    Abstract [en]

    The latest seismic data and improved information about the subglacial bedrock relief are used in this study to estimate the sediment and crustal thickness under the Antarctic continent. Since large parts of Antarctica are not yet covered by seismic surveys, the gravity and crustal structure models are used to interpolate the Moho information where seismic data are missing. The gravity information is also extended offshore to detect the Moho under continental margins and neighboring oceanic crust. The processing strategy involves the solution to the Vening Meinesz-Moritz’s inverse problem of isostasy constrained on seismic data. A comparison of our new results with existing studies indicates a substantial improvement in the sediment and crustal models. The seismic data analysis shows significant sediment accumulations in Antarctica, with broad sedimentary basins. According to our result, the maximum sediment thickness in Antarctica is about 15 km under Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. The Moho relief closely resembles major geological and tectonic features. A rather thick continental crust of East Antarctic Craton is separated from a complex geological/tectonic structure of West Antarctica by the Transantarctic Mountains. The average Moho depth of 34.1 km under the Antarctic continent slightly differs from previous estimates. A maximum Moho deepening of 58.2 km under the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains in East Antarctica confirmed the presence of deep and compact orogenic roots. Another large Moho depth in East Antarctica is detected under Dronning Maud Land with two orogenic roots under Wohlthat Massif (48–50 km) and the Kottas Mountains (48–50 km) that are separated by a relatively thin crust along Jutulstraumen Rift. The Moho depth under central parts of the Transantarctic Mountains reaches 46 km. The maximum Moho deepening (34–38 km) in West Antarctica is under the Antarctic Peninsula. The Moho depth minima in East Antarctica are found under the Lambert Trench (24–28 km), while in West Antarctica the Moho depth minima are along the West Antarctic Rift System under the Bentley depression (20–22 km) and Ross Sea Ice Shelf (16–24 km). The gravimetric result confirmed a maximum extension of the Antarctic continental margins under the Ross Sea Embayment and the Weddell Sea Embayment with an extremely thin continental crust (10–20 km).

    Med e-handelns snabba expansion har även returerna ökat, returvolymen inom e-handel kan vara så hög som 50% (Dissanayake och Singh, 2007). Returer kostar inte bara pengar utan påverkar även miljön i form av bl.a. ökade transporter. De vanligaste returorsakerna inom modebranschen är storlek och passform vilket kan härledas till bristande produktinformation som t.ex. undermåliga storleksguider. Tidigare forskning om produktinformation har oftast berört vikten av produktinformation vid konsumentköp samt vilka egenskaper i produktinformationen som är viktiga. (Chiu et al, 2014; Manvai och Venkataram, 2005; Markopoulos, Arin och Ungar, 2016) Syftet med denna fallstudie är att undersöka hur produktinformationen påverkar antalet produktreturer hos e-handelsföretag i modebranschen. Studiens frågeställningar berör hur fallföretagen arbetar med produktinformation och om det har påverkat returvolymen samt fallföretagens hållbarhetsarbete. Studien är baserad på en kvalitativ metod och med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer med tre fallföretag besvaras studiens syfte och frågeställningar. Fallföretagen i denna studie arbetar med försäljning inom modebranschen, två av dessa är stora företag och har både fysiska butiker och e-handel. Det tredje fallföretaget är ett mindre företag som enbart har e-handel. Studien visar att fallföretagen får samma gynnsamma effekt av arbetet med produktinformation även om drivkraften bakom arbetet är olika. Studien visar även att produktinformationen kan ses som en kanal för att effektivt förmedla hållbarhetsarbete till kunderna. Studien bidrar med bredare kunskap om produktinformation samt att studien kan ligga till grund för vidare forskning om produktinformationens inverkan på returer. Studien styrker även vissa delar av tidigare forskning inom returer i modebranschen.

    Robotics is moving towards real world applications, beyond the well-structured environment of industrial robotics. In the world of assistant robots and medical robots, Human-Robot Interaction is essential. Also in emerging industrial scenarios there is a need of the human to be closely included in the loop. The companies are confronted with the lack of guidelines and of standards on how the higher features of HRI may be safely incorporated. Although the scientific research is burgeoning and worthy of praise, it is clear that its results are scattered and not capable of giving a clear input to be easily taken up by companies and standardization organizations like ISO and IEC. The workshop aims at the integration of empirical findings into complex real world robot systems by focusing on three typical sectors (industrial, service and medical) to develop systematic approaches to benchmark and evaluate experimental systems so that normative results can be realized rapidly. The present workshop focuses on bringing together scientists, representative of robotics companies and of standardization working groups to foster discussion in the definition of experimental scenarios and protocols in HRI, so to be able to prime real world set-ups and help realize the robotic products of the future.

