    Abstract [en]

    The trend towards global markets requires cost effective and flexible freight, for which purpose shipping with containers can be used. This type of freight has thus in recent years acquired an increasingly important role in international maritime transport, which has increased the pressure of effectiveness in container operations, as competition in the area has grown tougher. Gävle Hamn AB is an important part of a supply chain, with the purpose to deliver timber extracted from Swedish forest industry to distributors worldwide. The part of the chain which is represented by Gävle Hamn AB includes loading of the timber in containers. The company has a problem with the effectiveness of container operations and has asked for help to design proposals for improvements to raise this. This thesis is therefore concerning analysis of container handling inside of a port area.

     

    Factors affecting the efficiency of a supply chain as well as in a container business have been identified. In a supply chain, such factors can be the composition of operators and how well they communicate with each other. Efficiency factors in a container business comprise among others of the types of containers, communication and transportation.

     

    To enable a science-based analysis of Gävle Hamn AB's operations, a model for analysis and improvements of container handling inside of a port area has been developed, which also includes the total flow from raw material supplier to the final customer. The model has been divided into external and internal flows. External flows include operators and the communication between them and internal flows include, among other things, internal transportation, containers, internal communication, elimination of waste and calculation of logistics costs.

     

    Gävle Hamn AB's operations have been mapped and problem areas identified. The methods used to collect empirical data for the mapping are surveys, observations, collection of secondary data and benchmarking.

     

    The designed model has been applied to Gävle Hamn AB and consequently recommendations to the company formulated. Examples of recommendations to the company is to invest in a computer system for vehicles, increase the number of orders, eliminate waste, investigate the possibility of moving the business to another area and introduce a new pricing approach (see 7 Recommendations to Gävle Hamn AB). The model can also be applied by other companies to improve their container handling.

    Abstract [en]

    To distribute goods to customers in urban areas is necessary to support the economic and social development in the cities, but has consequences that affect both residents of cities as well as the environment. The environmental effects of these types of transport involves not only the emissions of various pollutants, but also an increased noise level inside the cities. Many companies and organizations are working hard to change the distribution pattern to streamline transport in the urban area, while environmental impact is reduced. This is in line with what is called the City Logistics. The purpose of this thesis is to create a method for describing and measuring a given transport solution in order to compare it with an altered transport solution to achieve a more sustainable development. To construct a method, you have to first find out which previous methods and models are available. In our case, we found three specific models that we considered appropriate to study in its entirety and see whether these would fit for what we wanted to measure. What we found in these models is that it does not measure exactly what we intended to measure, some elements from the different models could be embraced and used as we supplemented with other aspects such as the environmental aspect. The environmental aspect is something that we believe that the models presented in the literature did not take into account. However unveiled the rest of the literature the importance of working to reduce emissions, since the focus of many companies has been to streamline production processes and reduce the effects of these so have environmental impacts from transportation have been overlooked. The models from the literature also had a holistic view of the entire supply chain, from incoming material to production, storage and distribution. We found that a lack of models that measure only the distribution from the distribution centers. Our method gives the user a picture of the traffic situation as it can then be compared with the new outcome at the next measurement. The method that we have developed in this thesis is meant to be used as a tool for annual monitoring of transport operations to measure and make changes, if any patterns and trends can be detected. Sandviken is used as case studies for this thesis, in order to test the method and to draw conclusions about how the method works.

    Abstract [en]

    Mossberg (1998) confirms that batch-based logistics in the book industry has several negative consequences. Mossberg (1998) writes the following;

     "AN ONGOING WASTE OF RESOURCES

    The unsold books are incurring transportation and inventory costs ... ... surplus - often more than half the recipients edition! -- canceled within three years. Aside from the offensive in this waste of resources, this procedure contributes to the fact that the Swedish book market has got the '' fresh character '' as mentioned earlier -- and as entails a temporal limitation of the Swedish-language literature" (Mossberg, 1998)

     Mossberg's (1998) findings also support the observations we have made in this study. This constitutes the foundation of this survey, where we contributes for a more effective and sustainable operation at one of Sweden's largest economy book producers.

     The purpose of this study is to examine the advantages and disadvantages that come with make-to-stock and a batch based logistics management of books. But also to identify the advantages that, according to the theory, can be achieved in a transition to make-to-order with a print-on-demand solution.   The goal is to present recommendations for decision-making and future strategy for the company where this study took place, as well as to help other companies with similar needs and requirements.

     This case study is conducted at a Swedish company which essentially work with customer service / support to businesses using their accounting software and services. An important part of their service means publishing as well as e-books sale of information books. We have noticed that little is done to improve their efficiency and quality in this area.

