    Abstract [en]

Elderly care in Sweden has changed over time. A development that has occurred has led to that system of freedom of choice is common for individuals in need of the elderly care. The elderly has gone from care users to become customer´s on a market. The purpose of this essay was to examine whether customers in need of home care experience that they have a real choice in a system of choice. We conducted a qualitative interview study with six individuals who are granted efforts under the Social Services Act, SoL (2001:453). The results show that respondents in our study felt that they had a real choice. The empirical data showed factors that were relevant to the customer´s attitude to their choice. Customers who lacked social support in the choice situations experienced more difficulties to deal with their own choice. The written information was another factor that was perceived difficult to deal with as it was given in excessive quantity. Customer´s own resources of social and cultural capital were relevant to how they valued their freedom of choice.

    Abstract [en]

Our aim of this study was to investigate barriers and opportunities for people with mental disorders getting in to the labor market. This from experiences by people whose daily job contains work rehabilitation for this group in particular. On the basis of five qualitative interviews the results showed that prejudices towards people with mental disorders are a barrier for them to get a wage labor. Furthermore the results showed that low self-esteem within the target group and also high educational demands becomes a barrier to a wage labor. The results also showed that to focus on the healthy aspects may serve as an opportunity for people with mental disorders to get in to the labor market and be able to have a paid job. Another opportunity for this particular group consists of getting a subsidized employment. An increased knowledge among employers about the difficulties and strengths people with mental disorders may have to execute a job, can also serve as an opportunity for them to get an employment.

    Abstract [en]

For companies today, it is important to have functioning internal information. The purpose of this study was to illustrate how store managers and employees in a company experienced and defined their internal information, how the internal information works at present and how they wanted to obtain it in the future. Another goal was to highlight the information channels that were considered the most informative and functional. Eleven interviews were carried out and the data was analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis. The study proved that the experience of internal information was positive among the interviewees. The most important information channel was verbal information, which was appreciated by both store managers and employees. Verbal information gave the opportunity for discussions and face to face interactions that made it possible to clarify the information. The study revealed that lack of time and advanced searching paths may obstruct the collection of information. The conclusion was that the interviewees perceive information as something important within the company and several states that it was crucial for the company's existence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate to which extent the fulfilment of the psychological contract predicts the perception of employers' attractiveness (based on the dimensions, interest of the employer, social-, economic-, development- and application value) of new employees in an agency in central Sweden, in addition to the background factors of job satisfaction, gender and age. To collect data, a web-based survey was created that was answered by 118 newly employed at the chosen organization. The survey questions were based on three measuring instruments, Global Job Satisfaction, PSYCONES and EmpAt. Also background issues about age and gender were requested. The result showed that the fulfilment of the psychological contract could predict the perception of employers' attractiveness for all five dimensions of EmpAt in addition to the background factor job satisfaction. Age and gender as background factors did not contribute to any significant results.

Fear of Wolves and Bears: Physiological Responses and Negative Associations in a Swedish Sample2013In: Human Dimensions of Wildlife, ISSN 1087-1209, E-ISSN 1533-158X, Vol. 18, no 6, p. 416-434Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Human fear is important in wildlife management, but self-reported fear provides only partial information about fear reactions. Thus, eye movements, skin conductance, and changes in heart rate were assessed during picture viewing, visual search, and implicit evaluation tasks. Pictures of bears, wolves, moose, and hares were presented to participants who self-reported as fearful of bears (n = 8), fearful of bears and wolves (n = 15), or not fearful of bears or wolves (n = 14). The feared animal was expected to elicit strong physiological responses, be dwelled upon, and be associated with negative words. Independent of fearfulness, bear pictures elicited the strongest physiological responses, and wolf pictures showed the strongest negative associations. The bear-fearful group showed stronger physiological responses to bears. The bear- and wolf-fearful group showed more difficulty in associating bears with good words. Presence of a feared animal in the search task, resulted in prolonged response time.

