    Abstract [en]

Title: The future starts in school – Principals’ experience of managing school social work in elementary schools. The aim of this essay was to examine how five principals described their experiences of managing the school social work in elementary schools. This is important to study since student educational and social failure in school has increased. Using qualitative interviews with principals from both municipal and privately owned schools we examined how the principals’ experiences influenced the school social work. The study included how the principals described their complex professional role and if the principals had experienced any changes in the school social work over time. In the literature on which this essay was based on, school social work was described as complex and time consuming. The essay’s conclusion is that school social work today includes a lot of social work, which takes time and financial resources from the educational process. We question if this can be a contributing reason to the decrease in knowledge results among Swedish students.

Vilket stöd erbjuder samhället föräldrar till adoptivbarn med funktionsnedsättning?2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim was to present a general view of what is found in earlier research on adults with disabilities and their vulnerability to sexual crimes. The study covers two issues: (1) How do the disability affect vulnerability to sexual crimes according to the articles? (2) How do the articles construct sexual crimes? To answer the aim a scoping review with a total of nine quantitative and qualitative scientific articles were used and a thematic analysis was conducted. The results were analyzed from a social constructionist perspective. The results showed that an individual with a visible disability was described as a symbol of weakness. The results also showed that the articles chose to construct sexual crimes as an individualistic problem. Moreover the results showed that an individual with a disability "consents" to sexual intercourse because of low self-esteem. The conclusion is that more research is needed in order to develop measures to prevent sexual crimes against individuals with disabilities to improve their feeling of security in society.

"När det är som jävligast borde det finnas ett system": Socialtjänstens klienters erfarenheter av samverkan2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate clients' perceptions of collaboration within the social service and between social services and other actors in human service organizations. A qualitative method was used and six semi-structured interviews were conducted with clients whose children were involved with social services. The results highlight that clients pay attention to other factors in the collaborative processes than professionals do. The interviewed clients expressed that collaboration is needed, but becomes difficult and time consuming the more actors involved. They described themselves as having a strong driving force and being help-seeking, as well as having many important roles in the collaborative processes that are often overlooked by both themselves and professionals. The results show that the relationship between social workers and clients play an important role where the social worker can relieve the client by acting as a disseminator of information.

Berättelser om vägen mot ohälsa: - en narrativ studie bland socionomer inom socialtjänsten.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ur elden in i askan: En kvalitativ studie om det sociala nätverkets betydelse för ensamkommande barn2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Titel: Ur elden in i askan.

Keywords: unaccompanied refugee children, social network, risk and resilience, social work.

Authors: Karin Bodå och Leila Silva

The main purpose of this study is to illuminate and describe the importance of having a social network for unaccompanied refugee children in Sweden. Using qualitative interviews this study looks at their possibilities to create a social network in Sweden and how their network helps them to solve problems. Knowledge of this subject is important for social workers, in order to be able to encourage and help unaccompanied refugee children to build a social network. The base for our analysis is attachment theory, coping theory, social network theory, KASAM theory, risk and resilience theory, system theory are used to give deeper insight into experiences of four unaccompanied refugee boys. Important results found that their social networks affected their possibilities to handle problems. They felt that being surrounded by people who supported them made them feel less lonely. Further results showed that they felt limited in creating a social network during their first time in Sweden, mainly because of language difficulties, culture differences and the feeling of not being accepted. Finally we found out that some had negative experiences of social workers. Social worker’s approach affected their wellbeing.

Emotionsreglerings och emotionsperceptions betydelse för hälsofrämjande ledarskap2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to determine if it is possible to predict employees' life satisfaction, psychological well-being and perceived relationship to the immediate supervisor by managers emotional perception skill and emotion regulation. This was done by 38 managers whom did a computer-based emotional perception test and answered an emotional regulation questionnaire. A questionnaire consisting of parts from Satisfaction With Life Scale, SF-1 and QPS Nordic was answered by a total of 213 employees. The findings of the study showed that the results from the emotion perception test and self-reported use of reappraisal among managers explained 28 % of the scores on the Satisfaction With Life Scale among the employees. The results are discussed in terms of managers creating a positive atmosphere in the workplace, identifying social problems and resolve conflicts, when they are skilled at emotion perception and reevaluate their own emotions.

