection between SSCM and CS has been the awareness to flexibly and efficiently manage logistics and deliver to the end user in time and at the same to achieve an increased brand image/reputation for the company. SSCM is an essential part of a company's inventory management and it's supply chain. On the other hand, CS is an integral part of a business as making consumers content and meeting their requirements is crucial for a business' survival. SSCM and CS are inextricably linked.In this thesis, Walmart has been used as the case for the authors to carry out the research. Because of the unique feature of the Chinese retail market, the Chinese retail market has been also discussed as the business background of Walmart. The first-hand data has been offered from interview by E-mail and social website to the staff of Walmart and 90 feedbacks of questionnaire. The literature review and qualitative analysis have been used to analyze the case for research. The importance of SSCM in dealing with CS and its implementation has been explored in this thesis.

    Transportation of goods has existed for a long period of time, and in today's society it has become increasingly common to employ a third-party logistics actor (TPL-actor) which manages all or part of a company's distribution.

    The case company in this study is a newly established TPL-actor which has not yet reached as many customers as desired. The case company offers a number of logistics services, such as storage, packing, transport, handling of flight goods and safety consulting.

     

    The purpose of this study is to identify and describe what requirements are important when selecting a TPL actor.

     

    A literature study have been conducted. Existing and potential customers of the case company have been interviewed. The study´is empirical material that consisted of interviews was compared and later, in a analysis, put up against the overall study to draw a conclusion.

     

    As for the findings, it consists existing customers as well as an interview with a potential customer. It appears in the interview that delivery security, price and customer service are the most occurring and crucial requirements when choosing a TPL-actor. Customer A and the potential customer are the only ones that mentions proximity as a significant factor. Information sharing is also another factor which is significant according to the respondents. Costumer A and the potential customer sees flexibility as a crucial requirement when choosing a TPL-actors as well. All existing customers and the potential customer values delivery security highly. Customer C considers that right resources and right attributes is a requirement placed on the TPL-actor which the potential customer agrees upon.

     

    As a conclusion, the main reason to why companies outsource the parts of their logistics management is to save money and focus on the core competence of the business. The most occurring requirements placed on TPL-actors according to the interviewed customers are, good delivery security, good price, good customer service, correct information sharing and good flexibility. Right resources, right attributes as well as high reliability are factors that are specific regarding the selection of TPL-actors, within air goods logistics.

    Compared to the highly developed logistics industry in USA, the Chinese logistics industry is still underdeveloped because of poor infrastructure and ineffective management capability. In terms of these realities, the most important bottleneck of the Chinese logistics industry is the last mile delivery problem, which holds the highest cost in the whole logistics process. To find ways to solve the problems with last mile delivery has become significant and urgent for Chinese logistics service providers.

    The purpose of the study is to deepen and enrich the knowledge on last mile logistics in China. This is carried out with the help of the case companies SF Express and Property Management Company together with an investigation of last mile delivery alternatives in China. Related to the research question, a case study was carried out focusing on one business process. The data collection methods used include: interview, telephone or email contact, and survey.

    Intelligent locker and the pick-up delivery solution could solve last mile logistics problems by different ways, especially with specific limitations in Chinese market. These delivery alternatives are highly possible to be adopted and generalized by different logistics service providers in China if not concerned about the cost or density of orders.

    The current business mode of supermarket in China cannot fulfill the demand from an overwhelming number of customers. Costs for both pick-up stations are acceptable, and the cost is a positive factor for pick-up station mode.

    The higher density of orders, the higher possibility of different time-window may require, and high competitive advantage of intelligent locker can be achieved. The high density of orders for intelligent locker is a positive factor. The cost for intelligent locker is a very negative factor, which seriously limits the popularization of this delivery alternative.

    Today’s trends are the ever growing competition with increasedglobalization and sustainability. Together with ongoing technologicaldevelopments it has made it easier to demand right quality of products andservices, this has also resulted in increased demands for legislation andtraceability. This development has also an impact on packaging andpackaging logistics.This dissertation deals with packaging, logistics and performance whenpackaging interacts with users and take a standpoint by finding answers tothe research question: How can a systematic and holistic approach topackaging increase the logistics performance to create efficiency andeffectiveness?The purpose of this work is to increase knowledge regarding the packagingand its interacting role with agents in the Supply-Demand Chain in orderto improve Packaging Logistics Performance. Further the thesis aims toincrease knowledge in the area of Packaging Logistics Performance.Performance in packaging logistics is about doing the right thing andthings right as well as position products and services relative to itscompetitor. 

    A model has been created to increase knowledge of packaging logisticsperformance, which covers interaction between packaging system with itsusers. This also model includes the tool. 'Packaging Scorecard' thatmeasures the packaging logistics performance and shows the packagingrelateddeficiencies that exist in various levels of the value chain.Furthermore, the tool developed to enable efficient product development.The developed model will provide support for the development ofpackaging strategies to change the existing systems or develop newsystems. The strategies also take into account the agents involved in thesupply-demand chain by demonstrating the requirements on the packagingand how small changes in the packaging system contributes to a significantimprovement in the value chain. Theoretical tool enables a betterintegration between in picking up the desired packaging informationinteracting with the agents and the right knowledge on packaging can behandled more efficiently.New functions and roles for companies operating in the various logisticprocesses were identified for example the research has identified a newtype of service the Network Integrator that manages integrate the supplychain with the demand chain. This function was also identified in thepackaging area and this agent named the Packaging Integrator. 

    To increase understanding of the Supply-Demand Chain the toolCATWOE (Customer, Agents, Transformation processes, World view,Owners and Environment) was applied. This tool futher developed for toadapt with packaging logistics performance and complexity theory. Thegeneral methodology was action based research and case studies.The developed model illustrates packaging systems and how they performin order to create conditions for better and more efficient packaginglogistics performance. The thesis explores and presents ways to improvethe opportunities that co-operate for better packaging, and integration ofvalue chains.Research in theoretical contribution is to demonstrate knowledge ofpackaging systems, understanding the interactive roles and existingrequirements in the Supply-Demand-Chain. Practical contributions werethe valuable empirical knowledge and increased understanding ofpackaging requirements and its interactions with agent to create conditionsfor effectiveness, efficiency and differentiation.

