Engaging men and boys in the struggle to end violence against women: A study on how men and boys are engaged in the issue of violence against women in Mauritius2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis looked deeper into the subject of engaging men and boys in the issue of violence against women in Mauritius. The aim of the study was to investigate what methods were used to engage men and boys in the subject, as well as the challenges faced when working to engage men and boys in the subject of violence against women, and lastly if there is any new innovative strategies that could develop the area of engaging men and boys towards decreasing violence against women. The theory used in this study was hegemonic masculinity by Connell. We used abductive thematic network analysis (ATNA) as our method and analysis. In addition we also used Atlas.ti-7, a computerized data analysis tool, to categorize the data and to further create the themes and networks between them. Our results showed that one of the methods that were frequently used by the organizations was to empower men to make a change in their own life, and further becoming the change in society themselves. Another method used by some of the organizations was to create an alternative role of what masculinity is in order to change the stereotypical macho dominant man which includes being aggressive as one of the characteristics, for instance. Some of the difficulties faced by the organizations was the challenge of actually recruiting men and boys to the workshops, but also recruiting male facilitators as employees. Some of the innovative ideas put forward by the interviewees, was to engage boys at school more than what is done now, also to work with corporations and companies and their employees in the issues of violence against women.

"Den skamfyllda kvinnosjukdomen": En kvalitativ studie om hur män i massmedia uttrycker sina upplevelser och tankar kring sin ätstörning.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aimed to illustrate how men, that had or have had an eating disorder, expressed their experiences and thoughts about their eating disorders (ED’s), how they got sick, the treatment of their ED’s, and the recovery from the ED’s, in mass media. Method: A qualitative content analysis of mass media products in swedish. Results: The men in the study got an ED due to wanting control, relieve anxiety and/or being affected by ideals. The men felt loneliness and alienation in their ED and in the treatment of ED’s, because ED’s were considered a disease of women. Some men felt better and a sense of freedom after the recovery. Conclusion: Men with ED are an excluded group and they need more room in the society and within the treatment of ED’s.

    Abstract

    Summary

”Good quality in elderly care, fine words on paper or a reality?” – by Eva Birgersson and Marielle Holmgren

The purpose of this paper was to follow two local nursing homes to study how the performance criteria of the Social Services Act and the National Board of Health recommendations were achieved in the day to day care for the patient. The foundations for this paper were qualitative interviews with ten care providers. The scientific philosophical disposition was hermeneutic, which means that researchers try to interpret and understand the meaning of a response to a question. The results of these interviews were analyzed using previous research and Antonovsky´s theory, sense of coherence (SOC).

The results of the interviews revealed the differences in the comprehension between the unit managers and their employees with regard to the National Board of Health recommendations, and, what should be achieved under the Social Services Law, for their patients for a good quality. One conclusion of this paper also shows that there are different experiences of quality assurance of activities among employees, and that care providers require a more user friendly material to evaluate and report quality. This paper is also evidence that care providers wish to be more involved in quality work with their patients.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate from a gender perspective how two HVB-accommodations for unaccompanied refugee children were working with equality. The research was made by four semi structured interviews with employees at HVB-accommodations for unaccompanied girls and boys between the ages of 14 to 17. From each home there were one female and one male selected for the interviews. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The material was analyzed using social constructivist theory and gender perspectives. The result indicates how stereotypical ideas’ regarding gender was constructed in the social work with the unaccompanied children. Hence, the study demonstrates a need of increased education for the employees together with a need for the accommodations to adjust in order to fulfill the specific needs which unaccompanied children have not least as regarding equality and gender.

socialtjänst gällande våld i nära relationer.

