TEACHING AND LEARNING GEOMETRY IN PRESCHOOL

The main aim of the study presented in this paper is to explore how preschool teachers can use everyday life settings as teaching and learning situations. The research is praxis near and a goal is to shed light on teaching and learning geometry in three Swedish preschools. In the Swedish preschool curriculum (Lpfö 98 revised 2010, 2011) it is expressed that preschool teachers will create learning environment that enable children to develop the ability to discern and perceive the relationships between concepts. In this on-going research the variation theory (Björklund, 2007; Marton et al., 2004; Runesson; 2006) is used as a theoretical and an analytical framework. In this theory, learning always has an object, ‘what’ and in this study it is geometric figures. The objects are experienced and conceptualized by the children (the learners) in different ways, ‘how’. Marton et.al. (2004) describe three types of the object of learning: the intended object of learning, the enacted object of learning and the lived object of learning. In all, 15 preschool teachers from three preschools are involved in the study. The children are between 1, 5 to 5 years old. In this study the preschool teachers work with variation and contrasts in order to make the object (for example circles) visible for children, and thereby possible to discern. They use fairy tales and children’s play with artefacts as pedagogical tools in everyday life. Observations and documentations are methods to have knowledge of the different forms of the object of learning. So far the findings show that teaching in preschool can be based on a theory of learning where children learn geometry by the discernment of differences and similarities between objects with the help of artefacts in play. The results also show that preschool teachers need knowledge about both the learning theory and the subject. The findings have relevance to Nordic educational research and also in wider areas because it highlights the opportunities for education in preschool; teaching and learning in everyday life.

Teaching Mathematics in Swedish Preschool - Didactic Situations2014In: 24th EECERA Conference : ‘Us, Them & Me: Universal, Targeted or Individuated Early Childhood Programmes’: Abstract Book, 2014, p. 94-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this paper is to present research about teaching in preschool and the meaning of education in the preschool context within the perspective of quality. More specific the research focus on teaching mathematics and didactical considerations.Teaching mathematics always consists of several components with teacher, children and the mathematical content as three major parts. One of these basic components includes preschool teachers' intentions, choices and actions in which the goal is to create opportunities for children's learning in mathematics. Another component is the children, with their own experiences, intentions and their own choices. A third component is the mathematical content of the teaching situation (Brousseau, 1997). Play is a keyconcept in mathematical activities (Bishop, 1992) and in teaching of a mathematical content (Brousseau, 1997).The research focus is on didactic situations and more specifically the social interaction in teaching so-called didactic contract (Brousseau, 1997). Didactic contract can be understood as the dilemma between the educational goals and the participants’ intentions. A case study illustrates didactic situations in one Swedish preschool.Permissions has been gathered from the parents. The ethical rules for researcher in Sweden have been followed. The findings show the teachers use of play aspects in didactic situations expands the learning opportunities. The didactic contract in teaching give learning opportunities for children. Preschool teachers use of play in didactic situations make the teacher's aware of the mathematical and didactic considerations in relation to context and thereby improve the teaching of mathematical content.

Teaching Mathematics in the Pre-school Context2012In: Journal of US-China Education Review B, ISSN 2161-6248, p. 1-16Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe what kind of knowledge base is needed when pre-school teachers work goal-oriented with children’s mathematical learning. The question of this study aims to answer is: What kind of knowledge base do pre-school teachers need when they work with the object of learning in the pre-school context? Both as a theoretical and an analytical framework, we use variation theory. In all, four pre-school teachers are involved in the study. The research results indicate that it is important for pre-school teachers to have subject and pedagogical content knowledge in order to recognize children’s experiences and be aware of their expressions.

The importance of preschool teachers’ knowledge for quality in early childhood education2014In: 24th EECERA annual conference ’Us, Them and Me: Universal, Targeted or Individuated Early Childhood Programmes’: Abstract Book, 2014, p. 54-54Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The research objective is to explore the knowledge teachers in Botswana and Sweden, which is important and/or necessary when they teach mathematics and science in Early Childhood Education (ECE). The aim is to discern the basic teacher knowledge that might be global and knowledge shaped by culture. Previous research shows that Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in early childhood includes didactical considerations in relation to culture and children’s experiences (e.g. Clements & Sarama, 2009). According to Shulman (1986) and later Grossman (1990) teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge both influence teaching. The study involves one survey in Sweden with 64 preschool teachers and one survey in Botswana with 65 preschool educators.  We have also used focus groups interviews to gain deeper knowledge of certain issues.

