Fjäll som kultur?2015Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to enhance the understanding of how the reception of older immigrants can be perceived in a swedish medium-sized municipality. The questions asked was how representatives from immigrant associations and municipality officials looked upon the reception. To investigate this have documents concerning the reception of immigrants been analysed. Representatives from three immigrant associations have been interviewed, and three municipality officials partook in a focusgroupinterview. Theories used to analyze the material were Aaron Antonovskys theory sense of coherence (KASAM), Roine Johanssons organisational theory and Berth Danermarks thoughts on cooperation. The result from the study indicated that no special planning is made for the reception of older immigrants. Both the representatives and the officials were critical of the reception. The criticism concerned the lack of planning and cooperation between organisations that meet immigrants. The importance of using the knowledge from integrated countrymen was stressed to create understanding for cultural differences.

Leder förändring till förbättring?: Socialsekreterares upplevelser av det reviderade BBIC2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

BBIC is a working method, documentation and processing system with children’s needs in focus. The purpose is to promote social work based on knowledge. During 2014, the National Board of Health and Welfare was authorised by the government to further develop BBIC. The study partly focused on making BBIC easier to use and to increase the participation of children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to look into social workers’ experiences after that the revision took place. Six interviews were conducted in three different municipalities in the middle of Sweden. The result of the study showed that the revised BBIC contributed to a significantly simpler, clearer and above all a more structured way of working, reducing the time previously used on documentation. This in turn meant that it became easier to inform and to involve children and adolescents. The study result therefore indicates that BBIC has become easier to use after the revision and that the participation has increased.

Consequences of Internet (mis)use: views among university students and social workers2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to explore views on consequences of Internet use among young people sampled at a Swedish university. Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were used. The quantitative data were gathered by a quantitative survey conducted among 50 university students at the University of Gävle. To broaden the picture, face-to-face interviews were conducted with two social workers (from Sweden and Russia). In order to analyze and interpret the data collected, Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development and learning theory were applied. Symptoms of Internet addiction proposed by Young (1998a) were used to examine whether the data collected demonstrated presence of Internet addiction among sampled university students. The results indicated that the majority of respondents had an excessive use of Internet, however, the female participants and different aspects of their everyday life seemed to be more influenced by Internet use compared to the male respondents. Another conclusion is that the field of social work has to increase the knowledge and competence in diagnosing the symptoms of excessive Internet use. Internet related disorders are problems of increased proportion and mental health counsellors need to be prepared to meet a growing demand in the area of social work.

Psykisk ohälsa hos barn och unga såsom den framställs i media: En diskursanalys av svenska tidningsartiklar från dags- och kvällspress under tidsperioden 161020-1704202017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Women's vulnerability to domestic violence is a widespread social problem that causes problematic consequences for society and to the individual. I wondered what significance the professionals' knowledge has to help abused women, how professionals and abused women describe abused womens needs, and how the professionals work with and consider important in meeting with and helping abused women. Six qualitative interviews with a social worker who were working as a therapist in the social services, as councilors and in women's shelter were performed. The results showed that the professionals regarded specific knowledge of domestic violence as a prerequisite for being able to help the woman adequately. Furthermore, it appeared that the woman's needs could be psychological need of support and processing, but also help with practical issues to sort out their situation. The social workers were mapping the violence and the situation of the abused women. The mapping could determine the woman's needs and potential contributions.

"Som vilka föräldrar som helst": En kvalitativ fokusgruppsstudie om föräldrar som har en lindrig utvecklingsstörning och deras barn - utifrån socialsekreterares beskrivningar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The perception of individuals with a mild intellectual disability as parents has changed over time. The devolpment has resulted in that the normalization principle is considered to be valid when these individuals become parents. This group of individuals has gone from being considered as incapable parents to being considered parents like anybody else. The purpose of this study was to examine the way social workers understand and work with this group of parents and their children if they suspect that the children is being maltreated. We conducted a qualitative study using a focusgroupinterview with five participants in whom all of them are social workers working with children and families that need support. The results show that social workers experience that parents with a mild intellectual disability have some problems in their parenting - like any other parent. They also experience that the children of these parents are exposed to several risk factors. An important conclusion of this essay is that it seems to be taboo to question parents with a mild intellectual disability's parenting skills. This makes it difficult for the social workers in their work with these families.

