Förändrade intimitetsformer bland äldre i det senmoderna samhället [Changing forms of intimacy among older people in late modern society]2015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 52, no 1, p. 5-31Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a neglected reality in Swedish social research: New romantic relationships in later life. Our theoretical points of departure are the transformation of intimacy and the transition from a culture of marriage to a culture of divorce. We ask if the transformation of intimacy has reached later life and investigate late life divorce, attitudes to and choice of union form in late life heterosexual relationships, relationship history and the importance of a relationship for life satisfaction. The results, which are based both on demographic data and a survey to 60-90 year old Swedes (n=1225), show that changing relationship patterns in late modern Sweden have reached older people. In romantic relationships initiated in later life LAT is the preferred union form, followed by cohabitation, while marriage is a rare choice. In some respects this makes older people an avant-garde in the investigation of alternative union forms. The results also show the importance of romantic relationships for life satisfaction in later life independent of union form. Finally we criticize Swedish census data, which is based on civil status, for giving a somewhat distorted image of older people's family and romantic lives.

Gendered Ideals vs. Realities for Partner-Age Unions in Later Life2015In: Aging Families/Changing Families, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on actual and ideal partner-age among older Swedes, from a gender perspective on age-homo/heterogamy. The paper is based on a survey to 60–90 year old Swedes, currently either singles or in a cross-gender relationship (married, cohabiting, LAT) (n=1225; response rate 42%). All analyses were made also separately for men and women. Results: Unions tend to follow a traditionally gendered age structure: 56% of men but only 16% of women have a younger partner. This age-pattern is more pronounced for those: in first unions (p<.001); in unions initiated before the 1970s (p<.01). There was no significant variation with union form or urbanity (modernity), and not with either education or income (power resources). Ideal partner-age correlates strongly (p<.001; R2=0,76) with actual partner-age for respondents in unions (ideal only slightly younger). Single men and women are freer to envision a younger partner: almost all (92%) single men and half of the single women (47%) prefer a younger partner (8,9 years younger on average for men; 2,2 for women). The proportion preferring a younger partner increases by age, leading to increasingly incompatible age ideals. The results will be discussed in relation to life-course theory; gender and power; the deinstitutionalization hypothesis.

New intimate relationships as a resource for independent living in later life2014In: The Gerontologist, ISSN 0016-9013, E-ISSN 1758-5341, Vol. 54, no Suppl. 2, p. 11-11Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Despite increased research interest in transitions into new intimate relationships in later life, little focus has been on how transitions affect older people’s social networks. We investigate the impact of entering into new intimate relationships in later life on interdependent lives. Results are based on both qualitative interviews with 28 Swedes (63–91 years) either dating or living in new relationships initiated 60+ (marriage, cohabitation, LAT), and a quantitative survey to 60–90 year old Swedes (n=1225; response rate 42%). A central theoretical frame is Elder’s (1994) principle of interdependent lives. A new relationship usually meant integration into the new partner’s social and filial networks (some problems will be discussed) and a restructuring of the relationship chain so that time and energy is redirected to the new partner. A new partner was described as a resource for living independent lives by the older informants, and as a way of “unburdening” the children. Finally, the qualitative interviews hinted at a hierarchy of dependencies. This was confirmed by the survey. A majority of respondents would primarily turn to their partners for social, emotional and practical support, with children as a distant second and “others” third. An exception was personal hygiene, where partners remained the first choice, but where the social services were preferred to children. This hierarchy was the same in new relationships. The results, partly contradicting previous research findings, are discussed in light of Western individualism generally and Swedish welfare-state and state supported individualism in particular.

    Abstract [en]

Lots of prior social gerontological research has focused on filial rela-tions in informal care as well as the impact of widowhood on social relation-ships in later life. In this paper we instead ask how a new intimate relation-ship in later life effect relationships with children, relatives and friends. In particular we focus on the effects that a new intimate partner in later life has on filial, social and care obligations. To answer these questions, qualitative interviews were conducted with a strategical sample of 28 Swedes, 63–91 years, who had established a new intimate relationship after the age of 60 (or who are dating). We found that the respondents describe changes over their life-time in what we conceptualize as the ‘relationship chain’ – a hierarchy in social and care responsibilities – where the new partner in established relations steps in at the very front of the chain. This is positively perceived by the informants, who recurrently describe their partners as a resource for their own autonomy as well as that of their children, relatives and friends.