We follow the ethical rules for researchers in both countries. The considerations include informed consent and confidentiality. The knowledge base teachers need in preschool include pedagogical and didactical knowledge together with subject knowledge. Data shows that there is basic knowledge that is similar and maybe global when it comes to mathematics and science. However, some knowledge is shaped by culture, local traditions and expectations. To ensure quality education for the youngest children educated teachers with knowledge about content like mathematics and science is needed. Teachers also need knowledge about children and of the learning strategies they are using. Teacher knowledge also includes curriculum goals and how to implement curriculum in daily activities and play.

Teaching Mathematics And Science In Botswana And Sweden: A Comparative Account2013In:  , 2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Preschool teachers need a knowledge base that includes pedagogical and didactical knowledge together with the subject knowledge. This paper sheds light on preschool teachers’ experiences in mathematics and science teaching in the early years. The paper covers the situation in Botswana, a developing country and Sweden, a developed one. The aim is to present a comparison of the pedagogical and didactical knowledge of a preschool teacher in mathematics and science. The study highlights Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and didactical considerations of maths and science teaching in preschools with reference to varied contexts, cultures and values. The Research intends to find out existing practices and derive the best method of teaching math and science in countries with diverse cultural and traditional framework. The survey conducted used a sample of 72 preschool teachers in Sweden and 64 in Botswana. Questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions were used for data collection; quantitative as well as qualitative analysis was used to compare the groups in the research study. The findings show that the context and culture play a significant role in teaching learning process. In a developing country like Botswana, the teachers were untrained in ECE and needed professional training to acquire pedagogical and content knowledge to plan maths and science activities and use available resources effectively. In a developed country like Sweden, on the contrary, teachers were trained in ECE, who planned activities and used available resources effectively and yet emphasised on updating content knowledge through specialized training. Both the countries however, need a Science Centre, documentation of experiences, knowledge handling and an administrative support to execute the BEST PRACTICE in teaching of mathematics and science to young children.

Preschool teachers and their professional knowledge: teaching mathematics in preschool2015In: 25th EECERA Annual conference 'Innovation, experimentation and adventure in early childhood' : Abstract Book, 2015, p. 272-272Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to discuss the knowledge preschool teachers need when they teach mathematics. The study focuses on how the knowledge from curriculum affect and is transmitted to teaching and how content is selected, valued and organised when they work with mathematics and documentation. Earlier research shows that the official curricula are important and have impact on how teachers organise the practice (Carr, 2007; Clements & Sarama, 2007). This paper is discussing preschool teacher’s professional knowledge in relation to mathematics and documentation and curriculum. Curriculum theory is used as frame factor in the analysis (Dahlberg et al., 2005; Lundgren, 1972; National Agency, 2010 & 2012). The empirical data drawn from a larger study in Sweden (Bäckman, 2015) include interviews with 19 Swedish preschool teachers. Focus was on their understanding of knowledge and strategies in teaching mathematics. Analyses also consist of frame factors like policy documents and the national preschool curriculum. The ethical considerations follow the rules from The Swedish Research Council (2011). The main findings of the analyses concerning preschool teachers' professional knowledge in relation to teaching mathematics are that policy documents and the national curriculum are strong frame factors and also support different educational strategies. The teachers want to design learning environments that supports children’s mathematical exploring and learning. In that work they used documentation as a strategy to organise the teaching. Children’s teachers need knowledge of the frame factors, both international and national, when they create participatory practice and learning opportunities for children.

