    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how and in what contexts the Swedish social services are discussed online. To answer this purpose we have studied two Swedish Internet communities, and looked into what was written about social services during a year’s span. To get an overview of our results, we found thematic analysis useful to distinguish general themes. We found, inter alia, that the social services is most often mentioned in the contexts of factual questions or when trying to rally public opinion against the social services. We also found that it’s in the contexts of economy, children, and alcohol and drugs that social services are present in Internet communities. The examined online discourse on Swedish social services was mostly objective and factual, and free from value statements, though often negative. The negative descriptions of the social services often refer to the position of power that the social services possess. It is far less frequent for the social services be described in a positive light.

An insight into professionals’ understanding of self-injury: An explorative study on self-injurious behaviors among adolescents from a social worker’s perspective2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The aim of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of social workers’ perception and experience of encountering and working with self-injurious behaviors among adolescents. A qualitative methodology was used where three semi-structured interviews with counselors employed at youth health centers were conducted. The analysis was carried out through three different themes where the researcher explored in the counsellors’ views on underlying causes, their professional experience and how they worked with the self-injuring problematic. The findings identified self-injury as symptoms of other underlying problems, the close coupling between work experiences and adapting an accepting view of the phenomenon, and the challenges the counsellors’ experience when working with these adolescents. Further findings identified counsellors’ understanding of the relationship between self-injury and suicidality as rather complex.

Right to a Normal Life: The progress of changing attitudes towards people with mental disabilities in Tanzania2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research on mental disability in the Sub-Sahara African context has recently stagnated, and is in need of a revival. The objectives of this study was to examine (i) the current situation of children and youth with mental disabilities in the Morogoro Region, Tanzania, and (ii) how to create more community awareness on rights of people with mental disabilities in the society, to put the discussion of mental disabilities back on the agenda. To fully grasp the cultural context, we have used interviews with local professionals working with children and youth with mental disabilities, in order to gain knowledge of efficient ways to create more community awareness. Over time there has been a change of attitudes due to improved knowledge, mainly through the increased visibility of people with mental disabilities in the society. However there is still a need to create awareness of the rights of people with mental disabilities, especially in rural areas. In order to influence the current situation for this group, we have concluded, within the frames of social constructionism, that networking through a bottom-up approach could be appropriate to share the burden.

Addressing cultural barriers to the provision of aid for victims of domestic violence in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Domestic violence is a global issue, and despite awareness of the issue increasing, the prevalence to which women are being physically and mentally abused is increasing. This study aimed to qualitatively investigate the impact of cultural barriers on the provision of aid to victims of abuse from the perspectives of social workers within a domestic violence care organisation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Social workers within the organisation were interviewed to examine their personal experiences of working with clients from different cultural backgrounds and the results were analysed using the ecological model and the intersectional theory, as well as using earlier research conducted on the issue. The findings showed that the culture of a client can have an effect with regards to abused women seeking help, though the practices of the organisation were generally not impacted based on the cultural background of a client.

Intervention strategies used by University of Gavle when dealing with alcohol problems2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims at exploring the intervention strategies directed to reduce alcohol drinking in Hogskolan in Gavle. Although many students consume alcohol in different settings such as parties and gathering, few of them can understand the whole picture of the school’s intervention strategies. As shown by the research, the social workers in health center attempt to form a collective relationship with students and use the open-ended questions when conducting the counseling. Meanwhile, the employees who are responsible for school bar not only try to create a safer environment based on Responsible Alcohol Drinking but also apply prevention strategies including a high alcohol price and a long waiting line. According to the overall situation in the community, a meeting has been organized among different sectors regarding health center, student union, and municipalities. The topics of the meetings are not only about the current situation in this region but also about the cooperative strategies of each sector. To take a closer look at the school’s alcohol methods, we interviewed two social workers at the health center as well as two employees in the students’ union who are mainly responsible for school bar.