New intimate relationships in later life: consequences for the social and filial network?2017In: Journal of family issues, ISSN 0192-513X, E-ISSN 1552-5481, Vol. 38, no 3, p. 381-405Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the consequences for linked lives of entering into new intimate relationships in later life. The empirical data is based on qualitative interviews with 28 Swedes aged 63 to 91 years, who have established a new intimate relationship after the age of 60 years or are currently dating. Theories on linked lives and individualization are used. The results show that children were generally supportive of their older parents’ unions and older individuals were often integrated into the new partner’s network. However, a new union also restructured the relationship chain so that time and energy were redirected to the new partner. Older parents preferred to be dependent on partners rather than children/others. A new partner was described as a source for autonomy and a way of “unburdening” children. Results are discussed in light of Western individualism generally and Swedish state supported individualism in particular.

Time as a structuring condition behind new intimate relationships in later life2013In: 2nd Forum of Sociology, Social Justice and Democratization, 1-4 August 2012, Buenos Aires, Argentina: Book of Abstracts, 2013, p. 65-65Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mobility in and out of intimate relationships has become more common in late modern societies also in later life. However, it has been a neglected issue in social gerontology and sociological studies on ageing. In this paper the research questions are: What characterizes the formation of new intimate relationships in later life? Are there any specific, more or less universal, conditions that separate them from relationships in earlier life phases? Qualitative interviews was used with a strategical sampel, consisting of 28 Swedes, 63–91 years, who have established a new intimate heterosexual relationship after the age of 60 or who are dating. The results showed Time constituting a central structuring condition for new intimate relsionships in later life. In the results three aspects of time – Available free time, Lived time and Remaining time – which all have a constituting and an important formative power on new late in life relationships are discussed in relation to theories of late modernity and the Third Age and in relation to changing demographical conditions.

    Abstract [en]

Although mobility in and out of intimate relationships has become more common in later life, it has been a neglected issue in social gerontology. In this article, we ask what characterises the formation of new intimate relationships in later life, and whether there are any specific conditions that separate these from relationships in earlier stages of the lifecourse. On the basis of qualitative interviews with 28 persons aged 63-91 who have established a new intimate heterosexual relationship after the age of 60 or who are dating singles, we argue that time constitutes such a central structuring condition. We discuss and theorise two aspects of time - post-(re)productive free time and remaining time - which have an important formative power on new late-in-life relationships. We argue that together these aspects form a central existential structure of ageing in many Western societies - the paradoxical condition of having lots of available free time but little time left in life - which, besides influencing new late-in-life relationships, might also be relevant to other aspects of and choices in later life.

Union Form in Late Life Intimate Relationships: A Question of Age, Period or Cohort?2015In: Aging Families/Changing Families, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Family theory has suggested a radical transformation of intimacy in large parts of the Western world over the last 50 years. Given this development, how can we best explain union form in older people’s relationships: In terms of the traditional values they were brought up with (cohort)? In terms of the historical context in which the relationships were initiated (period)? Or in terms of the life-phase in which the relationships were initiated (age)? All of these hypothesis have been suggested by prior research. In this paper we discuss these respective arguments, basing ourselves on results from a quantitative survey of 60–90 year old Swedes (response rate 42%), focusing a subset of respondents (n=702) who are currently either married, cohabiting or LAT. A logistic regression showed no significant support for the cohort hypothesis. It gives strong support for the historical hypothesis – union form is significantly explained by the year the relationship was initiated. It also gives significant support to the life phase hypothesis – older people tend to prefer LAT relationships – but only after the historical normative context allow it. The results are discussed in relation to explanations suggested by earlier research regarding union form in older couples.

Medias bild av socialtjänsten: En kritisk diskursanalys av tidningsartiklar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the discourses that can be identified in medias representation of social services. To answer the purpose we made a critical discourse analysis using Faircloughs three-dimensional model. The choice to focus our study on a local newspaper was based on earlier research that found it possible that a local paper has a greater impact on readers than a national newspaper. Readers can more easily connect with what's happening in the immediate environment than what is written nationally. We used articles published in 2013 containing “social services”. We found four discourses about collaboration, economy, criticism and work practices and procedures. We found social services mentioned in contexts involving money, resources, complaints, cooperation, collaboration, support, routines and responsibilities. The social services was briefly depicted, descriptions of their work was often omitted. The descriptions we found was often negative and contained assumptions that were not explained.