    Abstract [sv]

Barn i separationskonflikt: profesionellas perspektiv2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine and compare how professionals in four groups in Human Services perceive their possibilities to see, understand and help children who experience parental conflicts due to separation. A qualitative method has been used, where the selection of participants was made through appropriate sampling. The theoretical basis applied involves professional theory with the concepts jurisdiction and scope for action, as well as new institutional theory including the concept organizational field. Based on these theories and concepts we have examined and compared how the professionals from four occuapational groups; school counselor, school psychologist, coordinator and secretary of family law, individually and in comparison with each other, describe their work with this type of problems and how they act in meetings with children. The results show that the professionals have the experience that children may feel bad about the conflict between their parents in connection with separation. In some cases, and to a varying extent, this may be expressed in meetings with the professional groups in the study. The reactions of the children highlighted in the study are bad mood, behavioral problems, difficulty to concentrate and deteriorating school performance. The professionals from the different professional groups, depending on their jurisdiction and scope for action, have different abilities to help the children showing these reactions.

Maintaining professional integrity: experiences of case workers performing the assessments that determine children’s access to personal assistance2018In: Disability & Society, ISSN 0968-7599, E-ISSN 1360-0508, Vol. 33, no 6, p. 909-931Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study explores Swedish case workers experiences of decision making regarding disabled children's right to obtain assistance in their everyday life whereby they can live independently in the community. Data collection included seven focus-group interviews and 11 complementary individual interviews with case workers from different agencies responsible for decisions regardig access to personal assistance. Grounded theory methodology was used. Compromised professional integrity under shifting conditions emerged as a main concern and maintaing professional integrity was used as an approach to resolve it. The case workers are maintaining professional integrity by applying different strategies; struggling with division of responsibility, bureaucratizig, and justifying and protecting. The results indicate that present application of assessment criteria in combination with the utilization of precedent rulings has made it difficult for the case workers to make decisions that provide children access to assistance. Current practice raises questions about the case workers perspectives of professionalism.

Assisted normality - a grounded theory of adolescent's experiences of living with personal assistance2016In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 38, no 11, p. 1053-1062Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore how adolescents with disabilities experience everyday life with personal assistants.

Method: In this qualitative study, individual interviews were conducted at 35 occasions with 16 Swedish adolescents with disabilities, in the ages 16-21. Data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology.

Results: The adolescents' main concern was to achieve normality, which is about doing rather than being normal. They try to resolve this by assisted normality utilizing personal assistance. Assisted normality can be obtained by the existing relationship, the cooperation between the assistant and the adolescent and the situational placement of the assistant. Normality is obstructed by physical, social and psychological barriers.

Conclusion: This study is from the adolescents' perspective and has implications for understanding the value of having access to personal assistance in order to achieve assisted normality and enable social interaction in everyday life. Implications for Rehabilitation Access to personal assistance is important to enable social interaction in everyday life. A good and functional relationship is enabled through the existing relation, co-operation and situational placement of the assistant. If the assistant is not properly sensitized, young people risk turning into objects of care. Access to personal assistants cannot compensate for disabling barriers in the society as for example lack of acceptance.

Elusive Participation – Social Workers’ Experience of the Participation of Children with Disabilities in LSS Assessments2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, no 1, p. 38-48Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of Swedish social workers’ experience of disabled children’s participation, to discover in what ways their knowledge about impairment and disability, combined with legal literacy and local context influence children’s participation in formal meetings and decision making. Seven focus-group interviews were conducted with 35 municipal social workers from communities in different parts of Sweden. The phenomenological analysis resulted in the overarching theme of elusive participation, in which participation was described as difficult to grasp both in relation to what was supposed to be achieved and what it was meant to result in. Elusive participation entailed a discrepancy between policy and practice, norms and perception of normality, conflicting perspectives and needs, judgment of children’s abilities. These findings underline the importance of creating safe spaces in which social workers have the opportunity for critical reflections and shared discussions about social work practice.