Matematikundervisning i förskolan : Vad då undervisning!?2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    • Matematik i förskolan
    • Barns intressen och      erfarenheter
    • Urskiljning av lärandeobjekt
    • Dokumentation

    Abstract [sv]

Matematikundervisning i förskolan - Vad då undervisning!?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the experience with threats and violence towards nurses working in an emergency department, the respondents coping strategies and if the potential vulnerability to threat and violence, changed the behavior of the nurses. The study was conducted at an emergency department in a hospital in the middle of Sweden. By a strategic selection, 8 nurses, was picked out for the study between the ages of 25–55 years and with the experience of working in an emergency department at least for one year. The study was conducted with semi structured interviews, with audio recording that was transcribed verbatim and was analyzed with an inductive thematic analysis. From the analysis, a different set of themes was identified: “Vulnerability”, “Coping strategies” and “Changed behavior”. To the different themes there was subthemes. The result showed that the respondents experienced threats and violence on a daily basis. Clear routines and education about threats and violence were experienced as an important foundation in terms of preventing threats and violence. The social support from colleagues were significant in terms of coping after an incident.KEYWORDS: Threats,

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

This assignment takes its starting point in the problem related residential area of Fisksätra and the real estate company Stena Fastigheter ABs work to reduce segregation, crime, rental vacancy, movement and the large number of household with social/financial problems. This work is important because of the costs, both financial and human, surrounding it. Costs that affect the real estate company as well the entire society. The purpose of this assignment is to concisely describe what the literature and Stena Fastigheter AB does to make a problem related residential area better. And to examine if any simi¬larities exists, if the literature and the companies procedure differ from one another and if they have anything to learn from each other.

    Method

To reach a result I have used a qualitative method with literature studies, interviews and observations.

    Result & Conclusion

I have partly found that both literature and the real estate company describe same conditions that they believe are important to work with. But there is also a difference which mainly is about the literatures insufficient ideas about how you implement a change factor/model, how it genera¬lizes and doesn’t take in fact different ethnical ideas. The company in the other hand doesn’t work with all of the ideas that the literature means are important areas. There are also areas that I prove to be important but both sides have not recognized. These are co-operation, communi¬cation, support/rooting of commitment and knowledge, media contacts, internal- and external marketing, analysis and follow-up with better and more effective connections with other organizations.

    Suggestions for future research

•How shall/can a real estate company use the power behind media and PR to market and wash away a bad reputation from a residential area? A good start could be Grönroos ”Modell över kundupplevd kvalité”.

•How do the management change and support the organization so it fits with the improvement work and change in the residential area? The approach could start from the books ”Marknadsföring i tjänsteekonomin” and ”Kundnära organisation och serviceutveckling i bostadsföretag”.

•How do you optimize the real estate companies co-operation with other organizations and how can they contribute to one another to create synergy effects?

    Contribution of the thesis

This assignment contributes to create a deeper understanding of the problems around the real estate literatures often stiff reality, compared to the dynamical changeful empirical reality. It illustrates differences and simi¬larities of how literature/companies consider working with a problem related residential area, along with missed ideas/work about improvements. Naturally I also have hopes of that this assignment shall make contribute to companies and other authors in there work, and that they will use it as an extra push to solve the problems in problem related residential areas.

Symbolvärlden: en studie i symbolernas värld2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a generic term for a number of satellite system which makes it possible for worldwide navigation, deformation monitoring and satellite positioning. GNSS includes four global operational satellite systems BeiDou, Global Positioning System (GPS), Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) and the European Galileo. The Galileo satellite system is gradually expanding and currently offers 22 active satellites but will include a total of 30 satellites when it is completed 2020.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate Galileo during simulated deformation measurements, individually and in combination with GPS and GLONASS, and to compare these satellite systems. Also, to see these systems deviations with different methods static measurement in a local network, static measurement linked to an external reference station and post processing of single- frequencies in the local network.

A local network was established, and data was processed in Leica Infinity. Static measurements with three GNSS receivers was carried out over one day with a session time of nine hours. The measurements were divided into three sessions with movements of one receiver between the sessions.

The results from the study shows that for all satellite systems individually and in the different combinations, deviations on millimeter level were obtained for the static measurements in a local network. Generally, deviations on millimeter level were obtained for post-processing calculations with only single frequencies for each system. For post-processing with the local network linked to MAR700SWE; which is a SWEPOS reference station located about 17 km from the established network, the result showed higher and more scattered values where the deviations were generally obtained at millimeter- to centimeter level. Generally, the results showed that Galileo compared with GPS and GLONASS receives deviations similar to the other two systems for all methods. The deviations showed with all three systems combined the best results were achieved.