    The ability to understand packaging and how it contributes to the establishment of efficient logistics and the creation of individualised values for consumers is becoming increasingly important. This licentiate thesis stresses the importance of applying a holistic view of packaging in order to be able to understand how to adapt the distribution channel to meet consumer demands. The study focuses on the packaging, the suppliers of packaging and their current relations to the actors in the distribution channel, and how they can develop to play active roles in logistics. The objective of this work has been to explore the potentials for packaging suppliers to work as Network Integrators to increase efficiency and in at the same time contribute knowledge in logistics that will help to bridge gaps in packaging and logistics theory.The research has involved qualitative case studies of packaging and packaging suppliers. The field of logistics is developing rapidly. To examine this in depth, benchmarking studies were carried out, and the way in which this new knowledge can be applied in the packaging industry is discussed. The conclusion of this thesis is that there are gaps in the theory, and this work presents framework to strengthen the packaging and logistics theory. Further this work has identified the Network Integrator, an actor who can play a significant role to create efficiency in logistics.

    To be competitive in the corporate climate of today it is important to have effective logistic activities. A common resource within the internal logistics is forklift trucks, which are used to lift and transport material. It becomes more and more important to decide whether to buy, lease or rent the forklifts to obtain an optimal economic situation.

     

    Many companies have issues with internal pricing. It is difficult to price products and services correctly. It is common to price the overall instead of what it really costs.

    The purpose of the thesis is to present a model for the acquisition of forklifts for internal logistic operations, regarding financing and internal pricing, to obtain economic effectiveness and an optimal forklift fleet size.

     

    The study focused on a specific research question, and for this purpose interviews with experts were held, observations were made and a literature study was done. Primary and secondary data was then compiled in an analysis. Then a general model for decision-making, and an internal pricing model, was created. It was tested on a truck model at Sandvik Technology Material, and an evaluation was made.

     

    The final model contains eight aspects that are considered important when a company is making decisions regarding investments in forklifts. These aspects are; utilization rate, maintenance costs, operational costs, flexibility, customization, outsourcing, user environment and cost of capital and interest rates.  These aspects have been developed with discussions, observations and literature reviews and are considered to be the most important. After application at Sandvik Material Technology we considered it to be a useful tool for forklift investment decisions.

    Companies exist because there is a demand for their products and services. Companies need to logistically coordinate all their processes for them to grow and optimize their profits. Logistics is an area in constant development, where the old views become accepted and new ones become focus areas where the direction has gone from being cost-oriented to focusing on change processes, lead times and competitive means. This case study was performed towards a manufacturing company where the work was carried out with an affiliate company in Shanghai, China. The main company has its headquarter and production in Gävle, Sweden. The case study was limited towards the sales department and its impact on inventory control from a cost perspective. The study purpose was to examine how the sales processes affect the inventory control by going through the process from when the first contact being taken with the company to the final product arriving at customer. By mapping the entire process, one can find out the improvement areas and identify what causes long storage times for the company, how the company should work to minimize these times and how the company can work with processes for a more efficient operation. The problem of this study was that the chosen case company had a long storage time ranging from a few days to a few years, which caused high capital ties and costs for the warehouse operations. The empirical data was collected through interviews with employees who works closely with the processes that have been investigated in the study. The observation was conducted in Shanghai, China, where the case company has a warehouse. The observation and the interviews led to the results and empirical data describing how the company currently works with the sales processes and the basis for the problems that they are experiencing today. By comparing the theoretical theory and results, it turns out that the company’s view of how they work with the sales process is different from the reality. The study shows that deficiencies exist in the processes described by the interviews. One part of the problem was the lack of communication within the company. The departments focused on their own tasks and tried to perform good results without seeing the overall picture for the company. By improving the communication within the company, processes around improvements will be easier to implement. The result of the analysis in combination with literature theories led to that improvement measures could be distinguished. The company was recommended to review its processes, warehouses and packaging from a lean perspective in order to streamline and optimize its operations. This is done by constantly working on the communication and process work. For continued research, proposals are made for in-depth research within sales and its processes from a cost perspective. Sales are the part of companies that contribute to profitability, but it also needs to be studied about its impact on costs. The study's theoretical contribution suggests how a process that contributes with profitability also accounts for costs and how these can be improved through continuous process work.

    In today’s rapidly changing society company development and Continuous improvements are crucial to gain a competitive advantage on the global market. Through interviews this study investigated how two Chinese companies worked with Continuous improvements. The empirical findings were compared to the theoretical theories. The study showed that the biggest difference between western business and Chinese businesses was the organizational structure. The hierarchical organizational structure, since it hinders empowerment, was also the biggest barrier for Chinese companies to integrate further developmental work with Continuous improvements. Thus empowerment contributes to flexibility, innovation, employee development and increased communication processes.

    With the further promotion and application of e-commerce, logistics is becoming necessary. Logistics and the importance of e-commerce are more and more getting people’s attention, but what is the relationship between e-commerce and logistics still needs to be explored.

     

    The purposes of thesis are to research the relationship between e-commerce and logistics in B2C (business to consumer) companies. The aims of the thesis are threefold. Firstly, describe the coordination mechanism between e-commerce and logistics in general and particularly in Amazon.com. Secondly, find out the strengths and shortcoming of logistic when the company is developing e-commerce in general. Thirdly, In general, we focus on finding out the way to coordinate logistic in developing e-commerce, and how the logistic helps companies to develop e-commerce.