Reluctant participation -€“ the experiences of adolescents with disabilities of meetings with social workers regarding their right to receive personal assistance [Motvilligt deltagande–erfarenheter hos ungdomar med funktionshinder av möten med LSS-handläggare gällande deras rätt till personlig assistans]2017In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 20, no 4, p. 509-521Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the experiences of adolescents with disabilities concerning meetings that affect their possibility to receive personal assistance in Sweden. Qualitative inductive content analysis was used to describe their experiences. Overall adolescents were found to be reluctant to participate in meetings. Two main approaches could be discerned – taking part and taking part by proxy. The adolescents who took part in meetings tried to adapt their self-presentation to fit with the social workers’ requirements by presenting their worst self, giving requested information, using support and raising their voices. The adolescents who choose to participate by proxy were either being involved or not being involved. Being involved implied involvement before and/or after the meeting. The meaning of participants’ strategies was examined through a social constructivist lens. The results indicate that ‘performing disability’ during the meetings is a prerequisite for obtaining personal assistance. In its current form adolescents’ participation is reduced to tokenism and this raises questions about how to implement a child perspective.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how professionals describe the interaction between psychiatry and addiction care when it comes to clients/patients  who suffer from comorbidity of substance abuse and diagnosed mental illness. In this study we posed the following questions: How do the care personnel within psychiatric treatment and substance abuse care describe the current state of the collaboration between them? Which pros and cons do the personnel within the two sectors describe regarding collaboration? Based on six interviews; three among professionals in psychiatry and three in addiction care, the overall result shows that the informants believe that the existing cooperation works well but can be developed. The study also shows that concerted individual plans (SIP) as a tool can generate positive results for clients/patients within both organizations. SIP is also an opportunity for the professionals to go beyond the current confidentiality that exists between the client/patient and organization and thus better able to collaborate around a client/patient. The conclusion is that cooperation can be favored or discriminated against by the staff's attitudes towards individuals who suffer from comorbidity, political decisions, maneuver and professional, personal experience and knowledge of each other's professions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the consequences of a newly introduced cooperation between units within social care organizations in Sweden. The empirical data is based on qualitative interviews with two focus groups, care workers (n=4) and unit managers (n=2) in two different muncipalities. For the analysis we have used adminstrative theory and theories of leadership. The result showed that unit managers tend to have more positive attitudes towards cooperation as a way of working, than the attitudes of care workers. We argue that even though they aim for the same result, giving good care for their patients, they have different views of cooperation as a working method. Our conclusion is that unit managers tend to promote the interest of the organisation, while care workers tend to promote their own working conditions when it comes to organizational changes.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to increase understanding of how masculinities and femininities exhibit within a group of men. This was done in the hashtag #pappaledig on the social network Instagram. Variations and patterns were examined in relation to gender stereotyped norms. A semiotic image- and text analysis was used to answer the study's purpose and questions. The terms masculinities and femininities were used as an integrated analysis unit for the purpose of departing from sex dichotomy. The main results of the study showed that the majority of men's images could be interpreted masculine while the texts showed a more feminine or mixed character. In relation to Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity, the hegemonic ideals appear to be reproduced in the tougher and less expressive images while a softer and more emotional character could be seen in the captions. The more disposal character of the texts could be related to modern paternity.

Leaving home in early youth: influential factors in running away from home or being thrown out2012In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 39-58Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main objective of this article is to investigate the extent to which youth in Sweden run away from or are thrown out of their homes. A further aim is to determine what conditions lead up to and triggers such a break-up and to see what takes place during the break-up process itself. In our results roughly one in ten of youth in Sweden (≈11%) had experienced a difficult break-up from home by running away or being thrown out. Over 30% of those placed in foster families or institutions had run away from home or been thrown out. By our results, only a minority of runaways do so for the excitement or the fun. The majority made clear that their running away was a flight from the family rather than to something exciting and adventurous. It is also obvious from the results that young people who have run away three or more times are more severely at risk than those who have experienced only one or two break-ups from home. For some of these young people, a breakaway from home is the start, however premature, of an independent adult life. This vulnerable group of young people should be entitled to support from the social welfare system during their transition to adulthood.