    Abstract [en]

    When modeling a linear system in a parametric way, one needs to deal with (i) model structure selection, (ii) model order selection as well as (iii) an accurate fit of the model. The most popular model structure for linear systems has a rational form which reveals crucial physical information and insight due to the accessibility of poles and zeros. In the model order selection step, one needs to specify the number of poles and zeros in the model. Automated model order selectors like Akaikeʼs Information Criterion (AIC) and the Minimum Description Length (MDL) are popular choices. A large model order in combination with poles and zeros lying closer to each other in frequency than the frequency resolution indicates that the modeled system exhibits some fractional behavior. Classical integer order techniques cannot handle this fractional behavior due to the fact that the poles and zeros are lying to close to each other to be resolvable and not enough data is available for the classical integer order identification procedure. In this paper, we study the use of fractional order poles and zeros and introduce a fully automated algorithm which (i) estimates a large integer order model, (ii) detects the fractional behavior, and (iii) identifies a fractional order system.

    Abstract [en]

    The general approach for modeling systems assumes that the measured signals are (weakly) stationary, i.e., the power spectrum is time invariant. However, the stationarity assumption is violated when: 1) transient effects due to experimental conditions are dominant; 2) data are missing due to, for instance, sensor failure; or 3) the amplitude of the excitation signals smoothly varies over time due to, for instance, actuator problems. Although different methods exist to deal with each of these nonstationary effects specifically, no unified approach is available. In this paper, a new and general technique is presented to handle nonstationary effects, based on processing overlapping subrecords of the measured data. The proposed method is a simple preprocessing step where the user does not need to specify which nonstationary effect is present, nor the time interval where the nonstationary effect appears. The merits of the proposed approach are demonstrated on an operational wireless system suffering from interrupted link effects.

    Abstract [en]

    The postprocessing of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to study the brain functions deals mainly with two objectives: signal detection and extraction of the haemodynamic response. Signal detection consists of exploring and detecting those areas of the brain that are triggered due to an external stimulus. Extraction of the haemodynamic response deals with describing and measuring the physiological process of activated regions in the brain due to stimulus. The haemodynamic response represents the change in oxygen levels since the brain functions require more glucose and oxygen upon stimulus that implies a change in blood flow. In the literature, different approaches to estimate and model the haemodynamic response have been proposed. These approaches can be discriminated in model structures that either provide a proper representation of the obtained measurements but provide no or a limited amount of physiological information, or provide physiological insight but lacks a proper fit to the data. In this paper, a novel model structure is studied for describing the haemodynamics in fMRI measurements: fractional models. We show that these models are flexible enough to describe the gathered data with the additional merit of providing physiological information.

    Abstract [en]

     

    This thesis work is the study of the effect of an aluminium foil on the losses that produced by a radiator, situated under a window, through the wall behind it. The reason behind this topic is due to the energy problem and the different goals that governments have set up to try to reduce the use of energy. For example, more specifically a Swedish national goal is to decrease the energy use of the built stock with 50% by 2050.

     

    For this purpose, an experimental set-up was built in the University of Gävle, Sweden. The arrangement was composed by a radiator and a window facing a climate chamber. A total of twenty-one temperatures and two heat fluxes in the exterior wall were measured in the set-up. Ten different measurement scenarios with different radiator temperature, 40°C, 50°C and 60°C; two different distance between the radiator and the wall, 5 and 9 centimetres and with and without the aluminium foil, were performed.

     

    With the experimental results, a CFD model was validated. Two different models were done, first a 2D model and afterwards a 3D model. For the turbulence, the chosen model was standard k-ε model. There were 54 cases simulated with the 2D model and the 3D model was used just for validation. The cases had different variables such as radiator temperature, outdoor temperature and wall insulation. With these cases, analysis of the effectiveness of the presence of an aluminium foil behind the radiator is performed to evaluate if there is a significant reduction of the losses.

     

    The results showed with both methods that the aluminium foil reduces the losses of the wall behind the radiator. The savings varied depending on the boundary conditions of the case and it were obtained a maximum of 4% and a minimum of 1,3%.