Att leva med ADHD som vuxen2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was to examine life with ADHD as an adult in three areas: work, leisure activities and daily life, and thereby increase the understanding of these individuals. The empirical research of the study was interviews with three adult males with ADHD. The result from the interviews was analyzed using theories of coping strategies and SOC. The result revealed a width of how the disability ADHD affected the interviewee’s lives.  It was mainly the symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity that affected work, leisure and everyday life. The difficulties were manifested in very different ways. The symptom hyperactivity could in some situations be seen as a benefit. Since ADHD affected the interviewees in different ways a number of various coping strategies were given as examples of how the interviewees deal with stressful situations in live. Various examples of how ADHD affected the interviewee’s experience of SOC were reviled in the study.

    Abstract [en]

During the 1990’s, Swedish elderly care has undergone many significant changes. Reorganizations and strive for cost-efficiency has characterized work practices. As a result of the reorganizations that have shaped todays home care work, time measurement systems have been introduced in many of the countries municipalities. The purpose of these systems is for home care staff to accurately report the time spent in care work, collecting data to contribute to further development of even more effective practices. In this paper, I asked how homecare personnel and managers feel about the timing systems and how the work and care environment might be affected by the use of such systems. Four individual interviews were conducted in this study and the results demonstrate that experience with time-measurement systems correlates to the sense of influence of the work and duties.

Hinder och framgångsfaktorer för personer med Aspergers syndrom: I steget från skola till arbete2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper was to describe hindering and facilitating factors in the transition from upper secondary school and employment for a person with Asperger’s syndrome. In the process we used general systems theory and made semi-structured interviews with five persons in the network of institutions and associations working with the individual. Our findings showed that the hindering and facilitating factors were basically the same depending of the environmental adjustments. The interviews highlighted the following factors: the recent general unemployment rate in Sweden, selfawareness of the individual and the surrounding environment’s knowledge of the individual’s impairment in relation to Asperger’s syndrome. The highlighted factors were discussed in relation to the regular labour market for a person with Aspergers syndrome after secondary upper school at the levels of micro-, meso- and macrosystem.

Cannabisanvändande ungdomar: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med socialarbetare2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to obtain a deeper understanding of young people's use of cannabis. To do that is this study made out of a qualitative interview method where we have interviewed four social workers and one policeman. All informants have experience of working with young people who used cannabis. To analyse the findings raised during the interviews, we have chosen to use the theoretical perspectives of social constructionism and the development of psychopathology. Furthermore, we have in the study used the risk and protective factors to analyse the factors that can influence a young person use of cannabis. The result indicates that the factors behind the use of cannabis are mental illness, neuropsychiatric diagnosis as ADHD or ADD and a problematic home. This result further discussion of risk factors such as a lack of schooling and whether sex has any significance or difference among those who use cannabis as an intoxicant. One of the main results that emerge is that mental illness is the most common risk factor for young people who use cannabis, and who is current to the social services.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze the social constructions social workers formed as result of working with women who had been victims of male partner violence. The social constructions analyzed came from the social workers descriptions of the client group’s situation. The question addressed was what social constructions a selection of social workers had that had worked with women who experienced violent abuse from men that they lived in a relationship with. The question was focused on the following themes: the women´s life conditions, the relationship to the man, the violence in the relationship, and what the factors affected whether the woman stayed or left the abusive relationship. The method used was semi-structured qualitative interviews. Five professional social workers from different shelters and social services institutions were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed from a social constructionist perspective with support from earlier research in the area. The most important finding from the study, and conclusion, was that the social constructions the professional social workers made from working with the abused woman was that the entire life situation of the abused women was negatively affected by the abuse from the man. The abused women were ambivalent in their approach to the abusive man, and they lived on the hope that the abusive man would change his abusive ways. The women did not experience the violence as something normal and they always resisted the violence in some way.

    Abstract [en]

Title:  Will you cope, without your family? – The importance of support for youths who are subject to honour related violence.