     

    The qualitative research method is used in our thesis in order to fulfill our purposes. It is a case study of Amazon China as the study subject. We analyzed the data, collected from the interview and documentation. There are certain limitations for our thesis: the interviewees were working, and they only had one hour for us to make the interview. Because of the time limitation, we could not get satisfactory and detailed information from them. So we collected some secondary data in order to support our thesis. In order to get much specific data i.e. more logistics information about logistics in Amazon, we phoned the customer service and in order to get some detail data.

     

    After the research, we found if e-commerce and logistics go hand in hand and converge; they create a unique mechanism which can help the business and market.

    Background: An organization's ability to control bound material can be the difference between success or failure. Organizations that effectively work with supply chain management has strengthened their positions and increase their competitive edge on the global market. Organizations is the pharmaceutical industry has a major social responsibility by ensuring a continuous flow of medicines as well as pharmaceutical equipment. The industry is controlled by the strict regulations. The stringent security requirements for delivery reliability and delivery precision combined with extensive production regulations have resulted in these organizations having difficulty in maintaining even inventory levels.

     

    Purpose: The study aims to investigating the correlation between high level of safety requirements in the pharmaceutical industry and high inventory levels with the help of a case study. The study wants to investigate consequences of such connection as well investigate potential solution in which organizations can reduce their inventory levels without jeopardizing the delivery precision and delivery safety of pharmaceutical organizations.

     

    A case study has been conducted at the pharmaceutical company Fresenius Kabi who is a global market leader in the production of intravenous nutritional solutions.

     

    Finding: Findings of the study indicates that safety requirements controlling the pharmaceutical industry have a major impact on the organization's production planning and storage. The consequences of the high security requirements results in in uneven production patterns and tied capital in high inventory levels. The consequences also indicated on a Bullwhip-effect. Lean management enables organizations in the pharmaceutical industry to establish even production patterns and reduce their inventory levels.

     

    The study presents a new factor that prevents organizations in the pharmaceutical industry to reduce the number of articles. The new factor has a strong link to why organizations in the pharmaceutical industry have high inventory levels.

    Purpose - The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to describe the relationship between Third-party logistics (3PL) suppliers and car assemblers under Just-in-sequence (JIS). The paper refers to a case in the Spanish automotive industry and the main target is to identify and analyse the potential problems between both parts and explain how they work together.

    Methodology – The paper is based on a case study research, with the aid of interviews with people of the industry and participant-observations, to explain how this part of the supply chain works, the relationships along the chain and the difficulties of sequencing.

    Results – The paper identifies and analyses the potential problems between both parts and relates how a mistake from one of them can affect the other one. Then, the results are discussed and associated with some concepts of the theoretical framework.

    Limitations - The results of this case study can only be related to the Spanish automotive industry, for car assemblers that work under a JIS context with several 3PL suppliers. The case study only identifies and analyses the problems, solutions and measures for managing them are not provided.

    ABSTRACT                                                                                                                    

    Energy use during production of new buildings is an aspect of the hot environmental issues, yet both regulations and studies are absent. In this study a comparison is made on energy use at Strand Etapp 2 which is located at Sjaaregatan 19 and Maskinisten, located at Maskinistgatan 19, both in the city of Gävle. The objective of this study has been to determine which of the projects has the lowest energy use as well as emissions of green house gases due to transportation at the time of erecting the buildings. Maskinisten and Gävle Strand Etapp 2 differ in mainly two points: Gävle Strand Etapp 2 is prefabricated and has wooden frames and Maskinisten is site built and has concrete frame. The method has been to assume a functional unit for the projects in order to make an assessment of which of the projects that have minimum of energy use and emissions. In the calculations, energy use has been divided into three parts: the energy use of the factory (only for the prefabricated project), during transportation and at the building site. The emissions are calculated based on the distance of transportation and the choice of truck when transporting materials and modules. When comparing the two projects a distinct difference can be seen. The prefabricated house, Gävle Strand Etapp 2 requires a lot more energy during production, about 160 % more, compared to site built the Maskinisten. Although the energy use in transport, which is a large part of the total energy of Gävle Strand Stage 2, is disregarded in the comparison, the project still has an energy usage that is about 25 % higher than the value for Maskinisten. The emission that occurs during transport by diesel trucks used in the projects has been calculated in g/ton for each type of trucks and distance. When compared to a previous study, it seems that the amount of emissions is mainly due of the transport distance and not on whether it is transported as complete modules or as separated building materials. To further identify the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of construction, several project managers from the two projects have been interviewed. The main advantage of prefabricated is considered the shortened construction period and a more efficient work - regardless of the season - on the other hand it is inflexible in comparison to the site-built. Looking only at energy use and emissions, which has been the main issue in this study; it is clear that Maskinisten is the project with the least environmental impact during the construction phase.

    For a very long time, Innovation has been viewed as technological phenomenon representing technological advancement in product or process features. A lot of research can be found in literature representing product innovation management supported by empirical studies, however, prospect of service innovation management has been largely ignored. Especially there is very limited research on service development process in third party logistics companies.

    This research aims to bring a holistic view of innovation management in third party logistics (3PL) companies so that a better understanding can be developed and it can be examined if existing innovation models are valid for 3PL companies.

    To achieve the objectives of this thesis, relevant literature has been reviewed extensively so that conductors of this research can get benefit of existing knowledge in the field and a duplication of research can be avoided. This research work is based on qualitative case study and Green Cargo Logistics AB (which is one of well established third part logistics (3PL) companies) was selected in order to find answers to research questions, which were resulted from the research gaps, found in existing literature. Findings from the case company are discussed in connection with theory and an analysis is made to reach on following conclusion.

    Conclusions: An innovative 3PL company has better ability to stay competitive and increase its market share through a better ability to serve it with new better services. Along with technological advancement, spotted opportunity for business growth, threat from competition and customer demand, environmental concerns have also been recognized as driving force for innovations in 3PL. This thesis also shows that a small independent unit (group of people) can play role of innovative organization to prosper creativity by improving interactions with external and internal linkages. This research illustrates that contrary to existing literature (which says there should be one single strategy for innovation management process), a flexible and adaptive strategy can be equally or more effective. For balancing risks and rewards while selecting development projects, consideration of return on investment (ROI) is found to be the most important decision criterion. For implementing the selected innovative idea, a small-scale test should be conducted in order to avoid risks associated with development projects.

