Experimental investigation of near-field stream-wise flow development and spatial structure in triple buoyant plumes2019Inngår i: Building and Environment, ISSN 0360-1323, E-ISSN 1873-684X, Vol. 149, s. 79-89Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a systematic experimental study on stream-wise flow development and spatial structure of triple buoyant plumes. Two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (2-D PIV) is employed to resolve velocity fields. Stream-wise axial velocity profiles, flow structure, flow region parameters, and self-similarity properties are analyzed at different configurations that are characterized by spacing ratios S/W (source spacing S divided by source width W). From velocity fields and axial velocity profiles, a similar stream-wise developing trend is identified in different source configurations. When near-field plumes travel downstream, axial velocities increase rapidly, off-center velocity peaks get merged with the central peak, and the number of velocity peaks reduces with the downstream distance. A compact source layout, comparing with the wide one, could enhance the near-field plumes interaction and promote the plumes deflection significantly. Fundamentally, the stream-wise spatial structure of the triple plumes initially consists of a converging region, followed by a merging region, and finally a combined region. By examining the averaged velocity fields, flow recirculation with negative axial velocities is found to scarcely exist in the converging region. Merging level Zm and quasi-combined level Zqc are analyzed quantitatively and statistically. Within the studied S/W range, the normalized Zm shows a linear increase with S/W in the formula of Zm/H=2.007(S/W)+1.173 and the normalized Zqc gives a power law increase with S/W in the formula of Zqc/H=6.035(S/W)0.4959. In addition, triple plumes are found to establish self-similarity approximately at Z = 3H with S/W of 0.2 and at Z = 4.5H with S/W of 0.5.

Unsteady large-scale flow patterns and dynamic vortex movement in near-field triple buoyant plumes2018Inngår i: Building and Environment, ISSN 0360-1323, E-ISSN 1873-684X, Vol. 142, s. 288-300Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Unsteady flow patterns of interacting buoyant plumes are important for buoyant ventilation and particularly influence pollutant and heat transports in indoor and outdoor environments. This study reveals fundamental large-scale flow patterns in triple building plumes, investigates vortex moving trends during the pattern transition processes, and explores possible mechanisms of pattern diversity by two-dimensional (2-D) Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Total five tests are studied, including three different heat strengths Q (180, 90, and 30 W) and three source layouts characterized by the ratios of source spacing S to source width W (0.2, 0.5, and 1.0). Streamline distributions and axial velocity profiles clearly reveal three fundamental global flow patterns: a right-slanting asymmetrical flow pattern, a left-slanting asymmetrical flow pattern, and an axisymmetric flow pattern. Correspondingly, it indicates four basic transition processes, i.e., right-to-center, left-to-center, center-to-right, and center-to-left transitions (“center” represents the axisymmetric pattern). A novel vortex tracking method, based on lambda-2 (λ2) criterion and principles of the PIV technique, is developed and successfully applied to qualitatively track the vortex moving trends during the transition processes. The regular vortex moving trends are found to be reasonably consistent with the global pattern transition trends. The flow pattern diversity is speculated to be mainly driven by unstable heat source wall flows and downstream swaying motions in this study. These critical unstable motions are considered to probably relate to unstable lateral entrainment and vortex interaction, particularly beside the central plume. Consistently, the regular vortex moving trends are usually observed in and around the central plume.

The effect of building spacing on near-field temporal evolution of triple building plumes2017Inngår i: Building and Environment, ISSN 0360-1323, E-ISSN 1873-684X, Vol. 122, s. 35-49Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Building plume is important for ventilation and pollutants dispersion along and above buildings in an urban canopy layer. This study fundamentally explores the merging process and temporal penetration of triple uniformly distributed starting building plumes, with a focus of the spacing effect on near-field flow dynamics. Instantaneous velocity and vorticity distributions, penetrating velocities, and stream-wise penetrated heights are quantitatively examined using 2-D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements at spacing ratios S/W (building spacing/building width) of 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0. We identified a four-stage merging progress and captured three main spacing-induced merging features. A compact layout at S/W = 0.2 introduces a strong upward channel flow. The wall flows beside the channel tend to draw together first and the unstable channel flow determines the flow pattern transition. In contrast, wider layouts at S/W = 0.5 and 1.0 exhibit intensive downward flow. The wall flows tend to exhibit self-merging initially and the downstream natural swaying motion dominates the merged pattern variations. Merging effect and buoyancy force jointly determine the temporal penetrating velocities. Temporal series of maximum axial velocities above the middle source fits into a power law profile at S/W = 0.2 but a linear function of time at S/W = 0.5 and 1.0. The normalized penetrated heights at S/W = 1.0 are notably faster than in the other two cases before the normalized time is at 3.00 probably because the weaker entrainment and interaction with neighbors lead to less energy and momentum dissipation, quicker self-merging, and faster penetration.