”Barn hör hemma med sina föräldrar”: Professionellas upplevelser av familjehemsplacerade barns kontakt och återförening med den biologiska familjen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study provides an understanding of how professionals describe their experience of foster children’s contact and reunification with the biological parents from an attachment theory perspective. The study was conducted by five qualitative interviews with social workers. The result show that social workers believed that it is important for children to have contact with their biological parents, which can enable an eventual reunification and give the child understanding about his/her background and placement. The results show that contact on the other hand can be negative due to loyalty conflicts and uncertainty. All the social workers said that reunifications rarely take place. The parents' problems are often complex which can make it difficult to improve parental abilities. Children who stay in their foster families during a long period of time can develop an attachment, which means that a separation from the foster home might be harmful.

    Abstract [en]

Today social media is a natural part of many children's everyday life and research has shown a vigorous increase of the usage. At the same time research has shown that mental illness among children has become more frequent and every tenth child suffers from a mental illness. Due to this, the aim of this study was to look into how professionals within child psychiatry experience the usage of social media when they encounter children. Four interviews with curators within child psychiatry was conducted. The results showed that curator’s experiences of social media are that they have an impact on children's mental health and that there is a lack of knowledge about social media in child psychiatry. There is also a lack of methods to map and manage the usage of social media among children.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe how the Swedish police puts the problem- oriented approach to practice on a local level. Twelve semistructured interviewes was conducted in two separate cities and the results showed a lack of guidelines in formulating the problems which the police was meant to solve. Furthermore the results indicated a wide range of sources of information as well as a variety of problemsolving methods. The methods was carried out with or without help from other agencies. Finally the study showed that the police do evaluate their work, although many police officers expressed a need for guidance in the process.

Title: The future starts in school – Principals’ experience of managing school social work in elementary schools. The aim of this essay was to examine how five principals described their experiences of managing the school social work in elementary schools. This is important to study since student educational and social failure in school has increased. Using qualitative interviews with principals from both municipal and privately owned schools we examined how the principals’ experiences influenced the school social work. The study included how the principals described their complex professional role and if the principals had experienced any changes in the school social work over time. In the literature on which this essay was based on, school social work was described as complex and time consuming. The essay’s conclusion is that school social work today includes a lot of social work, which takes time and financial resources from the educational process. We question if this can be a contributing reason to the decrease in knowledge results among Swedish students.

Vilket stöd erbjuder samhället föräldrar till adoptivbarn med funktionsnedsättning?2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate clients' perceptions of collaboration within the social service and between social services and other actors in human service organizations. A qualitative method was used and six semi-structured interviews were conducted with clients whose children were involved with social services. The results highlight that clients pay attention to other factors in the collaborative processes than professionals do. The interviewed clients expressed that collaboration is needed, but becomes difficult and time consuming the more actors involved. They described themselves as having a strong driving force and being help-seeking, as well as having many important roles in the collaborative processes that are often overlooked by both themselves and professionals. The results show that the relationship between social workers and clients play an important role where the social worker can relieve the client by acting as a disseminator of information.

Berättelser om vägen mot ohälsa: - en narrativ studie bland socionomer inom socialtjänsten.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Titel: Ur elden in i askan.

Keywords: unaccompanied refugee children, social network, risk and resilience, social work.

Authors: Karin Bodå och Leila Silva

The main purpose of this study is to illuminate and describe the importance of having a social network for unaccompanied refugee children in Sweden. Using qualitative interviews this study looks at their possibilities to create a social network in Sweden and how their network helps them to solve problems. Knowledge of this subject is important for social workers, in order to be able to encourage and help unaccompanied refugee children to build a social network. The base for our analysis is attachment theory, coping theory, social network theory, KASAM theory, risk and resilience theory, system theory are used to give deeper insight into experiences of four unaccompanied refugee boys. Important results found that their social networks affected their possibilities to handle problems. They felt that being surrounded by people who supported them made them feel less lonely. Further results showed that they felt limited in creating a social network during their first time in Sweden, mainly because of language difficulties, culture differences and the feeling of not being accepted. Finally we found out that some had negative experiences of social workers. Social worker’s approach affected their wellbeing.

