    Abstract [en]

     

    The indoor air climate of a church, with a total building volume of 9500 m3, was investigated from January to October, 2008. During this time, infiltration and ventilation measurements were performed at four periods ranging from 17 to 45 days. The local mean age of air was determined in several locations at different heights using passive samplers and homogeneous emission of PFTs. In addition, the temperature and relative humidity was measured at selected locations. The total infiltration of fresh air into the church was found to be mainly driven by the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. The rate of infiltration ranges from 780 m3/h (deltat=14.8 degrees C) in January to 240 m3/h (deltat=3.5 degrees C) in August. The local mean age of air in the upper and lower air volumes were found to be roughly equal, both during the heating season and in the summer. This indicates that the air volume in the church is well-mixed throughout the year. Transient measurements to assess the effects of doors opening in the summer were also performed using pumped sampling.

    Abstract [en]

    High local concentrations of a pollutant can be the result of high local emission rates of the pollutant or insufficient ventilation. Using tracer gases to map the ventilation in multi-zone buildings combined with measurements of the local pollutant concentration provide the means to discriminate between these causes. In a similar manner, the propagation rate of pollutants from a source to a target zone and the emission rate of the pollutants at the source may be determined quantitatively.

    The paper presents both the theoretical framework for the techniques and experimental examples of the proposed methods.

    Abstract [en]

    This work considers behavior modeling of analog to digital converters with applications in the radio frequency range, including the field of telecommunication as well as test and measurement instrumentation, where the conversion from analog to digital signals often is a bottleneck in performance. The models are intended to post-process output data from the converter and thereby improve the performance of the digital signal. By building a model of practical converters and the way in which they deviate from ideal, imperfections can be corrected using post-correction methods.

    Behavior modeling implies generation of a suitable stimulus, capturing the output data, and characterizing a model. The demands on the test setup are high for converters in the radio frequency range. The test-bed used in this thesis is composed of commercial state-of-the-art instruments and components designed for signal conditioning and signal capture. Further, in this thesis, different stimuli are evaluated, theoretically as well as experimentally.

    There are a large number of available model structures for dynamic nonlinear systems. In order to achieve a parameter efficient model structure, a Volterra model was used as a starting-point, which can describe any weak nonlinear system with fading memory, such as analog to digital converters. However, it requires a large number of coefficients; for this reason the Volterra model was reduced to a model structure with fewer parameters, by comparing the symmetry properties of the Volterra kernels with the symmetries from other models. An alternative method is the Kautz-Volterra model, which has the same general properties as the Volterra model, but with fewer parameters. This thesis gives experimental results of the Kautz-Volterra model, which will be interesting to apply in a post-correction algorithm in the future.

    To cover behavior not explained by the dynamic nonlinear model, a complementary piecewise linear model component is added. In this thesis, a closed form solution to the estimation problem for both these model components is given. By gradually correcting for each component the performance will improve step by step. In this thesis, the relation between a given component and the performance of the converter is given, as well as potential for improvement of an optimal post-correction.

    A measurement set-up of for the characterization of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) is described. The measurement set-up characterizes ADCs up to 16 bits at 350 MHz (option for>500 MHz). Testing dynamic performance of high-speed ADCs is regarded as difficult and expensive. By using existing state-of-the-art instruments in combination with specially designed amplifiers and filters, a high performance, cost efficient test-bed has been built-up. Practical performance corresponds to ADC datasheet and exceeds the performance obtained if using commercial instruments only. Consequently, the measurement results represent the true performance of the ADC without impact from the test-bed. 1.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper presents the prototype of an automatic digital modulation classifier, to be used for signal recognition in frequency bands managed in a flexible way. The prototype is based on a Data Acquisition System, consisting of an Analog-to-Digital converter embedded in an evaluation board, a frame grabber and a Personal Computer. The modulation classifier is able to recognize the most used digital modulations. An experimental validation of the realized prototype in a radio environment is also provided.

    Abstract [en]

    Histogram tests are a commonly used method for characterizing analogue to digital converters. However, different stimuli signals can be used in the histogram test. An overview of common input stimuli for the test is presented. Previous works have analysed the statistical properties of the resulting histograms for different stimuli signals, separately. In this paper, generally applicable results for asymptotically unbiased minimum variance estimator and Cramer-Rao lower bound are derived, irrespective of used input stimuli. Where available, the general expression is compared and found in accordance with signal-specific expressions.