Near-field merging and penetration of triple starting plumes from volumetric heat sources in a calm environment2017Inngår i: International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, ISSN 0017-9310, E-ISSN 1879-2189, Vol. 115, nr Part B, s. 1321-1333Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the buoyancy effect on near-field evolution of triple equal starting thermal plumes from volumetric heat sources, with a focus on merging process, velocity evolution, and stream-wise penetration. Instantaneous velocity fields and corresponding vorticity distribution, temporal evolution of centerline axial velocities, temporal penetrating rates and heights are examined by 2-D particle image velocimetry (PIV) at three different source heat strengths of 180 W, 90 W, and 30 W. A four-stage merging process is demonstrated to be independent of heat strength. Normalized starting and terminating times of each developing stage are also unified regardless of the heat strength, i.e., t/t∗ = 1.7–2.5 for stage i (relatively isolated development), t/t∗ = 2.5–3.3 for stage ii (bending wall flows), t/t∗ = 3.3–3.9 for stage iii (development after a self-merged state), and t/t∗ > 3.9 for stage iv (evolution with global merging). The axial velocity at a specific centerline point usually involves three distinct developing periods: a “centerline-silent” period ending at a normalized transportation time tt_n when heat is just transported to the measuring points, a fast rising period, and a fluctuating period starting at a normalized endurance time te_n. The buoyancy-independent tt_n is approximately 1.5, 2.2, 3.0, and 3.2 at a normalized downstream distance of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5, respectively. The time te_n, independent of buoyancy and axial height, is about 3.6 for all measuring points in this study. The maximum axial velocity above the middle heat source exhibits three linearly developing periods with different acceleration rates successively: a quicker rate as the wall flow develops, a slower rate due to enhanced lateral interaction, and the fastest rate as the global merging happens. In different periods, the proportional coefficients of linear fitted functions vary from 0.48 to 2.98. The downstream distance where axial velocity is maximum shows similar power-law increasing during t/t∗ = 1.5–3.2 at Q = 180 and 90 W, but exhibits significant fluctuations at Q = 30 W. Normalized overall penetration based on global velocity fields is notably faster and higher at the lowest buoyancy (Q = 30 W) than that at the higher buoyancy (Q = 180 and 90 W), probably due to the weaker lateral interaction and turbulent mixing together with the more dedicated vertical rise at Q = 30 W.

Energy analysis for a snow-free surface: A technical analysis of the benefits of insulation under the heating pipes2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Snow-free surfaces is needed for parking place, platform, and playground and even in city center square. With energy prices rising, energy saving is becoming a hot topic. Meanwhile environmental problems are becoming more and more serious, thus, the ways to saving energy is becoming an eye-catcher. So burring heating pipes underground has been a popular way to get ice-free surfaces. Using heating pipes for melting snow is much more efficient and more benefit for the environment comparing with using other methods.

In this project, an energy analysis of a football pitch with an area of 5000 m2 is carried out under a series of conditions between insulated and uninsulated construction. All calculations are done with the so-called finite element method (FEM), in the COMSOL. COMSOL is used for simulating and calculating the energy use with outdoor temperatures of -5 ºC and -10 ºC. Top layer materials concrete, grass and stone are also discussed. The ability of XPS and EPS insulation material is compared and noted. The models are divided into two parts, one is with snowfall and the other is without snowfall.

The results in the report shows that adding insulation under the heating pipe has significant energy saving potential. The surface with concrete layer has the best insulated ability, which can prevent more heat losses. The EPS insulated construction has a better performance in keeping more heat in the soil.