The conclusion from the study is that Galileo is found to have a similar performance as the other GNSS systems in static measurements, though Galileo is not yet fully developed. The results shows that with all three systems, low deviations are regularly obtained. With this Galileo contributes to an improvement when the system is combined with GPS and GLONASS. For deformation monitoring, Galileo is acceptable to use in plane. The methods recommended for deformation measurement are static measurement in a local network and post processing with single frequency measurement, although the latter is not preferred. Connecting a local network to an external reference station is not recommended.

Samverkan mellan skolan och socialtjänsten: En studie om pedagogen och skolans rutiner kring orosanmälan samt samverkan med socialmyndigheten2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Are healthy and successful organizations working accordingly to Quality Management?2009In: International Journal of Workplace Health Management, ISSN 1753-8351, E-ISSN 1753-836X, Vol. 2, no 3, p. 245-257Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine if healthy and successful organizations are working accordingly to Quality Management. The purpose is also to describe in more detail how they are working.

    Methodology/Approach

Three Swedish organizations that have shown excellence in leadership, internal partnership, working environment and profitability have been examined, to find out what methodologies they have used for their success. To discover whether these healthy and successful organizations are working accordingly to Quality Management, Deming’s 14-point list has been used as an analytical tool.

    Findings

Identified methodologies used by the healthy and successful organizations are described.  Viewed in the light of our analysis, a relationship between the three examined healthy and successful organizations and Quality Management is indicated.

    Practical implications

Working with the methodologies described in the paper, the three organizations have improved co-worker health. Other organizations could probably adopt the identified and described methodologies to improve the health of their co-workers and effectiveness in the organization.

    Originality/value

Concerning the performance evaluation and the continuous improvement component in Quality Management, substantial contributions could be made to the health area by applying the tools that the quality area have used over a considerable period to improve the quality outcomes.

Quality and health aspects have common success factors, and a focus on high quality could be seen as positive for health outcomes.

Management methodologies for sustaniable health: A case study at three Swedish organisations2005In: Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Quality Management for Organisational and Regional Development : QMOD 2005, Luleå, 2005, p. 703-712Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Good management and leadership are key factors for sustainable development and long-term success in all types of organisations. Nevertheless, many organisations are still struggling with quality problems, sick ness absence and financial difficulties caused by poor top management. Many researchers have reported on relationships between good management and working environment, quality and efficiency. So the question is why good management is not practised to a greater extent. In this paper, management methodologies for sustainable health among employees and consequent customer satisfaction and good bottom line results are explored by studying top leaders in three Swedish successful organisations. General questions dealt with in the paper are: How can managers commit employees to be part of the proactive work with sustainable health? What methodologies can top managers use to get well-motivated employees, a good working environment, satisfied customers and good financial results? The studied organisations are two manufacturing companies and one hospital. The organisations have received national awards for their excellence in leadership, internal partnership, working environment and efficiency. They all demonstrate good examples of long-term work with sustainable health among employees which has decreased sick ness absence. Explorative qualitative methods have been used to identify management methodologies in the case organisations. The results confirm a relation between leadership and sustainable health. In all organisations sustainable leadership has been characterised by great humanity, a long-range perspective and a holistic view of management. These management methodologies with concrete examples are described in the paper.

Compliance i två storbankers baltiska dotterbolag2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

    Titel:

Compliance i två storbankers baltiska dotterbolag

    Nivå:

    C-uppsats i ämnet företagsekonomi

    Författare:

    Johanna Bäckström, Marita Alanen

    Handledare:

    Markku Penttinen

    Datum:

    2011 - 01

    Syfte:

Effektivisering av materialförsörjning inom tillverkande industri: En fallstudie på Företaget2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

How companies choose to design their supply chain is important for their competitiveness. Supplier relationships are becoming increasingly important to maintain a market position. A key factor for success is to deliver material in the right quantity, at the right time and to the right place. Other factors that play an important role are quality standards, leadership and above all, customer first. The customer should be placed at the top of the value chain, and be treated with respect. Markets are driven by short lead time and companies cannot rely on brand loyalty.