What Places Adolescents and Adults, Respectively, in Need of Social Assistance?

A Qualitative Study of How Social Workers Whom Administrate Financial Assistance for Adolescents and Adults, Respectively, Describe Reasons Behind the Need of Social Assistance Amongst Their Clients

The purpose of this essay was to study and compare how social workers whom administrate social assistance for adolescents and adults, respectively, describe reasons behind the need of social assistance amongst their clients. This was done due to the use of qualitative interviews with a total of six social workers. Of these six, three administrated social assistance for adolescents while the other three did the same for adults. Prior research of poverty attribution greatly inspired this essay. This research shows that public explanations for poverty vary from individualistic to structuralistic/social and fatalistic attributions. Research also argues that explanations amongst social workers, specifically, may constitute further attributions which are unique to that group and that can appear alongside the aforementioned attributions. The results of this essay showed that both groups of administrators explained the need of social assistance in similar ways. Although many of the mentioned reasons were similar, making up several of the aforementioned attributions, some of them varied between the groups. Furthermore, a new set of attributions emerged from one group of administrators.

Can people with disabilities gain from education?: Similarities and differences between occupational attainment among persons with and without disabilities2014In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 49, no 2, p. 193-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: More knowledge is needed ofoccupational attainment of persons with disabilities, i.e. the relationship between their educational level and their profession, and factors of importance for this relationship.

Objective: To compare occupational attainment among persons with and without a disability.

Method: 3 396 informants with disabilities and 19 004 non-disabled informants participated (control group) in a survey study by Statistics Sweden. The informants with disabilities were divided into six groups.

Results: Occupational attainment did not differ between the disability groups, neither between persons with and without a disability. Follow-up analysis showed that men with disabilities with primary or secondary school had an occupation above their educational level to a significantlylarger extent than women with disabilities. This pattern was even clearer in comparison with the control group. Persons without disabilities, with secondary or higher education, were more successful in the labor market than persons with disabilities. Occupational attainment increased with age in both groups.

Conclusions: Young women with disabilities who only have primary or secondary education run a higher risk of having a job that is below their educational level than men at the same educational level. This indicates discriminating mechanisms in the society related to gender and ability.

How Men Cope as Men2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how men perceive their male identity affects their coping with unhappiness in Sweden. The hypothesis was that men lack positive masculine role models. This study is qualitative in nature with discourse analysis. The study has used three theories as guidelines to the interview questions and as basis for the analysis. The theories used are, Hegemonic Masculinity Theory, The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Symbolic Interactionism.  The results of the study show that it is not clear whether men use particular coping strategies that relate to their masculinity. However, it indicates that they believe that being a man has an effect on which coping strategies they use.

Äldreguidens betydelse för kommunens äldreomsorg: - en studie i Sandviken2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 points / 22,5 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the Social Services Act in Sweden, it is stated that every child has the right to be given information and the opportunity to express its will and opinion. The child’s possibility to participate in the process of investigation should be considered with respect to the child´s age and maturity. By reasons of this we have chosen to examine how this is practiced in Swedish courts regarding eight cases where the out of home care of children according to 1 and 2 §§ in LVU is being judged. This has been done through a qualitative study with an attempt of using an argumentation analysis method. The main result of our study is that in the cases we studied the children had participated to a larger extent than described in previous research. Anyhow, when it comes to taking children’s, opinions in account, the cases we studied showed still great flaws and need of improvements. The conclusion of our study is that children's participation is a complex issue where more research is needed. Having this said, we believe that the subject of children’s participation must be more highlighted if a greater change is going to happen in the society.

Att nöja sig med en matchning som är "good enough": En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares upplevelser av att kunna tillgodose barns behov i familjehemsplaceringar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how social workers experience their possibility to meet children’s needs in the work with foster home placement. Five qualitative interviews have been held with social workers within the social services, whose work is related to foster care placements. The results show that social workers experience that they are not able to meet all children’s needs, and therefore they have to value what need is more important than other. Children’s voice and requests are being listened to but are not always being considered as important as the other needs. The result also shows that there is a great shortage of foster homes which makes social workers feel that they have to settle for a match that is “good enough” and hope that everything goes well. The desire to meet every child’s needs is there, but the possibility to do that is limited.