What Places Adolescents and Adults, Respectively, in Need of Social Assistance?

A Qualitative Study of How Social Workers Whom Administrate Financial Assistance for Adolescents and Adults, Respectively, Describe Reasons Behind the Need of Social Assistance Amongst Their Clients

The purpose of this essay was to study and compare how social workers whom administrate social assistance for adolescents and adults, respectively, describe reasons behind the need of social assistance amongst their clients. This was done due to the use of qualitative interviews with a total of six social workers. Of these six, three administrated social assistance for adolescents while the other three did the same for adults. Prior research of poverty attribution greatly inspired this essay. This research shows that public explanations for poverty vary from individualistic to structuralistic/social and fatalistic attributions. Research also argues that explanations amongst social workers, specifically, may constitute further attributions which are unique to that group and that can appear alongside the aforementioned attributions. The results of this essay showed that both groups of administrators explained the need of social assistance in similar ways. Although many of the mentioned reasons were similar, making up several of the aforementioned attributions, some of them varied between the groups. Furthermore, a new set of attributions emerged from one group of administrators.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine if and how victims of domestic violence disclose their experiences to their social network, how the social network responds to the violence and the significance of the network responses relative to the evolvement of the violence. The study is based on five semi-structured interviews with women who have been exposed to different forms of domestic violence. The results, which were analysed using a narrative analysis and interpreted by symbolic interactionism and the theory of the leaving process, shows that women disclose their experiences about domestic violence to both informal and formal contacts. Disclosure often happened in the aftermath of a serious violent incident. In the majority of cases, women experienced supportive reactions that also contributed to the final break up from their relationships. Some of the women, however, experience negative attitudes and rejection, in these situations an absolute break-up was not completed.

Can people with disabilities gain from education?: Similarities and differences between occupational attainment among persons with and without disabilities2014In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 49, no 2, p. 193-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: More knowledge is needed ofoccupational attainment of persons with disabilities, i.e. the relationship between their educational level and their profession, and factors of importance for this relationship.

Objective: To compare occupational attainment among persons with and without a disability.

Method: 3 396 informants with disabilities and 19 004 non-disabled informants participated (control group) in a survey study by Statistics Sweden. The informants with disabilities were divided into six groups.

Results: Occupational attainment did not differ between the disability groups, neither between persons with and without a disability. Follow-up analysis showed that men with disabilities with primary or secondary school had an occupation above their educational level to a significantlylarger extent than women with disabilities. This pattern was even clearer in comparison with the control group. Persons without disabilities, with secondary or higher education, were more successful in the labor market than persons with disabilities. Occupational attainment increased with age in both groups.

Conclusions: Young women with disabilities who only have primary or secondary education run a higher risk of having a job that is below their educational level than men at the same educational level. This indicates discriminating mechanisms in the society related to gender and ability.

Employment opportunities for persons with different types of disability2015In: Alter;European Journal of Disability Research ;Journal Europeen de Recherche Sur le Handicap, ISSN 1875-0672, E-ISSN 1875-0680, Vol. 9, no 2, p. 116-129Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The employment status of groups with different disabilities wasanalysed as were potentially important moderating factors (workability, structural and individual factors). A secondary analy-sis was performed on 4359 respondents with disabilities fromStatistics Sweden's Labour Market Investigation. The respondentswere divided into six disability groups (communicative-hearing,communicative-speech-reading, communicative-vision, psycho-logical disability, medical disability, physical disability). Logisticregression analyses showed that the probability of being employedwas highest among respondents with hearing disabilities andrespondents with psychological disabilities were least likely tobe employed. Being a woman (very young or old) with onlyprimary education and with partially or very impaired workability, reduced employment opportunities. Higher education didnot increase employment opportunities for respondents withimpaired work ability. In summary, the type of disability is essentialfor employment opportunities, and differences between disabil-ity groups cannot be explained by differences in other variables.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine if there are any differences in work-related identity and work motivation depending on gender, age (employees) and type of employment (executive vs. employee) where three types of identity (professional identity, organizational identity and workgroup identity) and two types of motivation, inner and external motivation (inner=challenge and entertainment, external=compensation and recognition) were examined. The result showed significant differences in organizational identity and professional identity between executives and employees, where executives identified more with the organization and had a higher level of professional identity. Among the employees, there was a significant gender difference: men identified more with the organization and the work group than women.