    Huvudsyftet med studien var att utreda och klargöra hur förrättningslantmätaren bör handla när en stiftelse blir sakägare i en lantmäteriförrättning och hur stiftelsen ska behandlas utifrån förrättningslantmätarens undersökningsplikt. Studien hade även två delsyften där det första skulle beskriva och analysera hur stiftelsers föreskrifter kan ändras, medan de andra skulle utreda hur tillsynsmyndigheternas registrering av stiftelser genomförs. Förrättningslantmätare är en yrkesroll inom lantmäterimyndigheten och har till uppgift att handlägga samt besluta i fastighetsbildnings-ärenden. Lantmäterimyndigheten är den myndighet som har till uppgift att ansvara för att en effektiv och rättssäker fastighetsindelning genomförs. En stiftelse är en typ av juridisk person som bildas av en eller flera personer för att verka för ett bestämt ändamål. Stiftelsen ska förvalta en ekonomisk förmögenhet som har avsatts för ett bestämt ändamål, där förvaltningen ska ske över en längre tid. Förmögenheten kan bestå av fast egendom i form av fastigheter.

    Metoder som använts för att besvara studiens syften och forskningsfrågor var en litteraturstudie, en intervjustudie och en fallstudie. Litteraturstudien granskade tidigare forskning inom ämnes-området, lagstiftningen och facklitteratur för att ge en vetenskaplig grund. Intervjustudien genom-fördes för att få en grundlig förståelse för hur tillsynsmyndigheternas och Kammarkollegiets prövningar går till vid ändring av stiftelsers föreskrifter. Fallstudien granskade och jämförde tillsynsmyndigheternas och Kammarkollegiets prövningar vid ändring av stiftelsers föreskrifter, men fallstudien jämförde även vilka dokument tillsynsmyndigheterna kräver in av en stiftelse när den ska registreras. Intervjuer gjordes i fallstudien med samtliga tillsynsmyndigheter för att samla information om hur deras prövningar går till när stiftelser ska registreras i stiftelseregistren.

    Resultatet av litteraturstudien bestod av beskrivningar av förrättningslantmätarens yrkesroll, fastighets-, ägande- och stiftelsebegreppet. Resultatet av intervjustudien visade att de intervjuade tillsynsmyndigheterna och Kammarkollegiet har olika grundliga prövningar vid ändring av stiftelsers föreskrifter. Detta visade även fallstudien samt att tillsynsmyndigheternas prövningar skiljer sig åt vid registrering av en stiftelse. Slutsatsen beskriver hur förrättningslantmätaren ska handla när en stiftelse blir sakägare i en lantmäteriförrättning och hur stiftelsen ska behandlas utifrån förrättningslantmätarens undersökningsplikt. Två mallar finns i slutsatsen som innehåller riktlinjer för hur en kontroll av stiftelsens föreskrifter kan göras för att vara säker på att fastighets-bildningen inte strider mot stiftelsens föreskrifter.

    Governments need to decide how to allocate their public expenditure, which is commonly misconstrued as simply targeting social issues. Most scientific literature highlights that the role of public spending is to enhance social welfare and fight poverty and inequality. Nonetheless, public expenditure also includes spending on environmental issues. This paper analyses relations between public participation, support for public expenditure, and pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) intentions in the English Channel region. An online public survey was developed to investigate public use of the English and French sides and the public's willingness to change their behaviour to better protect the Channel region. The survey was undertaken in the summer of 2014 and was answered by 2000 respondents. The Channel region public is willing to participate more in behaviour that involves direct changes or switches between buying/purchasing choices. In contrast, there is less willingness to engage in pro-environmental behaviour intentions that involve more active engagement activities. French respondents were slightly less inclined to change their consumer behaviour intentions, while women and older people were slightly more likely to do so. This research shows that pro-environmental behaviour could positively affect support for proposed public expenditure on environmental issues.

    Abstract [en]

    This project is mainly focused on the improving and design of the ventilation system of two rooms at different levels of a gym (Friskis and Svettis in Gävle, Sweden) to reduce the  concentration to never be higher than 1000 ppm.

    For this purpose, several field measurements were performed in different locations and situations. Two main measurements were necessary. On one hand, the  level in different parts of the rooms during different activities. On the other hand, the air flow through the inlet and outlet ducts of the ventilation system. It was also important to take into account the indoor temperature and humidity. These measurements were enough to analyze the failures of the system and to recognize the worst points of each room.