Fear makes you stronger: Responding to feared animal targets in visual search2012In: Attention, Perception & Psychophysics, ISSN 1943-3921, E-ISSN 1943-393X, Vol. 74, no 7, p. 1437-1445Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

To investigate whether fear affects the strength with which responses are made, 12 animal-fearful individuals (five snake fearful and seven spider fearful) were instructed to decide as quickly as possible whether an animal target from a deviant category was present in a 3 × 4 item (animal) search array. The animal categories were snakes, spiders, and cats. Response force was measured, in newtons. The results showed that the strength of the response was greater when the feared animal served as the target than when it served as the distractors. This finding was corroborated by evoked heart rate changes to the stimuli. Our findings strengthen the argument that focused attention on a single, feared animal can lead to increases in manual force.

Drömmen om att bli någon: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om doping2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine school social workers perceptions and experiences of school social work with suicidality among students. To fulfill this purpose, six qualitative interviews have been made and two questions have been asked. The first question we asked was what kind of perceptions and experiences school social workers have when it comes to suicidality among adolescents in school. The second question we asked was how school social workers describe their practical work with students who are suicidal. The result shows that even though there are experiences of students who have suicidal thoughts, students who have made suicide attempts and students who have committed suicide, suicidality among students is something that is perceived as rare among the school social workers. Stress, mental health problems and difficult life situations is seen to be contributing causes of this phenomena. The result also shows, that school social workers in some ways have the ability to discover and work with students who are suffering from suicidality. However, these possibilities are also limited. School social workers experience a lack of instruments to detect suicide and to be able to work with suicidality in school. Instead, school social workers describes relationships and collaboration with both students and with other groups of staff in school as the primary basis for their work with suicidality among students.

”I min situation som människa är jag en tvåa”: En studie om brukares perspektiv på möten med socialarbetare inom socialtjänstens missbruksvård2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

”It´s never too late.” - Four stories about the path out of crime.

The purpose of this paper was to study the subjective experiences of factors that have contributed to desistance from criminal behavior, and the factors which, according to the interviewees own experiences lead to the maintenance of a more conventional lifestyle. The study was performed using qualitative semi-structured interviews with four ex-offenders. The results have shown that factors, such as love relationships and parenting, as well as desistance from alcohol and drug abuse and changing their environment are factors that in interaction with each other have affected the interviewed individuals desistance from criminal behavior. Routines, new social network and support are factors which, according to the interviewees made it possible to maintain a more conventional lifestyle. The study's main conclusion is that the interaction between external and internal factors so called ”turning points”, is crucial to a desistance process to be successful.

Unga kvinnors upplevelse av abort: En kunskapsöversikt av aktuell forskning utifrån ett socialkonstruktionistiskt perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the social and psychological factors that may be of importance for young women's decisions leading to abortion, and their experience from induced abortion. A knowledge review using the qualitative method of research with empirical information collected from 9 scientific articles. The result shows that social norms and values, relationships with partners, parents and friends, personal values and their degree of self-awareness are of importance for young women's decision on abortion. Women's ways of relating to the pregnancy and depicting the fetus as well as having mental support from close relatives affected their experiences of the abortion. An important conclusion is that a more open and accepting climate in society towards young pregnant women, together with mental support and objective information about women’s own choice in youth clinics, could lead to a greater opportunity for young pregnant women to make independent decisions.

Public attitude towards the implementation of management actions aimed at reducing human fear of brown bears and wolves2015In: Wildlife Biology, ISSN 0909-6396, E-ISSN 1903-220X, Vol. 21, no 3, p. 122-130Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research on human fear of large carnivores has mainly been based on self-reports in which individual survey items and the objects of fear are measured, so whether a person fears attacks on humans or livestock and pets has not been identified. The objectives of this study were to differentiate between the objects of fear as well as capturing attitudes towards implementation of management actions and the potential for conflict index (PCI). These concern the implementation of a limited number of management actions currently used or discussed in Sweden that are aimed at reducing human fear of brown bears/wolves. 391 persons living in areas with either brown bear (n = 198) or wolf (n = 193) in Sweden responded to a questionnaire. The degree of self-reported fear varied between residents in brown bear areas and residents in wolf areas. The fear of attacks on livestock and pets was stronger than fear of attacks on humans in both brown bear and wolf areas. In brown bear areas, fear was strongest for livestock, while in wolf areas fear was strongest for pets. The fear of attacks on livestock and pets was significantly stronger in wolf areas, while the fear of attacks on humans was strongest in brown bear areas. In both brown bear and wolf areas, there was little acceptance of implementation of management actions that would allow people to carry pepper spray or a gun outdoors. Management actions aimed at setting a population cap for bear/wolf populations, information on how to act when encountering a bear/wolf, and providing information on local presence of bear/wolf had relatively high acceptability. This was especially true for respondents expressing high fear of attacks on humans.