    Abstract [sv]

    Copula-based reliability analysis for a parallel system with a cold standby2018Inngår i: Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, ISSN 0361-0926, E-ISSN 1532-415X, Vol. 47, nr 3, s. 562-582Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The traditional reliability models cannot well reflect the effect of performance dependence of subsystems on the reliability of system, and neglect the problems of initial reliability and standby redundancy. In this paper, the reliability of a parallel system with active multicomponents and a single cold-standby unit has been investigated. The simultaneously working components are dependent and the dependence is expressed by a copula function. Based on the theories of conditional probability, the explicit expressions for the reliability and the MTTF of the system, in terms of the copula function and marginal lifetime distributions, are obtained. Let the copula function be the FGM copula and the marginal lifetime distribution be exponential distribution, a system with two parallel dependent units and a single cold-standby unit is taken as an example. The effect of different degrees of dependence among components on system reliability is analyzed, and the system reliability can be expressed as the linear combination of exponential reliability functions with different failure rates. For investigating how the degree of dependence affects the mean lifetime, furthermore, the parallel system with a single cold standby, comprising different number of active components, is also presented. The effectiveness of the modeling method is verified, and the method presented provides a theoretical basis for reliability design of engineering systems and physics of failure.

Studie om produktutveckling i praktiken2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

An interview study about domestic violence and the treatment of the perpetrator

The purpose of this study was to investigate the treatments available to perpetrators of domestic violence. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four people who all work with perpetrators of domestic violence in some way. The result has been analyzed with the help of attachment theory, behaviorism, violence - dominance and masculinity. The results show that there are various forms of treatment for the perpetrators. According to the interviewees there is no follow-up on whether the efforts help. The interviewees also described that these treatments are all individually adapted to the perpetrator's needs and that there is a resistance among the perpetrators to be included in group treatments. In addition, the treatments were described as often related to volunteerism under some constraint. The lack of attachment and the complexity of the treatment are discussed.

Implementation of a Function Generator2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Function generator has been widely used in each electronics fields recent years. In this thesis, the authors will introduce some basic structure and working principles of a function generator, moreover a function generator which can create three kinds of wave: sine wave, square wave and triangle wave has been implemented. There are many ways to build the function generator; a method of combine the operational amplifier and discrete components is introduced in this thesis. First use the RC Wien bridge oscillator to achieve sinusoidal wave; and convert it into square wave by using the shaping circuit. Lastly, use the integrating circuit to obtain triangle wave. The basic simulation software Multisim has been used to simulate the circuit.

The Impact of Service Recovery on Customer Loyalty (Case company: Swedbank)2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

     Abstract

Purpose - Purpose of given study is to analyse the impact of service recovery measures on customer loyalty by considering a Case company Swedbank. Both primary and secondary data have been collected for this paper. In primary data interviews and questionnaires are used. Different theories about customer loyalty and service recovery are discussed in secondary data. Both qualitative and quantitative data are used. Multiple regression analysis is used to analyse the data and give conclusion.

Conclusion - Conclusion shows that service recovery measure can impact customer loyalty. It is also concluded that prompt response, Material compensation and politeness of employees play important role in service recovery measures and influence customer loyalty.

Methodology - New articles have been used in the paper, however the old articles that have high contribution in the body of knowledge are not be discounted also. Our methodology for the process is unique in which multiple regression method is used and components of Customer loyalty, word of mouth and repurchase intention are analysed on basis of independent variables. Methodology and literature can help the researchers who want to further explore this area.

Practical implication - Theories discussed in the thesis can be used as basis to develop the strategies in services; these strategies can consider the service recovery measures discussed in this paper and it can also help Swedbank to know the importance of service recovery process in customer loyalty.

Limitation - Few limitations of this paper are; customer loyalty is the objective of this paper, not Customer satisfaction. Service recovery may result in customer satisfaction not in customer loyalty. Moreover only two components of loyalty have been examined, word of mouth and repurchase intention. The attitudinal component of customer loyalty can appear in more forms than only word of mouth. Moreover this thesis is not considering customers who have problems but they did not communicate to the bank, or they just exit or they are still with bank and having negative word of mouth, but they never communicate to the bank.