    Comparing both rooms, the necessity of changing the ventilation system in one of these rooms was much higher, due to there were measured  values up to 3000 ppm during a typical day in the gym.

    With this information the consequences of high CO2 levels in human people were analyzed. Among various ventilation systems, displacement ventilation system was proposed as the new design. Theoretical calculations were made to reach to the value of 31.8  in the air change rate (ACH), which was the necessary value for the new design to keep the carbon dioxide level under 1000 ppm.

    Abstract [en]

    In this composition, a study of consignment inventory on basis of the factors which are important for implementation and application of consignment inventory are made. Logistics chain from subcontractor to end customer is becoming more complex when the volume of items constantly increases to satisfy the needs of the market. From that perspective, companies had large inventories but today it is a lot of different solutions to streamline inventory management. One way that recently becomes increasingly common is to let the subcontractor fill up the customers stock using different approaches such as VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory). A further step in the evolution can be to make use of consignment inventory where the vendor owns the stock of the customer. Then the material will be the customer’s property when the need arises.

    In order to ascertain whether consignment stocks in general is a good solution, a study has been done to investigate which factors are relevant for the implementation and application of consignment inventory within the industry.

    To find out the importance of the application of consignment inventory have a literature study of relevant theory in the field been done and where also a case study as a research method has been developed. In the case study, a number of companies have been selected with a non probability sampling where a qualitative approach is used to collect data and information. The theory used is based on selected elements in several different areas of logistics. When the interface is many has the following main areas been affected: Supply Chain Management, Lean production, outsourcing, capital binding, Just In Time, synchronization, VMI and distribution. On the basis of these areas has created a model which is then used in the investigation of the various cases.

    In the study has three cases been examined of which only one case are working on consignment inventory, while a case using vendor managed inventory as well as to the third case has ambitious plans to implement a consignment inventory. Background to the choice of cases is to be able to discuss consignment inventory in general.

    The final result is based on a comparison between the theoretical and the empirical investigation. What is revealed by the survey is that combinations of several different factors determine if a consignment is applicable as the logistical goal mix points out. Relevant factors are that the agreements have a good reason, the information exchange works well, capital binding and possibilities to have inventory at the customers plant. Also physical factors such as distance, the products format and distribution is of importance.

    Fossil fuels and non-renewable resources are being replaced with, as modern day society has coined the term, green energy. This movement towards green energy creates a demand for renewable energy resources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. This study used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with Remote Sensing (RS) practices and two weighting systems the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Rank-Order methods for PV site selection. Six multi-criteria models were developed using spatial factors and constraining images to locate potential photovoltaic power plant sites for three settings of fixed axis PV arrays. This analysis was performed at a macro regional scale and further analysis is encouraged for micro site selection.

    Social-Ecological Research has approached the city as a living ecosystem, an approach that really begun with the urban scholars of the early 1900s. But new developments in this line of research started during the 1990s to study various social-ecological relations in a web of life reaching far beyond the built environment of any city. Such research argues that it is in such social-ecological relations where the resilience of cities ultimately rests, for example in a food system consisting of the chain of activities connecting food producing ecosystems, processing, distribution, consump­tion, and waste management, as well as all the associated regulatory institutions and activities. Contrary to popular belief, it is in such social-ecological research traditions, where the most prolific authors on urban resilience are found.

    Jane Jacobs critiqued modernist city planning in the now classic book The Death and Life of Great American Cities(1961). This book is now inspiring an urban renaissance. Jacobs proposed that a city must be understood as a system of organized complexity—in other words, as an ecosystem—and that any intervention in the urban fabric with a lack of such understanding is bound to result in unexpected surprises. Trained in zoology, Jacobs viewed the city much like a coral reef, where co-evolutionary dynamics between the coral organisms (the people) and the coral reef (the built environment) result in the emergence of a socio-spatial logic that can support various kind of functions and opportunities for people.

    First line of urban scholarship based on ecological thought

    Blueprint planning based on ideals such as Le Corbusier’s “The Shining City,” or Sir Ebenezer Howard’s “The Garden City,” Jacobs argued, is likely to fail since it lacks the critical understanding of the city as a complex socio-spatial system. Spatial morphology thinking (Hillier and Hanson, 1984) provided a precision and an analytical depth to the insights of Jane Jacobs. Density, accessibility and diversity are outlined as the main features of spatial capital for people in cities (Marcus, 2010), which are akin to insights in ecosystem ecology, where species diversity, species abundance and ecological connectivity are critical features.

