Lärares syn på anmälningsplikten: en kvalitativ studie som belyser lärares tankar kring anmälningsplikten då misstanke finns att ett barn far illa2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Even though recent decades have seen a clear trend towards organizational specialization within Swedish personal social services (PSS), there is a lack of knowledge about the consequences of this, particularly from a client perspective. The aim of this compilation thesis is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizational specialization for clients with complex needs. The empirical material consists of a survey and an interview study, both addressing clients whose needs can be considered complex since they entail several parallel contacts with different specialized PSS units. Article one is a research review aimed at summarizing and discussing the research on organizational structures in the social services, and these structures' impact on work with clients. The review suggests that, to function adequately, social service organizations need to combine and balance aspects of both specialization and integration. Article two aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive and value the service conditions of the organizationally specialized PSS. The main findings are that clients primarily perceive and value their encounters with the specialized PSS negatively, and that they experience several elements of service fragmentation. The aim of article three is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialized PSS. A key finding is that clients combine different approaches (categorized as consensus, resignation, fight, and escape) in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests. Article four aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive the conditions for helping relations in a PSS setting marked by organizational specialization. A lack of system trust, the people-processing dimensions of work, and an organizational and professional emphasis on formal organizational structures and boundaries were found to constitute unfavourable conditions. Conversely, the occurrence of individual trust, the people-sustaining and people-changing dimensions of client work, and the boundary-spanning efforts of both informal organizations and individual social workers constituted favourable conditions. The thesis concludes that there seems to be a substantial lack of fit between the logics and features of organizational specialization on one hand, and the complex and interwoven nature of clients’ actual needs and everyday lives on the other. It is also argued that organizational specialization means that the complexity involved in encounters between clients and the PSS is overlooked or obscured. Further research on the structural arrangements and service conditions that surround encounters between clients and the social services is suggested, especially research that adopts a client perspective.

‘Sometimes it’s really complicated!’: clients with complex needs on their encounters with specialised personal social service organisations in Sweden2016In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 6, no 3, p. 188-200Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research in the field of human services has paid limited attention to the consequences of the international development toward organisational specialisation; the consequences for clients have been overlooked in particular. The aim of the article is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizationally specialised personal social services (PSS) in Sweden for clients with complex needs. Findings from a survey and an interview study addressing PSS clients show that clients primarily perceived their encounters with the specialised PSS negatively, and that they experienced several elements of service fragmentation. Implications of the findings are discussed in light of previous research and theory in the area.

The Balancing Act: Clients with Complex Needs Describe Their Handling of Specialised Personal Social Services in Sweden2017In: British Journal of Social Work, ISSN 0045-3102, E-ISSN 1468-263X, Vol. 47, no 3, p. 611-629Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Dealing with specialised social service organisations can be a challenge for clients with complex needs. These organisations may appear confusing and hard to navigate, and there is also a risk of service fragmentation, as such clients often participate simultaneously in an array of interventions. An additional complication to be handled is that these parallel interventions can range from voluntary to more or less involuntary. The aim of the present article is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialised personal social services (PSS), using data from a qualitative interview study with PSS clients in Sweden. A conceptual model is presented, covering four ideal typical client approaches to these specialised services: consensus, resignation, fight and escape. One key finding is that the clients combined these approaches in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests in their parallel contacts with different parts of the specialised PSS organisation. The article concludes that future improvements in social services could be made by paying more attention to the structural arrangements that surround encounters between clients and the social services, as well as clients’ valuable first-hand knowledge of social service organisations.

Conditions for helping relations in specialized personal social services: a client perspective on the influence of organizational structure2019In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article highlights organizational structure as a factor influencing conditions for helping relations. It is based on a survey study and an interview study, both directed at parents in families that have parallel contacts in different parts of Swedish personal social services (PSS). The aim is to describe and analyse conditions for helping relations when clients with complex needs encounter specialized PSS.

Low system trust, people processing dimensions of work, and an organizational and a professional emphasis on formal organizational structures and boundaries were found to constitute unfavourable conditions. Conversely, an occurrence of individual trust, people sustaining and people changing dimensions of work, as well as informal organization and individual social workers’ boundary spanning efforts, constituted favourable conditions. The article concludes that greater understanding of how clients are affected by contextual service conditions can give some pointers towards how to generally improve services for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.