    Urbaniseringen i världen ökar vilket leder till problem som har negativ påverkan på miljö och klimat i stadskärnor. Även inom Gävle kommun växer invånarantalet och antalet lastbilar i kommunen har ökat stadigt. I Europa framgår det att vägtransporter är det transportslag som växer mest. Dessa lastbilar står för en stor del utsläpp i förhållande till de gods som distribueras då fyllnadsgraden är låg. Genom en tydlig inriktning mot miljö kan företag skaffa sig konkurrensfördelar. Den ökade urbaniseringen har gjort att arbete med citylogistik blivit en viktig del av stadsplaneringen med syfte att förbättra städernas trafikmiljö. Rapporten bygger på ett uppdrag från Gävle kommun som handlar om att utforma en metod för implementering av citylogistik och metoden skall sedan värderas på kommunen.

    En teoretisk referensram har utformats med teorier kopplade till citylogistik. Nuläget för Gävle kommun angående citylogistik har fastställts genom intervjuer och rapportinsamling. Liknande metod har använts för datainsamling av erfarenheter från andra kommuner som arbetat med citylogistik.

    De kommuner som undersökts arbetar med externt upphandlade distributionscentraler för att hålla kostnaderna nere och vid upphandlingen av centralerna fokuserar kommunerna främst på hållbarhet ur ett miljömässigt perspektiv. I kommunerna framgår det att arbetet med citylogistik har lett till minskad inverkan på miljön. Det framgår även att vikten av ett fungerande e-handelssystem inom kommunerna är betydande, systemet underlättar beställningsprocessen och möjliggör för både tidsmässiga och ekonomiska besparingar.

    De slutsatser som dragits leder till en metod där viktiga faktorer för fungerande citylogistik presenteras. Metoden lyfter fram vikten att ha en tydlig vision och att utforma mål kopplat till arbetet för att skapa förutsättningar till uppföljning och utöver detta krävs även resurser. Dessa tre punkter vision, mål och resurser kan tillsammans med ett fungerande e-handelssystem och en distributionscentral skapa förutsättningar för ett fungerande arbete med citylogistik.

    Aim: The purpose of this study is to present and test an algorithm that gives acceptable solutions in the optimization of a dedicated production line consisting of several machines, with regards of inventory holding cost and available capacity. The aim is also to suggest possible improvements in the practical case that has been used to test the model, which have been made in cooperation with Sandvik Materials Technology and it’s product unit Rock Drill Steel, located in Sandviken, Sweden.

    Method: An algorithm has been elaborated from articles and science reports and has then been tested with data from the practical case. The result has then been evaluated through an analysis where the algorithm’s ability to acceptable solutions and show potential savings with regards to capital tied up in stock of finished products, safety stock and products in work in process.

    Results and conclusions: The study shows that the algorithm has the ability to create acceptable solutions when given a specific demand rate, cycle time and capacity. The study also shows potential savings when using a shorter production cycle, given that the unit works in a structured way in order to shorten the production cycle.

    Suggestions for future research: The algorithm tested in this study needs more evaluations regarding its limits and possible benefits through practical and theoretical case studies.

    Contributions: The algorithm the possibility to combine principles and models aimed at solving the ELSP (Economic Lot Schedule Problem) and the principles of Schedule Leveling, which is a common term in lean production to a model that optimize inventory holding costs.     The postal sector, the largest distribution network in the world, facing a decreasing letter volume due to both deregulation of the market and to substitution from electronic formats. One effect of the deregulation is that new operators are established and take market shares. The electronic media in form of e-mail and webpage’s, has taken a large part of the letter market. One way to meet this keener competition is to make distribution of mail more valuable and cost-effective for both the sender and the receiver by adding new options to the mail. In most countries there is only one operator who has the right to act as universal service provider in the meaning of UPU (Universal Post Union), called designated postal operator (DPO). Many of these DPO are developing a concept called Intelligent Mail to defense theirs market share.

     

    The purpose of this paper is to give a broad picture of intelligent mail as a concept and also to what extent this new concept will be able to use in international letter distribution within the postal sector.

     

    The data is mainly collected from different main operators through interviews and compared with written information.

     

    There are mainly to findings. The first is that the content and meaning of Intelligent Mail differ a lot from operator to operator. The second finding is that systems needed to support options in the concept are not universal within the postal sector and therefore very hard to use in an international context.

     

    The contribution of this paper is to give a deeper understanding of the Intelligent Mail concept and why this concept not is useful for international distribution within the postal industry today.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to give a successful example of how and why a change in warehouse design, where different picking methods are combined and supported by an intelligent warehouse management system to meet a very huge variation in volume with very short delivery time, have founded a major increasing in the market share from 22 to 50 %.

    This research was done as a longitudinal study from 1993 to 2010, where one company was followed on daily base 1993-2000 and for the last 10 years followed on yearly base.

    At the end of the study (2010) the company distributed over 13,000,000 items (books) covering 35,000 titles. The order size varies from 1 to over 5000. In addition, the company distributes over 2,600,000 items for book clubs and online shopping, as well as providing a wide range of additional services in the form of special packaging solutions, mechanical packing, mailing information, etc. The delivery time must be within 15 min in some cases but normally order taken before 17:00 are dispatched the next day. The must books are not wrapped.

    There are mainly to findings. The first finding is the importance to really understand the variation in volume over time and to design the warehouse and processes after this. Many similar companies have tried to meet the marked demand with warehouse automation, but this case show the importance to avoid automation to keep maximum flexibility to be able to meet extreme volume variation with very short delivery times.