För somliga går det bättre än andra: Nyktra alkoholisters väg ut ur beroendet och deras verktyg för att bevara nykterheten2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Voices of 65 Young People Leaving Care in Sweden: "There Is So Much I Need to Know!"2014In: Australian Social Work, ISSN 0312-407X, E-ISSN 1447-0748, Vol. 67, no 1, p. 71-87Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine young care leavers’ experiences of supportive and nonsupportive factors after leaving care. Telephone interviews were conducted with 65 young people, between 18 and 26 years old, who had left care in Sweden within the previous 3 months to 3 years. The care-leaving process was in many cases described by the young people as badly planned and compressed. Some interviewees received support from the formal network (social services, foster carers, residential homes, contact persons) for housing (37) and financial matters (36), but few received support from the formal network concerning employment (14) and education (11). Emotional support was mainly provided by partners and friends. Altogether, the results suggest that access to support is a helpful factor for young people leaving care, but also that many of our interviewees had no such access, from neither formal nor informal networks.

What Makes a Difference?: Turning Points for Young People in the Process of Leaving Placements in Public Care2014In: Social Work & Society, ISSN 1613-8953, E-ISSN 1613-8953, Vol. 12, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine young care leavers’ narrative accounts expressed as turning points connected to their experiences of being in care and leaving care. Telephone interviews were conducted with 65 young people, between 18 and 26 years old, who had left care in Sweden within the time span of previous three months to three years.

Altogether, the results suggest that there are both positive and negative turning points connected to the care experience for young care leavers. To develop a trusting relationship to a family member or a significant other, a feeling of being in control of your life and experience an opportunity to change a negative life course are important factors in the young care leaver’s accounts about turning points. These factors were also linked to how they interpreted their care experiences and the impact it had on their self-identity and well-being.

    Abstract [en]

The transition from a placement in care to an independent life can be a problematic phase for young people. In Sweden, special care-leaving services are almost non-existent. What then happens to young people when they leave a placement in out-of-home care? This paper draws on the results of a study in which 16 young care leavers between the ages of 18 and 22 years were interviewed. Telephone interviews were also performed with the young care leavers' parents, social workers, foster carers and institutional staff. The aim of the study was to investigate how young care leavers perceive the transition from care to an independent life. The Swedish welfare model, the prolonged transition to adulthood and the family-oriented welfare discourse have been used as analytical perspectives. The results show that young care leavers have a pronounced need for social, emotional, practical and financial support. Whilst such support is occasionally provided by foster carers and residential staff, it is seldom given by social services or biological parents. This group is at risk of facing severe problems in the transitional phase from care to independent life, a fact that is not acknowledged by the Swedish welfare system.

    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor’s thesis in social work highlights how older people experience the transition to a committed home care effort. The empirical material has been gathered through qualitative interviews with four older men in a rural area. The interviews have been analyzed with regard to the activity theory and KASAM. The results showed that the older men had a successful transition. They felt that the help they received from home care services contributed to a meaningful and independent life. The social interaction and the contact they got from the home help staff, meant a lot to them. One important aspect that contributed to a positive transition is the daytime activities the men attended. Conclusions that can be drawn from the study is that their own accepting attitude to the transition, and the social interaction they received from home care staff and the daytime activities have contributed to the positive experiences