Förväntningar på HR-funktionen ur chefernas perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how men perceive their male identity affects their coping with unhappiness in Sweden. The hypothesis was that men lack positive masculine role models. This study is qualitative in nature with discourse analysis. The study has used three theories as guidelines to the interview questions and as basis for the analysis. The theories used are, Hegemonic Masculinity Theory, The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping and Symbolic Interactionism.  The results of the study show that it is not clear whether men use particular coping strategies that relate to their masculinity. However, it indicates that they believe that being a man has an effect on which coping strategies they use.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the recruitment to the Islamic state as well as viewing possible reasons and motives for joining the Islamic state. Furthermore I also intended to examine the impact of the new amendment of the law concerning terrorist crimes. The study is based on seven semi-structured interviews with persons who work with this kind of questions. Social media is an important part of the radicalization and recruitment to the Islamic state. General motives for joining the Islamic state are for example alienation, social injustice or a search for identity. Nevertheless the process of radicalization and recruitment are individual and vary between different persons.

    Abstract [en]

In the Social Services Act in Sweden, it is stated that every child has the right to be given information and the opportunity to express its will and opinion. The child’s possibility to participate in the process of investigation should be considered with respect to the child´s age and maturity. By reasons of this we have chosen to examine how this is practiced in Swedish courts regarding eight cases where the out of home care of children according to 1 and 2 §§ in LVU is being judged. This has been done through a qualitative study with an attempt of using an argumentation analysis method. The main result of our study is that in the cases we studied the children had participated to a larger extent than described in previous research. Anyhow, when it comes to taking children’s, opinions in account, the cases we studied showed still great flaws and need of improvements. The conclusion of our study is that children's participation is a complex issue where more research is needed. Having this said, we believe that the subject of children’s participation must be more highlighted if a greater change is going to happen in the society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how social workers experience their possibility to meet children’s needs in the work with foster home placement. Five qualitative interviews have been held with social workers within the social services, whose work is related to foster care placements. The results show that social workers experience that they are not able to meet all children’s needs, and therefore they have to value what need is more important than other. Children’s voice and requests are being listened to but are not always being considered as important as the other needs. The result also shows that there is a great shortage of foster homes which makes social workers feel that they have to settle for a match that is “good enough” and hope that everything goes well. The desire to meet every child’s needs is there, but the possibility to do that is limited.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illustrate counselors’ experiences of working with individuals experiencing exhaustion disorder. Seven counselors working in primary health care were interviewed in a qualitative study. The results showed that the counselors’ experiences of causes to exhaustion disorder could be related to both external and internal factors. The increase of exhaustion disorder within society was ascribed to societal change and the demand to always be on top of things. To identify the patients’ needs questionnaires, diagnosis, alliance building and mapping were used. The method and approach used was determined by the patients’ needs, the counselors’ background, personal traits, organizational guidelines and evaluation of treatment results. Empowerment, CBT, mindfulness and cooperation with other professionals were described as useful counseling methods and approaches. Counselors described that the recovery for patients with exhaustion disorder takes time, and the routine of 8-10 meetings with the patient is often not enough.