    The second finding is that the intelligence in meaning of supporting IT-systems both must handling different market demands and support different order fulfillment processes. To meet the customer’s different requirements with short delivery times and huge variation in volume the successful order fulfillment process includes lot of different picking methods.

    A deep and long time study of a “best practice” case of a third party logistic providers that have designed the warehouse in order to meet an extremely volatile market.

    The paper explain how an unique combination of many different picking methods, flexible layout and an intelligent warehouse management system, have founded a major increase of the providers market share from 22 to 50 %.

     

    Many similar companies have tried to meet the marked demand with warehouse automation, this case show the importance to avoid automation to keep maximum flexibility to be able to meet extreme volume variation with very short delivery times. Instead investments are turned into intelligence of the IT-system which support different fulfillment processes.

    Globalization, an increasing amount of technology development and higher customer needs put new demands on companies warehousing function. As a result, there is a need for companies to work to further improve their current warehouse processes. The purpose of this paper is to create a model for efficient warehouse operations at a company operating within the textile industry in Jämtland that has stor-age function placed separately from the rest of the business. With the help of observations and interviews as well as a literature review, tools such as Plan-Do-Check Act (PDCA), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), and inventory placement aspects have been highlighted in the creation of a model. The model has also taken into account factors for efficient warehouse operations as well as barriers to implementation of changes. Factors such as management's commitment and motivation as well as obstacles in the form of a lack of a sense of coherence are highlighted. A model is presented that can be used by the company and other companies in similar situations.

    Bakgrund: Detta uppdrag initierades av Logistikavdelningen på ett av affärsområdena på fallföretaget som påvisar avsaknad av kontrollerade processer som resulterar i försvinnande av information och data mellan avdelningar. Initialt genomfördes en förstudie som påvisat vad företaget kallar en siloverksamhet, att företagets enheter inte är integrerade och mäts individuellt.  Slutsatsen drogs i förstudien att personliga relationer bör uppmuntras för att öka effektivitet och bör genomföras genom att integrera informationsdelning mellan avdelningar.

    Syfte: I detta arbete är syftet att ta reda på hur en stålindustri kan integrera informationsdelning mellan avdelningar i ett specifikt flöde för att skapa förståelse för helheten och skapa värde för en intern kund.

    Metod: Intervjuer, dokumentstudie och observationer är metoder som använts.

    Resultat: Metoden har påvisat att transparensen anses vara otillräcklig med anledning av bristande kundfokus. Alla respondenter anser att transparens är väsentlig information utan modifiering med syftet att möta kundbehov. Det har påvisat att det anses att ledningen ska se till att alla vet vad som sker i kedjan och vilken informations som behövs och att informationskvaliteten måste säkerställas. Ur relationssynpunkt finns ingen helhetssyn och ingen anställd vet vilket värde hon/han själv eller andra skapar till kunden. Respondenter önskar mer schemalagda möten för att ta vara på relationer inom organisationen. Det finns många system och de är inte integrerade och pratar inte med varandra. Samtliga respondenter anser att mätetalen är felaktiga och att prestationen på försörjningskedjan ska ligga till grund för mätetalen istället för per produktionsenhet. Drömscenarion för respondenter är att ha en funktion som kan kontrollera alla aktiviteter och processen samt ett gemensamt system.

    Slutsats: Företaget kan integrera informationsdelning genom att dela ansvar, möten och mäta försörjningskedjan som en helhet för att skapa förståelsen för vilket värde den anställde genererar. Detta underlättar arbetet för produktionsenheterna och eliminerar den gråzon som finns idag för att skapa värde för den interna kunden.

    The union of digital technologies and logistical functions through concepts such as Industry 4.0 could change how a lot of markets operate. This creates new requirements for manufacturing companies who wish to keep growing and to stay competitive. The purpose of this study was to look at implementation of modern digital technologies in an industrial manufacturing context. The authors of this study explored which motives exist for such an implementation and which problems that need to be considered. Furthermore, the authors examined how effectiveness can be measured after implementation from both a manufacturing perspective as well an internal transport perspective. Interviews were conducted with a manufacturing company in the process of implementing a digital warehouse management system as well as a consulting company that provided support to the project.

    The case company in the study was in the final phase of implementing a digital warehouse management system with a primary feature of tracking material and goods through the production. Prior to this warehouse management system, all planning and stock keeping were performed manually.

    The authors proposed 14 different motives for manufacturing companies to implement a digital system and eight important factors to be considered when implementing a system such as the one the case company did. The authors also proposed Key Performance Indicators for measuring effectiveness and efficiency of manufacturing operations and forklift drivers, respectively, when a digital system is applied.

    Background: Facility location is for most organizations a strategic decision and traditionally, these decisions have been based on cost-oriented models. These models can be described as mathematical or evaluative factor. Historically, these models are used to determine the appropriate economic placements but other benefits such as environmental and social benefits can increase an organization's competitive advantage when interest in sustainable development has increased. In the current situation, there are no models that take into account sustainable development in facility location. It is clear that knowledge of sustainable development in logistics business location is flawed and that there is a need to introduce sustainable aspects when making decisions related to localization problems.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the most important sustainable factors in logistics business location and to rank them with a model based on the three dimensions of sustainable development; economic, social and environmental.

    Method: A literature review was conducted based on scientific articles, books and documents related to the topics that have been considered for this study. To complement the theory a case study was implemented based on interviews with organizations that work with regional development as well as an author of a localization model with sustainable aspects.

    Results: The respondents view on sustainability and sustainability in logistics were collected in this section.

    Analysis and Discussion: It was revealed that the respondents had slightly different perspectives on sustainability but they still came to the same conclusion. All respondents talked about sustainable transports, availability of labor workers and also availability of skilled personnel as important aspects of sustainable establishments. To motivate sustainable logistics localizations it came clear that access to these factors is important. When the analysis was compiled, it was found that six factors emerged in the interview responses, as well as in theory. These were sustainable infrastructure, life-cycle perspective, influences on the surroundings, logistics parks, labor and diversity.