    Abstract [en]

This study explores how the Social Services work with the issue of adolescents using drugs or are at the beginning of a drug abuse and how the professionals view that work. This study is highly based on the real-life experience of professionals and them valuing the profession that they in. A qualitative research method was used to go into the depth of people's feelings and knowledge and therefore got us a better understanding. Semi-structured interviews with open questions was used to create a secure and comfortable place to open up for a good conversation. We have used two different theories,  Labelling Theory and Social Learning Theories in this study to help explain the findings from research and interviews. In the results and analysis, we found four interesting themes that were prominent during the interviews, these were: social exclusion, mental illness, Attitudes towards drugs and preventive work. The themes will be explained and further developed in the analysis which was done through an un-official method with influences such as coding and thematising from the content analysis method. The results of the study showed the importance, but unfortunate lack, of preventive work by the Social Services.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of home based care giver´s experiences of the encounter with clients from three perspectives: quality, time and power. We conducted a qualitative interview study with six people working in home based care. Our results have been analyzed and interpreted by the theories social constructionism and role theory and the concept of relational power. The results of the study demonstrate that time is central for the encounter between home care giver´s and clients affecting both when and how long the care should be performed. Responsiveness and putting the client´s needs in focus are defined as good quality of care, while the power relationship between home care givers and clients changes between each unique encounter. To get a deeper understanding and knowledge of home care givers experiences of the encounter with clients the three aspects: quality, time and power, needs to be highlighted and studied in the same context. The results demonstrate that the three aspects interact in the encounter and analyzing these together creates a deeper understanding of home care giver´s experience of the encounter.

Exploring Gymnasielagen (New law on upper secondary education) from professionals’ perspective – A way to integrate or segregate?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Swedish parliament in a bid to curb the large numbers of unaccompanied minors who are denied asylum status – came up with a law which is famously known as Gymnasielagen. The aim of the study was to explore how professionals in upper secondary schools setting and social services perceive the implementation of this law and how it contributes to integration of unaccompanied minors in Sweden concerning school environment.

Through semi structured interviews, professionals in contact with unaccompanied minors (UAMs) expressed their perception on the Gymnasielagen and its impacts on the lives of UAMs. The advantages and disadvantages of the law together with its contribution to integration of UAMs were investigated.  The results showed that the law renewed hope for UAMs and gave them the chance to start life afresh after the long wait for asylum. There were however significant discrepancies in the law that makes it difficult for UAMs. The condition to get permanent employment after school completion does not seem achievable and puts pressure on them. They are forced to choose courses from a limited number of technical courses that would possibly get them permanent employment.  Integration was also found not to be optimum because of uncertainty among the UAMs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illustrate school counselors´ and teachers´ experience of cooperation between their professions, what conditions there are for this cooperation given by work situation, employers and education and how these conditions can develop. Four school counselors and two primary school teachers were interviewed in a qualitative study. The results show that the informants want to cooperate but possibilities for this are limited, mainly due to staff shortages, and time constraints. These shortcomings also lead to limited possibilities for health promoting and preventive work because the remedial work needs to be done. Conditions given by education programs for cooperation between professions appears to be inadequate. This study contributes with suggestions on how professionals think that the conditions for cooperation between different school professions can be developed, both at the workplace but also during their education.

Participation in women’s groups: a mean to overcome oppression?: A Field Study made in urban Bolivia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor’s thesis is the result of a field study conducted in urban Bolivia. The aim of the study was to get a deeper understanding of the factors that can endorse or limit the potential for the women in a women’s group to influence social and economic agendas. It is a qualitative study that concerns the international social work with a women’s group, whose purpose seek to serve professional management in the production and selling of handicrafts. Participant observations in the women’s group, as well as interviews with two of the international social workers involved with the group were conducted. The results were analysed using a feminist theory perspective, with intersectionality theory as the main tool for analysis. The findings show that the access to income-generating activities can widen the elements of social identification for the women through active learning-processes, and further move towards an image where they become social actors. Concerns regarded if decision-making power were equally distributed among all women in the group.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze narratives of violence and explore how this relates to one's own violence. By means of the theory of differential associations and social learning theory, the development of violent behavior was understood and interpreted. Through a hermeneutic approach, seven life stories from the Stockholm Life-Course Project, were interpreted, where child maltreatment and own use of violence had occurred. The main results showed that the individuals experienced that the childhood had characterized their lives and that they developed a behavior of violence. The violence has been interpreted for strategic purposes but also of pure instinct. The results were problematized with the previous research. The study's conclusion is that exposure to child maltreatment constitutes a risk factor for developing violent behavior. However, the relationship is complex and no causal statements can be made based on our research method and our sample.