Pappa i fängelse: En studie från insidan2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

När blir man egentligen svensk?: Ensamkommande flyktingbarns uppfattning av integrationsprocessen i Sverige2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate unaccompanied refugee children's perception of the integration process in Sweden. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six young adults who came to Sweden as unaccompanied refugee child. The results have been analyzed through the theories empowerment, system theory and role theory. The main results show that the key to integration primarily is the ability to speak the Swedish language. The language was also the main obstacle for successful integration the study shows. Furthermore, the results show that the asylum process is perceived as difficult and residence permits are a prerequisite for integration. A warm reception and a strong support are of great importance when arriving in Sweden. Moreover, adaptation to norms, rules and Swedish culture became a natural part of the integration process. The social networking is important for significant well-being. Their expectations have been met and they have been successful in their integration process. They have established themselves in a favorable life situation in Swedish society and are optimistic about their future.

    Abstract [en]

Through the years the child perspective is a word that has developed in its meaning and significance. The aim of this study was to investigate how family law investigators experience that the child perspective is being used in family law work. Four family law investigators in a middle-sized municipality in Sweden were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. The most significant results was that the child perspective, according to the family law investigators, has grown stronger but that there is’ still a need for development, for example listening to the voice of children and letting them participate more. The family law investigators experienced a challenge in the reinforcement of the child perspective in their work because of the parents’ power and a fear of making the child’s situation worse and that it also was time pressuring. They saw possibilities in the development of collaboration and in the legislation. The question if the social construction of children’s position in society needs to change in order for the child perspective to continue to be further strengthened and developed is discussed.

Prokrastinering, arbeta extra och upplevd stress: En kvantitativ studie inriktad på heltidsstudenter vid högskola/universitet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine if there were any differences regarding procrastination and perceived stress between full-time female and male college students with or without work parallel to their studies, as well as the relationship between procrastination and perceived stress. A web-based questionnaire was designed based on Pure Procrastination Scale (PPS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14). The survey was shared on Facebook where the participants, 164 students of which 82 women and 82 men, were selected by convenience sampling. The result of the study showed that students who worked extra procrastinates less than students without work, and that women procrastinates more than men. The result also showed that students who worked extra were less stressed than students without work, and that women were more stressed than men. There was a strong positive correlation between procrastination and perceived stress for all groups in the study. Moreover, the effects of gender and extra work on procrastination disappeared when stress was statistically controlled for. This indicate that underlying factors, such as stress, can play an important role in procrastination.

Att hjälpa eller stjälpa?: en kvalitativ studie kring drabbades erfarenheter av katastrofbiståndet efter tsunamin 20042012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to examine school counselors experiences of working with newly arrived students. To fulfill the purpose, five qualitative interviews with school counselors were conducted. The school counselor profession is covered by a large degree of discretion, but it was limited by various organizational limitations, mainly the lack of resources in schools. Which resulted in an excessive number of students per school counselor, which led to a lack of time in their work. The school counselors had a holistic perspective in their work with the students, by paying attention to both the psychological and social needs. The most prominent need of the students were the need to acquire the swedish language. To meet the needs of the children the school counselors worked on an individual, group and community level. This study also showed that it was important to collaborate with other professions and a special understanding in form of cultural competence was needed.

Segregation föder segregation: En studie av hur boendesegregationen inverkar på ungdomars utbildningsmöjligheter2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study was to examine the impact of residential segregation on young people´s educational opportunities. The study included 15 scientific articles and reports which were analyzed by using system theory and Bourdieu´s theory of capital forms. The results showed that the social environment is an imortant factor in explaining the academic performance of young people. The adults in the residential area are important as role models. Norms and behaviors in the immediate environment play a crucial role in the socialization of young people. A determining factor of young people´s academic performance and on their school choice is which forms of capital forms and resources they bring from their childhood. With less capital, it also follows that they can not acquire the resources that are necessary to choose a resourceful school instead of the school in the neighbourhood. The conclusion shows that young people´s school results are affected by the system they are part of and how strong capital resources they bring. Where and how you live, do have an impact on young people’s opportunities for further studies.