    There is a need for a universal dynamic model of analog to digital converters (ADC) aimed for post-correction. However, it is complicated to fully describe the properties of an ADC by a single model. An alternative is to split up the ADC model in different components, where each component has unique properties. In this paper, a model based on three components is used, and a performance analysis for each component is presented. Each component can be post-corrected individually and by the method that best suits the application. The purpose with post-correction of an ADC is to improve the performance. Hence, for each component, expressions for the potential improvement have been developed. The measures of performance are total harmonic distortion (THD) and signal to noise and distortion (SINAD) and to some extent spurious free dynamic range (SFDR).

    There is a rapid development of the performance of state-of-the-art analog to digital converters (ADC). Resolution and sampling rate are increasing continuously. Sampling rates in the high intermediate frequency (IF) range with sufficient dynamic range for communication applications were introduced about the turn of the millennium. Post-correction methods enable fast ADCs with modest linearity, and thereby weak dynamic performance, for high-speed applications.

    A post-correction procedure involves a characterization of the ADC non-linearity and then utilizing this information by processing the ADC output samples to remove the distortion. ADC characterization is usually performed by estimating ADC characteristics from measurements. Consequently, successful characterizations require both developed test methods and high performance test-beds.

    Characterization and testing ADCs are interesting in many different aspects. Not only that a proper characterization can be used for error compensation, testing is a major factor of cost for manufacturers, and shortening of the test cycle implies large savings. Testing ADCs is complicated, time consuming and demands high-performance instrumentation.

    In this paper a dynamic behavior model of analog to digital converters is proposed. The model is aimed for post correction in wideband applications. The suggested post correction method is a combination of look up tables and model based correction. The model consists of three components. The first is a component represented by a Hammerstein model; that is a static nonlinearity followed by a time invariant linear filter. The second component is a nonparametric model caused by significant deviation from the characterized integral nonlinearity and the output from the Hammerstein model. The third component contains of the remaining deviation and is considered as a random model error. Results from simulations verify that the examined ADC can be described by an ordinary Hammerstein model and a static look-up table.

    Characterization and testing of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are important in many different aspects. Histogram test is a common method to characterize the linearity features of an ADC. Two commonly used stimuli signals are sine waves and Gaussian noise. This paper presents a metrological comparison between Gaussian and sine wave histogram tests for wideband applications; that is we evaluate the performance in characterization of the ADC and the usability of post-correction. A post-correction procedure involves characterization of the ADC non-linearity and then use of this information by processing the ADC output samples to remove the distortion.

    The results show that the Gaussian histogram test gives reasonable accuracy to measure non-linearities. However, it does not result in a suitable model for post-correction in wideband applications. A single-tone sine wave histogram will be a better basis for post-correction. Best result can be obtained if the look-up table is trained with several single-tone sine waves in the frequency band.

    Abstract [en]

    Applications with wide bandwidth and high center frequencies force the analog to digital converter (ADC) to be active in a working range with less dynamic performance in relation to lower frequency bands. However using under-sampling techniques in combination with post-correction methods enable a combination of high sampling rate, wide bandwidth and low distortion. In this paper the employed dynamic post-correction is a combination of look-up tables and model based correction. The results are mainly based on measurements on a 12 bit 210 MSPS ADC. The improvement in total harmonic distortion and spurious free dynamic range are acceptable over a wide frequency range and it is robust to variations in amplitude.

    One method to characterize analogue to digital converters (ADCs) is to use a histogram, where Gaussian noise may be used as stimulus signal. However, a Gaussian noise signal that excites all transition levels also generates input values outside working range of the ADC. Modern signal generators can generate arbitrary signals. Hence, excluding undesired values outside the ADC full scale can minimize test sequences. Truncating the signal to the working range gives further advantages, which are explored in this paper. The Cramér-Rao lower bound and a minimum variance estimator for histogram tests with an arbitrary stimulus are derived. These are applied for truncated Gaussian noise and the result is theoretically evaluated and compared to untruncated noise. It is shown that accuracy increases for a fixed sample length and that variation over transition levels decrease.

    Volterra theory can be used to mathematically model nonlinear dynamic components such as analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This paper describes how frequency domain Volterra kernels of an ADC are determined from measurements. The elements of Volterra theory are given and practical issues are considered, such as methods for signal conditioning, finding the appropriate test signals scenario and suitable sampling frequency. The results show that for the used pipeline ADC, the frequency dependence is significantly stronger for second order difference products than for sum products and the linear frequency dependence was not as pronounced as that of the second order Volterra kernel.