Optimization of Antenna Pair for Diversity Gain2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In the latest development in the field of telecommunications it has been observed that a lot is expected from the mobile systems. All kinds of communication standards such as Bluetooth, 3G, W-LAN etc. should be present in the same handset. This requires higher data transmission rates and low bit error probability. One of the major problems in achieving this is fading and multi path environment. The other problem is the growing trend of decreasing size of the electronic devices specially handsets. The handsets are getting smaller and thinner. Due to this the antennas in the device come very close to each other which causes high coupling between the antennas resulting in bad diversity gain. Antenna diversity is considered to be one of easier solution to overcome these problems. This thesis presents an implementation of receiver antenna diversity and suggests different optimised networks between the antenna ports for better diversity gain keeping in view the antenna efficiencies. The thesis involves the following steps: simulating the structures, suggesting different networks between the two antenna ports, optimisation and hardware implementation of the networks and finally measurements in reverberation chamber.

Fastighetsekonomers motivation i yrkesliv och utbildning2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Titel: Fastighetsekonomers motivation i yrkesliv och utbildning

    Nivå: C-uppsats inom ämnet företagsekonomi

Författare: Mahtab Yousefi & Tony Esso

    Handledare: Jonas Kågström

    Datum: 2011 - 06

    Abstract [sv]

Disturbing Sound Cancellation2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

When doing recording work in the studio, disturbing sound must be removed. In this thesis, the purpose of this thesis is to formulate a mathematical equation, by using MATLAB to identify a system, then using the system to do cancellation of disturbing sound. The method of doing cancellation is to subtract the simulated output by the actual output, and then the disturbing sound was cancelled. The main thesis work will focus on the system identification, which is the process of determining the characteristic of an unknown system. Three systems were identified with the same model structure, which is linear (ARX) model. After finding out the model, the model quality must be evaluated. If the model is valid, there is a discussion if it is possible to run the mathematical equation in the real application, and how is the market today.

Estimating the frequency response of a receiver: Blind identification2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 poäng / 120 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Consider a receiver that has an unknown impulse response in the form of linear time-invariant system, which is driven by an input signal and random noise with an unknown distribution. If the unknown impulse response of the receiver could be identified, then its equivalent frequency response can be used for calibration, using deconvolution aiming to regain the original signal under measurement. Hence, the estimation of the transfer function of the receiver is of great importance from both theoretical and practical applications. This thesis is devoted to the identification of the receiver’s unknown finite impulse response (FIR form), by observing only the output signal through it. More specifically, not only the amplitude and phase but also the orders of the finite impulse response of the receiver are unknown. A blind algorithm is tested for the identification of the unknown communication channel of the receiver in simulation. Further, in a practical implementation performed in this thesis such blind algorithm is combined with a technique to compute the receiver’s transfer functions. The word blind indicates that there is no restriction in the input signal set, it is allowed to be non-stationary with unknown statistical model, and hence this algorithm is particularly suitable for de-reverberation technology. The implementation of the blind algorithm is demonstrated through the Matlab simulation, and verified through experimental measurements, where several of the impairments of hardware will be considered in the analysis.

Evidence for myofibril remodeling as opposed to myofibril damage in human muscles with DOMS: an ultrastructural and immunoelectron microscopic study.2004Inngår i: Histochemistry and Cell Biology, ISSN 0948-6143, E-ISSN 1432-119X, Vol. 121, nr 3, s. 219-227Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The myofibrillar and cytoskeletal alterations observed in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) caused by eccentric exercise are generally considered to represent damage. By contrast our recent immunohistochemical studies suggested that the alterations reflect myofibrillar remodeling (Yu and Thornell 2002; Yu et al. 2003). In the present study the same human muscle biopsies were further analyzed with transmission electron microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy. We show that the ultrastructural hallmarks of DOMS, Z-disc streaming, Z-disc smearing, and Z-disc disruption were present in the biopsies and were significantly more frequent in biopsies taken 2-3 days and 7-8 days after exercise than in those from controls and 1 h after exercise. Four main types of changes were observed: amorphous widened Z-discs, amorphous sarcomeres, double Z-discs, and supernumerary sarcomeres. We confirm by immunoelectron microscopy that the main Z-disc protein alpha-actinin is not present in Z-disc alterations or in the links of electron-dense material between Z-discs in longitudinal register. These alterations were related to an increase of F-actin and desmin, where F-actin was present within the strands of amorphous material. Desmin, on the other hand, was seen in less dense regions of the alterations. Our results strongly support that the myofibrillar and cytoskeletal alterations, considered to be the hallmarks of DOMS, reflect an adaptive remodeling of the myofibrils