     The aim of this paper is to explore how children learn to form new relationships with nature. It draws on a longitudinal case study of children participating in a stewardship project involving the conservation of salamanders during the school day in Stockholm, Sweden. The qualitative method includes two waves of data collection: when a group of 10-year-old children participated in the project (2015) and 2 years after they participated (2017). We conducted 49 interviews with children as well as using participant observations and questionnaires. We found indications that children developed sympathy for salamanders and increased concern and care for nature, and that such relationships persisted 2 years after participation. Our rich qualitative data suggest that whole situations of sufficient unpredictability triggering free exploration of the area, direct sensory contact and significant experiences of interacting with a species were important for children’s development of affective relationships  with the salamander species and with nature in an open-ended sense. Saving the lives of trapped animals enabled direct sensory interaction, feedback, increased understanding, and development of new skills for dynamically exploring further ways of saving species in an interactive process experienced as deeply meaningful, enjoyable and connecting. The behavioral setting instilled a sense of pride and commitment, and the high degree of responsibility given to the children while exploring the habitat during authentic situations enriched children’s enjoyment. The study has implications for the design of education programs that aim to connect children with nature and for a child-sensitive urban policy that supports authentic nature situations in close spatial proximity to preschools and schools.

    Employing a sort of a cyborg worldview—meaning a living system of intertwined human and machine parts—the Smart City system is seen as contributing to urban sustainability with the basic assumption that ‘the Internet of Things’ serves social and public ends. These ends include economic benefits, improving efficiency and quality of life for people by optimizing control of infrastructures. In this view, urban residents are at the center of a city’s sustainability transformation, while at the same time serving as “data sources”, providing urban planners (central controllers of the cyborg) various sources of information about human behavior that may or may not be exploited. While various efficiency measures often are beneficial for society, at least in the short term, the discussions of resilience of such a cyborg is mostly entirely avoided.

    Global urbanization and food production are in direct competition for land. This paper carries outa critical review of how displacing crop production from urban and peri-urban land to other areas– because of issues related to soil quality – will demand a substantially larger proportion of theEarth’s terrestrial land surface than the surface area lost to urban encroachment. Such relationshipsmay trigger further distancing effects and unfair social-ecological teleconnections. It risks also settingin motion amplifying effects within the Earth System. In combination, such multiple stressors set thescene for food riots in cities of the Global South. Our review identifies viable leverage points on whichto act in order to navigate urban expansion away from fertile croplands. We first elaborate on thepolitical complexities in declaring urban and peri-urban lands with fertile soils as one global commons.We find that the combination of an advisory global policy aligned with regional policies enablingrobust common properties rights for bottom-up actors and movements in urban and peri-urbanagriculture (UPA) as multi-level leverage places to intervene. To substantiate the ability of aligningglobal advisory policy with regional planning, we review both past and contemporary examples whereempowering local social-ecological UPA practices and circular economies have had a stimulatingeffect on urban resilience and helped preserve, restore, and maintain urban lands with healthy soils.

    Companies today are becoming more and more resource-promoting. A way for companies to become more effective with their resources is Lean Production, which is a strategic method that involves eliminating waste. Value stream mapping is a tool that can be used to get a clearer picture of reality and visualize where the problem lies. When the analysis is done, it will often show a machine or station that is slowing down production. Stations like that are called ”bottlenecks”.

    The purpose with this study is to form a methodology for analysis and efficiency of material flows based on bottleneck theory and lean production. The methodology will be tested on Företag AB:s filial.

    The methodology was worked out from literature studies. It consists of two main steps, status report and analyzing discussion. These two steps is supported by different factors within lean production and bottleneck theory. The methodology is applied on our business case and showed to be a structured way to study the current state of production and to discuss improvements.

    Literature studies has been used to gather theoretical knowledge. Within the company interviews and observations were conducted with operators and executives who was involved with the product flow that was investigated, SK23DF.

    Företag AB:s filial works with 150 different types of steel with about 3000 different products. The production flow is also forecast-controlled and intersecting and it is a massive under-taking to streamline these in the best way possible. Conclusions reached is that the staff's current consensus for efficient production is an obstacle to this. The staff should be trained to get a bigger picture of the whole, thus giving them better prospects for change and improvement. All research points to the importance of fully understanding the current situation, by everyone within the organization. This is the key to succeed with change management at streamlining flows.