    Abstract [en]

    The housing estates in the outskirts of Sandviken, consist of relatively large scale apartment buildings. This report, that is a B.A. thesis at 10 Swedish university points, aims to investigate and describe the opportunities to improve safety and security for inhabitants in Norra Björksätra. The purpose with this report is to make Norra Björksätra to a more attractive place to live in, by changing the negative trends in the area. Since demolition of at least some of the houses could be of current interest in some years; the purpose is also to investigate whether demolition or renewal of the area is the best solution. The main methods that are used for this investigation is Botrygg05 and Trygghetsvandring. There is also lots of scientific evidence, that have been used, that proves security and safety can be improved with cost saving changes in the physical structure of the area. The report shows that efforts must be done in the illumination of the area and especially in the parking areas and along footpaths. Further more the vegetation, facades and the yards between the houses, are important factors that today affect the feeling of security and safety in a negative way. A variety of renewal proposals are presented in this report and two different approaches for renewal of the area are suggested. Finally, conclusions are made that not only physical changes can remove the negative trends in areas like Norra Björksätra. Social efforts and activities are important factors as well, and without the comprehensive approach of urban renewal projects like this can fail. Since this kind of urban areas often have social problems and simultaneously need an increased popularity to keep and attract inhabitants, the social work and public relations efforts are important.

    2005 antogs en fördjupad översiktsplan för stadsdelarna Rissne, Hallonbergen och Ör i Sundbyberg. Ett av målen med den fördjupade översiktsplanen var att stärka de offentliga rummen i stadsdelarna för att skapa ett livaktigt och varierat stadsliv under dygnets alla timmar, attraktivt för människor i alla åldrar och präglat utav mångfald. Hallonbergsplan är ett ”busstorg” beläget i direkt anslutning till Hallonbergens centrumanläggning. Målet med rapporten var att analysera Hallonbergsplan ur ett socialt perspektiv med fokus på platsens fysiska miljö och vilka förutsättningar den fysiska miljön ger för att skapa det stadsliv som har formulerats som mål med den fördjupade översiktsplanen. Arbetet syftade till att klargöra hur stadslivet ser ut på Hallonbergsplan idag och hur platsen används av dess besökare. Vidare syftade arbetet till att klargöra om det finns behov av kompletteringar i den fysiska miljön för att förbättra förutsättningarna för stadslivet och i så fall vilka. Vid analysen av Hallonbergsplan användes en metod framtagen av arkitekten Jan Gehl. Gehls metod baseras på platsens aktiviteter, hur den används samt vilka kontaktmöjligheter som finns. Metoden analyserar platsen med avseende på sex delar; aktiviteter, rumsform, möjligheter och hinder för kontakt, skydd, komfort samt njutning. Analysen av Hallonbergsplan gav ett detaljerat resultat som visade såväl positiva som negativa egenskaper i den fysiska miljön på platsen inom alla analysens olika delar. Hallonbergsplan har således fysiska egenskaper, såväl rumsliga som visuella, som både hindrar och främjar utveckling av det stadsliv som är målet med den fördjupade översiktsplanen. Hallonbergsplan domineras av nödvändiga aktiviteter, men även frivilliga och sociala aktiviteter förekommer med en koncentration till ytan runt fontänen och centrumhusets ingång. Vid en framtida utveckling av Hallonbergsplan bör platsen få en bättre trafikbalans, utveckla befintliga kvaliteter, förbättra miljön för fotgängare och cyklister, förbättra förutsättningar för varaktiga aktiviteter samt hitta en bättre balans mellan centrumanläggningen och Hallonbergsplan. Vidare bör Hallonbergsplan bli en levande, trygg och varierad plats under dygnets all timmar och ges en inbjudande och öppen rumsform.

    Abstract [en]

    To decrease the electric energy used for heating buildings it has become desirable to convert direct electrical heating to other heat sources. This paper reports on a study of the possibility of using an unconventional method for conversion to avoid installing an expensive hydronic system. The conversion method combines the ventilation and heating systems and uses air instead of water for distribution of heat within the building, taking advantage of thermal forces and the special properties of gravity currents. Full-scale tests have been carried out in a test apartment inside a laboratory hall where the conditions could be controlled. Temperatures and efficiency of ventilation have been measured to ensure that the demands with respect to thermal climate and air exchange were fulfilled. The results show that it is possible to use the method for heating and ventilation when converting the heating system, but further work has to be done to develop a detailed solution that works in practice.