Impact of critical value chain activities on product performances in process industry: a case study of Korsnäs AB2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Problem:

What are the most critical activities for process industry? Whether general view of impact of these value chain activities on product performance (quality, cost and innovation) applied to process industry? How do those activities impact to product performances? If they cannot affect product performance, what could be the reason behind it?

    Purpose:

This paper aims to conclude general view of impact of value chain activities on product performances (quality, cost and innovation). Accordingly we would create a conceptual model. And then test whether this model applies for process industry and further more figure out the reason behind through case study.

    Methodology:

In this paper, qualitative research is our approach. We choose single case study as research strategy and conduct three interviews. Documentation and interview data are collected and analyzed to provide theoretical framework and empirical evidence for the whole paper.

    Result:

Based on case study, and previous work, the model concerning impact of major activities for process industry (Marketing sales, Human Resource and Supplier management) on product performances (Quality, Cost and Innovation) is derived. This model contains answers to nine hypotheses assumed in theoretical part, giving reader a new and easy way to understand process industry.

    Conclusions:

Distinguished from other industry, process industry with its own unique characteristics does not lend support to all nine hypotheses. Fundamental analysis proved that some assumptions do not establish for process industry while the others may have more significant relationships. To be specific, there exists strong impact of human resource on product quality and cost, supplier management on product cost and also marketing and sales on product quality. But, to our surprise, the other assumed relationships are not that significant while product innovation has adverse affect on marketing and sales.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to build and then optimize a simulation environment for the GSM / EDGE / WCDMA receiver in the RF Asics.

The system generally consists of two blocks: an Agilent Advanced Design System (ADS) controlled system core and Simulation Environment System for Verification and Design (SEVED). The signal is generated by SEVED and directed into the system core, where the receiver under test is located. Signal output of the receiver is then directed back into SEVED for bit error rate calculations. Therefore the performance of the receiver can be evaluated.

Variation of Force Amplitude and its Effects on Local Fatigue2012Inngår i: European Journal of Applied Physiology, ISSN 1439-6319, E-ISSN 1439-6327, Vol. 112, nr 11, s. 3865-3879Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Trends in industry are leaning towards stereotyped jobs with low workloads. Physical variation is an intervention to reduce fatigue and potentially musculoskeletal disorders in such jobs. Controlled laboratory studies have provided insight into the effectiveness of physical variation but very few have been devoted to intermittent activity without muscular rest as a component. This study was undertaken to determine whether the inclusion of muscular rest would result in physiological responses beyond those composed of varying non-zero forces. Five isometric contraction patterns with the same mean amplitude (15% maximum voluntary contraction, MVC), cycle time (6 seconds), and duty cycle (50%) were compared using multiple biophysical approaches. In exercise, sustained (15%Sust) and intermittent contractions including zero force (0%-30%Int) differed significantly in 19 of 27 response variables. Contractions varying by half the mean force (7.5%-22.5%Int) led to 8 and 7 measured responses that were significantly different from 0%-30%Int and 15%Sus, respectively. A sinusoidal condition (0%-30%Sine) resulted in 2 variables that were significantly different from 0%-30%Int and 16 different from 15%Sus. Finally, 10 response variables suggested that varying forces with 1% as the lower contraction level was significantly less fatiguing than 15%Sus while no responses were significantly different from 0%-30%Int. Sustained contractions led to decreased twitch force 24 hours post-exercise whereas intermittent contractions recovered within 60 minutes. This suggests that time varying force may be a useful intervention to reduce local fatigue in workers performing low-load tasks and that rest per se did not seem to cause any extraordinary effects.