Substantivsturbo hos tvåspråkiga barn2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A revised form of MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory III (SCDI-III) was presented designed for Swedish speakingchildren aged 2 years 6 months–4 years 0 months with the objective to give a proxy measure of their language competence. The instrumentcontains a vocabulary checklist with 100 words, mainly predicates, from four areas; Food words, Body words, Mental words and Emotionwords. Two sections assess the child’s grammar skills and a final section appraises the child’s metalinguistic awareness. Assessments from1,134 parents are reported. Scales with adequate psychometric properties were formed for each section. Monthly median values andspread of score distributions are presented for each scale. Girls scored higher than boys on all scales. The revision, sampling procedures, demographic variables and issues of reliability and validity, are discussed. The general structure of the instrument can well be integrated insimilar instruments designed for other languages and cultures.

    Abstract [en]

Self-determination theory proposes that all humans have three intrinsic psychological needs: the needs for Autonomy, Competence, and Relatedness. These needs take different forms in different areas of life. The present study examines the psychometric properties of a Swedish version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction at Work (BPNS-W) scale. The fit of 10-factor structures previously suggested for related versions of the scale were compared. Cross-sectional data from 1,200 participants were examined in a confirmatory factor analysis framework. Both the original 21-item version and a reduced 12-item version of the BPNS-W were examined. The General Health Questionnaire was used for validation. The results supported a three-factor solution with correlated error variances for the reversed items. Invariance testing of the long and short scales gave best support to the short scale, for which partial scalar invariance was achieved. The external validity of the short scale was supported by a hierarchical regression analysis in which each need made a unique contribution in predicting psychological well-being. In conclusion, the results corroborate a three-factor structure of BPNS-W. Although not perfect the short scale should, it is argued, be preferred over the long version. Directions for the future development of the scale are discussed.

Differences between girls and boys in emerging language skills: Evidence from 10 language communities2012In: British Journal of Developmental Psychology, ISSN 0261-510X, E-ISSN 2044-835X, Vol. 30, no 2, p. 326-343Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study explored gender differences in emerging language skills in 13,783 European children from 10 non-English language communities. It was based on a synthesis of published data assessed with adapted versions of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) from age 0;08-2;06. The results showed that girls are slightly ahead of boys in early communicative gestures, in productive vocabulary and in combining words. The difference increased with age. Boys were not found to be more variable than girls. Despite extensive variation in language skills between language communities, the difference between girls and boys remained. This suggests that the difference is caused by robust factors that do not change between language communities.

Problems and limitations in studies on screening for language delay2010In: Research in Developmental Disabilities, ISSN 0891-4222, E-ISSN 1873-3379, Vol. 31, no 5, p. 943-950Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study discusses six common methodological limitations in screening for language delay (LD) as illustrated in 11 recent studies. The limitations are (1) whether the studies define a target population, (2) whether the recruitment procedure is unbiased, (3) attrition, (4) verification bias, (5) small sample size and (6) inconsistencies in choice of "gold standard". It is suggested that failures to specify a target population, high attrition (both at screening and in succeeding validation), small sample sizes and verification bias in validations are often caused by a misguided focus on screen positives (SPs). Other limitations are results of conflicting methodological goals. We identified three such conflicts. One consists of a dilemma between unbiased recruitment and attrition, another between the comprehensiveness of the applied gold standard and sample size in validation and the third between the specificity of the gold standard and the risk of not identifying co-morbid conditions.

Hästen följer en: En kvalitativ studie om behandlares upplevelse av hästunderstödd psykosocial terapi2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis analyses the use of horse-assisted therapy amongst mental health practitioners within multiple sectors. The aim was to establish whether a change could be detected in participants. Adopting a qualitative approach the research was mainly conducted through four semi-structured interviews with equine-assisted therapy practitioners.

The results show that the practitioners believe the horses improve the interactions between the practitioners and participants. The practitioners believe this improvement is due to the non-verbal participation of the horse in interface with the practitioner and participant and that the horses increase the participants’ trust in others as well as their confidence when establishing relationships with others.

The participants gained an opportunity to create meaning within their lives through everyday routines, structures and feel a sense of context. Some of the practitioners struggled to identify what causes the change but recognised a positive change in the majority of participants.

    Abstract [sv]

Totalt samlades 85 enkäter in, varav 84 hade besvarats fullständigt.