    Distribution of Ventilation Air and Heat by Buoyancy Forces inside Buildings: an Experimental Study2009Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The main task of the ventilation system in a building is to maintain the air quality and (together with the heating or cooling system) the thermal climate at an acceptable level within the building. This means that a sufficient amount of ventilation air at the appropriate temperature and quality must be supplied to satisfy thermal comfort and air quality demands and that this air is distributed to the parts of the building where people reside. Air movements caused by buoyancy forces can determine the distribution of ventilation air within buildings. The purpose of this thesis is to advance the state of knowledge of buoyancy-driven air movements within buildings and to determine their importance both for ventilation air distribution and the maintenance of thermal comfort and air quality in buildings. The work is focused on studying thermally-driven air movements through large openings, both horizontal and vertical (i.e. doorways). The properties of a special type of thermally-driven currents, so called gravity currents, have also been explored. Large vertical openings like doorways are important for air exchange between rooms within a building. Air movements through doorways separating rooms with different air temperatures are often bidirectional and the buoyancy-driven flow rates are often greater than those caused by the mechanical ventilation system alone. Bidirectional flows through doorways can effectively spread contaminants, for example, from a kitchen or a hospital rooms, yet the results of this study indicate that the conversion of a thermally-driven bidirectional flow to a unidirectional flow via an increase of the mechanically forced flow rate requires forced flows that are more than three times greater than the thermally-driven flows. Experiments conducted in this project indicate that the resistance to buoyancy-driven flows in horizontal openings is significantly greater than that in vertical openings. Model tests have shown, however, that this problem may be mitigated if a simple model of a staircase located in the centre of the room (being ventilated) is linked to the horizontal ventilation opening. Gravity currents in rooms occur in connection with so called displacement ventilation as cool gravity currents propagate along the floor that are driven by the density difference of the ventilation air and the ambient, warmer air within the room. As these gravity currents easily pass obstacles and to a certain extent are self-controlling, they can effectively distribute the cool air within rooms in a building. Likewise, warm gravity currents occur when warmer air introduced in a room rises and spreads along the ceiling plane. One application where warm gravity currents may be used to advantage is when converting buildings from electric heating to district hot water heating thus, avoiding the introduction of an expensive hydronic heating system. This report includes a full-scale laboratory study of the basic properties of thermally-driven warm air gravity currents in a residential building and examines the possibilities of using the resulting air movements for the distribution of ventilation air as well as heat. Results from laboratory tests show that this conversion method may prove effective if certain conditions on the layout of the building are fulfilled.

    A building contains a number of large openings like doors and staircases. When the temperature of the spaces connected by these openings differs, the difference in density will cause air movements through them. Horizontal air movements through vertical openings in buildings like doors and windows are well investigated while studies of air movements through horizontal openings like stairwells are less frequent and therefore this work is focusing on this case.

    The paper reports on an experimental study of the possibility of using buoyancy forces to distribute air and heat through horizontal openings. The experiments have been carried out in a scale model with water as the operating fluid.

    The result of the study shows that the flow rate through a horizontal opening is roughly half of the flow rate through a vertical opening for the same conditions, probably caused by the more complex flow pattern in the horizontal opening. A staircase below the horizontal opening will guide the flow somewhat and will cause a small increase of the fluid exchange through the opening.

    There are a number of methods available concerning with distribution of air in buildings. Within control research, one can find new control algorithms which have not yet been used in practice. These new algorithms open the possibility of developing and implementing of new demand controlled ventilation systems.

    In a building the internal air motions are due both to differences in temperature and pressure differences caused by the ventilation system. Therefore, one fundamental question is to what extent it s possible to control the air motions within a building using fan powered ventilation in combination with temperature control.

    The aims of this paper is to report on measurements done to examine the influence of temperature differences between rooms on the air exchange through open doors in a building and to explore the use of modern control technique to minimise the temperature difference.

    The result of the measurements shows that even very small (0.1-0.2°C) temperature differences between rooms cause bi-directional air flows in the doorways of a magnitude that exceed the flow rates caused by the mechanical ventilation system. Therefore it is necessary to control the temperatures in the rooms to make it possible for the ventilation system to distribute the air to those parts of the building where it is needed.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is the result of a thesis as been implemented during the spring term 2009 at

    the University of Gävle.

    The company Bruks produces mobile chippers which are used for chipping logging

    slash, roundwood and parts of trees. The chipper is powered by a separate diesel engine

    and the chipper can be assembled on trucks, trailers or some other carrier vehicles.