Strategy Development of SMEs in the Internet of Things era: Case Study on Chinese Enterprises2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Internet of Things (IOT) has become the key theme of the world since 2009 and been considered as the third wave in the information industry after the waves of Computer, Internet and Mobile Radio Communication. It is expected to have a strong influence on small and medium companies (SMEs). However, little research on what and how the influence of IOT on the SME’s development can be found in the literature. The purpose of the thesis is to examine how IOT influences the organizational changes in SMEs. Finally, suggestions for strategy developments will be proposed to assist the SMEs in making their organization changes successfully. Two main models are applied for this part: change model (OD model) and business model. Moreover, the SWOT theory is adopted to identify the SMEs position in IOT era. We collect the primary data through launching the survey on internet. After data documentation, we apply “Approximation of the Probability Hypothesis Testing” Method to conduct data analysis. After researching, we found out the IOT brings “revolution” change to the Logistics of SMEs while only “adapting” change for Manufactures’ business development. Compare to logistic industry, the manufacturing SMEs seldom adopts IT technologies for their selling channel because they are lacking of resources and knowledge for the new technologies. We suggest the logistic SMEs should establish logistic network between the logistic companies to enhance information and resource integration. For the manufacturing SMEs should apply knowledge management and change the companies into learning organizations. In future, IOT will bring radical changes for manufacturers, which are the biggest area with application of IOT technology. Nevertheless, the logistics industry might go out of fashion. In other words, logistics industry may die out or change to other functions.

Energy-efficient industrial dryers of berries2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Saving energy is considered about by much more people nowadays. The energy use of industrial drying occupies a large part of total energy usage. Not only the governments, but also the industry owners are trying to find ways to cut down the usage of energy. The aim of this work is to find suitable technologies for industrial drying of berries which can be energy-efficient at the same time. More specifically, to find suitable dryers for drying aronia berry in Sweden. The research is based on secondary data collected by literature review. Good options for other circumstances like fluidized bed drying, freeze drying and solar drying were not discussed in detail. After the study, a continuous hot air dryer with explosion puffing system and heat pumping system seems to be the best solution for drying aronia berry in Sweden. It is easy to be controlled, cost acceptable (both capital and operational costs), environmental friendly and has high drying rate and high product quality. The extra means for improve drying process such as combined with dielectric or conductive dryer, adding pre-treatment such as osmotic drying were also discussed. Combined dryers can reduce the drying time and osmotic drying can cut the operation cost. Careful experiments shall be done before large amount of investment due to the complexity of dehydration.

Fusion energy: Critical analysis of the status and future prospects2018Student paper second term, 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The need to make maximum use of renewable resources to the detriment of fossil fuels to achieve environmental goals with an increasing energy demand is driving research into the development of technologies to obtain energy from sources that are not currently being exploited, one of them being fusion energy. The aim of this report is to provide a general overview of fusion and to provide a critical opinion on whether fusion will become a commercial energy source in the future, and if so when. The followed methodology has been a literature review complemented by an interview to B Henric M Bergsåker, teacher and researcher at the KTH on fusion plasma physics and information person for the Swedish fusion research. In the results section the fusion physics and different technological approaches have been presented. Among the studied different projects, the ITER Tokamak magnetic reactor has been selected as the most promising of these projects, as a product of international collaboration, and it has been analyzed in more detail. The obtained results have been that fusion can be an inexhaustible, environmentally friendly and safe energy source. The first-generation fusion commercial reactors are expected to be part of the energy mix before 2100.