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how two of Sweden's largest newspapers wrote about homeless men and women. This was done by analyzing the approach to homelessness and homeless individuals from a gender perspective, by looking at how notions of homeless men and women appeared in texts. The material was analyzed with a discourse analytical approach and a gender perspective. The main results are that homelessness are defined and problematized in media with different terms of vulnerability. The portrayal of vulnerability in relation to homelessness differs in regards to the sexes. Women are portrayed as passive victims of homelessness and men as active beings who can choose to break off homelessness. The women are also portrayed as mothers in bad relationships with men and the home is viewed as an essential arena. The men are viewed as the norm for homelessness and identified as lonely and criminal individuals.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate how first line managers in municipal elderly care experienced their psychosocial work environment during an ongoing reorganization, both from an individual and organizational perspective. Our theoretical approaches have been the salutogenic perspective, as well as Karasek and Theorell’s control, support and demand model. We use a survey to measure the psychosocial workplace environment experienced by the first line managers in an ongoing reorganization. As a complement to the survey, four first line managers were interviewed with the support of SOC-13. Previous research showed that the psychosocial work environment had a significant role in reorganization and to facilitate the change, there was several factors to consider. The result of our study showed that the first line managers psychosocial work environment did not appear to be adversely affected by the rapid organizational change, the problem was already there.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to gain an understanding from an insider perspective why dropouts are absent from school. Four qualitative interviews were conducted with former dropouts and two qualitative interviews with school representatives. The interviews were analyzed using theory triangulation based on interactionism, structurally and social constructionism perspective. The results showed that school absenteeism was applied to individual properties. The affecting individual properties differed among the informants. Emotional alienation and personal shortcomings was depicted in the former dropouts. Different medical diagnosis was the main reason for the different individual properties, according to school representatives. Insider perspective highlighted that the former dropouts school absences could be understood as an exclusionary process with feelings of inferiority to anomie. School representatives envisioned that the exclusion process continued because of parental education (in) ability and imagined the home as a comfort zone with "curling parents". Former dropouts waited to be intercepted in the school as a danger zone and understood increased resources necessary for the promotion of school attendance. School representatives realized that aid resources were necessary when absence from school was usual.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the proportion of children between ages 10-14 who clearly got to express themselves and how their views were expressed in written documents when appealing LVU to kammarrätten. A categorization of all judgments from a court were made, the eight were selected to examine qualitatively supported by Hart's ladder of participation and childhood sociology. The result showed that children in less than half of the judgements clearly got to express themselves and that the child's words were noted to varying degrees, however, in the section reasons for decision the child’s views were not included. Children are often not considered sufficiently mature in relation to adults, which means that they may not be active actors and that their room for maneuver is restricted. Adults working with children must be aware of the complexity between the child's right to participation and the child’s best interests.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the various factors that may cause self-harm, if there are gender differences in self-harm and if so how these were explained. To answer these questions, we conducted a qualitative study in the form of a research review in which we collected data in form of relevant, scientific studies. These data were then interpreted from social constructivism and symbolic interactionism. The results of our study showed that self-harm can have the purpose of emotional regulation such as to get relief from negative emotions or to control the emotions, regulate feelings of alexithymia and dissociation and express self-hatred, self-disgust and other negative feelings directed towards themeselves. Self-harm can also be caused by childhood trauma caused by parental neglect, emotional neglect and physical, psychological and sexual abuse in childhood. Gender differences in self-harm is manifested in the fact that self-harm behavior presents as an almost exclusively female phenomenon with female typical behavior behind it. This typical behavior explains by both biological causes and differences between boys and girls upbringing. Other gender differences are that men tend to injure themselves more seriously than women, often do it through behavior that is not considered to be self-harm behavior and seek help and care to a lesser extent than women. This gender difference was explained by the fact that men are ashamed of self-harm because it is considered to be a female phenomenon.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study’s purpose was to investigate and compare the view towards activities for elders among the manager, employees and the elders at a nursing home. One manager, two employees and three elders participated in interviews. These interviews showed that the view towards activities among elders was generally positive. The informants stated that the activities contributed with several positive effects. Among them were the elders’ subjectively reported well-being. This indicated correlation between the results and activity theory, implying that activities are a vital part of elders’ well-being. When the informants were asked about the possibilities as well as obstacles of elders engaging in activities, economy and disease were, directly and indirectly, brought up as obstacles. Regarding the economy, the HR perspective but also new public management could serve as explanations. The largest possibility presented however was the employees; if they were passionate about activities, as would the elders also become.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledgebase of inclusion and inclusive education and to outline possible consequences that may arise from an educational ideology of inclusion. The thesis describes a potential dilemma that is both theoretical and practical. The dilemma consists of, on the one hand, a need of identification and categorisation of specific groups in society in order to allocate and redistribute available resources, while, on the other hand, there is a need of social recognition of diversity in educational settings in order to achieve social justice and parity of participation. The inclusion of pupils with physical disabilities in the school subject of physical education (PE) is used as a particular example to illustrate a general dilemma. The specific aims were: i) to describe and apply a theoretical framework of ‘social status’ as a possible means of resolving the dilemma (study I); ii) to study PE teachers’ attitudes toward inclusive physical education (studies II and III); and iii) using a case study, to explore the experience of physical education through the eyes of a pupil with a physical impairment and his parents, classmates, PE teachers and personal assistant (study IV). Results show that Swedish PE teachers at primary school level are positive to inclusive PE for pupils with physical disabilities. Factors found to contribute to these positive attitudes were adequate training in inclusive education strategies, supportive school environments and personal resources. In a systematic review of international research PE teachers, in general, were found to have ambivalent attitudes to inclusive PE. This ambivalence was found over cultural borders among the 1200 respondents covered in the 15 articles reviewed and may indicate a latent awareness of the dilemma. Previous experience of having taught PE to pupils with physical disabilities, together with proper education in inclusion, mediated a more positive attitude. The case study of a 10-year-old boy with physical disabilities and significant others in his educational life proved to be a signal example of successful inclusion. Honneth’s three levels of social recognition were used in the analysis. Social recognition at individual, legal and value dimensions is a prerequisite for achieving social justice in inclusive PE settings. Finally, these findings, taken together, indicate a need to address social recognition and redistribution demands simultaneously in order to meet goals of equitable education for pupils with physical disabilities in inclusive PE teaching. Societal (external) and individual factors need to be combined when addressing the issue of social justice in inclusive education. A model of social status, developed by Fraser (2001; 2003), used in conjunction with the notion of plural identities is suggested as a possible resolution to the dilemma described in the thesis.