    When the chip has passed the chipper drum, the chip is collected in an integrated bin

    which is mounted on the vehicles frame with dumping yokes. When these dumping

    yokes were designed they were probably created with large material dimensions. The

    aim with the degree project is hence to study the strengths of materials and, if possible,

    to suggest an arrangement that can decrease the total weight on the dumping yoke on

    Bruks´ mobile chippers 805 CT.

    The CAD-program Pro/ENGINEER was used during the project for outlining the 2Ddrawings,

    as distributed of constructors on Bruks, to solid 3D-parts. The three-dimensional

    assembly from Pro/ENGINEER was transferred to Pro/MECHANICA. The construction is

    complex and contains many components, and therefore the model has been divided into two

    different parts, the external and the internal dumping yoke.

    The conclusion of the degree project is that the product generally is not over dimensioned.

    However there are many options for optimizing, mainly on the external dumping yokes.

    Abstract [sv]

    Digitala terrängmodeller (DTM) är mycket användbara geografiska produkter som behövs av många organisationer och företag. Som exempel kan nämnas telekommunikationsföretag som behöver terrängmodeller för analys vid planering av områden för nya master, och försäkringsbolag som använder DTM för att identifiera områden med hög eller låg risk för översvämningar när de fastställer premier. Markbaserad (terrester) mätning är en metod för framställning av DTM där man genom fältmätning insamlar data för objekt vars positioner bestäms med plan- och höjdkoordinater. Dessa objekt används sedan för att beskriva terrängen digitalt. Eftersom terrängmodellerna är generaliseringar av markytan, ställs olika krav på deras kvalitet, beroende på användningsområden.

     

    Målet med detta examensarbete var att skapa två digitala terrängmodeller i enlighet med tekniska specifikationen SIS/TS 21144:2004 (specifikation vid framställning av digitala terrängmodeller). Modellerna representerar samma område men inmätningarna genomfördes med två olika mätinstrument, en totalstation och en terrester laserskanner. En bedömning av kvaliteten hos dessa terrängmodeller gjordes, i förhållande till varandra och det uppmätta området.

     

    Det undersökta området är beläget i närheten av Teknikparken i Gävle och består av park-, vatten- och skogsområden med en areal på ca 3500 m². Mätningarna utfördes med totalstation av märket Leica TPS 1203 och terrester laserskanner av märket Leica ScanStation 2 som finns tillgängliga på Högskolan i Gävle och överfördes sedan till dator för bearbetning i lämplig programvara.

     

    En volymberäkning av terrängmodellerna gjordes och skillnaderna mellan dem lagrades i en differensmodell. Denna jämförelsemodell har använts till redovisning av avvikelser mellan DTM.

     

    Enligt min uppfattning representeras markytan bättre i terrängmodellen framställd med hjälp av totalstation. Fördelen med totalstation är i detta fall att koordinaterna i plan och höjd bättre representerar den faktiska markytan, till skillnad från laserskannern, som skannar grästopparna, vilka registreras som markyta. Som framgår av volymberäkningarnas resultat blir skillnaden i volym betydande, eftersom laserskannerns terrängmodell ligger på en högre nivå på platser där vegetationen är tät.

    This paper describes tracer gas measurements at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm. The building was erected 1850-1860 and the architect was Friedrich August Stüler. He created several museums of Fine Arts, among them Neues Museum in Berlin. The museum building in Stockholm has a volume of almost 90 000 m3 and the number of registered objects of art is well over 600 000. The collection includes one of the world’s most prestigious collections of drawings and graphical prints. In this case study the aim was to determine the infiltration through the main entrance and stairwell, through windows and outside walls. The measurement technique used was the Homogeneous Emission Technique added with a 2-zone set up, by using two different tracer gases. Several interesting results were obtained. One result was that more airtight entrance doors would decrease the infiltration into the main stairwell with 40 %. Another result of interest was that the very dry outdoor air was mixed with the indoor air quickly, and that the

    mechanical ventilation system with filters and humidifying units has to be upgraded to compensate for the outdoor air infiltration.

    Abstract [en]

    Objectives.The general objectives of this dissertationwere to examine the effects of acute exposure to meaningfulirrelevant speech and road traffic noise on memory performance,and to explore annoyance responses to noise exposure in theschool environment for pupils and teachers in different agegroups.