    Abstract [en]

The study aimed to investigate reasons to work overtime among employees without overtime compensation in the staffing and recruitment industry depending on work demands, the place of work in one’s life, internal and external working motivation and harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The study was conducted as a digital survey sent to 16 companies. QPS Nordic measured work demands, the place of work in one’s life and internal and external working motivation. PTWS measured harmonious and obsessive passion toward work. The present study showed that work demands predicted overtime hours. No difference was observed in the other predictors. The conclusion of the study was that work demands made employees in the staffing and recruitment industry work overtime hours and that employers should pay attention to this regarding the health implications resulting from working overtime.

    Abstract [en]

This study explores how the Social Services work with the issue of adolescents using drugs or are at the beginning of a drug abuse and how the professionals view that work. This study is highly based on the real-life experience of professionals and them valuing the profession that they in. A qualitative research method was used to go into the depth of people's feelings and knowledge and therefore got us a better understanding. Semi-structured interviews with open questions was used to create a secure and comfortable place to open up for a good conversation. We have used two different theories,  Labelling Theory and Social Learning Theories in this study to help explain the findings from research and interviews. In the results and analysis, we found four interesting themes that were prominent during the interviews, these were: social exclusion, mental illness, Attitudes towards drugs and preventive work. The themes will be explained and further developed in the analysis which was done through an un-official method with influences such as coding and thematising from the content analysis method. The results of the study showed the importance, but unfortunate lack, of preventive work by the Social Services.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of home based care giver´s experiences of the encounter with clients from three perspectives: quality, time and power. We conducted a qualitative interview study with six people working in home based care. Our results have been analyzed and interpreted by the theories social constructionism and role theory and the concept of relational power. The results of the study demonstrate that time is central for the encounter between home care giver´s and clients affecting both when and how long the care should be performed. Responsiveness and putting the client´s needs in focus are defined as good quality of care, while the power relationship between home care givers and clients changes between each unique encounter. To get a deeper understanding and knowledge of home care givers experiences of the encounter with clients the three aspects: quality, time and power, needs to be highlighted and studied in the same context. The results demonstrate that the three aspects interact in the encounter and analyzing these together creates a deeper understanding of home care giver´s experience of the encounter.

    Abstract [en]

Through qualitative interviews with five employees in the Swedish correctional system and one trans-identified inmate, I sought to get an understanding of transgender inmates are dealt with in the Swedish correctional system. The aim of this study was to examine norms, values and practices expressed by the interview participants regarding transgender inmates. The interview participants expressed an awareness of the group’s vulnerable position in the prison environment, but also the lack of guidelines as well as structured methods to handle the group. Responses focused on the deviant and direct rather than the normative and preventive. The transgendered inmates themselves were responsible to explain their identity to others. At the same time there were no efforts to make the staff members aware of questions concerning gender identities and/or expressions. The Swedish correctional system can be said to maintain normative conceptions of two binary sexes by failing to provide action plans or natural options for persons with gender identities that extend beyond woman or man, or fluctuate between the two categories. To refuse to take a stand is to exercise power, make transgender inmates invisible, and perhaps even be seen as a violation in itself.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to map factors that affect care managers in the decision making process and how the interviewee approached these factors. To find an answer to our purpose we raised the following questions; what are the factors that affect care managers in the decision making process? And how do the care managers respond to these factors? To collect data we used a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. The study has been made with a phenomenological perspective which has given an ample insight to the world of care managers’ reality. Through this we have found the following factors that affect care managers discretion, commission, elderly that apply for care, relatives, and colleagues. We have also found several stories that alongside with chosen analytical tools such as social construction, doxa and street-level bureaucracy have given explanations to why care managers act upon different factors as they do.

The aim of this study was to investigate if high and low General Work-Related Identity (AI) had an effect on Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB). A total of 147 people within the public sector, across two organizations, responded to a questionnaire regarding identity and discretionary organizational behavior. The results showed significant effects of high and low AI, on OCB associated with four of the five sub-dimensions of OCB (altruism, conscientiousness, courtesy and civic virtue). Participants with high compared to low AI were shown to express higher levels of OCB (p < .01, η2= .16). In general, this indicates that organizations might increase the employees´ OCB by promoting their AI.