The aim of this study has been to examine which support has been given to the youths who have been subjected to honour related violence and their experiences about the support. The data were collected through four semi-structured, qualitative interviews with youths who had separated from their families. The result showed that according to an intersectional perspective the individual needs should dictate the support offered and that honour related violence is a complex problem. System theory, shows us that it is important to belong to a family system, whether it is biological or not – is of less importance. The social services and the foster homes are important for the youths in their efforts to cope without their families Based on the results, our conclusion is that many need a lot of therapy in order to return to a “normal life”.

Självskadebeteende på sociala medier: En litteraturöversikt om ett nutida fenomen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects social media can have on people who self-harm. Based on ten research articles published between 2009-20019, which we selected through a systematic search in six databases. An interactive literature review was made and thematic analysis used. Four themes were identified, the social media-based community for self-harming, the reasons individuals publish material of self-harm, the negative and positive aspects of self-harm content. Our findings show that these individuals experience a sense of community, understanding, support, and companionship on social media. In turn, support on social media can trigger further self-harm, complicate recovery, and encourage individuals not to seek professional help. The reason they contribute to the self-harm community is, among other things, to be a part of the community, maintain a self-harm ritual, to increase understanding in society, or as an artistic expression.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this study was to create an understanding of how paramedics have experienced situations where they were exposed to threats and violence, and how the staff described how threats and violence could be prevented. Five semistructured interviews was performed in a mid sized region in Sweden. The main result showed that all respondents, at some occasion, have felt threatened. There have also been situations where they have been exposed to violent events. Patients with certain illnesses could contribute to the feeling of being exposed to threats and violence; although, if the employer had provided education and support in this, then maybe the situations could have been prevented. Our most important conclusion was that there have been little to no preventive work against threats and violence, except for a few courses, although, all respondents felt that experience had the biggest impact for how threatening and violent situations were handled.

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to investigate how school drop-outs describe their way back to any type of occupation. The authors carried out a qualitative study with interviews based on an interview guide to be able to answer the studies questions at issue, with the intention to capture knowledge about the young adults’ opinion concerning turning-points and the meaning of self-image and relations in the surroundings. In a total, four interviews were carried out with young adults in the ages of 17-20 years, whom had dropped-out of high-school but were, at the time of the interviews, back in some kind of occupation. The authors used previously published science articles, along with the theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism and KASAM to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that all of the young adults had experienced some kind of turning-point during their way back to an occupation, which they found to be substantial. There were some variations in how these turning-points occurred; they turned out to be an event as well as a meeting. Further on, the authors has found that self-image have had a great effect on the young adults´ possibilities to handle turning-point situations, as well as their motivation for studies, and that relations with factors of guidance and a respectful treatment has been crucial for the step towards an occupation.

An exploratory study of the methods and strategies implemented to integrate unaccompanied minors in five residential home in Sweden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore what methods the personnel in five residential care homes in Götaland, Sweden, implement to integrate unaccompanied minors. The study investigated how and what methods are constructed as well as how the social interaction between the unaccompanied minors and the personnel at the homes bring about the learning of the methods. Five face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed through the perspective of social construction and social learning theory. The result revealed that the methods are not clearly identified by the personnel. The personals are still learning how to work with unaccompanied minors from their experiences. This indicates that the practice is at its infant stage. The study found a wide variety of methods, which were based on the child and where some methods intend to build good relationship, to integrate the children into society and to facilitate the development of strategies and methods. The study also addresses the issue of how the methods and strategies can be affected by the dynamic migratory flow and the question of evidence based practice within this field.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how social workers may define and apply the children's perspective, and how they perceive their discretion when administering social assistance. A qualitative method consisting of semi-structured interviews with four social workers is used. The results show that there are individual differences in the view on what the child perspective entails and how it is put into practice. The social workers’ focus tends to be on the adults’ perspective. Workload, lack of knowledge and the organizational culture are described as influencing factors. There seems to be significant room for discretion in assessments and decisions, although limited by law and guidelines. The social worker's position between the organization's demands and the client's needs seems to be complicated. The results are in line with previous research. It is proposed that in future research investigate the use of the child perspective after implementation of the UN convention on the rights of the child as legislation in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze subject positions given to case workers and elderly people within community-based elderly care in two different newspapers. The method used was discourse analysis, including tools such as categorization of discourses, transitivity and modality. The theoretical framework was built on a set of socio-political discourses. The findings of the study were largely in agreement with previous research, identifying a limited set of positions for both elderly and case workers. The former were mostly presented as either passive, bereft of rights and described by others, or as active users of community services. The latter were portrayed on the one hand as passive in relation to the users of community services and to their employers, and on the other hand as active government officials with a great deal of control and decision-making power towards elderly people. These positions are consistent primarily with individualized socio-political discourses.