Conservation of historical landscapes: What signifies ‘successful’ management?2018In: Landscape research, ISSN 0142-6397, E-ISSN 1469-9710, Vol. 43, no 5, p. 735-748Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on the management of an industrial heritage site in Sweden, which local stakeholders and heritage planners have claimed to be successful. This status of excellence is investigated in relation to the general, county-wide applied heritage planning. The results show that key factors for successful management of the industrial heritage site are not related only to conservation work, but also to personal engagement, sense of responsibility, and well-being among participants. However, heritage planners generally lack methods to address immaterial values and socio-economic benefits of engaging in heritage activities, resulting in a separation between physical and communal aspects of heritage planning. The results highlight the issue of professional legitimacy and the challenges for heritage planners to address regional policy objectives, such as finding ways to utilise historic landscapes in destination-driven strategies and to simultaneously support civil engagement in heritage-related issues. © 2017 Landscape Research Group Ltd

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine the methods that social workers and other professionals use in their work with children and youth with ADHD and behavioural problems.

Seven professionals from different practices and backgrounds where interviewed about their methods and their understanding of the underlying psychosocial mechanisms of behavioural problems in children and youth with ADHD. Results showed a wide variety of methods used across the field.

Interviewees pointed out the importance of flexible and individually adaptable approaches and methods, including forms of cognitive training but also pharmacological aspects. Interviewees agreed on most points regarding the underlying psychosocial mechanisms revolving around childrens academic and social difficulties and processes of negative identity-shaping. The findings indicate that time of diagnosis and parent’s and teacher’s understanding of ADHD plays an important role in the development of behavioural problems, and that a variety of different methodological approaches to intervention seem to have good results.

Krigarmorsor: mödrars upplevelser av att ha en son med Aspergers syndrom2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to research with the help of sociological theories the reasons why resilient children despite a destructive childhood can evolve to social functioning humans. Resilient children in this study have grown up with addiction and/or mental illness among parents in childhood. Data was collected by semi structured interviews with four different themes: the social heritage, education and work, social network and health and well-being. Which we analyzed with the help of the theoreticalframeworks, Antonovskys theory Salutogenesis and Bourdieus Reproduction theory. The results showed that the presence of safety figures in childhood as well as the opportunity to experience a different family dynamic and another environment than their own home environment has affected them positively. Even their abstinence approach to alcohol and drugs, and that they have a strong sense of responsibility has affected their overall social capital positively.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine if the introduction of neighborhood watch affects the number of burglary. The questions asked were; which types of methods of neighborhood watch were used, and what kind of differences there were between selected areas in Södermalm, Stockholm. We created a matched sample of areas and contacted mediators of neighborhood watch in these areas. We conducted a quantitative study using structured interviews and presented data per burglary rates in the areas five years before and one to five years after neighborhood watch was implemented. The results were analyzed by comparative analysis and concluded that common methods of neighborhood watch were e.g. signage, security doors, good contacts between neighbors and attention to suspects in the area. The differences between the methods used means that general conclusions about differences and similarities cannot be concluded. The impact of neighborhood watch differed, and the results were ambiguous.

The purpose of the study was to investigate if there was a difference in the experience of employer attractiveness and experience of recruitment process, based on whether the respondent had received employment or not at the selected organization.

The purpose was also to investigate whether there was a correlation between experience of employer attractiveness and experience of recruitment process. The questionnaire used contained questions about the experience of the recruitment process and employer attractiveness, the latter was measured using the Employer Attractiveness scale. The study showed that those who became employed rated all dimensions of employer attractiveness higher. Furthermore, the study showed that those who became employed rated the dimensions fairness and treatment higher. As for the experience of the usability of the recruiting tool there were no differences between the groups. The results also showed a positive correlation between experience of the recruitment process and experience of employer attractiveness.