    Abstract [en]

Seeking social justice in education for pupils with disabilities creates certain dilemmas. A ‘school for all’ means that educators are faced with a dilemma where the notion of ‘disability’ is perceived as ought not to matter, but where in actual fact it seems to matter very much! This article explores ways out of this general educational dilemma using the context of physical education (PE) for pupils with physical disabilities within the compulsory school as an example. Justice theories of resource distribution and cultural recognition affect educational outcomes, where demands are for justice and equity. Fraser’s (2000/2001) notion of ‘social status’, together with a pluralistic approach to identities where personal experiences are given a place, is used to suggest a solution to the dilemma. It is concluded that a redistribution of economic resources and social recognition is necessary if social justice within PE is to become a reality.

Students' Perspectives on School-related Stress and the Role of the Student Health Services2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explored the view of a small-scale group of upper secondary school seniors on school-related stress during their last school year in comparison to previous years. A qualitative research method was used and five students partook in semi-structured interviews with open-end questions. The study derived from the perspectives of two theoretical models that were selected due to their relevance; firstly, the Demand-Control Support model, and secondly, the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. The results show that these upper secondary school seniors describe themselves as less stress than they perceived themselves to be in their second year. Regarding the stress-related effects experienced by these students, it was found that sleep deprivation and anger were the most problematic ones along with their tendencies to compare themselves to others. It was also found that the five participants perceived the school health servieces' work as insufficient in many ways. One of the most recurring suggestions, by the students, on how to improve it was to discuss stress and the availability of the school health services more openly.

The aim of this study was to investigate how social workers reflect on the leadership of their closest manager, and the significance of leadership in relation to their working conditions. Two social workers, working in child welfare social services, were interviewed. The informants described that a manager who was responsive to the needs of their employees, was clear in his/her communication, and showed an active interest in the wellbeing of the employees influenced their working conditions positively. Furthermore, the informants experienced that a manager who communicated in an unclear way, showed a lack of understanding of the needs of the employees, and did not give enough social support negatively influenced their working conditions. These results were in parity with earlier studies. The importance for future social services to focus on the development of a leadership favorable for the working conditions of social workers was discussed.