Vägen ut har ju inte direkt varit rak: en narrativ studie om upplevelser av utträde ur långvarig hemlöshet2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how managers and employees experience the care for young adults with mild intellectual disabilities and if something needs to be done to make the support more adjusted to the these individuals. This was conducted with a qualitative study where two managers and two employees, who meets the target group of the study thought their profession, was interviewed. The interview guide covered the four main themes; normalization, individuality, alienation and social belonging. The results were analyzed through an inductive thematic analysis method through the theories SOC and empowerment. The most striking result was that the informants all agree that the support they have to offer isn’t adapted for the target group, especially when it comes to self-determination, building a family and labor market.

Newly arrived pupils and violence: a CDA analysis of political advices regarding strategies and responsibilities for various actors in Swedish education2017In: Education Sciences and Society, ISSN 2038-9442, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 137-153Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the Convention of the right of the Child (CRC) it is stated that all children should be protected from all kinds of violence. However war, social conflicts and climatic catastrophes have placed immigrant children at risk to object for violence. The purpose of this paper is to study how Sweden politically advice actors within the educational field to approach newly arrived pupils in education by placing it in relation to research about violence. What is particularly payed attention to in the policy document is need to oppose the following risks: b)being in risk of exclusion, c) facing perceptions of assimilation, and f) a lack of clear responsibilities amongst the actors assisting the immigrant children. A fuzziness of responsibilities is at time created with concepts such as “the school should”.

Education for the Other is the most dominant strategy emphasizing that the newly arrived child’s needs in education should be recognized as well as the importance to distribute what is lacking to promote the pupil’s development. The advices do not say anything about the content of knowledge required amongst various actors in order to do analysis of processes.

Working against trafficking: Perspectives on collaborative work between Swedish administrative authorities.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore prerequisites for collaboration between Swedish authorities in their work with women exposed to trafficking with sexual purpose. A qualitative research method was used. Three over-phone semi-structured interviews and one face-to-face semi-structured interview were conducted with professionals from the County Administrative Board, the Social Services and the Swedish Migration Agency. The results were analysed thematically through three themes with relating subthemes. The results showed that the professionals perceived collaborative work as important in order to treat each aspect of the diverse issue that is human trafficking, as well as to exchange knowledge and experiences with the involved authorities. Moreover, the professionals described that prerequisites for a functioning collaborative work are; clear assignation of roles, sufficient time and budget, and that each agency is aware of the importance of collaboration. Some difficulties within collaborative work highlighted by the participants were; different opinions and agendas between the agencies and lack of knowledge. Finally, some implications for future research were noticed, for example a lack of research regarding collaborative work between agencies against human trafficking for sexual purposes.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about parents’ perception of child poverty in Sweden, how children get affected by family finances and how children can handle difficulties with being poor. The parents in this study express that there are times when the children do not have the same opportunities as their peers. According to the parents it is because of the families’ shortcomings in the economy, which can be seen through their leisure activities, clothes and holidays. Not being able to afford brand name clothes can give offense and be stigmatizing. Based on the parents' stories, we have interpreted the children's handling of situations through different strategies. The children mainly use adaptation and avoidance strategies to handle different situations.  Adaptation strategies are where the child adjusts and accepts the situation and avoidance trategies where the child avoids situations that are stigmatized. The children also use action strategies where they actively try to change their situation.