    Methods. The thesis comprises seven papers, representingdifferent methodological approaches: experiments, surveystudies and interviews. In the experiments, reported in PapersI-V, 288 pupils and teachers participated in the age groups,13-14 years (n=96), 18-20 years (n=96), 35-45 years (n=48) and55-65 years (n=48). The subjects were randomly assigned to oneof three conditions: (a) meaningful irrelevant speech, (b) roadtraffic noise, and (c) silence. The equivalent sound level inthe noise conditions was set to 66 dB(A). A test batteryreflecting episodic and semantic memory were used. The surveystudies, reported in Paper VI and VII, included 207 pupils(M=13.5) and 166 teachers (M=45.9). Two separate questionnairesmainly comprising items about annoyance, noise sensitivity andstress symptoms were administered. Paper VI presents results offocus group interviews (n=16) treating the main topics:disturbing sounds, emotions, ongoing activity, and suggestionsconcerning future changes. Results. The overall findings showedthat both noise sources affected episodic and semantic memoryto the same degree for all age groups. The results indicatedthat the similarity of semantic content between noise and thetask at hand was not the only suitable explanation model, sincea non-speech noise impaired memory as much as speech.

    Resultsalso indicated that attention effects did notmediate the obtained noise effects and that the noise effectsdid not differ between age groups. Therefore, it seemedunlikely that different memory and attentional capacities stoodout as explanatory factors of the memory effects. Sinceperformances of both episodic and semantic memory tasks wereimpaired, the explanation based on level of access to long-termmemory was also ruled out. However, the episodic memory task,reading comprehension, stood out to be most impaired by noise,suggesting that complexity of the task to perform was ofimportance. For reading comprehension there was also adifferent noise pattern obtained. Participants performance wasin this task, more impaired by meaningful irrelevant speechthan by road traffic noise. This effect indicated thatmeaningful irrelevant speech might reduce the availablecognitive resources necessary for learning the text. Theannoyance models derived from the survey studies indicated thatsensitivity acted as a mediator between hearing status andannoyance, with stress symptoms as an outcome. Whetherannoyance arises or not was also determined by control andpredictability of the noise. In the interviews a differentannoyance pattern was found, in that stress symptoms appearedto be a determinant of annoyance. To be involved, respected,take own responsibility and respect others were suggestions onhow to change the environment to become more silent.

    Conclusions.For both pupils and teachers acute exposureto meaningful irrelevant speech and road traffic noiseinfluenced both the achieving and providing of knowledge. Acommon annoyance pattern was also found for pupils andteachers, where individual and situational factors were ofimportance. To achieve a more silent school environment in thefuture, the pupils pointed out that the interaction betweenthemselves and their teachers was of importance.

    The main objectives in the present study were to examine meaningful irrelevant speech and road traffic noise effects on episodic and semantic memory, and to evaluate whether gender differences in memory performance interact with noise. A total of 96 subjects, aged 13–14 years (n= 16 boys and 16 girls in each of three groups), were randomly assigned to a silent or two noise conditions. Noise effects found were restricted to impairments from meaningful irrelevant speech on recognition and cued recall of a text in episodic memory and of word comprehension in semantic memory. The obtained noise effect suggests that the meaning of the speech were processed semantically by the pupils, which reduced their ability to comprehend a text that also involved processing of meaning. Meaningful irrelevant speech was also assumed to cause a poorer access to the knowledge base in semantic memory. Girls outperformed boys in episodic and semantic memory materials, but these differences did not interact with noise.

    Abstract [en]

    This article reports two studies intended to develop and assess conceptual models of how different factors mediate and moderate the annoyance reaction in school environments. In the first, a survey of 207 pupils was conducted where assumptions about mediators and moderators were formulated and tested. In the best model, general sensitivity and adaptation led to a higher degree of annoyance causing stress symptoms. In the second study, focus group interviews with 16 pupils were performed to set up a model of mediating and moderating factors from pupils' statements in the formation of annoyance. The objective was also to get their opinions about ways to improve the sound environment in school. The interviews indicated a serial arrangement in which stress symptoms and distraction mediated between chatter and disturbance. Thus, the two studies suggested different models for the prediction of the annoyance reaction. The pupils' views about how to improve the school sound environment are discussed in the framework of an empowerment model.