The purpose of the study was to exam if employee´s work motivation and work-related identity was affected by gender and level of education. The study was carried out by employee´s answering a questionnaire in an industrial company in Gävleborg. The instruments used in this study were Basic Need Satisfaction at Work Scale which measures work motivation (autonomy, competence, relatedness) and three work-related identity measurements; level of organizational-, professional- and peer identification. A total of 88 persons attended in the study. The result showed that there were significant differences in autonomy and competence related to level of education and in level of professional identification related to level of education. These results indicates that employee`s with high level of education perceived themselves to be more competent and independent in their works than employee`s with low level of education. Further the result showed that employee`s with high level of education experienced higher confidence to their profession than employee`s with low level of education. No significant differences existed for gender related to work motivation and work-related identity.

    Abstract [en]

Our identity is tied to where we are and how we engage with the landscapes in which we find ourselves. But what happens if the landscape which we use for our everyday life is drastically altered by a catastrophic upheaval, for example, when forest fires ravage the landscape? In this paper, interviews with individuals affected by the largest forest fire in modern Swedish history are used to exemplify our conceptualisation of how landscape identity is impacted by dramatic change. We address the phases of stability, change and progression in relation to the case. Finally, we propose that landscape identity can be utilised as a central concept for engaging with the social aspects of the impact of forest fires.

    Abstract [sv]

Participation in women’s groups: a mean to overcome oppression?: A Field Study made in urban Bolivia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor’s thesis is the result of a field study conducted in urban Bolivia. The aim of the study was to get a deeper understanding of the factors that can endorse or limit the potential for the women in a women’s group to influence social and economic agendas. It is a qualitative study that concerns the international social work with a women’s group, whose purpose seek to serve professional management in the production and selling of handicrafts. Participant observations in the women’s group, as well as interviews with two of the international social workers involved with the group were conducted. The results were analysed using a feminist theory perspective, with intersectionality theory as the main tool for analysis. The findings show that the access to income-generating activities can widen the elements of social identification for the women through active learning-processes, and further move towards an image where they become social actors. Concerns regarded if decision-making power were equally distributed among all women in the group.

    Abstract [en]

In this study I investigated whether the strength in the manual response for emotional and neutral stimulus search arrays can explain some of the difference in reaction times (RT:s) for emotional stimuli, or not. Earlier, perceptual, cognitive and attentional processes has mostly been used to explain the variance in RT:s. Thirtythree individuals were asked to, as fast as possible, detect a target picture among distractor pictures in 3 rows x 4 columns arranged search arrays. The pictures were categorized in fear relevant animals (snake, spider) and neutral animals (cat). The results showed, more correct responses for cat target. No correlation between strength and fear relevant target picture was found. This can partly be explained by that RT:s and force (Newton) was measured at different time sets with different buttons. The results show that the use of different response buttons results in a difference in the heartbeat frequency.

Adjustment of Somali women in relation to societal systems in the Swedish society: A qualitative case study of five Somali women’s experiences2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aims of this study are; (a) to explore how Somali women experience their adjustment in the Swedish society in connection to societal systems, and (b) to investigate these women’s perspective of how to make the adjustment process more effective in respect to their needs. The adjustment of the participants has been investigated through a social ecological theoretical framework. Thematic analysis has been utilised to present three themes; assistance, inclusion and self-sufficient which are discussed using social ecological theoretical perspective. Results showed that lack of assistance and sufficient information has led to these women feeling helpless and lost motivation to adjust. The women showed disappointment with regard to self-sufficiency which has not been what they have expected. The suggestions made by the interviewees included assistance in their native language during their first years in the new country, inclusive opening of meeting places and an increased assessment of personal resources when receiving help to find employment. Making adjustment more effective for newly arrived immigrants in new countries is fundamental to international social work.