Samverkan - Hinder eller resurs för individer med psykosociala problem?: En kvalitativ studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To cooperate in social work is a current theme as two new sections of the law has arisen in the recent years. These make clear that collaboration should take place between local governments when working with individuals with psychosocial problems. The purpose of the study was to examine how collaboration work between the municipality and county meets the individual's right to social security, equal living conditions and self-determination. In this study, where four professional performers and six individuals with psychosocial problems participated, the respondents' answers to how they experience that the interaction meets the intention of the law where compared. The results were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach and using systems theory and empowerment. The findings were consistent with existing research, that interaction is very important for achieving positive effects that lead to a better quality of life for the individual. Further clarifies both our study and other research that the individual should be included as a resource in the collaborative process, to achieve the effects of self-determination, which can provide a social security.

Att tygla sin bipolaritet: En kvalitativ studie om hur diagnosen bipolär sjukdom kan påverka livet, och vilka strategier man kan använda för att hantera sjukdomen.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study was to examine how integrity and self-determination is conceived by care assistants regarding older care takers with a problematic alcohol consumption, and if it affects their care provided. Qualitative semi-structured interviews, carried out with home care assistants (n=4) and analyzed hermeneutically with theories of power and discretion, showed that self-determination, as described by The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, is fulfilled only under certain conditions in the home care assistant’s interpretation. We also found a lack of guidelines and routines concerning problematic alcohol consumption among older care takers. Our results showed that home care assistants made individual assessments in their work with older care takers with problematic alcohol consumption actualizing a difficult ethical dilemma between neglect and paternalism. These ethical issues visualize power relationships where home care assistants have the prerogative to decide in relation to the care takers, where paternalism is a potential risk factor. Clear guidelines regarding the purchase of alcohol to older care takers with problematic alcohol consumption may contribute to home care assistants working more uniformly which leads to a higher state of legal security for the care takers.

"It´s better to die than to lose one´s autonomy": en kunskapsöversikt över äldres autonomi i äldreomsorgen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature overview was to map out the factors that can help older people feel autonomy even though they are dependent on others. Based on the selected research literature, we focused on three themes; the informal and formal caregivers importance, choice/participation and quality of life. The results have shown that booth informal and formal caregivers have a significant impact on older people´s experience of autonomy. Elderly people´s autonomy was also affected by physical health and the experience to be acknowledged and have control over their own lives. Both participation, quality of life and being able to remain in their home, was contributing factors to autonomy. Elderly people felt that they were not involved in decision making regarding how help should be organized. The results have been analyzed with the help of power theory and ageism.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

After the honor killings of Fadime and Pela, an extensively discussion started in the media, debating honor-related violence and oppression. This debate also made us, the authours of this paper, to pay attention to the problem. As a professional in social work, there are several good points to be made by having an in-depth knowledge in the field, both to discover individuals exposed to honor-related violence and to be able to protect them. The study was conducted by four qualitative interviews with professionals in social work with a professional experience of honor-related problems. Through the interviews, the social worker's view of honor problems emerged. The overall aim of this paper was to analyze how professional social workers relate to the phenomenon of honor-related violence, and how the problems are made visible. A second aim was to show how social services can protect individuals exposed to honor-related violence based on current legislation. Our results demonstrate that the professionals' knowledge is critical to whether honor contexts are discovered and for its continuing work on these cases.

    Abstract [en]

In association with the influx of refugees into Sweden, it has been noticed that the reception system of unaccompanied children is characterized by various deficiencies. The purpose of this study is to examine, from a staff perspective, how the reception system within the Swedish social services works, and what improvements are requested. This has been studied and analysed through utilising a child-perspective theory that embodies a part of childhood sociology. Four interviews with social workers show perceptions of the reception system as generally underperforming, although improvements at various levels are perceived achievable. The result also highlights requests for a better interaction among authorities, alongside an enhanced top-management commitment. Moreover, the staff expressed the need of more time and resources in order to carry out thorough investigations based on the child's best interests, in which the child's rights are safeguarded. Besides, a more customised method and clearer guidelines were demanded, where the children are given equal opportunities while taking their individual needs into account. For the future, a request for a better preparation and broaden knowledge was highlighted, which would enable a higher quality of reception’s performance in spite of external circumstances.