Adjustment of Somali women in relation to societal systems in the Swedish society: A qualitative case study of five Somali women’s experiences2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aims of this study are; (a) to explore how Somali women experience their adjustment in the Swedish society in connection to societal systems, and (b) to investigate these women’s perspective of how to make the adjustment process more effective in respect to their needs. The adjustment of the participants has been investigated through a social ecological theoretical framework. Thematic analysis has been utilised to present three themes; assistance, inclusion and self-sufficient which are discussed using social ecological theoretical perspective. Results showed that lack of assistance and sufficient information has led to these women feeling helpless and lost motivation to adjust. The women showed disappointment with regard to self-sufficiency which has not been what they have expected. The suggestions made by the interviewees included assistance in their native language during their first years in the new country, inclusive opening of meeting places and an increased assessment of personal resources when receiving help to find employment. Making adjustment more effective for newly arrived immigrants in new countries is fundamental to international social work.

Gamla bilder, nya identiteter: En queerteoretisk analys av samtida tolkningar och användningar av bilder, berättelser och föreställningar om fornskandinavisk religion2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores the meaning(s) of "treatment effect" within the psychodynamic tradition. The conventional wisdom is that a successful treatment presupposes a transformation of unconscious "material" to a conscious level. The "treatment effect" is reinterpreted as being better understood as changing an old (and detrimental) story into a new tale-an alternative narrative about the self. New possibilities following this conceptual change are introduced with the aid of some concrete examples.

Development from Participation in Women’s Groups: Experiences from Bolivia2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is the result of a field study conducted in urban Bolivia on women‘s group in which women are organised in order to work, get social support and personal capacity building under the responsibility of a licensed psychologist. The study sought to examine the groups by focusing on the experiences of the women in relation to the process of empowerment and the development of the community. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with half of the women participating in the group. Results showed that weekly capacity building workshops and social inclusion have positive effects on the women‘s development in terms of self-confidence and communication skills. The economic development has not been what the women expected and they showed great disappointment regarding that. The results were further analysed by the use of Bronfenbrenner‘s bioecological perspective, an analysis in which the main conclusion drawn was the positive effects of strong development from interaction between actors within the women‘s microsystems. A conclusive analysis has proposed more active participation from the women and more control over the progress of the groups to further promote the process of empowerment.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study is to find out what kind of help social service in one selected municipality in Sweden can provide for children who have witnessed or been victims of domestic violence. Using focus group interview this study investigate how the social workers meet the needs of these children. The bases for our analysis are the Organization Theory and the Attachment Theory, as well as previous research. Important results are that the social services are dependent on notifications in order to do their work and that the most common interventions are foster care, emergency foster care and/or family therapy. The difficulties that social workers perceive their work are unjustified families and heavy workloads. The results showed the difficulties of helping these children, and indicated that children who have witnessed domestic violence not always receive adequate response.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how and in what contexts the Swedish social services are discussed online. To answer this purpose we have studied two Swedish Internet communities, and looked into what was written about social services during a year’s span. To get an overview of our results, we found thematic analysis useful to distinguish general themes. We found, inter alia, that the social services is most often mentioned in the contexts of factual questions or when trying to rally public opinion against the social services. We also found that it’s in the contexts of economy, children, and alcohol and drugs that social services are present in Internet communities. The examined online discourse on Swedish social services was mostly objective and factual, and free from value statements, though often negative. The negative descriptions of the social services often refer to the position of power that the social services possess. It is far less frequent for the social services be described in a positive light.

An insight into professionals’ understanding of self-injury: An explorative study on self-injurious behaviors among adolescents from a social worker’s perspective2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The aim of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of social workers’ perception and experience of encountering and working with self-injurious behaviors among adolescents. A qualitative methodology was used where three semi-structured interviews with counselors employed at youth health centers were conducted. The analysis was carried out through three different themes where the researcher explored in the counsellors’ views on underlying causes, their professional experience and how they worked with the self-injuring problematic. The findings identified self-injury as symptoms of other underlying problems, the close coupling between work experiences and adapting an accepting view of the phenomenon, and the challenges the counsellors’ experience when working with these adolescents. Further findings identified counsellors’ understanding of the relationship between self-injury and suicidality as rather complex.

