Sociala mediers kraft: gymnasietjejers reflektioner kring Facebook och Instagrams betydelse för deras självkänsla och psykiska välbefinnande2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social media has increased significantly in recent years and become a part of many people's lives. As social media progresses, questions about its impact on people's well being are highlighted. The aim of this study was to examine how young girls reflect on social media's impact on their self-esteem and well-being. Two focus group interviews were conducted. A qualitative content analysis was created from the collected material, where we with the help of social constructivism and symbolic interactionism analyzed the collected empirical data. The results showed that the interviewees regarded social media as having an impact on high school girls' self-esteem and well-being. This was shown in particular by the importance of "likes". In the discussion section we discuss the results that are connected to the previous research.

De osynliga barnen: En kvalitativ studie om hur ett barnperspektiv tillämpas i vuxenpsykiatrisk verksamhet.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how our selected municipalityaddressed theirpreventive work regarding threat and violence among social workers, what strategies social workers have to overcome intimidating situations, and also what level of education social workers have. Previous research shows that education for social workers inthis topicoften is neglected. The study was conducted by one focus group interview with social workersall working inchild and familywelfarein our selected municipality. The main result of the study is that social workers experience that the municipalitysinternal agenda against threat and violence works well and gives support in their work. Despite this, the social workers expressed a desire to get morerelevant education about threats and violence to be able toavoid risk-taking behavior and be able to perform a more secure job. According to the social workers some of the strategies that affected the safety in their profession was the possibilityto have a direct and clear communication with the client to try and make the meeting between client and social workers more relaxed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to create an increased knowledge and understanding of young adults’ experiences from growing up as a child in a family with alcohol abuse, as well as studying long-term consequences of this. In the study five qualitative interviews were conducted, with young adults who grew up with a parent who abused alcohol. The results of the study were analyzed by Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecological model, as well as by the theoretical concepts risk, protective factors and resilience. Results and conclusions showed, that all informants experienced negative consequences during childhood and in adult life, due to the parent’s abuse. The families of the informants were characterized by an abnormal use of alcohol during their childhood, which led to a high level of conflict, lack of relationships, a major responsibility at home for the informants, negative health effects and school difficulties. The young adults stated, that they are living a good life today, but that childhood has made its mark in their minds. The informants narrated experienced health problems, difficulties with feeling trust and expressing how they feel as well as a lack of relation to the parent with addiction.

"Det blev skillnad på människor": En kvalitativ studie om socialarbetares förhållningssätt till samhälleliga föreställningar om kön, klass, etnicitet och sexualitet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how social workers relate to societal notions of gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality in meetings with clients. As the basis of the study, qualitative interviews were conducted with four social workers. The results were analyzed by means of an intersectional perspective. The respondents described that societal power structures were present in social work and affected the clients. Male clients with Western origins were experienced in most situations less vulnerable, depending on other present power relations. Clients with non-European origin were perceived as more vulnerable, while LGBTQI-identified clients largely were invisible. All the social workers emphasized the importance of questioning their own beliefs and prejudices at work, in order to provide good treatment towards the clients. Social workers felt that the power structures of gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality may affect their treatment towards the clients, in one way or another.

Lifetime abuse and somatic symptoms among older women and men in Europe2019In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 14, no 8, article id e0220741Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Research suggests that survivors of interpersonal violence have an increasing experience of bodily symptoms. This study aims to scrutinise the association between lifetime abuse and somatic symptoms among older women and men, considering demographics/socio-economic, social support and health variables. Methods: A sample of 4,467 community-dwelling persons aged 60–84 years (57.3% women) living in seven European countries (Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, Sweden) was recruited for this cross-sectional study. Lifetime abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial and injury) was assessed on the basis of the UK study of elder abuse and the Conflict Tactics Scale-2, while somatic symptoms were assessed by the Giessen Complaint List short version. Results: Women reported somatic symptoms more frequently than men. Multiple regression analyses revealed that lifetime exposure to psychological abuse was associated with higher levels of somatic symptoms among both women and men, while experiencing lifetime sexual abuse was associated with somatic symptoms only among older women, after adjusting for other demographic and socio-economic variables. Country of residence, older age, and low socio-economic status were other independent factors contributing to a higher level of somatic symptoms. Conclusions: The positive association between the experience of abuse during lifetime and the reporting of higher levels of somatic symptoms, in particular among older women, seems to suggest that such complaints in later life might also be related to the experience of mistreatment and not only to ageing and related diseases. Violence prevention throughout lifetime could help to prevent somatic symptoms in later life.