The purpose of this study is to develop a general model for analysis and improvement of the supply chain for manufacturing companies, with focus on components from external suppliers. The model is created based on a literature review and to examine this, the model was tested at Företaget. The empirical data is mainly conducted by interviews, complemented by one observation. The analysis model consists of seven areas based on Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Lean. A key factor to analyze these seven areas is to map the current situation. The results have been filtered through the analysis model and have led to suggestions for improvement. These suggestions are only recommendations and the companies choose what to take further into action.

Företaget is one of Sweden’s leading window manufacturers with two strong brands, Produkt 1 and Produkt 2. Most of the production process is carried out in Edsbyn and the size of the factory is as big as ten football pitches at 65,000 squares meters. Wooden-aluminum windows are an increasing trend and stands for two thirds of the sales. The study is focusing on one selected component which is the flow for aluminum profiles.

The conclusion shows that supply chain management, logistics and Lean play an important role while building an efficient supply chain. Relationship, communication and information sharing with suppliers are of great importance and needs to be constant developed and improved. Leadership is a key element to get all the areas to work and it is the leaders that characterize the culture of the company. The study has resulted in a number of improvement suggestions for Företaget. One suggestion for improvement is to develop a routine for documentation when a deviation occurs in the final assembly. This will enable the follow-up and help to find the main cause for appearance.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyze narratives of violence and explore how this relates to one's own violence. By means of the theory of differential associations and social learning theory, the development of violent behavior was understood and interpreted. Through a hermeneutic approach, seven life stories from the Stockholm Life-Course Project, were interpreted, where child maltreatment and own use of violence had occurred. The main results showed that the individuals experienced that the childhood had characterized their lives and that they developed a behavior of violence. The violence has been interpreted for strategic purposes but also of pure instinct. The results were problematized with the previous research. The study's conclusion is that exposure to child maltreatment constitutes a risk factor for developing violent behavior. However, the relationship is complex and no causal statements can be made based on our research method and our sample.

    Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden it is estimated that there are about 300 000 people living with alcohol addiction today and approximately 700 000 people with harmful use of alcohol, and an estimated 55 000 with drugaddiction. Healthcare staff will meet this large group of patients everywhere.

Aim: Describing health care professionals attitudes toward patients with addictive disorders and patients experience of the health care professionals attitudes. The aim was also to describe an outline of the selected articles of this group.

Method: Literature study came from descriptive design consisting of 11 scientific articles. Article search by database Medline thrue PubMed and PsycINFO.

Main results: The results showed that professional staff statedthey believe patients with addictive disorders self-inflicted their illness and therefore did not deserve any help. It also showed that patients experienced discrimination, abuse, negative attitudes and discrimination in the health care system. According to patient experience this caused many from seeking further treatement.

Conclusions: Patients with addictive disorders were often met with negative attitudes and discrimination from health care professionals. This negative experience resulted in that many patients refrained from seeking treatemtent. It is therefore important that health care professionals receive professional training and education in addictive disorders in order to view every patient as a separate individual in order to reduce any discriminatory behaviour.

Barns motoriska reflexer: vilken kunskap behövs hos förskollärare enligt en sensomotorisk reflexpedagog, en idrottslärare och tre specialpedagoger?2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this study I investigated whether the strength in the manual response for emotional and neutral stimulus search arrays can explain some of the difference in reaction times (RT:s) for emotional stimuli, or not. Earlier, perceptual, cognitive and attentional processes has mostly been used to explain the variance in RT:s. Thirtythree individuals were asked to, as fast as possible, detect a target picture among distractor pictures in 3 rows x 4 columns arranged search arrays. The pictures were categorized in fear relevant animals (snake, spider) and neutral animals (cat). The results showed, more correct responses for cat target. No correlation between strength and fear relevant target picture was found. This can partly be explained by that RT:s and force (Newton) was measured at different time sets with different buttons. The results show that the use of different response buttons results in a difference in the heartbeat frequency.