Different socities, different conditions: Lessons from anti-doping in elite-sport on a global level2017In: Doping in sport, doping in society - Lessons, themes and connections: Book of abstracts, Aarhus University, Department of Public Health , 2017, p. 7-8Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Justice and fairness in sport is fundamental for its legitimate existence. On a global level, the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency and the regulatory framework World Anti-Doping Code was formed largely as a consequence of the need for a coordination of the work against performance enhancing drugs in sports. Today, the anti-doping system often means application of rules and "best practice" developed in the cultural West for the cultural rest. Research on anti-doping policy or practice not only tends to be based on deductive models, these models may also assumingly be culturally biased. Moreover, we have relatively little knowledge of the practical conditions for individual athletes concerning implementation of the rules in different contexts around the world. This presentation, however, adds to the existing research with new empirical findings from interview data on diverging conditions for elite athletes in different social, cultural and geographical contexts. Through exploring how 13 elite athletes from five continents and three different sports federations perceived the anti-doping programme, we were able to show that global anti-doping policy was implemented in different contexts under different conditions. These differences included infrastructure, knowledge and support. How participation in anti-doping procedures on an everyday basis is endorsed may thus vary around the world. By examining our interview data on the athletes’ perceptions and experiences in relation to theories of procedural justice, we were able to analyse the legitimacy of anti-doping in practice. These findings suggest that inequities and structural injustice emerge on an individual level because of the varying contexts and conditions. In turn, the consequences may have implications for the legitimacy of the anti-doping work. In order to understand implementation processes of regulations, we propose that anti-doping policy-making pay attention to differences that may exist on an individual and practical level. Perspectives that underpin regulations applied globally should in other words be sensitive to varying contexts and conditions.

The study’s purpose is to examine the relation between youth unemployment and crime, so called youth crime. The focus of the study lies on the relation between unemployment and crime according to professionals’ perspective and how this confirms with former research. The empirical has been collected through qualitative interviews and analysed with stigma as main theory. The result of the study indicates that unemployment has a big impact on crime. However, there are several other parts involved, such as residence, health, education and upbringing. The conclusion is that all parts affects one and another and creates the bigger picture plus that the problematic area is complex, alienation is pervasive.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to study how Swedish text- based media constructed their portrayal of victims suffering from criminal violence and also to see if there were any gender differences in these portrayals. The study was made by using a qualitative content analysis based on 24 newspaper articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. The analysis and coding took support from Butler’s gender- theory and Christie’s “ideal type victim”- theory. The analysis resulted in multiple similarities and differences between the female- and male victims. The greatest similarity was the portrayal of the victims as legitimate, although none of the 24 cases fell under the most stereotypical portrait of a crime- victim. The most interesting difference in the results was that the men’s obtained legitimate and dignity despite several showed some kind of doubtful lifestyle.

    Abstract [en]

BBIC is a working method, documentation and processing system with children’s needs in focus. The purpose is to promote social work based on knowledge. During 2014, the National Board of Health and Welfare was authorised by the government to further develop BBIC. The study partly focused on making BBIC easier to use and to increase the participation of children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to look into social workers’ experiences after that the revision took place. Six interviews were conducted in three different municipalities in the middle of Sweden. The result of the study showed that the revised BBIC contributed to a significantly simpler, clearer and above all a more structured way of working, reducing the time previously used on documentation. This in turn meant that it became easier to inform and to involve children and adolescents. The study result therefore indicates that BBIC has become easier to use after the revision and that the participation has increased.

Anhörigvårdare: en roll som tar över tillvaron 24 timmar om dygnet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Intervjuerna berörde även könsspecifika skillnader i anhörigvårdarrollen.