Consequences of being a stress resilient child2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Aim;

    The aim of this study is to increase our knowledge of stress resilience children coming from backgrounds of substance abuse and to look at what consequences they may encounter, for not being able to express their emotions and deal with happenings experienced in their upbringing. Method;

A qualitative approach has been used with e-mail interviews to collect our material, with young adults whom see themselves as having a history of alcoholism in the nearest family when growing up and despite this managed well in life.

    Result:

We have concluded that resiliency is a way of coping with stressful situations. It is a way of repressing emotions when the emotions become too unbearable. When repressing the emotions you are denying the self the right to development, the right to exist as a person. And this leads to co-dependency.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what approach schools and social services adopt

towards students who are absent from middle- and high school under long periods, to examine

the distribution of responsibilities between them and to assess the collaboration between the

agencies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five personnel from school health

teams, and one from social services. The theories that were used was systems theory, labelling

theory and empowerment. We found that both schools and social services provided

counselling opportunities and sought to establish communication between the student and

parent(s). However, while part of the schools response was to adjust the schooling plan, social

services focused on mapping the individual

’s network and presented alternatives such as

temporary foster placement. The cooperation between schools and social services is perceived

differently between respondents. We conclude that a working method is needed to facilitate

cooperation between schools and social services to ensure efficient deployment of their

    assistance for students and parents.

Honour Culture: The thoughts and experiences of four young men, who have lived in a residential care home for unaccompanied children2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study that explores the thoughts and experiences of honour culture of young men who have previously been living in a residential care home for unaccompanied children. The data was collected through four semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The social constructionist theory was used together with previous research in order to analyse the results. The results of this study show that the informants highly associate honour culture with women, and therefore feel burdened with the fact that they are expected to guard females both in and outside their own families. Results also show that males are subjected to honour based oppression in different forms. Furthermore, it was found that honour culture is connected to shame and a fear of being ostracized from the family or the community.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Collaboration in BoDa-units. A qualitative study about collaboration regarding people with disabilities.

The purpose of this thesis was to internally examine the cooperation between different professions in municipal BoDa-units. By doing a qualitative study using focus-group-interviews in three municipalities, we were able to examine the personnel’s experience of cooperation issues and opportunities in BoDa-units. We have also examined why municipals have introduced BoDa-units and how they work. Those BoDa-units we have examined addresses persons who are severely mentally disabled and with multiple disabilities but also to persons with autism and disruptive behaviour. The personnel working with the users of these services works both at the home with special services and at the daily activity. The unit operations managers are responsible for the whole BoDa-unit. The results have been analysed through the theoretical starting points of actor network theory and system theory, but also via relevant literature and the LSS-legislation. The result showed that the creations of the BoDa-units are based on a comprehensive view on the individual users’ need of safety, environmental adaptation and a structured way of work. The conclusion of this study is that the co-operation benefits exceed the disadvantages and that the prospects for the BoDa-units are both positive and negative depending on which target group it addresses.

Deep down, maybe she wanted it

An essay based on qualitative focus group interviews with adolescents in a Swedish high school, regarding their thoughts on and constructions of perpetrators and victims of sexual offenses. The aim of our study was to examine adolescents perceptions and constructions of perpetrators and victims of sexual offenses from a gender perspective. We conducted three focus group interviews with a total of 18 adolescents between the age of 16 and 19. The adolescents consistently referred to perpetrators as men and generally had difficulties seeing women as perpetrators of sexual offenses. Male offenders were primarily depicted as alpha males who commit sexual offenses in order to get a sexual release, while female offenders were primarily depicted as sick, strange and without self-respect. The adolescents more easily perceived women as victims of sexual offenses, still, some circumstances seemed to affect the possibility for a woman to be viewed as an ideal victim, in a negative way. Being a woman subjected to a sexual offense was thought to result in mental issues and breached sexuality, while men were thought not to be as affected by sexual abuse. The adolescents believed that women who reported abuse risked being looked at as sluts and as tainted while men who reported abuse where at risk of being considered as unmanly and as homosexuals.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