    Conclusion: The six criteria that were developed were ranked using an AHP decision model, and it turned out that sustainable infrastructure is the most important factor for sustainable development in logistics localizations. Then came the life-cycle perspective, logistics parks, labor, influences on the surroundings and ultimately diversity. Lessons learned by this study are that the sustainability in localization is still inadequate and that the localization should be based on partnerships and workforce development to a greater degree. By proposing important factors a framework is developed to work by when it comes to sustainable logistics localizations.

    With the development of society, organizations are increasingly working to streamline their businesses to maintain and strengthen their position on the market. This can be carried out in several different ways, since businesses are individual and require special needs to develop longterm sustainability. The purpose of this case study is to emphasize how material flows within industrial goods reception can be streamlined based on human aspects. To answer the purpose, data was collected through interviews, observations and literature studies. Six interviews have been conducted at BillerudKorsnäs, with observations taking place continuously during the study. This is to create a reality perception with different approaches to increase the credibility of the study. The results were analyzed and discussed with the help of literature reviews. The literature studies consist of collected scientific articles, course literature, web pages and other credible sources. The results are based on a study of internal material flow in the central repository at BillerudKorsnäs in Gävle. As discovered, the material flow consists of mainly manual labor that lead to unnecessary time-consuming disturbances. A contributing factor to improve and streamline the material flow has been built on identifying health-promoting measures. Therefore, industrial goods reception can be made more efficient with the help of digital aids concerning to human aspects.

    Abstract [en]

    Truck transports represent majority of all transports within the municipal sector in Sweden. Most of these transports are directly from the suppliers to the customers. This results in a large number of vehicles within the city center and increase amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. This thesis, therefore, aims to investigate how a municipality with about 70 000 inhabitants can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions from their transports, and still maintain profitability by using city logistics. The thesis discusses the concept city logistics and how the method is used within the transport sector. Furthermore, it illustrates pollution from different fuel options and the socioeconomic hindrances that exist within the transport operations regarding environmental issues.

    Case study is used as a method, based on interviews with concerned parties, which hold positions within the organizations where they work with, or plan regarding city logistics from the municipalities of Sandviken and Gävle. Furthermore, analysis has been done on organizational documents with three municipalities that have performed similar ventures.

    The results show that all municipalities that have implemented city logistics have experienced decrease in carbon dioxide emissions on different levels. They also observed benefits regarding the choice of HVO100 as fuel for the logistics within the cities.

    The conclusion shows that city logistics can be used effectively in municipality operations to both lower their carbon dioxide pollution, as well as improve work safety, economy, operational planning, environmental requirements on their suppliers and increased work environment.

    Abstract [en]

    This Master’s thesis concentrates on the investigation of the automotive third party logistics (3PL) industry in China. Therefore the overall aim of this thesis is the investigation of the Chinese 3PL environment with the focus on automotive industry. In order to clarify this aim, following four research objectives are set:

    1)      Identify barriers and conditions of the 3PL market, taking automotive market as an example market for 3PL services.

    2)      Identify market specific logistics services and compare different logistics services providers in this environment.

    3)      Assess the Chinese industrial structures and their impact on foreign enterprises and create an actual picture of the automotive industry.

    4)      Detect industrial structures’ influences on logistics services competition.

    Such a research is important as existing research focused on these objectives is extremely rare or not present. The research objectives are solved by a multi-method approach. In wide areas this thesis is a descriptive study. Thus barriers and conditions of the 3PL market, taking automotive market as an example market for 3PL services, are identified in an extensive literature review and combined with findings from interviews. These interviews are performed in a case company which is active in the Chinese automotive 3PL market. Many important characteristics and circumstances which can mainly be seen as barriers for logistics business are identified in the areas of Infrastructure and equipment, Supply and demand of logistics services, Importance of relationships, Legal issues and Staff requirements. Market specific logistics services are also identified in a literature review. In a next step these services are used to compare seven relevant 3PL providers in the industry by doing a questionnaire survey. The research shows that services mentioned in literature present in the industry. No significant differences between different competitors can be found. Thus none of these companies shows a competitive advantage due to their service portfolios.

    Industrial structures for both industries automotive manufacturing and automotive 3PL are assessed by combining findings from literature and from empirical internet research. Thus industrial structures in China are ruins of earlier years in China’s history. State-owned enterprises play an important role in China’s automotive manufacturing industry. These companies are involved in the overwhelming share of the passenger car production. An interesting finding is that most passenger cars arise from joint ventures between these Chinese car groups and foreign car manufacturers. The Chinese car groups and the joint ventures create a network like structure in the industry. 3PL providers appear differently. Major companies identified are wholly-owned foreign companies, joint-ventures between Chinese car groups and foreign logistics providers or subsidiaries of car groups. Affiliations between logistics joint ventures and Chinese car groups indicate that competition might not be unrestrictedly present in the market.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction –ISO 14001 is one of the environmental management systems (EMS) that are used in industries in order to deal with environmental issues. Many researchers point out that the adoption of ISO 14001 could help firms improve operational procedures and gain competitive advantages, increase their environmental performance, adopt management strategies in terms of energy consumption, materials and waste, cost efficiency and company reputation. Previous studies have focused on the connection between ISO 14001 and technology innovation. However, there are still some gaps in the literature between the effect of ISO 14001 and other types of innovation (product, production, position), especially in small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

    Purpose – This paper studied the implementation of ISO 14001 in SMEs associated with the improvement and performance of different dimensions of innovation (product/process/position).

    Design/Methodology – This study had a phenomenological approach. A case study was used for examining the innovation actions and activities that were developed by the help of ISO 14001. Documents were used to collect secondary data, especially in firm performance in order to show the innovation performance before and after implementation of ISO 14001. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect primary data from four employees among top management as well as staff who are related to ISO 14001 and each type of innovation in aluminium industry – FEAL AB in this case –  in Horndal, Sweden. Each interview session took around 20 minutes.