Consequences of Internet (mis)use: views among university students and social workers2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to explore views on consequences of Internet use among young people sampled at a Swedish university. Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were used. The quantitative data were gathered by a quantitative survey conducted among 50 university students at the University of Gävle. To broaden the picture, face-to-face interviews were conducted with two social workers (from Sweden and Russia). In order to analyze and interpret the data collected, Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development and learning theory were applied. Symptoms of Internet addiction proposed by Young (1998a) were used to examine whether the data collected demonstrated presence of Internet addiction among sampled university students. The results indicated that the majority of respondents had an excessive use of Internet, however, the female participants and different aspects of their everyday life seemed to be more influenced by Internet use compared to the male respondents. Another conclusion is that the field of social work has to increase the knowledge and competence in diagnosing the symptoms of excessive Internet use. Internet related disorders are problems of increased proportion and mental health counsellors need to be prepared to meet a growing demand in the area of social work.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how home care staff experience, detect and handle intimate partner violence among elders as well as investigate the level of knowledge they perceive they and the workgroup possess concerning intimate partner violence. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews with four home care staff. The main results showed that home care staff have difficulties detecting all forms of violence, the most common signs of violence they discovered were bruises, injuries and mean words. The staff experienced limitations in their professional role in relation to intimate partner violence and difficulties in knowing the boundary for what is considered violence. Education in the field is missing and the conception about the level of knowledge differed between the staff. The authors argue that there is a need for more education and knowledge to increase the possibility to detect intimate partner violence among elders.

    Abstract [en]

Women's vulnerability to domestic violence is a widespread social problem that causes problematic consequences for society and to the individual. I wondered what significance the professionals' knowledge has to help abused women, how professionals and abused women describe abused womens needs, and how the professionals work with and consider important in meeting with and helping abused women. Six qualitative interviews with a social worker who were working as a therapist in the social services, as councilors and in women's shelter were performed. The results showed that the professionals regarded specific knowledge of domestic violence as a prerequisite for being able to help the woman adequately. Furthermore, it appeared that the woman's needs could be psychological need of support and processing, but also help with practical issues to sort out their situation. The social workers were mapping the violence and the situation of the abused women. The mapping could determine the woman's needs and potential contributions.

    Abstract [en]

The perception of individuals with a mild intellectual disability as parents has changed over time. The devolpment has resulted in that the normalization principle is considered to be valid when these individuals become parents. This group of individuals has gone from being considered as incapable parents to being considered parents like anybody else. The purpose of this study was to examine the way social workers understand and work with this group of parents and their children if they suspect that the children is being maltreated. We conducted a qualitative study using a focusgroupinterview with five participants in whom all of them are social workers working with children and families that need support. The results show that social workers experience that parents with a mild intellectual disability have some problems in their parenting - like any other parent. They also experience that the children of these parents are exposed to several risk factors. An important conclusion of this essay is that it seems to be taboo to question parents with a mild intellectual disability's parenting skills. This makes it difficult for the social workers in their work with these families.

    Abstract

The purpose with this study is to study the individual setting of salary rates among branch heads. We have chosen to look deeper into which criteria that are the base for the branch heads’ individual setting of wage rates within geriatric care and the care of disabled people. One other aspect we have looked into is how the setting of salary rates appears from a gender perspective. The empirical material in our thesis consists of both qualitative and quantitative methods in the shape of a questionnaire study and three open interviews. Our theoretical benchmarks are made up of the gender and power order and economic sociological perspectives. This study has partially brought a somewhat for us surprising result concerning the setting of salary through a gender perspective. The individual setting of salary rates is based on several factors like education, years within the profession and work experience. Our questionnaire study showed that most of the branch heads´ asked think that individual settings of salary rates are positive. Nevertheless there are not as many of those that are satisfied with their salary trend. Our interviews showed that gender does matter at the time of employment, because the organization strives for employing more men in this female-intensive occupation. Men generally had a higher average salary than their female colleagues when we compared informants with similar suppositions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate unaccompanied refugee children's perception of the integration process in Sweden. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six young adults who came to Sweden as unaccompanied refugee child. The results have been analyzed through the theories empowerment, system theory and role theory. The main results show that the key to integration primarily is the ability to speak the Swedish language. The language was also the main obstacle for successful integration the study shows. Furthermore, the results show that the asylum process is perceived as difficult and residence permits are a prerequisite for integration. A warm reception and a strong support are of great importance when arriving in Sweden. Moreover, adaptation to norms, rules and Swedish culture became a natural part of the integration process. The social networking is important for significant well-being. Their expectations have been met and they have been successful in their integration process. They have established themselves in a favorable life situation in Swedish society and are optimistic about their future.