The purpose of the study was to gain knowledge about how social workers perceive the underlying factors that may be behind clients’ need of social assistance for longer periods. A qualitative approach has been used and six telephone interviews with social workers from two different municipalities in Stockholm have been performed. The results show that the social workers’ views are that individuals are in need of social assistance because they are unemployed and because they can not speak Swedish, but it also depends on the client's relationship to the social worker and the municipality's employee turnover. The social services can help to prevent clients from being trapped in a long term need of social assistance, for example by clarifying the municipal rules and regulations, by developing and introducing new activities in the municipality and / or by reducing employee turnover and workload.

Keywords: social worker, social assistance, unemployment

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the existing types of working methods and approaches used by professionals on clients with suicidal thoughts. Through interviews with five professionals who meet clients with suicidal thoughts, data were collected for a qualitative study. The result suggested that the working methods used by these professionals are mapping based on therapy talk, evaluation forms, talks and follow-ups. The professionals treat their clients by listening, having the courage to ask questions about suicide, to allow the client to narrate their story and to be there for the client. The results are expected to contribute to increasing our knowledge as social workers on working methods and approaches towards clients with suicidal thoughts. Our choice was based on the lack of specific training on that field within the study program in social work.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Sibling experiences – to grow up with a sibling with Asperger syndromAuthors: Anna-Lena Hedlund and Monica OlofssonKey words: Asperger, siblings, relations, support

To grow up with a sibling diagnosed with Asperger syndrome may differ from what is considered as normal. It can be challenging, but also instructive in some ways. This study examines how it is experienced by the siblings with no diagnosis. The aim is also to investigate how many of them who acquired some kind of support or, if not, would have wished that.Qualitative data are collected by means of five interviews with non-diagnosed siblings. The interview persons are in the age range of 16 to 27 and of both sexes. The result of the study demonstrates that it is an exception rather than a rule that siblings are asked if they are in need of support or information from BUP or school. Most of them had managed it fine by themselves and by support from the family, but not all families have that kind of awareness in their relations. The respondents mainly did not experience many problems for themselves, they were more worried about the sibling’s problems and how they would manage their lives in the future.

Autistiska barns situation i särskolan, utifrån lärares perspektiv2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Longitudinal Analysis of Links Between Bullying Victimization and Psychosomatic Maladjustment in Swedish Schoolchildren2018In: Journal of School Violence, ISSN 1538-8220, E-ISSN 1538-8239, Vol. 17, no 1, p. 86-98Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cross-sectional studies of bullying mask variability in categories of and persistence of bullying victimization. Longitudinal, individual-level data offers a greater insight into schoolchildren’s psychosomatic maladjustment as a consequence of bullying. Swedish schoolchildren (n = 3,349), with unique identifiers, in 44 schools (4th–9th grade), answered a questionnaire at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Longitudinal trends for nonvictims (88%), ceased victims (4.7%), new victims (5.7%), and continuing victims (1.6%) revealed that new victims had the largest decrease in well-being; continuing victims had a smaller though not significant decrease; while ceased victims showed a small, (nonsignificant) increase in well-being over the measurement period. It was also discovered that children not bullied at baseline but bullied subsequently, differed, at baseline, from their never-bullied peers through lower levels of overall well-being. It is argued that this finding has implications for prevention strategies.

    Abstract [en]

Elderly people’s participation and involvement in elderly care are according to the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs inadequate. To increase elderly people’s participation, a tool for documentation for implementation was made. In this study we ask ourselves: How does staff experience elderly people’s participation in nursing homes and which function does the documentation for implementation have on elderly people’s participation? On the basis of six interviews with staff in nursing homes the result shows that staff experience that elderly people’s participation is in progress and is very important in elderly care. The staff’s view on the documentation for implementation is that it is complicated. However, they feel that it is a good tool for increasing elderly people’s participation. We argue that elderly people’s involvement can be advantaged or disadvantaged by: How the employee acts and works, if the elderly are committed and if they can be involved. We argue that the documentation for implementation, as a tool for elderly people’s participation, give positive results. Factors that can promote or limit the participation in the documentation for implementation are: the contact person and elderly and employees comprehension about the questions and the process.