Peace-building for promoting well-being of communities in Nepal: Exploring the role of Social Workers2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nepal’s history is full of civil turbulence and the socio-economic development has been slow, however the last decade the social changes have been rapid. Some of the social changes include the profession of social work and peace initiative through inter-faith. The aim of this paper is to explore the role of social workers in peace-building in order to promote wellbeing and work-life in Nepal. This paper gives an insight into the life and relationship among the community members in Nepal, and an insight of how culture, religion, and history may impact people’s everyday-life. The data collection of this study was carried out through a field visit, with semi-structured interviews with twenty-five different key informants, during the period of February to May of 2018. The interviewees include grass-root to national level faith-leaders as well as social work academics. The result of this study indicates that there is a lack of trust among the community members, between government and its people, and government and its external influences, which effect community’s socio-economical standard. The findings also conclude that Nepali society lacks adequate and effective information-sharing, which seems to impact the community’s health and work-life. his study gives social workers an insight on how social bonds and trust among groups could be established, which could increase the well-being of the people in rural area of Nepal.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

“It takes two to tango” - a study about collaboration between social workers and school counselors.

The main aim of this study was to examine and compare how school counselors in the upper secondary school and social workers discloses their cooperation in their joint work with adolescents. To fulfill this aim qualitative focus group interviews were conducted with six professionals. The results showed that both the school counselors and the social workers experienced ambiguity regarding cooperating in their work. The importance of transparency, clear goals and feedback is highlighted by both groups. The result also shows that these professionals had different views on cooperation. In conclusion, how improvements could be made in the feedback between social workers and school counselors was discussed. The importance of improving transparency towards the adolescents from the school counselors was underlined.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores how Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) can globalize a criminal justice curriculum. It draws on a project where criminology students in Sweden and the United States collaborated in an online environment. We describe the design of the project and use student reflections to identify successes and challenges. The results show that for a CSCL to be successful, instructors need to be intentional about academic, psychological, and interpersonal aspects of the collaboration, as they are all interrelated. The students experienced challenges, for example, related to the workload. However, in most cases, the perceived benefits outweighed the challenges. The students reported an improved understanding of criminology theory and enhanced critical thinking skills. We argue that CSCL can improve the affordability and accessibility of global learning. Without having to travel, the students entered a virtual space where they could learn together with students and faculty from another country.

New in a foreign country – the importance of civic orientation

    Jessica Gerhardt & Hiba Sultan

We have examined the information on parenting in Sweden that is given to new immigrants through civic orientation. The aim of the study was to investigate how new arrivals are being informed of Swedish laws and regulations relating to child rearing and corporal punishment. The study also aims to examine how a lack of information about raising children in civic orientation can affect newly arrived families. Our empirical work has been created by a focus group interview with the child and family unit on social services and a call interview with an SFI-teachers who teach newly arrived immigrants in civic orientation. The results were analyzed by a social psychological perspective that explains society's impact on the individual. The results show that all respondents agree that there are flaws in the civic orientation of newly arrived immigrants, both in terms of education and content. A lack of civic orientation can lead to children of new arrivals become physically and mentally abused according to Swedish law. Newly arrived families should be given guidance on which methods are appropriate for raising children in Sweden.

The purpose of this study was to chart and analyze the level of knowledge among the professionals who in their line of work meet young girls who have been exposed for cyber bullying, also to identify what the consequences that cyber bullying has for young girls in the age of 13-15 years old, focusing on their wellbeing. In this study four semi-structured interviews were used. The theories chosen for the analysis of our results were symbolic interactionism and objectification theory. Results from this study showed that girls were mostly exposed to cyber bullying because of the way they look. That results in negative consequences for the young girls’ wellbeing, in terms of lower self-esteem, questioning of their self, unease and anxiety. All our participators in this study were unanimous that education within the subject was important, but that the education they currently had wasn’t good enough.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to obtain an increased knowledge about experiences of leadership among employees in workplaces that focus on a health promoting leadership. The purpose of this study was to examine this issue in relations to the employees experiences of obstacles and opportunities in the health promoting work. In our study we performed four quality interviews with persons active within the public sector. The result of the study has there after been analyzed with the help of Antonovskys analytic method – KASAM and system theory. The most important results observed from our questions are that these respondents experience support from their colleagues and manager, though some of them underline that the support fails when it comes to stress and high workload. The majority of the respondents experienced high participation and influence at the working place while others did not experience this within the organisation. Another important factor that is revealed from our result is that more frequent dialogues with the employees, where you systematically discuss the working environment, seems to give positive effect on the indivduals´ health which confirms the importance of systematical health promoting environmental work.