    Abstract [en]

The population of Sweden tends to live longer and therefore a new agreement about the retirement age has been designed to maintain the Swedish economy. The retirement age will increase and to make older employees cope with a longer worklife it´s important to maintain a good work motivation and also give the employees the right conditions to be able to work longer. The purpose of this study was therefore to study what employees perceive as important to be able and willing to work longer. Nine semi-structured interviews were performed with employees over 60 years old and were professionals in different industries. The interviews were analysed with an inductive thematic analysis. Older employees are primarily motivated by intrinsic factors such as well-being at work and good relations with colleagues. Participation and development opportunities were important factors to be able to work longer. The opportunity for development at work can be affected by the conditions given to the employee, but the employee also has his own responsibility to take advantage of the development opportunities

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study is to find out what kind of help social service in one selected municipality in Sweden can provide for children who have witnessed or been victims of domestic violence. Using focus group interview this study investigate how the social workers meet the needs of these children. The bases for our analysis are the Organization Theory and the Attachment Theory, as well as previous research. Important results are that the social services are dependent on notifications in order to do their work and that the most common interventions are foster care, emergency foster care and/or family therapy. The difficulties that social workers perceive their work are unjustified families and heavy workloads. The results showed the difficulties of helping these children, and indicated that children who have witnessed domestic violence not always receive adequate response.

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to explore how 31 collage students' cognitive performance and their ability to create false memories were affected by the exposure of an extraneous background noise. The studies main hypotheses were based on previous research on how extraneous noise affect the cognitive ability and the creation of false memories: 1) that an extraneous background noise increases the ability to create false memories, 2) that an extraneous background noise impairs the learning of cognitive information, 3) that an extraneous background noise contributes to an increased representation of fictional words, 4) that an extraneous background noise impedes the ability to understand speech . The results showed a tendency in which false memories increased in the condition without background noise, a result which goes in the opposite direction of the hypothesis. Furthermore, the result supported the hypothesis that the extraneous background noise impairs the learning of cognitive information. The results also showed that there was no effect between the conditions regarding the representation of fictional information. However, the result confirmed the hypothesis that a background noise impedes the ability to understand speech. The authors believe that studies like this are of great importance to the debate about how noise in open plan offices affect people's performance and the appearance of error information.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how and in what contexts the Swedish social services are discussed online. To answer this purpose we have studied two Swedish Internet communities, and looked into what was written about social services during a year’s span. To get an overview of our results, we found thematic analysis useful to distinguish general themes. We found, inter alia, that the social services is most often mentioned in the contexts of factual questions or when trying to rally public opinion against the social services. We also found that it’s in the contexts of economy, children, and alcohol and drugs that social services are present in Internet communities. The examined online discourse on Swedish social services was mostly objective and factual, and free from value statements, though often negative. The negative descriptions of the social services often refer to the position of power that the social services possess. It is far less frequent for the social services be described in a positive light.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The aim of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of social workers’ perception and experience of encountering and working with self-injurious behaviors among adolescents. A qualitative methodology was used where three semi-structured interviews with counselors employed at youth health centers were conducted. The analysis was carried out through three different themes where the researcher explored in the counsellors’ views on underlying causes, their professional experience and how they worked with the self-injuring problematic. The findings identified self-injury as symptoms of other underlying problems, the close coupling between work experiences and adapting an accepting view of the phenomenon, and the challenges the counsellors’ experience when working with these adolescents. Further findings identified counsellors’ understanding of the relationship between self-injury and suicidality as rather complex.

Right to a Normal Life: The progress of changing attitudes towards people with mental disabilities in Tanzania2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research on mental disability in the Sub-Sahara African context has recently stagnated, and is in need of a revival. The objectives of this study was to examine (i) the current situation of children and youth with mental disabilities in the Morogoro Region, Tanzania, and (ii) how to create more community awareness on rights of people with mental disabilities in the society, to put the discussion of mental disabilities back on the agenda. To fully grasp the cultural context, we have used interviews with local professionals working with children and youth with mental disabilities, in order to gain knowledge of efficient ways to create more community awareness. Over time there has been a change of attitudes due to improved knowledge, mainly through the increased visibility of people with mental disabilities in the society.