Engaging men and boys in the struggle to end violence against women: A study on how men and boys are engaged in the issue of violence against women in Mauritius2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis looked deeper into the subject of engaging men and boys in the issue of violence against women in Mauritius. The aim of the study was to investigate what methods were used to engage men and boys in the subject, as well as the challenges faced when working to engage men and boys in the subject of violence against women, and lastly if there is any new innovative strategies that could develop the area of engaging men and boys towards decreasing violence against women. The theory used in this study was hegemonic masculinity by Connell. We used abductive thematic network analysis (ATNA) as our method and analysis. In addition we also used Atlas.ti-7, a computerized data analysis tool, to categorize the data and to further create the themes and networks between them. Our results showed that one of the methods that were frequently used by the organizations was to empower men to make a change in their own life, and further becoming the change in society themselves. Another method used by some of the organizations was to create an alternative role of what masculinity is in order to change the stereotypical macho dominant man which includes being aggressive as one of the characteristics, for instance. Some of the difficulties faced by the organizations was the challenge of actually recruiting men and boys to the workshops, but also recruiting male facilitators as employees. Some of the innovative ideas put forward by the interviewees, was to engage boys at school more than what is done now, also to work with corporations and companies and their employees in the issues of violence against women.

    Abstract

    Summary

”Good quality in elderly care, fine words on paper or a reality?” – by Eva Birgersson and Marielle Holmgren

The purpose of this paper was to follow two local nursing homes to study how the performance criteria of the Social Services Act and the National Board of Health recommendations were achieved in the day to day care for the patient. The foundations for this paper were qualitative interviews with ten care providers. The scientific philosophical disposition was hermeneutic, which means that researchers try to interpret and understand the meaning of a response to a question. The results of these interviews were analyzed using previous research and Antonovsky´s theory, sense of coherence (SOC).

The results of the interviews revealed the differences in the comprehension between the unit managers and their employees with regard to the National Board of Health recommendations, and, what should be achieved under the Social Services Law, for their patients for a good quality. One conclusion of this paper also shows that there are different experiences of quality assurance of activities among employees, and that care providers require a more user friendly material to evaluate and report quality. This paper is also evidence that care providers wish to be more involved in quality work with their patients.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate from a gender perspective how two HVB-accommodations for unaccompanied refugee children were working with equality. The research was made by four semi structured interviews with employees at HVB-accommodations for unaccompanied girls and boys between the ages of 14 to 17. From each home there were one female and one male selected for the interviews. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The material was analyzed using social constructivist theory and gender perspectives. The result indicates how stereotypical ideas’ regarding gender was constructed in the social work with the unaccompanied children. Hence, the study demonstrates a need of increased education for the employees together with a need for the accommodations to adjust in order to fulfill the specific needs which unaccompanied children have not least as regarding equality and gender.

socialtjänst gällande våld i nära relationer.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine and compare how professionals in four groups in Human Services perceive their possibilities to see, understand and help children who experience parental conflicts due to separation. A qualitative method has been used, where the selection of participants was made through appropriate sampling. The theoretical basis applied involves professional theory with the concepts jurisdiction and scope for action, as well as new institutional theory including the concept organizational field. Based on these theories and concepts we have examined and compared how the professionals from four occuapational groups; school counselor, school psychologist, coordinator and secretary of family law, individually and in comparison with each other, describe their work with this type of problems and how they act in meetings with children. The results show that the professionals have the experience that children may feel bad about the conflict between their parents in connection with separation. In some cases, and to a varying extent, this may be expressed in meetings with the professional groups in the study. The reactions of the children highlighted in the study are bad mood, behavioral problems, difficulty to concentrate and deteriorating school performance. The professionals from the different professional groups, depending on their jurisdiction and scope for action, have different abilities to help the children showing these reactions.