    The objectives in this paper were to analyse noise effects on episodic and semantic memory performance in different age groups, and to see whether age interacted with noise in their effects on memory. Data were taken from three separate previous experiments, that were performed with the same design, procedure and dependent measures with participants from four age groups (13-14, 18-20, 35-45 and 55-65 years). Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (a) meaningful irrelevant speech, (b) road traffic noise, and (c) quiet. The results showed effects of both noise sources on a majority of the dependent measures, both when taken alone and aggregated according to the nature of the material to be memorised. However, the noise effects for episodic memory tasks were stronger than for semantic memory tasks. Further, in the reading comprehension task, cued recall and recognition were more impaired by meaningful irrelevant speech than by road traffic noise. Contrary to predictions, there was no interaction between noise and age group, indicating that the obtained noise effects were not related to the capacity to perform the task. The results from the three experiments taken together throw more light on the relative effects of road traffic noise and meaningful irrelevant speech on memory performance in different age groups.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis aims to investigate SAAB AB´s possibilities to use synthetic instruments in their test systems. The reason for this is reducing costs and the risk of obsolescence which is common when test systems operate for several decades.

    The market around synthetic instruments has been explored in the search for suitable hardware and software. Software has been developed in LabVIEW and synthetic instruments have been created with the help of IVI-drivers. The hardware consisted of PXI-instruments (Waveform generator and Digitizer), connected to a computer using a fiber optic link and PXI-chassi. The created instruments was then compared to common instruments used today, and the comparison turned out well. Advantages, disadvantages and the theory surrounding synthetic instruments is also covered. This thesis is only an introduction and further work will be necessary to implement synthetic instruments at SAAB.

    The thesis also purposes suitable hardware and further development based on the test systems used today, and how it is possible to solve the layer structure.

    Abstract [sv]

    Just nu pågår runt om i Sverige och övriga världen omfattande karteringar för översvämningsrisker. Inte minst på grund av EUs översvämningsdirektiv där det har fastslagits att preliminära riskbedömningar ska ha utförts senast 2011, och för konstaterade riskområden ska riskkartor och riskhanteringsplaner ha producerats senast 2013 respektive 2015. I Sverige har nästan samtliga större vattendrag redan karterats översiktligt, men flera studier har visat att de producerade kartorna är alltför osäkra för att kunna fungera som underlag i många planeringssituationer. Därför måste nytt material tas fram samtidigt som det behövs riktvärden, baserade på kvaliteten av underliggande data, på hur osäkra översvämningskarteringarna är. Denna studie utgör andra delen i ett större projekt ”Kvalitetsbeskrivning av geografisk information för översvämningsmodellering” där det övergripande syftet är att bidra till förståelsen för vilka osäkerheter som finns i samband med översvämningsmodellering. Målet med detta delprojekt är att undersöka hur vattennivåer och översvämningsutbredning förändras vid: stegvis degenerering av höjddata, introduktion av systematiska fel i höjdmodellen, samt olika friktionsvärden på vattendragets botten respektive omgivande mark. Som fallstudie har, liksom i ett tidigare Kris-GIS®-projekt, Eskilstunaån använts. Två områden med olika terrängtyper har undersökts, ett relativt flackt område och ett relativt kuperat område med branta sluttningar ned mot vattendraget, med avsikt att därigenom kunna se skillnader i resulterande översvämning med avseende på terrängens karaktär. Terrängen representerades av miljontals från helikopter laserskannade punkter och vattendragets botten representerades av ekolodade punkter. Vattenflödet simulerades som stationär strömning av storleken 198 m3/s, vilket är SMHIs uppskattning av det högsta beräknade flödet. Som modelleringsverktyg har den endimensionella hydrauliska programvaran HEC-RAS använts och för datapreparering och geografiska analyser har ArcView GIS använts. Följande parametrar undersöktes för att få ett mått på osäkerheten vid försämrade höjddata respektive förändrad markfriktion: vattendragets vattenstånd, bredd, tvärsnittsarea samt översvämningsutbredning. För ökad grad av degenerering av höjddata visade resultaten att vattenstånden endast marginellt ändras medan bredder, tvärsnittsareor och utbredning ändras mer markant. Förutom osäkerhet på grund av degenerering av höjddata (till exempel från referensmodellens 0,78 m cellstorlek till 2-3 m cellstorlek) påverkar av samma storleksordning även osäkerhet i friktionsuppskattning (Mannings n ± 0,01) och inkludering av små systematiska fel (upp till ca 0,1 m i höjdled). Dessutom visade resultaten att osäkerheten skiljer sig markant beroende på hur mycket omgivande mark sluttar mot vattendraget. För planeringsändamål med höga krav rekommenderas höjddata med upplösning upp till 1 m cellstorlek, för allmän detaljplanering upp till 4 m cellstorlek och för översiktlig planering upp till 10-25 m cellstorlek. Vid flacka strandsluttningar bör cellstorleken vara ännu mindre.