    Abstract [en]

Social media has increased significantly in recent years and become a part of many people's lives. As social media progresses, questions about its impact on people's well being are highlighted. The aim of this study was to examine how young girls reflect on social media's impact on their self-esteem and well-being. Two focus group interviews were conducted. A qualitative content analysis was created from the collected material, where we with the help of social constructivism and symbolic interactionism analyzed the collected empirical data. The results showed that the interviewees regarded social media as having an impact on high school girls' self-esteem and well-being. This was shown in particular by the importance of "likes". In the discussion section we discuss the results that are connected to the previous research.

De osynliga barnen: En kvalitativ studie om hur ett barnperspektiv tillämpas i vuxenpsykiatrisk verksamhet.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Självläkning från ett alkoholmissbruk: En kunskapsöversikt2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper was to study how the phenomenon natural recovery from alcohol misuse is presented in the national and international research. This paper includes three questions at issue: (1) How is alcohol misuse defined in the research documents? (2) How is natural recovery defined in the research documents? (3) How is the process of natural recovery presented in the research documents? To answer these questions a selective qualitative knowledge overview was made and a qualitative content analysis was used as research method. This research overview of knowledge is based on ten research documents including qualitative and quantitative studies conducted between 1996 – 2007. This study has a post modern approach and the results in this study were analyzed on the basis of social constructivist theory. Results showed that the process of natural recovery was promoted by access to personal and social resources. Results also showed that the meaning of the concepts natural recovery and alcohol misuse varied and that there was no uniform definition of these concepts. Due to the various forms of defining these concepts the meaning of the phenomenon natural recovery proved to be indistinct.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how our selected municipalityaddressed theirpreventive work regarding threat and violence among social workers, what strategies social workers have to overcome intimidating situations, and also what level of education social workers have. Previous research shows that education for social workers inthis topicoften is neglected. The study was conducted by one focus group interview with social workersall working inchild and familywelfarein our selected municipality. The main result of the study is that social workers experience that the municipalitysinternal agenda against threat and violence works well and gives support in their work. Despite this, the social workers expressed a desire to get morerelevant education about threats and violence to be able toavoid risk-taking behavior and be able to perform a more secure job. According to the social workers some of the strategies that affected the safety in their profession was the possibilityto have a direct and clear communication with the client to try and make the meeting between client and social workers more relaxed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to create an increased knowledge and understanding of young adults’ experiences from growing up as a child in a family with alcohol abuse, as well as studying long-term consequences of this. In the study five qualitative interviews were conducted, with young adults who grew up with a parent who abused alcohol. The results of the study were analyzed by Bronfenbrenner's developmental ecological model, as well as by the theoretical concepts risk, protective factors and resilience. Results and conclusions showed, that all informants experienced negative consequences during childhood and in adult life, due to the parent’s abuse. The families of the informants were characterized by an abnormal use of alcohol during their childhood, which led to a high level of conflict, lack of relationships, a major responsibility at home for the informants, negative health effects and school difficulties. The young adults stated, that they are living a good life today, but that childhood has made its mark in their minds. The informants narrated experienced health problems, difficulties with feeling trust and expressing how they feel as well as a lack of relation to the parent with addiction.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how social workers relate to societal notions of gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality in meetings with clients. As the basis of the study, qualitative interviews were conducted with four social workers. The results were analyzed by means of an intersectional perspective. The respondents described that societal power structures were present in social work and affected the clients. Male clients with Western origins were experienced in most situations less vulnerable, depending on other present power relations. Clients with non-European origin were perceived as more vulnerable, while LGBTQI-identified clients largely were invisible. All the social workers emphasized the importance of questioning their own beliefs and prejudices at work, in order to provide good treatment towards the clients. Social workers felt that the power structures of gender, class, ethnicity and sexuality may affect their treatment towards the clients, in one way or another.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to get an insight in if the method Signs-of- Safety might improve childrens’ participation in investigations concerning themselves. Our research questions were; How do social workers who use or do not use Signs-of- Safety reflect on children's involvement in investigations? and; Is there accordingly to the social workers a variation in the degree of participation among children in investigations where Signs-of-Safety is used compared to investigations where the method is not used? Two focus group interviews in two different municipalities, one where Signs-of-Safety had been used and one where the method not had been used, were performed. The interviews and four written investigations i each work group were analysed by using Hart´s participation ladder and social constructivism. The result showed that all our informants regarded childrens’ participation as important. No differences in the degree of participation of the children could be identified.