    Abstract [sv]

Adjustment of Somali women in relation to societal systems in the Swedish society: A qualitative case study of five Somali women’s experiences2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aims of this study are; (a) to explore how Somali women experience their adjustment in the Swedish society in connection to societal systems, and (b) to investigate these women’s perspective of how to make the adjustment process more effective in respect to their needs. The adjustment of the participants has been investigated through a social ecological theoretical framework. Thematic analysis has been utilised to present three themes; assistance, inclusion and self-sufficient which are discussed using social ecological theoretical perspective. Results showed that lack of assistance and sufficient information has led to these women feeling helpless and lost motivation to adjust. The women showed disappointment with regard to self-sufficiency which has not been what they have expected. The suggestions made by the interviewees included assistance in their native language during their first years in the new country, inclusive opening of meeting places and an increased assessment of personal resources when receiving help to find employment. Making adjustment more effective for newly arrived immigrants in new countries is fundamental to international social work.

Gamla bilder, nya identiteter: En queerteoretisk analys av samtida tolkningar och användningar av bilder, berättelser och föreställningar om fornskandinavisk religion2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Prevention of heel pressure ulcers among older patients - from ambulance care to hospital discharge: a multi-centre randomized controlled trial2016In: Applied Nursing Research, ISSN 0897-1897, E-ISSN 1532-8201, Vol. 30, p. 170-175Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to investigate the effect of an early intervention, a heel suspension device boot, on the incidence of heel pressure ulcers among older patients (aged 70 +). Background: Pressure ulcers are a global healthcare issue; furthermore, the heel is an exposed location. Research indicates that preventive nursing interventions starting during the ambulance care and used across the acute care delivery chain are seldom used. Methods: A multi-centre randomized control study design was used. Five ambulance stations, two emergency departments and 16 wards at two Swedish hospitals participated. Altogether, 183 patients were transferred by ambulance to the emergency department and were thereafter admitted to one of the participating wards. Results: Significantly fewer patients in the intervention group (n=15 of 103; 14.6%) than the control group (n=24 of 80; 30%) developed heel pressure ulcers during their hospital stay (p=0.017). Conclusions: Pressure ulcer prevention should start early in the acute care delivery chain to increase patient safety.

Gudinnan och kvinnligheten: En feministisk analys av språket kring kön, kropp och kvinnlighet inom samtida svensk gudinnereligiositet2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Geometric interplay between function subspaces and their rings of differential operators2006In: Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, ISSN 0002-9947, E-ISSN 1088-6850, Vol. 359, no 5, p. 2075-2108Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We study, in the setting of algebraic varieties, finite-dimensional spaces of functions $V$ that are invariant under a ring $\Dc^V$ of differential operators, and give conditions under which $\Dc^V$ acts irreducibly. We show how this problem, originally formulated in physics \cite{kamran-Milson-Olver:invariant,turbiner:bochner}, is related to the study of principal parts bundles and Weierstrass points \cite{EGA4,laksov-thorup}, including a detailed study of Taylor expansions. Under some conditions it is possible to obtain $V$ and $\Dc^V$ as global sections of a line bundle and its ring of differential operators. We show that several of the published examples of $\Dc^V$ are of this type, and that there are many more - in particular, arising from toric varieties.

A MINOR EVALUATION AND QUALITY CONTROL OF THE LAND MANAGEMENT AND GEOMATICS PROGRAMMES: At the University of Botswana2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the current and future requirements in land administration based on emerging land issues in Botswana. With the information gained from this investigation an evaluation and quality control were conducted to see if the University of Botswana (UB) keep the standard required from the industry and society. Since Botswana is under a major land reform there is a serious need for educated people in Land Management and Geomatics, if they will be able to maintain the new cadastral system. This creates a huge pressure on UB, who is the only one providing this kind of education in Botswana, to provide high quality in their programmes. The methods used are qualitative and quantitative in form of a case study with interviews, questionnaires and observations. A literature review with previous scientific research in these subjects was completed to gain information that was needed to succeed with the project. The results from the literature review and the case study highlights important areas that affect the quality in education such as teachers, motivation, environment and equipment. All target groups (students, academic staff and employers) had similar opinions, which are that the competence seems to be more important than the theoretical knowledge, among the students. These results are supported by previous scientific research presented in the literature review. As we see it, UB has come a long way but there are some important parts that have to be improved e.g. the mind-set of the students, increasing the equipment and the access of teachers to provide the assistance that the students need. A future investigation of the negative and positive aspects of providing great allowances to students can be interesting when this can be one of the main reasons of the poor mind-set among the students.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores the meaning(s) of "treatment effect" within the psychodynamic tradition. The conventional wisdom is that a successful treatment presupposes a transformation of unconscious "material" to a conscious level. The "treatment effect" is reinterpreted as being better understood as changing an old (and detrimental) story into a new tale-an alternative narrative about the self. New possibilities following this conceptual change are introduced with the aid of some concrete examples.