Measurements and simulations of the performance of the PV systems at the University of Gävle2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In the following years, the countries will have to face an increase in the energy demand. So far, the fossil fuels have been the main source to meet the energy demand, but they involve serious problems: they contribute to the climate change with high emissions of greenhouse gases, there is an uneven distribution of these resources and their reserves are finite. The renewable energies are the most reliable alternative, with a very low environmental impact in comparison. Among them, the photovoltaics seems to be the most promising emerging technology for the electricity generation. Its rapid growth in the last years has been due to the reduction achieved in the cost of the PV panels. When planning a PV installation, it is essential to be able to estimate the production. The power of a PV-module is given by the manufacturer at standard conditions (STC), which means that the irradiance is G=1000W/m2 at normal incidence and the temperature of the module is 25˚C. However, these conditions will never be reached in a real installation. Therefore, the measured power of the system has to be adjusted for the real conditions so that the real production and performance can be estimated. Today there exists no standard method for this procedure in Sweden. The main aim of this thesis is to develop a theoretical model for the four PV-systems installed at the laboratories (building 45) of the University of Gävle to estimate the performance and production, and prove its validity by comparing with real data measured with a short time resolution (second). This will also allow to know if the power generated by the modules is the promised one by the providers. Three of the studied systems have monocrystalline silicon modules, with different schemes: one system with bypass diodes, another with TIGO optimizers, and the third one with microinverters. The fourth system has thin film modules. The theoretical model considers correction factors for the cell temperature, the angle of incidence and the real irradiation reaching the modules’ surface; as all these aspects reduce the power obtained. When studying this model for clear sunny days, it can be observed that the theoretical model adjusts perfectly for the four systems in these conditions and almost a completely linear dependence is achieved between the measured and estimated power. The worse adjustment is obtained for the thin film system, for which the theoretical model gives lower values than the real ones. However, a better approximation can be obtained for this system by adjusting the value of the correction factor for the cell temperature. Moreover, the high values obtained for the maximum power during the clear days, very close to the peak power, indicates that the maximum power value provided by the manufacturers is in concordance with the real performance of the modules. In case of cloudy days, a small-time delay has been appreciated between the data recorded by both logger. The results have been studied with the raw data, obtained worse adjusting, and correcting this time discordance, getting again accurate results from the theoretical model.

Symptoms of depression, anxiety, and somatization in female victims and perpetrators of intimate partner violence in Maputo City, Mozambique2012Inngår i: International Journal of Women's Health, ISSN 1179-1411, E-ISSN 1179-1411, Vol. 4, s. 491-503Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Little knowledge exists in Mozambique and sub-Saharan Africa about the mental health (symptoms of depression, anxiety, and somatization) of women victims and perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) by type of abuse (psychological aggression, physical assault without/with injury, and sexual coercion). This study scrutinizes factors associated with mental health among women victims and perpetrators of IPV over the 12 months prior to the study.

Methods and materials: Mental health data were analyzed with bivariate and multiple regression methods for 1442 women aged 15–49 years who contacted Forensic Services at Maputo Central Hospital (Maputo City, Mozambique) for IPV victimization between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008.

Results: In bivariate analyses, victims and perpetrators of IPVs scored higher on symptoms of mental health than their unaffected counterparts. Multiple regressions revealed that controlling behaviors, mental health comorbidity, social support, smoking, childhood abuse, sleep difficulties, age, and lack of education were more important in explaining symptoms of mental health than demographics/socioeconomics or life-style factors. Victimization and perpetration across all types of IPV were not associated with symptoms of mental health.

Conclusion: In our sample, victimization and perpetration were not important factors in explaining mental ill health, contrary to previous findings. More research into the relationship between women’s IPV victimization and perpetration and mental health is warranted as well as the influence of controlling behaviors on mental health.

Intimate partner violence against women in Maputo city, Mozambique2012Inngår i: BMC International Health and Human Rights, ISSN 1472-698X, E-ISSN 1472-698X, Vol. 12, nr 1, artikkel-id 35Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

There is limited research about IPV against women and associated factors in Sub-Saharan Africa, not least Mozambique. The objective of this study was to examine the occurrence, severity, chronicity and "predictors" of IPV against women in Maputo City (Mozambique).

    Methods

Data were collected during a 12 month-period (consecutive cases, with each woman seen only once) from 1,442 women aged 15--49 years old seeking help for abuse by an intimate partner at the Forensic Services at the Maputo Central Hospital, Maputo City, Mozambique. Interviews were conducted by trained female interviewers, and data collected included demographics and lifestyle variables, violence (using the previously validated Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2), and control (using the Controlling Behaviour Scale Revised (CBS-R). The data were analysed using bivariate and multivariate methods.