Signs of Safety och barns delaktighet i utredningar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to get an insight in if the method Signs-of- Safety might improve childrens’ participation in investigations concerning themselves. Our research questions were; How do social workers who use or do not use Signs-of- Safety reflect on children's involvement in investigations? and; Is there accordingly to the social workers a variation in the degree of participation among children in investigations where Signs-of-Safety is used compared to investigations where the method is not used? Two focus group interviews in two different municipalities, one where Signs-of-Safety had been used and one where the method not had been used, were performed. The interviews and four written investigations i each work group were analysed by using Hart´s participation ladder and social constructivism. The result showed that all our informants regarded childrens’ participation as important. No differences in the degree of participation of the children could be identified.

" Till slut kraschar man...": Vuxna manliga barns upplevelser av att växa upp med en förälder som har en psykisk funktionsnedsättning2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Perceptions and Experiences of Social Integration among Adult Immigrants2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A sense of social belonging is an important factor for integration. The different experiences that immigrants face towards social integration were of major interest to the authors. The authors conducted a qualitative study based on the experiences that immigrants went through as well as their perceptions of social integration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four immigrants, ranging between 31- 42 years of age. The themes found during the analytic process were: Swedish language, social networks and information, identifying yourself and culture. The most important findings were that social workers and other persons in authorities were important for establishing contacts with native-born, as they introduced them to activities that led to interaction with native Swedish. Social activities, in particular, seemed to play an important role in establishing contact with native-born and creating a social network.

Brott, kön och socioekonomi i Uppsala: en analys av statistik om ungdomar misstänkta för brott i Uppsala kommun2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to analyze delinquency in Uppsala regarding types of crime, neighborhoods and gender, as well as to study whether there was any correlation between delinquency and socioeconomics. By using data on suspected youths in the age of 13-20 in Uppsala, we did a univariate and bivariate statistical analysis. To study the relationship between the neighborhood structure and frequency of suspected youths we first used a correlation matrix and then proceeded with a multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that there are similarities and differences regarding delinquency of boys and girls. The most distinct difference was the frequency of suspected youths. Regarding the regression analysis, the socioeconomics explains a relatively large part of the variance of frequencies of suspected youths.

Familjehemsplacerade barn: En litteraturstudie om anknytningens betydelse2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature study was to compile and analyze excising research about attachment patterns between placed children and their biological parents and its impact on the child ́s mental health. The empirical data was based on previously published research that was analyzed using attachment theory and developmental psychopathology. The study’s main result showed that many foster children lack or have poor contact with their biological parents. However, many children manage well as adolescents and adults, which can be explained with the help ofprotective factors. The main conclusions showed that placed children have an increased risk of negative health development due to the separations and often traumatic events they have undergone in their upbringing. An important conclusion is that a stable and safe school environment, secure attachments to the biological parents, foster parents or another important adult, can be a protective effect and reduce the risk of mental health.

Specialisering inom Socialtjänsten: En kvantitativ studie om klienters parallella kontakter inom IFO2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Swedish social services have become increasingly specialized, with the result that clients with complex needs are in contact with several organizational units and social workers simultaneously. The purpose of the present study was to examine the degree to which such parallel contacts occur within social services and how their incidence has changed over time. We have employed a quantitative method and drawn on statistical material collected from a personal social services organization in a large Swedish town. The material revealed that the extent to which parallel contacts occurred had increased by a third between 2014 and 2018 among clients at the four units that were chosen for the study, while certain client groups had a greater incidence of parallel contacts than other groups. In a concluding section of the study we discussed clients’ complex needs, fragmentation and the overlapping responsibilities of social workers with regard to clients with parallel contacts.