    Abstract [sv]

Projektmodell för mindre produktutvecklingsprojekt2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

How projects are managed can have a big impact on the project`s result. There are different types of frameworks on the market whose purpose is to help project leaders to pursue a successful project. Those frameworks focus on larger product development projects and both the literature and companies have addressed that the frameworks are too comprehensive for smaller product development projects. They have therefore asked for a framework that is more suitable for those smaller projects. To complete a project on time and to the planned cost is important in both larger and smaller product development projects. The purpose of this research is therefore to create a model for how small product development projects should be pursued.

Various theories about how a project should be managed have been investigated to achieve the purpose of this research. A case study has also been done on a company that conducts small product development projects. Benchmarking has been done within the firm and on a company that has the same organization structure and conduct development projects. The theories that have been used in the study has been collected through well know databases and books in the field for the research.

The result of the research is a model that will serve as a support for the project leader in small product development projects of existing products. This model processes the phases that a successful project should go through and how the project leader should handle the critical elements in the project.

    Abstract [en]

Since the year of 2000 it has been legal for companies in Sweden to repurchases their own stocks. The purpose of this study is to examine if it has been possible to make a positive abnormal return in Stockholmsbörsen by buying stocks in companies that has announced a buyback program. Our study includes 59 companies that have accomplished a buyback program throw the years of 2000 to 2006. To calculate the abnormal return we use the BHAR method with Affärsvärldens generalindex and branchindex as benchmarks. The result shows a significant positive abnormal return of 23,56 percent the first 12 month after the announcement with Affärsvärldens generalindex as benchmark. When the branchindex is used as benchmark the result shows a positive abnormal return of 10,96 percent under the first 12 month. Furthermore we consider that our result support the Underreactionhypothesis because the positive abnormal return has a tendency to grow exponential.

    Abstract [sv]

Development from Participation in Women’s Groups: Experiences from Bolivia2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is the result of a field study conducted in urban Bolivia on women‘s group in which women are organised in order to work, get social support and personal capacity building under the responsibility of a licensed psychologist. The study sought to examine the groups by focusing on the experiences of the women in relation to the process of empowerment and the development of the community. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with half of the women participating in the group. Results showed that weekly capacity building workshops and social inclusion have positive effects on the women‘s development in terms of self-confidence and communication skills. The economic development has not been what the women expected and they showed great disappointment regarding that. The results were further analysed by the use of Bronfenbrenner‘s bioecological perspective, an analysis in which the main conclusion drawn was the positive effects of strong development from interaction between actors within the women‘s microsystems. A conclusive analysis has proposed more active participation from the women and more control over the progress of the groups to further promote the process of empowerment.