    Findings – The finding shows that the adoption of ISO 14001 led to incremental changes in product and process innovation. ISO 14001 led the company to innovate their products by using new chemical materials that are environmentally friendly, and ISO 14001 requirements were used when specifying requirements for new products. It also led the firm to develop a procurement process, waste management, and organization strategies. Yet, there was no positive impact of the implementation of ISO 14001 on position innovation. In terms of performance, ISO 14001 led to improved performance in product and process innovation. It led the firm to have better methodology, cost efficiency and waste reduction. It also changed behaviour and mind-set of employees and the process for developing new products.

    Research limitations and further study – Only one case – a 25-year-old SME in the aluminium industry in Sweden - was used in this research. It can be broadened to either comparative case studies or quantitative studies in order to compare the influences of ISO 14001 on innovation and performance among them.

    Practical implication –This study could provide a guideline for building innovation in SME firms with the help of ISO 14001 in order to create competitive advantages in highly competitive markets. It could improve innovation activities in order to have positive effect on a firm’s products and performance in a sustainable way. Moreover, firms could use innovation improvements and performance that are developed with the help of ISO 14001 as a manner for promoting company reputation.

    Theoretical contribution – This paper shows that SMEs which certified according to ISO 14001 tend to rapidly improve their innovations particularly in process and organization innovation. All in all, the perception of ISO 14001 is opposed by this study. The ISO 14001 is about not only environment but innovation as well.

    It has always been a great importance for organizations to have an efficient material flow process. This is accomplished by focusing on the internal material control, which can lead to increased efficiency and profitability. An inventory has a specific handling time and this also affects the order process time in the material flow. Two factors that impact on order process efficiency are: the structure and design of the warehouse and how high the demand on the products is.

     

    We got the opportunity to execute this study on a whole sales company called Östgöta Papper. The company is located in Linköping since it was established in 1941. Currently, there are possibilities for improving the structure of the order picking operation at Östgöta Papper. Structure of the articles storage location in the warehouse can be improved, which will result in improved inventory management and handling capacity. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to investigate how the existing inventory can be made more effective on the basis of scientific methods of inventory management and order picking. We will also point out how a time- and cost model can be used as a base for savings. Our study is built up on the basis of a case study. This included data collection, interviews, observations and questionnaire. Supporting documents to the collected information includes also literature review, search in textbooks and scientific papers.

     

    Based on the theoretical framework and observations, a number of areas of improvement were identified. The problem areas that were identified are: employees do not know where all the articles are placed in the warehouse, the warehouse is unstructured and the company must update the inventory and discard old articles, the company must have a set standard of routines in orders for employees to be efficient in order picking and closing of orders.

     

    The conclusion of the study is that the company has to focus on the structure of the warehouse, update the inventory and discard old articles, organize the placement of the articles in the warehouse through an ABC-classification so the company can focus on the most important articles. There can be a bigger advantage for the warehouse department to establish goals and remain compliance of our recommendations and do regularly routine follow-ups.

    Inledning: Marknadstillväxten har gått framåt senaste åren och företag bör hitta konkurrensfördelar för att fortsätta vara lönsamma. Priser bör anpassas efter marknaden och vetskap om tillverkningskostnad blir viktigt för tillverkande företag. För att beräkna tillverkningskostnad för produkter kan självkostnadskalkylering och totalkostnadsmodellen användas. Ett materialflöde i en produktion består av processer som innefattar hantering, förflyttning och lagring av material. Studien har inte funnit någon tidigare forskning eller modell som förklarar relationen mellan materialflöden och tillverkningskostnad på en detaljerad nivå vilket motiverar studien.

    Syfte: Syftet med arbetet var att utforma och utvärdera en modell för bestämning av tillverkningskostnad med utgångspunkt från materialflöden i produktion med avseende på lagring, transport och tillverkningsoperationer. Metoder: En abduktiv ansats har använts för att besvara syftet och frågeställningar där teori och empiri har inhämtats parallellt under arbetets gång. I studien har teori och empiri lagt grund för kostnadsfaktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden.

    Utformning av modell för bestämning av tillverkningskostnad: I studien har teoretiska och empiriska undersökningar utförts för att redogöra för olika kostnadsfaktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden. Modellen använder tre aktiviteter för att kategorisera identifierade kostnadsfaktorer i ett materialflöde: operation, lagring och transport.

    Tillämpning och utvärdering av modell: Modellen tillämpades på fallföretaget Alderholmens mekaniska. Efter tillämpningen utvärderades modellen där styrkor och utvecklingsmöjligheter presenterades. Slutsats: Studiens bidrag är en modell för beräkning av tillverkningskostnad med utgångspunkt från materialflödet i produktionen. Modellen presenterar vilka faktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden. Kapitlet avslutas med rekommendationer till framtida studier för att utöka kunskapen inom ämnet.

    Abstract [en]

    The concept of logistics is to handle all the activities within a company in the most efficient way. Logistics is mostly associated with the flow of materials within the company, but it is important to remember that logistic also includes the administrative and information flow. A good information flow, both with external and internal partners will lead to good cooperation between the different partners. Good cooperation will lead to more efficient processes, which in turn will give a higher customer value.

    The purpose of this paper was to develop a methodology to analyse and improve the efficiency in a material and information flow between different units. Based on the purposed pertinent theories that have been found; for example, theories about Lean production, supply chain management, information systems and the importance of good communication skills within an organization. The theory that was found is secondary data, which has been thoroughly examined before it has been used. A methodology was designed based on the factors that were considered relevant to create good material and information flows. The designed methodology was tested in Sandvik SMT. As a major part of the methodology included an identification of the current status of the case company, interviews and observations have been conducted.