    Abstract [sv]

Intimate partner violence against immigrant women with temporary residence permit: -Interviews with professionals2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore the situation of immigrant women with temporary residence permit who face intimate partner violence and are living in Mid-Sweden. The study had a qualitative approach and four professionals with experience in meeting this group were interviewed using semi-structured questions. The sample consisted of respondents from social services, a women’s shelter, a NGO and a law firm. Findings show that due to controlling behavior by their partners the women are often isolated from society. Economical violence is explained as frequently occurring. Furthermore, the findings show that having a temporary residence permit makes it difficult to leave the abusive relationship, since it is connected to the risk of deportation. According to the respondents the women experience fear and worries related to their legal status. Moreover, the help available for them include supporting conversations, protected living and legal guidance. The findings indicate that for the women’s situation to be improved they need to gain information on their rights.

    Abstract [en]

Elderly care in Sweden has changed over time. A development that has occurred has led to that system of freedom of choice is common for individuals in need of the elderly care. The elderly has gone from care users to become customer´s on a market. The purpose of this essay was to examine whether customers in need of home care experience that they have a real choice in a system of choice. We conducted a qualitative interview study with six individuals who are granted efforts under the Social Services Act, SoL (2001:453). The results show that respondents in our study felt that they had a real choice. The empirical data showed factors that were relevant to the customer´s attitude to their choice. Customers who lacked social support in the choice situations experienced more difficulties to deal with their own choice. The written information was another factor that was perceived difficult to deal with as it was given in excessive quantity. Customer´s own resources of social and cultural capital were relevant to how they valued their freedom of choice.

    Abstract [en]

Our aim of this study was to investigate barriers and opportunities for people with mental disorders getting in to the labor market. This from experiences by people whose daily job contains work rehabilitation for this group in particular. On the basis of five qualitative interviews the results showed that prejudices towards people with mental disorders are a barrier for them to get a wage labor. Furthermore the results showed that low self-esteem within the target group and also high educational demands becomes a barrier to a wage labor. The results also showed that to focus on the healthy aspects may serve as an opportunity for people with mental disorders to get in to the labor market and be able to have a paid job. Another opportunity for this particular group consists of getting a subsidized employment. An increased knowledge among employers about the difficulties and strengths people with mental disorders may have to execute a job, can also serve as an opportunity for them to get an employment.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the present study the aim was to explore the content in a trauma reported in a self-report questionnaire by parents of children with a life threatening illness. Semi-structured interviews were performed, with the aim to explore the specific cognitive and behavioral content of the trauma related symptoms reported by the individual informant. The transcripts of the interviews were analyzed with content analysis using a direct approach with a-priori categories according to the B and C categories of the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The results give us the picture of a complex situation, where the self-report instrument PCL captured a spectrum of qualitatively different cognitions. The parents described traumatic thoughts and images relating not only to experiences in the past (i.e., truly post-traumatic), but also to current stressors and expected future events.