    Abstract [en]

    The main focus of this paper is to describe the active hydraulic and sedimentary processes in downstream river reaches during flushing of sediments from reservoirs. During flushing extreme amounts of sediment may be released. Therefore, these processes are different than those downstream from dams and reservoirs not subjected to flushing. Hence, also the effects differ, which knowledge of may be of value for biologists, etc. During flushing of a reservoir a wave will be released to the downstream reaches. This wave can be divided into one water part and one sediment part. Initially they are in phase with each other, but with increased distance downstream from the dam, the transported sediment lags behind the water due to different traveling velocities. The paper treats when and where sedimentation occurs, and how this is related to the different traveling velocities of water and sediment. Also included are discussions on how the downstream effects during flushing differ from non-flushing effects, how visualization of effects can enhance both the analysis and communication with planners, politicians, etc., as well as discussions on how the studies of these effects can benefit from improved field-work methods.

    FOREWORD

    Geoinformatics 2004, the 12th International Conference on Geoinformatics, is the premier research forum for Geospatial Information Research. It commenced in 1992 in Buffalo, and has been held every year since. Meetings have been held in North America and Asia in Beijing (1993), Calgary (1994), Hong Kong (1995), West Palm Beach (1996), Taipei (1997), Beijing (1998), Ann Arbor (1999), Monterey (2000), Bangkok (2001), Nanjing (2002), and Toronto (2003, cancelled due to the outbreak of SARS). This is the premier event organized by the University of Gävle, together with the Association of Chinese Professionals in Geographic Information Science (CPGIS-abroad).

     

    This conference is the first of the series that takes place in Europe, hence the subtitle of the conference - bridging the Pacific and Atlantic. I believe it offers an opportunity for all professionals involved in research and development of geographic information systems, global position systems and remote sensing to discuss new theories and technologies around geoinformatics research.

     

    Based on the extended abstracts and following advice from the program committee, the organizing committee selected 108 papers (involving 264 authors from 29 different countries) around 10 different themes included in the proceedings. The conference themes include some emerging research issues such as location-based services and geovisualization as well as long studied conventional issues. As a post-conference publication effort, some selected papers around special themes will go another round of review process to be published in special issues with some scientific journals.

     

    The organization of the event is rather team-oriented work. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank CPGIS, the University of Gävle, our sponsors and all those individuals involved in making it a successful event, in particular, Kickan Fahlstedt, the conference secretary who took most administrative and organizational matters into her hands; Anders Brandt who read the papers and provided useful comments to the authors; Bengt Eriksson, Stig-Göran Mårtensson, and Bengt Rystedt who are always very supportive for the event; Peter Fisher and David Maguire who share their vision on current geoinformatics research; and all the authors who contribute with their papers of high quality.

    Kartografiska sällskapets utbildningssektion genomför varje år de så kallade lärardagarna, en utbildningskonferens som kretsar kring geografisk information. Tilltänkta deltagare är alla, både utbildare och avnämare, som har intresse av utbildningsfrågor från skol- till universitetsnivå. Den 17 till 18 augusti detta år stod KTH som värd, med Hans Hauska hållande taktpinnen, och med 19 deltagare från ett tiotal olika arbetsgivare.

    A case study of the Eskilstuna River in Sweden is presented. This study is carried out within the project KRIS-GIS®, a Swedish initiative of handling crisis situations, including flooding. The purpose is to show how different resolutions in input elevation data affect the resulting inundation maps. Terrain elevation points at the sides of the river were gathered from an airborne laser altimetry survey, and river bed elevations were gathered from an echosounding survey. The terrain model was constructed in ArcView GIS as a triangulated irregular network (TIN), which served as the base for all later modeling. The hydraulic modeling was done as one-dimensional steady flow in HEC-RAS flow routing software. High-resolution elevation data resulted in better inundation delineation than did lowresolution elevation data. If the mean water discharge was used in the modeling and if the river is narrow, a low resolution could even lead to that the river itself would not be marked as inundated. At high water discharges, the river was usually inundated, but there was great uncertainty if the riparian areas really would be flooded or not. With steep side slopes, the delineation of inundation becomes more certain, while at gentler side slopes, the flow is distributed on a larger surface with a risk that the raster cells will be incorrectly marked regarding inundation. Finally, the use of high-resolution elevation data compared with lowresolution data, makes estimates of friction factor, Manning’s n, relatively more important for correct results in inundation studies.