Stand age and fine root biomass, distribution and morphology in a Norway spruce chronosequence in southeast Norway2008In: Tree Physiology, ISSN 0829-318X, E-ISSN 1758-4469, Vol. 28, no 5, p. 773-784Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We assessed the influence of stand age on fine root biomass and morphology of trees and understory vegetation in 10-, 30-, 60- and 120-year-old Norway spruce stands growing in sandy soil in southeast Norway. Fine root (< 1, 1–2 and 2–5 mm in diameter) biomass of trees and understory vegetation (< 2 mm in diameter) was sampled by soil coring to a depth of 60 cm. Fine root morphological characteristics, such as specific root length (SRL), root length density (RLD), root surface area (RSA), root tip number and branching frequency (per unit root length or mass), were determined based on digitized root data. Fine root biomass and morphological characteristics related to biomass (RLD and RSA) followed the same tendency with chronosequence and were significantly higher in the 30-year-old stand and lower in the 10-year-old stand than in the other stands. Among stands, mean fine root (< 2 mm) biomass ranged from 49 to 398 g m–2, SLR from 13.4 to 19.8 m g–1, RLD from 980 to 11,650 m m–3 and RSA from 2.4 to 35.4 m2 m–3. Most fine root biomass of trees was concentrated in the upper 20 cm of the mineral soil and in the humus layer (0–5 cm) in all stands. Understory fine roots accounted for 67 and 25% of total fine root biomass in the 10- and 120-year-old stands, respectively. Stand age had no affect on root tip number or branching frequency, but both parameters changed with soil depth, with increasing number of root tips and decreasing branching frequency with increasing soil depth for root fractions < 2 mm in diameter. Specific (mass based) root tip number and branching density were highest for the finest roots (< 1 mm) in the humus layer. Season (spring or fall) had no effect on tree fine root biomass, but there was a small and significant increase in understory fine root biomass in fall relative to spring. All morphological characteristics showed strong seasonal variation, especially the finest root fraction, with consistently and significantly higher values in spring than in fall. We conclude that fine root biomass, especially in the finest fraction (< 1 mm in diameter), is strongly dependent on stand age. Among stands, carbon concentration in fine root biomass was highest in the 30-year-old stand, and appeared to be associated with the high tree and canopy density during the early stage of stand development. Values of RLD and RSA, morphological features indicative of stand nutrient-uptake efficiency, were higher in the 30-year-old stand than in the other stands.

Upplevelsen av livskvalitet hos patienter som drabbats av Poststroke Depression: en litteraturstudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Aim: The aim was to, through literature describe how patients, who are suffering from Poststroke Depression (PSD) experience their quality of life (QOL).

    Design: A descriptive literature study.

Method: Literature published during the period 2002-2012 were searched in the databases PubMed and CINAHL. The litetature study is based on 13 scientific articles.

Results: QOL can be approached in two dimensions, mentally and physically. When life changes within these dimensions after stroke, this can affect how individuals experience their QOL. Patients who developes PSD can experience a poorer QOL, since these patients could experience reduced physical activity, as well as reduced mobility and decreased independence in performing activities of daily living (ADL). This decrease in activity level may lead to, that the individuals are less likely to participate in social activities and/or sparetime activities, which can result in a form of isolation. Communication reductions are another aspect that can lead to that these individuals avoid participating in activities, since they may experience limitations in daily communication. The experience of having reduced social life shows a strong connection to the experience of poorer QOL. Social support from health professionals, for example, has been shown to contribute to an increased experience of QOL.

Conclusion: Patients suffering from PSD often experience poorer QOL, in both the mental and the physical dimension. A matter of great importance is that nursing is performed after the patient’s personal needs and interests and that patientes are given proper information about the inpact of rehabilitation and its effects on the recovery phase.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Suicide is a global health problem, according to WHO 800 000 people worldwide commit suicide every year and the suicide attempts are far more. Aim: To describe intensive care nurses’ (ICU nurse) experiences of taking care of patients, at an intensive care unit, who has committed a suicide attempt. Method: A descriptive design with a qualitative approach was used. Semi structured interviews with ten ICU nurses were conducted and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Five categories were found; To meet patients who has committed a suicide attempt is complicated, To meet relatives of patients who has committed a suicide attempt, To patients who has committed a suicide attempt, psychiatry has meaning, To care for patients who has committed a suicide attempt brings up a lot of emotions, and To experience limitations and possibilities when taking care of patients who has committed a suicide attempt. ICU nurses described the complexity of nursing, communicating and treating patients who have committed a suicide attempt. These patients were described as a recurrent group, who often had an earlier experience of psychiatric care. They described a variety of reactions from relatives and the relatives need for support. ICU nurses experienced a long wait for the psychiatric consultation which contributed to slowing down the planning of the patients’ continued care. ICU nurses referred to suicide as tragic and that it brings up a lot of emotions among them. They also described that they experienced differences in severity of the suicide attempt depending on the use of suicide method and that prejudices existed among colleagues. ICU nurses described they lacked knowledge about mental illness and wished for better cooperation with psychiatric care. Conclusion: ICU nurses described the complexity of nursing, communicating and treating this group of patients due to lack of knowledge and that cooperation with psychiatric care could be improved.