Right to a Normal Life: The progress of changing attitudes towards people with mental disabilities in Tanzania2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research on mental disability in the Sub-Sahara African context has recently stagnated, and is in need of a revival. The objectives of this study was to examine (i) the current situation of children and youth with mental disabilities in the Morogoro Region, Tanzania, and (ii) how to create more community awareness on rights of people with mental disabilities in the society, to put the discussion of mental disabilities back on the agenda. To fully grasp the cultural context, we have used interviews with local professionals working with children and youth with mental disabilities, in order to gain knowledge of efficient ways to create more community awareness. Over time there has been a change of attitudes due to improved knowledge, mainly through the increased visibility of people with mental disabilities in the society. However there is still a need to create awareness of the rights of people with mental disabilities, especially in rural areas. In order to influence the current situation for this group, we have concluded, within the frames of social constructionism, that networking through a bottom-up approach could be appropriate to share the burden.

Addressing cultural barriers to the provision of aid for victims of domestic violence in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Domestic violence is a global issue, and despite awareness of the issue increasing, the prevalence to which women are being physically and mentally abused is increasing. This study aimed to qualitatively investigate the impact of cultural barriers on the provision of aid to victims of abuse from the perspectives of social workers within a domestic violence care organisation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Social workers within the organisation were interviewed to examine their personal experiences of working with clients from different cultural backgrounds and the results were analysed using the ecological model and the intersectional theory, as well as using earlier research conducted on the issue. The findings showed that the culture of a client can have an effect with regards to abused women seeking help, though the practices of the organisation were generally not impacted based on the cultural background of a client.

Intervention strategies used by University of Gavle when dealing with alcohol problems2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims at exploring the intervention strategies directed to reduce alcohol drinking in Hogskolan in Gavle. Although many students consume alcohol in different settings such as parties and gathering, few of them can understand the whole picture of the school’s intervention strategies. As shown by the research, the social workers in health center attempt to form a collective relationship with students and use the open-ended questions when conducting the counseling. Meanwhile, the employees who are responsible for school bar not only try to create a safer environment based on Responsible Alcohol Drinking but also apply prevention strategies including a high alcohol price and a long waiting line. According to the overall situation in the community, a meeting has been organized among different sectors regarding health center, student union, and municipalities. The topics of the meetings are not only about the current situation in this region but also about the cooperative strategies of each sector. To take a closer look at the school’s alcohol methods, we interviewed two social workers at the health center as well as two employees in the students’ union who are mainly responsible for school bar.

Tidsmätning i äldreomsorgen - Kvalitet eller kontroll?: En kvalitativ studie om hemtjänstpersonal och enhetschefers upplevelser av planeringsverktyget TES.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the 1990’s, Swedish elderly care has undergone many significant changes. Reorganizations and strive for cost-efficiency has characterized work practices. As a result of the reorganizations that have shaped todays home care work, time measurement systems have been introduced in many of the countries municipalities. The purpose of these systems is for home care staff to accurately report the time spent in care work, collecting data to contribute to further development of even more effective practices. In this paper, I asked how homecare personnel and managers feel about the timing systems and how the work and care environment might be affected by the use of such systems. Four individual interviews were conducted in this study and the results demonstrate that experience with time-measurement systems correlates to the sense of influence of the work and duties.

Hinder och framgångsfaktorer för personer med Aspergers syndrom: I steget från skola till arbete2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper was to describe hindering and facilitating factors in the transition from upper secondary school and employment for a person with Asperger’s syndrome. In the process we used general systems theory and made semi-structured interviews with five persons in the network of institutions and associations working with the individual. Our findings showed that the hindering and facilitating factors were basically the same depending of the environmental adjustments. The interviews highlighted the following factors: the recent general unemployment rate in Sweden, selfawareness of the individual and the surrounding environment’s knowledge of the individual’s impairment in relation to Asperger’s syndrome. The highlighted factors were discussed in relation to the regular labour market for a person with Aspergers syndrome after secondary upper school at the levels of micro-, meso- and macrosystem.