    The distinction between innovative and functional products have for more than a decade been central to our understanding of how to design appropriate supply chains. However, the distinction between the two types of products, and the associated "optimal" supply chain, are blurring, as high competition forces commodity producers to move up the value chain and increase the innovative content of their products. The purpose of this paper is to use a single case study to test whether established supply chain models can be applied to an innovative commodity producer. The paper finds that although some established model still have merits, a supply chain strategy cannot only be based on product characteristics. Factors such ease of transport and uncertainties in materials supply needs to be taken into account and an effective supply chain may involve utilising decoupling point to combine the benefits of both efficient and responsive supply chains.

    The mandate of the International Commission on Biological Effects of Noise (ICBEN) is to promote a high level of scientific research concerning all aspects of noise-induced effects on human beings and animals. In this review, ICBEN team chairs and co-chairs summarize relevant findings, publications, developments, and policies related to the biological effects of noise, with a focus on the period 2011-2014 and for the following topics: Noise-induced hearing loss; nonauditory effects of noise; effects of noise on performance and behavior; effects of noise on sleep; community response to noise; and interactions with other agents and contextual factors. Occupational settings and transport have been identified as the most prominent sources of noise that affect health. These reviews demonstrate that noise is a prevalent and often underestimated threat for both auditory and nonauditory health and that strategies for the prevention of noise and its associated negative health consequences are needed to promote public health.

    To enable demonstration of knife changes in a wood chipper, a demonstration device for this purpose is needed. The demonstration device will only be made in one copy, therefore this work was focused on product development for one piece production. Growing competition among product development companies, along with the fact that the whole development cost will be carried by only one product leads to high demands for reduced development lead times. To meet these requirements a work model was developed to improve the efficiency at the design stage. The model was then applied in the process of developing the demonstration device. The design and content of the work model is based on relevant research literature and is defined in several steps as the feasibility study phase, design phase and finishing phase.

    Customer requirements were treated with the method house of quality, which produced measurable criteria to be used in the design phase. By maintaining a customer contact throughout the whole design process, for instance presentation of a concept model, a flexibility to handle previously unknown or vague demands and requirements was obtained. Based on the work model the concept was divided into a hierarchical structure with modules to create a better overview and to simplify the design process. Through the application of mechanical and strength theory in the design while designing the parts of the demonstration device, the prescribed requirements for stability and security was met. By performing finite element analysis the concept's structural elements was analyzed and the chipper disc was optimized with regard to weight and material stress.

    The work has resulted in a portable demonstration device which contains all the functions required to demonstrate knife changes. The deflection of the frame and chipper disc is well below the defined values for stability. The chipper disc weight was reduced by 29 percent compared to the original concept, which means less force is required to rotate the chipper disc between different positions. What could be observed regarding the work model is that the individual modules affected each other, this was not taken into account during the development of the model. An analysis of how the modules can affect each other should therefore be performed early in the modularization phase. The conclusion, in addition to this, is that the work model is proven to work well to deal with the implied uncertainties of one piece product development.

    The number of Internet of Things applications for Wireless Sensor Networks is increasing every year due to the emerging of new brands such as Big Data and Industry 4.0. With the rise of new technologies related to these fields, new opportunities have become possible with a reasonable cost, but the requirements of WSNs still being the same, where energy efficiency, robustness, scalability and others must be accomplished. The commercial hardware developed by companies can be configured through different programs to be compatible among them, taking into account multiple variables, protocols, mechanisms and options provided by new solutions. Therefore, the configuration of different devices and choosing the optimum configuration can become quite challenging due to the number of paths. In this thesis, the configuration of commercial devices provided is carried out to be able to apply this hardware in different Internet of Things applications for Wireless Sensor Networks. Transceivers, sensors of temperature, relative humidity and CO2, a gateway, and different development kits are provided on this work, where the selection of the software to set these devices is made. Repeaters are configured to be compatible with the sensors and perform under the TDMA protocol and the request-response pattern, which synchronize the communication on the network, and under the flooding mechanism, which allows to route packets through the nodes due to the short range of RF low power technologies. The connection between the WSN and the Internet is made through the GW, which is also connected to the WSN, under the TCP/IP protocol, which is configured to provide Message Queue Telemetry Transport and SecureSHell services to access the GW remotely through the Internet and send requests to the WSN automatically. Node-Red is the programming tool installed upon the GW to implement data processing, storage and visualization, via the JavaScript programming language, where the user can deploy the data, which is stored in a CSV file, to make an analysis and visualize the data and the status of the network through a live data dashboard. Finally, an experiment is carried out over the HiG university where sensors are placed to measure different halls of the university and integrate an Internet of Things application for a Wireless Sensor Network. Due to the followed process, we have been able to measure data of temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration levels, creating a WSN, where this data has been saved in a connected USB to the gateway. Having a performance of 90% of messages received by the GW, and we have also been able to connect the GW to the Internet, creating a system that can be accessed remotely via the MQTT broker and providing different services such as data visualization.