Skolsocialt arbete med suicidalitet: Möjligheter, hinder och vikten av samverkan utifrån kvalitativa intervjuer med skolkuratorer2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine school social workers perceptions and experiences of school social work with suicidality among students. To fulfill this purpose, six qualitative interviews have been made and two questions have been asked. The first question we asked was what kind of perceptions and experiences school social workers have when it comes to suicidality among adolescents in school. The second question we asked was how school social workers describe their practical work with students who are suicidal. The result shows that even though there are experiences of students who have suicidal thoughts, students who have made suicide attempts and students who have committed suicide, suicidality among students is something that is perceived as rare among the school social workers. Stress, mental health problems and difficult life situations is seen to be contributing causes of this phenomena. The result also shows, that school social workers in some ways have the ability to discover and work with students who are suffering from suicidality. However, these possibilities are also limited. School social workers experience a lack of instruments to detect suicide and to be able to work with suicidality in school. Instead, school social workers describes relationships and collaboration with both students and with other groups of staff in school as the primary basis for their work with suicidality among students.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine school counsellors experience of working with newly arrived immigrant students within the school’s organisation. Five school counsellors working in a municipality with many newly arrived immigrant students were interviewed in a qualitative study through a focus group discussion. The results were analysed using organisational theory and compared with previous research. Results showed that the school counsellors lacked explicit organisational routines in the work with newly arrived immigrant students, and that the counsellors worked independently but the guidelines from management were vague and changed on a regular basis. Linguistic confusion and interpretation issues were considered challenging. With more distinct control and structure from management a higher degree of consensus between different professions and other organisations would be made possible in working with newly arrived immigrant students. Finally, school counsellors contribution on how to include students and how collaboration could be improved were discussed

”I min situation som människa är jag en tvåa”: En studie om brukares perspektiv på möten med socialarbetare inom socialtjänstens missbruksvård2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

”It´s never too late.” - Four stories about the path out of crime.

The purpose of this paper was to study the subjective experiences of factors that have contributed to desistance from criminal behavior, and the factors which, according to the interviewees own experiences lead to the maintenance of a more conventional lifestyle. The study was performed using qualitative semi-structured interviews with four ex-offenders. The results have shown that factors, such as love relationships and parenting, as well as desistance from alcohol and drug abuse and changing their environment are factors that in interaction with each other have affected the interviewed individuals desistance from criminal behavior. Routines, new social network and support are factors which, according to the interviewees made it possible to maintain a more conventional lifestyle. The study's main conclusion is that the interaction between external and internal factors so called ”turning points”, is crucial to a desistance process to be successful.

Unga kvinnors upplevelse av abort: En kunskapsöversikt av aktuell forskning utifrån ett socialkonstruktionistiskt perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the social and psychological factors that may be of importance for young women's decisions leading to abortion, and their experience from induced abortion. A knowledge review using the qualitative method of research with empirical information collected from 9 scientific articles. The result shows that social norms and values, relationships with partners, parents and friends, personal values and their degree of self-awareness are of importance for young women's decision on abortion. Women's ways of relating to the pregnancy and depicting the fetus as well as having mental support from close relatives affected their experiences of the abortion. An important conclusion is that a more open and accepting climate in society towards young pregnant women, together with mental support and objective information about women’s own choice in youth clinics, could lead to a greater opportunity for young pregnant women to make independent decisions.

    Abstract [sv]

Leadership and Empowerment in Social Enterprises2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore leadership in social enterprises. It examined how leaders in social enterprises operate by considering insights in their experiences and opinions on the importance of motivation and empowerment of employees. Qualitative data have been gathered using interviews with the leaders of five Swedish social enterprises and research observations. The result shows leaders motivate employees by giving them responsibility, indicating that they are needed and their opinion matters and increasing their self-confidence. Leaders in social enterprises construct a democratic empowering leadership that is context related and adapted to the qualifications of the workforce. They empower employees through delegating duties, supervising them when it is needed; supporting them by giving feedback and encouraging them through open communication, participation and team work. Research on leadership in social enterprises can contribute to the literature by providing an alternative model of successful leadership that empowers employees and seeing the person behind a situation. Leadership descriptors and how succesful leaders function is a vital ethical issue for the development of a democratic participatory leadership. The developed model can be useful for the sustainable development of Social Enterprises, the creation of value for stakeholders and to increase the welfare of the society. For future studies comparative research from the perspective of employees and social enterprises in other countries is suggested to observe aspects important and relevant for the empowerment of employees.