    The methodology helped to create a structured approach, which has resulted in a number of identified problems. The problems that have been identified includes among others, insufficient communication and information flows within the organisation and a limited cooperation between the various units in the supply chain. Based on the found theory and the study conducted at Sandvik SMT, we concluded that effective material and information flow are created by including well-designed IT systems and good cooperation skills in supply chains.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with this study is to create knowledge about the logistic activities within a company with varying demand. To present a work model and give suggestions for improvements that could lead to more effective supply chains in order to lighten or eliminate the problems that the company experience in the area of lead times, supplier relations and service levels versus capital bindings.   With support from the reviewed literature has an working model been constructed for the company. Primary data for the mapping and analysis of the present flows have been collected through observations and interviews with staff at the service depot in Gavle.   The status report identified problem areas. These areas are about varying lead times, low visibility, inadequate communication and long transport distances. We also find out that the capital binding currently is too low to hold the promised level of service to customers.   Through methods and tools within the working model could the main cause to the highlighted problems be identified and suggestions for improvement presented. The first suggestions for improvement is about develop the existing supplier relations to achieve improved visibility and shorter lead times in the supply chain for accumulated articles. If the first suggestion isn´t feasible, is the second suggestion that the company should aim to expand their supplier selection and by that ensure that they achieve the promised level of service. The third and last suggestion is that the company should try to improve their internal inventory control and through that achieve less dependence on the reliability of the suppliers.  The result of the thesis demonstrates how the relations in a supply chain affect the inventory control for the individual company. The thesis proves the previous research about the connection between service level and capital binding. These two need to be decided and formed with the relations of the existing supply chains in mind.

    According to Carlsson & Rönnqvist (2005) and Frayret et al. (2007) supply chain management in the wood products industry is getting more important. One of the challenges is to find a way to deal with customer’s fluctuating demand. Traditional solution to handle fluctuating demand is large inventory (Lee et al., 1997b; So & Zheng, 2003), which causes often high inventory cost for effective supply chain management.

     

    The aim of the study is to investigate factors that affect a fluctuating demand in the wood products industry and suggest how to reduce the fluctuating demand through related factors analysis in order to improve Demand-Supply chain management efficiency. For this pursose, a case study on a planing is conducted. To collect data, interviews with employees from different departments have been made along with literature studies. The study presents that there are many challenges for the fluctuation demand such as lack of forecasts and lack of communication with customers. This, in turn, will cause problems with planning of the raw material as well as difficulties to deliver the goods on time.

     

    The conclusion shows that the factors affecting a fluctuating demand are price variations, the orders batch size and order frequency. Price variations can be improved by ABC classification of the products by product demand. Forecasts will make the estimation of demand easier, although, in order to use forecasts properly a joint vision, close relationships and good communication with customer and supplier is required. Problems regarding batch size and order frequency can be reduced if the customer is allowed to decide the batch size with no specific requirements. The study also shows that factors such as weather, trends, fashion, holidays and disappearance of ROT work affects the fluctuating demand.

    Abstract [en]

    As Chinese economy develops, service innovation has become a key element for which Chinese enterprises compete and upgrading of service industry all over China due to its influence on national economic competitiveness, among which the innovation of multi-agent service plays an important role in enterprises. This thesis mainly studies the concept of the Multi-agent Participate Model of Service Innovation and explores the strategic role and position of the model in communication industry. The purpose of this thesis includes two parts: firstly it studies the service innovation which multi-agent such as enterprises, customers and suppliers participate in so as to establish a new theoretical framework of such service innovation. Secondly, from the perspective of strategic management of enterprises, it considers the selection of Multi-agent Participate Model of Service Innovation in competitive strategies of the communication industry to clarify the strategic role and position of such model in management of the communication industry.

    Questionnaire and interview are two main data acquisition methods in this thesis. The author surveyed 100 employees from China Telecom with a questionnaire designed by herself. The data shows that customers’ demands for market and competitors’ competition in the market have a great influence on the innovation activities of enterprises. Some senior managers of China Telecom have been interviewed for this study. The interviews have shown the significance of Multi-agent Participate Model of Service Innovation in telecommunication industry and the Multi-agent Participate Model of Service Innovation can favorably be applied to telecommunication industry. The enterprises, customers, employees, managers and suppliers are of inseparable relationships in the model. As an innovation model of enterprises, Multi-agent Participate Model of Service Innovation can better mobilize enthusiasm of each participant of service innovation, and innovativeness of management service to clarify the strategic position of the model in enterprise management.

    Modern supply chain management has been widely used in manufacture and retail business. Many companies have realized SCM plays a pivotal role to success and gives company competitive advantage. Chinese firms have learned knowledge of SCM from foreign firms. But the achievements are not outstanding; one of the barriers is traditional Chinese distribution network. Therefore Chinese companies face challenges when they apply supply chain management in China. Meanwhile, innovation and SCM implementing would take opportunities to Chinese firms. This thesis focuses on one participant in supply chain, which is called exclusive distributor. The main purpose of this thesis is to find out how traditional Chinese distributors meet challenges by new competitors and new situations. Case study is the main research approach. The objective of research is one Chinese local exclusive distribution company, named Jia Heng. The data collect from article review and e-mail interview, which provide theoretical and empirical finding.

    Information and knowledge of SCM is not completely known well by small local Chinese companies. And the traditional logistics system and mind influence its performances. Inventory level control is one of the problems that exist in those companies. Cost deceasing and value adding can be achieved via effective SCM. Differences between different roles in the supply chain has been detected and significant factors and shown in a radar map. Established physical distribution agents trend to remove, because it is a beneficial way to decrease costs for the buyers and sellers. Disintermediation is a threat for Chinese exclusive distributor. In order to survive in the competition, Chinese exclusive distributor should launch a revolution for its business. SCM is an optimal strategy for them. EOQ is an effective model to the solve inventory level control problem. The suggestion of company is “know SCM, do SCM and popularize SCM” process step by step, and it can help company to gain competitive advantages. The radar map can remain each role to review its company, and improve its performance by the different factors.