    Abstract [sv]

Legalisera narkotika?: Ett diskussionsunderlag2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Samhällsproblem2010Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Vad händer om vi legaliserar narkotika?2012In: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift, ISSN 1104-1420, Vol. 19, no 1, p. 56-64Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine the possibilities and difficulties for social workers whom work with individuals on long-term economic support. We used a qualitative method and interviewed six social workers from one municipality. We chose to use two theoretical perspectives, Empowerment and KASAM (Feeling of context), when analyzing the results and the study's empire was analyzed using a phenomenological and hermeneutic approach. Our results showed that the interviewees own view, on the work with individuals on long-term economic support, was that it is permeated by high workload, limited scope for action and difficulties in meeting with clients. The interviewees also stated that the organization, laws and guidelines affect the work with clients to a substantial extent and the ability to work out ideas with managers and colleagues is a great support.

Key words: social work, social worker, long-term, economic support.

Livsberättelser av unga män i förorten: En kvalitativ studie om identifiering av risk- och skyddsfaktorer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Even though recent decades have seen a clear trend towards organizational specialization within Swedish personal social services (PSS), there is a lack of knowledge about the consequences of this, particularly from a client perspective. The aim of this compilation thesis is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizational specialization for clients with complex needs. The empirical material consists of a survey and an interview study, both addressing clients whose needs can be considered complex since they entail several parallel contacts with different specialized PSS units. Article one is a research review aimed at summarizing and discussing the research on organizational structures in the social services, and these structures' impact on work with clients. The review suggests that, to function adequately, social service organizations need to combine and balance aspects of both specialization and integration. Article two aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive and value the service conditions of the organizationally specialized PSS. The main findings are that clients primarily perceive and value their encounters with the specialized PSS negatively, and that they experience several elements of service fragmentation. The aim of article three is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialized PSS. A key finding is that clients combine different approaches (categorized as consensus, resignation, fight, and escape) in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests. Article four aims to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs perceive the conditions for helping relations in a PSS setting marked by organizational specialization. A lack of system trust, the people-processing dimensions of work, and an organizational and professional emphasis on formal organizational structures and boundaries were found to constitute unfavourable conditions. Conversely, the occurrence of individual trust, the people-sustaining and people-changing dimensions of client work, and the boundary-spanning efforts of both informal organizations and individual social workers constituted favourable conditions. The thesis concludes that there seems to be a substantial lack of fit between the logics and features of organizational specialization on one hand, and the complex and interwoven nature of clients’ actual needs and everyday lives on the other. It is also argued that organizational specialization means that the complexity involved in encounters between clients and the PSS is overlooked or obscured. Further research on the structural arrangements and service conditions that surround encounters between clients and the social services is suggested, especially research that adopts a client perspective.

    Abstract [en]

Research in the field of human services has paid limited attention to the consequences of the international development toward organisational specialisation; the consequences for clients have been overlooked in particular. The aim of the article is to describe and analyse the consequences of organizationally specialised personal social services (PSS) in Sweden for clients with complex needs. Findings from a survey and an interview study addressing PSS clients show that clients primarily perceived their encounters with the specialised PSS negatively, and that they experienced several elements of service fragmentation. Implications of the findings are discussed in light of previous research and theory in the area.

The Balancing Act: Clients with Complex Needs Describe Their Handling of Specialised Personal Social Services in Sweden2017In: British Journal of Social Work, ISSN 0045-3102, E-ISSN 1468-263X, Vol. 47, no 3, p. 611-629Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Dealing with specialised social service organisations can be a challenge for clients with complex needs. These organisations may appear confusing and hard to navigate, and there is also a risk of service fragmentation, as such clients often participate simultaneously in an array of interventions. An additional complication to be handled is that these parallel interventions can range from voluntary to more or less involuntary. The aim of the present article is to describe and analyse how clients with complex needs account for their handling of service conditions within specialised personal social services (PSS), using data from a qualitative interview study with PSS clients in Sweden. A conceptual model is presented, covering four ideal typical client approaches to these specialised services: consensus, resignation, fight and escape. One key finding is that the clients combined these approaches in a balancing act intended to promote their own best interests in their parallel contacts with different parts of the specialised PSS organisation. The article concludes that future improvements in social services could be made by paying more attention to the structural arrangements that surround encounters between clients and the social services, as well as clients’ valuable first-hand knowledge of social service organisations.