Why Microfinance in RICH Developed Countries?2018In: XIX ISA World Congress of Sociology: Book of Abstracts, 2018, p. 329-329Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This research deals with microfinance. Microcredit means giving people access to financial resources to borrow a small amount of money to invest in income generating context related to business activities. The study analyzes how microfinance is structured and its influence on business development in Sweden. A multiple case study is applied for data collection. Qualitative data have been collected in form of semi-structured interviews. Direct observation and documents have also been used as data source. The study shows that microfinancecontributes to development of sustainable enterprises and innovative product and services development. It is argued that microfinance leads to sharing risk and financing projects in social enterprises, cooperative businesses and associations. It provides people with social networks, enhances their independence, empowers them and improves the quality of their life by generating economic resources. We suggest future comparative studies on the influence of microfinance on business development and women empowerment in emerging economies and developed countries.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the methods that social workers and other professionals use in their work with children and youth with ADHD and behavioural problems.

Seven professionals from different practices and backgrounds where interviewed about their methods and their understanding of the underlying psychosocial mechanisms of behavioural problems in children and youth with ADHD. Results showed a wide variety of methods used across the field.

Interviewees pointed out the importance of flexible and individually adaptable approaches and methods, including forms of cognitive training but also pharmacological aspects. Interviewees agreed on most points regarding the underlying psychosocial mechanisms revolving around childrens academic and social difficulties and processes of negative identity-shaping. The findings indicate that time of diagnosis and parent’s and teacher’s understanding of ADHD plays an important role in the development of behavioural problems, and that a variety of different methodological approaches to intervention seem to have good results.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to research with the help of sociological theories the reasons why resilient children despite a destructive childhood can evolve to social functioning humans. Resilient children in this study have grown up with addiction and/or mental illness among parents in childhood. Data was collected by semi structured interviews with four different themes: the social heritage, education and work, social network and health and well-being. Which we analyzed with the help of the theoreticalframeworks, Antonovskys theory Salutogenesis and Bourdieus Reproduction theory. The results showed that the presence of safety figures in childhood as well as the opportunity to experience a different family dynamic and another environment than their own home environment has affected them positively. Even their abstinence approach to alcohol and drugs, and that they have a strong sense of responsibility has affected their overall social capital positively.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine if the introduction of neighborhood watch affects the number of burglary. The questions asked were; which types of methods of neighborhood watch were used, and what kind of differences there were between selected areas in Södermalm, Stockholm. We created a matched sample of areas and contacted mediators of neighborhood watch in these areas. We conducted a quantitative study using structured interviews and presented data per burglary rates in the areas five years before and one to five years after neighborhood watch was implemented. The results were analyzed by comparative analysis and concluded that common methods of neighborhood watch were e.g. signage, security doors, good contacts between neighbors and attention to suspects in the area. The differences between the methods used means that general conclusions about differences and similarities cannot be concluded. The impact of neighborhood watch differed, and the results were ambiguous.

Peace-building for promoting well-being of communities in Nepal: Exploring the role of Social Workers2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nepal’s history is full of civil turbulence and the socio-economic development has been slow, however the last decade the social changes have been rapid. Some of the social changes include the profession of social work and peace initiative through inter-faith. The aim of this paper is to explore the role of social workers in peace-building in order to promote wellbeing and work-life in Nepal. This paper gives an insight into the life and relationship among the community members in Nepal, and an insight of how culture, religion, and history may impact people’s everyday-life. The data collection of this study was carried out through a field visit, with semi-structured interviews with twenty-five different key informants, during the period of February to May of 2018. The interviewees include grass-root to national level faith-leaders as well as social work academics. The result of this study indicates that there is a lack of trust among the community members, between government and its people, and government and its external influences, which effect community’s socio-economical standard. The findings also conclude that Nepali society lacks adequate and effective information-sharing, which seems to impact the community’s health and work-life. his study gives social workers an insight on how social bonds and trust among groups could be established, which could increase the well-being of the people in rural area of Nepal.

Jag langar alkohol: En kvalitativ studie om föräldrar som köper eller köpt ut alkohol till sina ungdomar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