Maintaining professional integrity: experiences of case workers performing the assessments that determine children’s access to personal assistance2018In: Disability & Society, ISSN 0968-7599, E-ISSN 1360-0508, Vol. 33, no 6, p. 909-931Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study explores Swedish case workers experiences of decision making regarding disabled children's right to obtain assistance in their everyday life whereby they can live independently in the community. Data collection included seven focus-group interviews and 11 complementary individual interviews with case workers from different agencies responsible for decisions regardig access to personal assistance. Grounded theory methodology was used. Compromised professional integrity under shifting conditions emerged as a main concern and maintaing professional integrity was used as an approach to resolve it. The case workers are maintaining professional integrity by applying different strategies; struggling with division of responsibility, bureaucratizig, and justifying and protecting. The results indicate that present application of assessment criteria in combination with the utilization of precedent rulings has made it difficult for the case workers to make decisions that provide children access to assistance. Current practice raises questions about the case workers perspectives of professionalism.

Assisted normality - a grounded theory of adolescent's experiences of living with personal assistance2016In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 38, no 11, p. 1053-1062Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore how adolescents with disabilities experience everyday life with personal assistants.

Method: In this qualitative study, individual interviews were conducted at 35 occasions with 16 Swedish adolescents with disabilities, in the ages 16-21. Data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology.

Results: The adolescents' main concern was to achieve normality, which is about doing rather than being normal. They try to resolve this by assisted normality utilizing personal assistance. Assisted normality can be obtained by the existing relationship, the cooperation between the assistant and the adolescent and the situational placement of the assistant. Normality is obstructed by physical, social and psychological barriers.

Conclusion: This study is from the adolescents' perspective and has implications for understanding the value of having access to personal assistance in order to achieve assisted normality and enable social interaction in everyday life. Implications for Rehabilitation Access to personal assistance is important to enable social interaction in everyday life. A good and functional relationship is enabled through the existing relation, co-operation and situational placement of the assistant. If the assistant is not properly sensitized, young people risk turning into objects of care. Access to personal assistants cannot compensate for disabling barriers in the society as for example lack of acceptance.

Elusive Participation – Social Workers’ Experience of the Participation of Children with Disabilities in LSS Assessments2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, no 1, p. 38-48Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of Swedish social workers’ experience of disabled children’s participation, to discover in what ways their knowledge about impairment and disability, combined with legal literacy and local context influence children’s participation in formal meetings and decision making. Seven focus-group interviews were conducted with 35 municipal social workers from communities in different parts of Sweden. The phenomenological analysis resulted in the overarching theme of elusive participation, in which participation was described as difficult to grasp both in relation to what was supposed to be achieved and what it was meant to result in. Elusive participation entailed a discrepancy between policy and practice, norms and perception of normality, conflicting perspectives and needs, judgment of children’s abilities. These findings underline the importance of creating safe spaces in which social workers have the opportunity for critical reflections and shared discussions about social work practice.

Reluctant participation -€“ the experiences of adolescents with disabilities of meetings with social workers regarding their right to receive personal assistance [Motvilligt deltagande–erfarenheter hos ungdomar med funktionshinder av möten med LSS-handläggare gällande deras rätt till personlig assistans]2017In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 20, no 4, p. 509-521Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the experiences of adolescents with disabilities concerning meetings that affect their possibility to receive personal assistance in Sweden. Qualitative inductive content analysis was used to describe their experiences. Overall adolescents were found to be reluctant to participate in meetings. Two main approaches could be discerned – taking part and taking part by proxy. The adolescents who took part in meetings tried to adapt their self-presentation to fit with the social workers’ requirements by presenting their worst self, giving requested information, using support and raising their voices. The adolescents who choose to participate by proxy were either being involved or not being involved. Being involved implied involvement before and/or after the meeting. The meaning of participants’ strategies was examined through a social constructivist lens. The results indicate that ‘performing disability’ during the meetings is a prerequisite for obtaining personal assistance. In its current form adolescents’ participation is reduced to tokenism and this raises questions about how to implement a child perspective.