    Abstract [en]

Through the years the child perspective is a word that has developed in its meaning and significance. The aim of this study was to investigate how family law investigators experience that the child perspective is being used in family law work. Four family law investigators in a middle-sized municipality in Sweden were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. The most significant results was that the child perspective, according to the family law investigators, has grown stronger but that there is’ still a need for development, for example listening to the voice of children and letting them participate more. The family law investigators experienced a challenge in the reinforcement of the child perspective in their work because of the parents’ power and a fear of making the child’s situation worse and that it also was time pressuring. They saw possibilities in the development of collaboration and in the legislation. The question if the social construction of children’s position in society needs to change in order for the child perspective to continue to be further strengthened and developed is discussed.

Att hjälpa eller stjälpa?: en kvalitativ studie kring drabbades erfarenheter av katastrofbiståndet efter tsunamin 20042012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to examine school counselors experiences of working with newly arrived students. To fulfill the purpose, five qualitative interviews with school counselors were conducted. The school counselor profession is covered by a large degree of discretion, but it was limited by various organizational limitations, mainly the lack of resources in schools. Which resulted in an excessive number of students per school counselor, which led to a lack of time in their work. The school counselors had a holistic perspective in their work with the students, by paying attention to both the psychological and social needs. The most prominent need of the students were the need to acquire the swedish language. To meet the needs of the children the school counselors worked on an individual, group and community level. This study also showed that it was important to collaborate with other professions and a special understanding in form of cultural competence was needed.

Segregation föder segregation: En studie av hur boendesegregationen inverkar på ungdomars utbildningsmöjligheter2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study was to examine the impact of residential segregation on young people´s educational opportunities. The study included 15 scientific articles and reports which were analyzed by using system theory and Bourdieu´s theory of capital forms. The results showed that the social environment is an imortant factor in explaining the academic performance of young people. The adults in the residential area are important as role models. Norms and behaviors in the immediate environment play a crucial role in the socialization of young people. A determining factor of young people´s academic performance and on their school choice is which forms of capital forms and resources they bring from their childhood. With less capital, it also follows that they can not acquire the resources that are necessary to choose a resourceful school instead of the school in the neighbourhood. The conclusion shows that young people´s school results are affected by the system they are part of and how strong capital resources they bring. Where and how you live, do have an impact on young people’s opportunities for further studies.

Vilka faktorer kan påskynda eller förhindra integration?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 points / 22,5 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis analyses the use of horse-assisted therapy amongst mental health practitioners within multiple sectors. The aim was to establish whether a change could be detected in participants. Adopting a qualitative approach the research was mainly conducted through four semi-structured interviews with equine-assisted therapy practitioners.

The results show that the practitioners believe the horses improve the interactions between the practitioners and participants. The practitioners believe this improvement is due to the non-verbal participation of the horse in interface with the practitioner and participant and that the horses increase the participants’ trust in others as well as their confidence when establishing relationships with others.

The participants gained an opportunity to create meaning within their lives through everyday routines, structures and feel a sense of context. Some of the practitioners struggled to identify what causes the change but recognised a positive change in the majority of participants.