    Renewable energies, and among them solar photovoltaics, are becoming more important in the last years due to the lack of fossil fuels and the environmental impact of them. PV installed capacity is increasing over and over in some countries and the prices of the installation are decreasing while the prices of the electricity are predicted to increase. Electricity use in buildings account for an important part of all electricity use in the world. This two facts make the PV installation in the rooftops of buildings a good opportunity to reduce the purchase of electricity from the grid.

     

    The aim of the thesis is to analyze the profitability and the environmental impact (when using a hot water accumulator) of a PV system with different storage systems placed in the rooftop of two dwellings located in Gävle (Sweden). The storage systems can be either batteries or hot water accumulators. The purpose of the storage system is to increase the self-consumption rate of the PV system and to save the highest amount of money possible. It is also studied the difference of installing PbA and Li-ion batteries, and the reliability of the data used in the simulation of the alternative systems with the help of the software PVsyst.

     

    Results show that the profitability of the proposed three alternative PV systems with storage is not higher than the PV system without storage. The reason for this has been found in the low prices of electricity and DH nowadays. Moreover, the impact of decreasing the heating demand from DH network does not benefit the environment, because the electricity has to be produced in power plants that produce more pollutants. It can be said also that the data obtained in PVsyst has been determined reliable and that the difference between the two types of batteries is not conclusive.

     

    It can be concluded that if the cost of the PV systems or the batteries would decrease, the profitability will be higher. Furthermore, the increase in the price of electricity, DH or governmental subsidies would improve the results.

    In the beginning of the 21’st century, the 3rd generation mobile phone systems, 3G, were introduced all around the world. In most countries, spectrum for this technology was allocated through some kind of licensing procedure. In Europe, the prevailing approach was to allocatespectrum through auctions, a process which led to a situation where the European operators found themselves committed to pay a staggering 130Bilion Euros for their 3G licenses.However, in most European countries, the fee was not the only obligation put on thelicensee: A coverage, “roll-out” requirement was in many cases also connected to the license(Northstream, 2002). Typically, these coverage requirements required that the licenseescover a certain area at a certain point in time after that the licenses had been awarded.In order for the regulators to verify that the licensees had met the coverage requirement and,hence, complied with the regulation, a method for coverage verification was needed. Suchmethods have therefore since then been developed by several European regulators (e.g. PTS2004; ECC 2007). In this book chapter we describe some general underlying consideration for the verification of radio coverage in UMTS systems and in particular we describe the Swedishmethodology developed by the Swedish Telecom regulator Post & Telestyrelsen (PTS).

    Abstract [en]

    This study has the objective of identifying the possible environmental constraints that has role for the continuous loss of heathland plant Genista pilosa. The study has assessed different environmental settings where the plant occurs by way of overlaying analysis based on multiple spatial data sets. Thereafter empirical change detection analyses on the land use of the study area have been performed on the GIS environment by combining temporal based remotely sensed spatial data. The result was then analyzed using land use dynamicity model and the rates of change on each land use type are identified. Expansion of human activity, especially the spreading of agricultural land and urbanization, is found to be the most determinant factor for the dramatic loss of the plant. Finally serious attention for the protection of the plant is recommended by mentioning the possible problem that would occur due to a loss of biodiversity.

    Deviant as well as changing auditory distractors interfere with short-term memory. According to the duplex model of auditory distraction, the deviation effect is caused by a shift of attention while the changing-state effect is due to obligatory order processing. This theory predicts that foreknowledge should reduce the deviation effect, but should have no effect on the changing-state effect. We compared the effect of foreknowledge on the two phenomena directly within the same experiment. In a pilot study, specific foreknowledge was impotent in reducing either the changing-state effect or the deviation effect, but it reduced disruption by sentential speech, suggesting that the effects of foreknowledge on auditory distraction may increase with the complexity of the stimulus material. Given the unexpected nature of this finding, we tested whether the same finding would be obtained in (a) a direct preregistered replication in Germany and (b) an additional replication with translated stimulus materials in Sweden.