    Results

The overall experienced IPV during the past 12 months across severity (one or more types, minor and severe) was 70.2% (chronicity, 85.8 +/- 120.9).a Severe IPV varied between 26.3-45.9% and chronicity between 3.1 +/- 9.1-12.8 +/- 26.9, depending on IPV type. Severity and chronicity figures were higher in psychological aggression than in the other IPV types. Further, 26.8% (chronicity, 55.3 +/- 117.6) of women experienced all IPV types across severity. The experience of other composite IPV types across severity (4 combinations of 3 types of IPV) varied between 27.1-42.6% and chronicity between 35.7 +/- 80.3-64.9 +/- 110.9, depending on the type of combination. The combination psychological aggression, physical assault and sexual coercion had the highest figures compared with the other combinations.. The multiple regressions showed that controlling behaviours, own perpetration and co-occurring victimization were more important in "explaining" the experience of IPV than other variables (e.g. abuse as a child).

    Conclusions

In our study, controlling behaviours over/by partner, own perpetration, co-occurring victimization and childhood abuse were more important factors in "explaining" sustained IPV. More investigation into women's IPV exposure and its "predictors" is warranted in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Mozambique.

    Abstract [sv]

Changing the Game:  a Pre-Study to Marketing Planning in a Local Squash Club; MBA-thesis in marketing2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Aim:

The purpose was to perform a pre-study to marketing planning for a local squash club in Sweden that had difficulties with membership growth and development. This pre-study would provide the squash club with valuable information and a starting point when creating its first marketing plan.

    Method:

The chosen research approach included theoretical and empirical studies. Empirical data was collected by triangulation, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. A semi-structured interview and two surveys using on-line questionnaires were conducted, analyzed and presented. The discussed theory including key definitions, models and concepts was related to the empirical data findings and reflected on.

    Results & Conclusions:

A small non-profit squash club with scarce resources and slim organization has to implement a customer centered mindset and work smarter instead of harder. It is important for the club to carefully match market opportunities with its objectives and capabilities.Engaging in marketing planning and the development of a marketing plan will enable the club to find new creative ways to offer a unique squash experience that will result in a positive membership development.

    Recommendations:

The squash club should strive to develop key strategic partnerships that can compliment its strengths and help reduce its weaknesses. An own club website would improve internal and external communication significantly and decrease the club management’s administrative workload. It would be advisable for the club to perform annual online customer satisfaction surveys to monitor and measure own performance and detect key changes in the marketplace.

    Contribution:

This pre-study could be a good opportunity for the squash club’s management team to engage in marketing planning and develop its first marketing plan. Perhaps this study could also benefit other small sports clubs with similar challenges and give them ideas and new tools for future development, such as using on-line surveys.

    Suggested future research:

It would be interesting to perform a comparison among the four racket sports: tennis, badminton, table-tennis and squash and the reasons behind young people choosing to play one sport over the others. The result would help racket clubs to better understand how they should position themselves in the market place to attract young people to their particular sport.

Impaired positioning of the gape in whiplash-associated disorders2006Inngår i: Swedish Dental Journal, ISSN 0347-9994, Vol. 30, nr 1, s. 9-15Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We have previously introduced anew concept for natural jaw function suggesting that "functional jaw movements" are the result of coordinated jaw and neck muscle activation, leading to simultaneous movements in the temporomandibular, atlanto-occipital and cervical spine joints. Thus, jaw function requires a healthy state of both the jaw and the neck motor systems. The aim of this study was to examine the positioning of the gape in space during maximal jaw opening at fast and slow speed in healthy as well as whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) individuals. A wireless optoelectronic technique for three-dimensional movement recording was used. Subjects were seated in an upright position, with back support up to the mid-scapular level without headrest. The position of the gape in space was defined as the vertical midpoint position of the gape at maximal jaw opening (MP). In healthy, the MP generally coincided with the reference position at the start of jaw opening. In the WAD group, the MID was significantly lower than the reference position. No sex or speed related differences were found. The results suggest that both the width and orientation of the gape in space relies on coordinated jaw and neck muscle activation and mandibular and head-neck movements. This study also suggests an association between neck pain and dysfunction following trauma, and reduced width and impaired positioning of the gape in space. Finally, the MP seems to be a useful marker in evaluation of the functional state of the jaw-neck motor system.