been implemented as planned, which essentially has resulted in predominantly

positive effects. Within the framework of this essay and in proportion to it´s

limitation, it seems that an effective leadership has been incorporated which seems

to have led to an improved working environment. Furthermore, the index data

suggests an increased efficiency in the police departments investigation results. For

instance, it is shown by fewer open investigation cases.

Den gravida missbrukaren: En studie om ett tvärprofessionellt teams arbete med den gravida missbrukande kvinnan2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Self-help facilitation for people living with disabilities: a tool for empowerment? A qualitative study in the context of rural Zambia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is the result of a field study conducted in the southern part of Zambia, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how self-help facilitation provided by the organisation Response Network can contribute to the empowerment of people living with disabilities in the context of rural Zambia. We interviewed four people working for the organisation as well as the principal responsible of youth with disabilities in a rural high school. We also conducted two focus group interviews with two disability support groups in a rural village. The results of this study were analysed using empowerment theory and systems theory. Our findings showed that self-determination, education and participation were contributing to the empowerment of people with disabilities. Level of attitudes, understanding and motivation were shown to be important factors which impact the empowerment of people with disabilities.

Samverkan - Hinder eller resurs för individer med psykosociala problem?: En kvalitativ studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To cooperate in social work is a current theme as two new sections of the law has arisen in the recent years. These make clear that collaboration should take place between local governments when working with individuals with psychosocial problems. The purpose of the study was to examine how collaboration work between the municipality and county meets the individual's right to social security, equal living conditions and self-determination. In this study, where four professional performers and six individuals with psychosocial problems participated, the respondents' answers to how they experience that the interaction meets the intention of the law where compared. The results were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach and using systems theory and empowerment. The findings were consistent with existing research, that interaction is very important for achieving positive effects that lead to a better quality of life for the individual. Further clarifies both our study and other research that the individual should be included as a resource in the collaborative process, to achieve the effects of self-determination, which can provide a social security.

Relationer mellan individuell och kollektiv plats och arbetsidentitet: betydelsen av boendelängd2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Effects of biodiversity and environment-related attitude on perception of urban green space2017In: Urban Ecosystems, ISSN 1083-8155, E-ISSN 1573-1642, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 37-49Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Green space in cities contributes to the quality of life for city dwellers, e.g., by increasing the opportunity for recreation. However, perception of urban green space is influenced by multiple factors. We investigated effects of biodiversity and environment-related attitudes on visual and auditory perceptions of urban green space. Field measurements of biodiversity were conducted in six sites across an urban gradient in Gothenburg, Sweden, and three categories of biodiversity—high, medium, low—were established. Households were sent a survey on aesthetic perception of urban green space, sound perception and the importance of trees and plants for the perception of bird species. Each respondent focused on the site that was located nearby. The environment-related attitudes comprised “Nature-oriented” and “Urban-oriented” persons and were based on participants’ own attitude estimations. It was shown that participants’ “subjective” aesthetic and sound-related perception of urban greenery were in line with the “objectively” measured subdivisions of high, medium and low biodiversity. So also were their estimations of the importance of trees and plants for perception of bird species in urban greenery, although differing only between high and medium/low biodiversity conditions. Persons rating themselves as highly nature-oriented were shown to give higher scores to urban green space aesthetics and to value greenery-related sounds higher, and to attach greater importance to trees and plants in their perception of bird species in urban greenery, than less nature-oriented persons. Highly urban-oriented persons compared to less urban-oriented persons did the same, but only regarding urban greenery-related aesthetics and sounds of nature. We conclude that environment-related attitudes influence perceptions of green space. Moreover, our findings support the idea that biodiversity per se also influences perceptions; people value green space significantly more with high than with low measured biodiversity. Urban planning needs to provide city inhabitants with green spaces that are species-rich, lush, varied and rich with natural sounds.