Emotional Responses (verbal and psychophysiological) to pictures of food stimuli2010In: Psicologia, ISSN 0874-2049, Vol. 24, no 2, p. 89-111Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Emotional processing of food-related pictures was studied in four experiments, comparing participants who revealed unhealthy attitudes toward food, dieting and body shape with control groups. All subjects were female and responses to pictures of low and of high calorie foods were compared to responses to other emotional stimuli. The first three experiments measured verbal and autonomic responses and Experiment 4 was a classical conditioning study. In Experiments 2-4, pictures were presented backward masked in order to observe automatic, non-conscious responses. The results showed that, in general, food pictures were processed in the same way as other emotional material, both verbally and psychophysiologically. Although there were some results indicating a difference between groups, the general pattern was that participants selected for being more worried about food and dieting did not show higher reactivity to food cues.

Perceptions and Experiences of Social Integration among Adult Immigrants2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A sense of social belonging is an important factor for integration. The different experiences that immigrants face towards social integration were of major interest to the authors. The authors conducted a qualitative study based on the experiences that immigrants went through as well as their perceptions of social integration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four immigrants, ranging between 31- 42 years of age. The themes found during the analytic process were: Swedish language, social networks and information, identifying yourself and culture. The most important findings were that social workers and other persons in authorities were important for establishing contacts with native-born, as they introduced them to activities that led to interaction with native Swedish. Social activities, in particular, seemed to play an important role in establishing contact with native-born and creating a social network.

Arbetsmotivation och arbetsrelaterad identitet:Spelar anställningstid och anställningsform roll?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to analyze delinquency in Uppsala regarding types of crime, neighborhoods and gender, as well as to study whether there was any correlation between delinquency and socioeconomics. By using data on suspected youths in the age of 13-20 in Uppsala, we did a univariate and bivariate statistical analysis. To study the relationship between the neighborhood structure and frequency of suspected youths we first used a correlation matrix and then proceeded with a multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that there are similarities and differences regarding delinquency of boys and girls. The most distinct difference was the frequency of suspected youths. Regarding the regression analysis, the socioeconomics explains a relatively large part of the variance of frequencies of suspected youths.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature study was to compile and analyze excising research about attachment patterns between placed children and their biological parents and its impact on the child ́s mental health. The empirical data was based on previously published research that was analyzed using attachment theory and developmental psychopathology. The study’s main result showed that many foster children lack or have poor contact with their biological parents. However, many children manage well as adolescents and adults, which can be explained with the help ofprotective factors. The main conclusions showed that placed children have an increased risk of negative health development due to the separations and often traumatic events they have undergone in their upbringing. An important conclusion is that a stable and safe school environment, secure attachments to the biological parents, foster parents or another important adult, can be a protective effect and reduce the risk of mental health.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to help create a greater knowledge and understanding for now young adult biological children's experiences of having had parents being foster care parents and the meaning of it. The purpose was also to examine if these children had need of and what kind of aid they got. This study was based of five qualitative interviews with now young adults that’s been growing up with parents that were foster parents. The result in the study was analysed with Schultz Jørgensens familyplanetheory. Results and interpretations showed that biological children experience a participation in the foster care process and describes the relation to the foster children as that of a sibling and friend. Biological children describe that they have an easier time creating relations to younger foster siblings than to teenagers and children in the same age. The results showed that the informants experience more positive feelings than negative feelings with having foster siblings. The biological children also describe that they felt a loss of opportunities of aid from the social services.

    Abstract [sv]

Intimate partner violence against immigrant women with temporary residence permit: -Interviews with professionals2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore the situation of immigrant women with temporary residence permit who face intimate partner violence and are living in Mid-Sweden. The study had a qualitative approach and four professionals with experience in meeting this group were interviewed using semi-structured questions. The sample consisted of respondents from social services, a women’s shelter, a NGO and a law firm. Findings show that due to controlling behavior by their partners the women are often isolated from society. Economical violence is explained as frequently occurring. Furthermore, the findings show that having a temporary residence permit makes it difficult to leave the abusive relationship, since it is connected to the risk of deportation. According to the respondents the women experience fear and worries related to their legal status. Moreover, the help available for them include supporting conversations, protected living and legal guidance. The findings indicate that for the women’s situation to be improved they need to gain information on their rights.