    Det här examensarbetet omfattar en designprocess innehållande, litteraturstudier, intervjuer, observationer, marknadsundersökning, idégenerering, fokusgrupp, utvärdering och kommunikation. Syftet var att vidareutveckla en luftrenare/luftfuktare kallad Airwasher för företaget Växt och Miljödesign. Växt och Miljödesign är ett litet företag som grundar sin verksamhet på att hyra ut och underhålla växter till andra företag. De hyr även ut sin egen uppfinning Airwasher. Airwasher bygger på växters naturliga luftreningsegenskaper då den med hjälp av en fläkt suger in luft från rummet och med hjälp av ett rör för den ner till rötterna där en reningsprocess sker. Växt och Miljödesign hade inte några önskemål på hur Airwasher skulle vidareutvecklas utan det var upp till mig att hitta områden med utvecklingspotential. För att identifiera vilka problem som fanns med Airwasher gjordes intervjuer och observationer ute hos kunder. Det visade sig att det största problemet var att hitta lämpliga platser för Airwasher eftersom den endast kommer i en golvstående kruka med en diameter på 50 cm. Efter att problemen var identifierade började en idégenereringsprocess med målet att hitta lösningar. Alla lösningar som kom fram till en början skulle inte förbättra produkten nämnvärt men däremot göra den mer komplicerad. Det var inte önskvärt så jag tog ett steg tillbaka och funderade över det verkliga behovet, vilket var att förse kunderna med frisk luft. För att göra det på bästa sätt bestämde jag mig för att fokusera på att utveckla tjänsten Airwasher, inte produkten. Slutresultatet blev en serie med tre olika storlekar anpassade efter Växt och Miljödesigns sortiment av krukor. På så vis skulle man kunna utnyttja alla naturliga platser för blomkrukor och enkelt få frisk luft över hela kontoret. För att bestämma ett formspråk för nya Airwasher samlade jag en fokusgrupp där tre värdeord som Airwasher står för diskuterades fram. Orden som bestämdes var naturlig, diskret och pålitlig. Utifrån dessa följde ett skissarbete, först på papper sedan i 3-dimensionellt medium. De bästa idéerna togs ut för att sedan utvärderas mot samma fokusgrupp. När formen var bestämd valdes lämplig produktionsmetod utifrån Växt och Miljödesigns förutsättningar, vilket var 3D-skrivning. För att hålla sig till värdeorden valdes ett träfärgat filament av sågspån och PLA-plast, vilket passar bra in i krukans naturliga färgpalett.

    Abstract [en]

    Industrial firms experience a strong tension between high demands to outsource manufacturing to low-cost regions and the need to integrate and co-locate key competencies in product development chains. The chapter explains this tension as a dynamic balance between knowledge integration (KI) requirements and capabilities. Three themes are discussed, illustrated by survey data and case studies. First, the chapter argues that parallel investments in manufacturing capability are valuable for meeting KI requirements derived from outsourcing manufacturing. Second, the analysis demonstrates how different kinds of outsourcing strategies shape the KI challenges. Third, the chapter shows how KI challenges turn up as hidden costs, performance trade-offs, or deteriorated cost reduction capability. The chapter claims that the lack of analysis of KI challenges is one explanation why previous studies on outsourcing effects have shown contradictory results. The chapter ends by suggesting the notion of manufacturing absorptive capacity for understanding KI challenges when outsourcing manufacturing.

    Firms are increasingly involving and relying on networks of suppliers and other external partners in their innovation processes. A successful exploitation of suppliers' technology and competencies is however challenging, not least in situations characterised by technological uncertainty. The main purpose of this study is to analyse how supplier innovativeness may be leveraged through internal knowledge integration capabilities in involving suppliers. The analysis is based on a survey of firms in Europe and North America. The study shows that innovative suppliers do contribute to a firm's innovation performance in terms of time–to–market and level of innovation in products/services. The main result is that an internal knowledge integration capability in terms of proficiency in supplier management and cross–functional decision making boosts innovation performance, in particular when technological uncertainty is high.