     Our study shows that this company would gain several benefits by making use out of a print-on-demand solution. This because it would improve their quality in all respects we’ve focused on, with a lower total cost, no tied up capital and en reduced environmental impact.

    Differentierad lagerstyrning är endast ett av många verktyg i lagerverksamheten som används för att styra olika flöden i ett lager. Dessa flöden handlar framförallt om ruttplanering och problemen med tilldelning av lagerplatser för effektivare lagerhantering. Åsikter om framtiden delar forskning i två läger, vissa menar på en allt mer automatiserad utveckling, medan andra menar att de manuella systemen kommer fortsätta att vara dominerande. Gällande lagerverksamhet behövs mer forskning kring helheten, bevis som förankras mot industrin och binder ihop teori med verklighet, samt att befintliga metoder behöver vidare utforskas.

    Syftet med detta examensarbete är därför att göra en modell över differentierad lagerstyrning och bidra framförallt med att knyta ihop teori med praktik. Detta examensarbete diskuterar även kring andra aspekter inom lagerverksamheten. 

    Detta examensarbete baseras på en triangulering utifrån flera perspektiv. Dessa perspektiv är fallstudie, observationer, litteraturstudier samt kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder. 

    Resultatet visar att en differentiering på artikelnivå är lämplig för fallföretaget i studien. Intervjuerna tyder på att system ibland inte är anpassade efter verksamheten. Verktygen kan ibland vara för komplicerade och statiska, och anställda efterlyser mer anpassningsbara verktyg till arbetsuppgiften. 

    Tidigare forskning har efterlyst helheten och därmed människan. Ett system där människan lyfts fram som en del i det stora hela har betydelse för kulturen och därmed vad företag gör. Verksamheters förmåga att bemöta förändringar står eller faller med kulturen och hur företaget ser på människan.

    A shift towards a higher interest in locally produced food is in motion. With the increased interest, producers also need to be able to provide the amount of food demanded. Today, producers have difficulty in achieving current and increased customer demand due to costly transportations and too little foodproduction. Local manifactures do not currently have the opportunity to profitably sell to the ammount of customers desired as they do not meet the minimm requirements that the shipping companies have for cooperation.The purpose of this survey is to develop a proposal for a logistics model that can be used by people in the category of locally produced food in Gävleborg County.For the reason that there is not much earlier research and theory on the subject, an inductive approach has been used. In order to obtain relevant information, a quantitative and qualitative approach has been used, with a quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interviews and observations. The creation of questionnaires and interview questions has been done in consultation with local producers and other people and associations which are in some way engaged in locally produced food.Some of the secondary sources used in the study of the questionnaire and interview questions, the proposal of the logistics model, as well as support for the gathering of empirical data include Hub and Spoke, Supply Chain Management, Third Party Logistics, Packagings Tasks and Planning of Transport.The study also analyzed the various sales channels that local food producers use. Some of these are grocery stores, farm shops, restaurants and public kitchens.The end results of the study is presented with a proposal for a logistics model which, as a starting point, has given the producers more time to expand their core business, which is to produce food. This is done through a shipping solution with third party logistics companies, standardized packages for easy loading and prerequisites for reaching out to a larger market. As a result, this leads to increased employment and aims at the goal of Gävleborg County to become self-sufficient.

    This study is prepared for making contribution to current logistics literature about fine art logistics and to investigate relation between niche market strategy and innovative third party logistics services.

    The method used is a qualitative case study at Benice Logistics, a fine art logistics service provider firm, located in Turkey.

    This study concludes and suggests how, third party logistics service providers should be more innovative for settle new business trend, and how they can create new opportunities and new specialization areas with their innovative services.

    Abstract [en]

    To remain competitive in today’s industry requires development and improvement of businesses. To implement change is a challenge where resistance from employees might arise. Production systems with high complexity and unpredictable events places high demands on traceability and good communication. To achieve good communication and traceability in production organizations often implement identification technology. Theory related to implementing change in production is widely spread which makes it difficult for organizations to plan and execute the change process.

    This study aims to develop a model for organizations who want to implement identification technology in manufacturing systems. The model will simplify the implementation and avoid resistance from employees through participation in the change process. When developing the model, theory in change management has been collected and evaluated. Theory was examined at the Swedish company Edsbyverken who wanted to implement identification technology in their production.

    To identify a suitable identification technology for Edsbyverken and understand the origin of the problem, analyses of the current situation along with interviewing employees were made. Through this process lack of communication and the need for creating participation emerged as key factors. Furthermore the project group benchmarked three successful companies in the work to find a suitable solution.

    The most suitable techniques for Edsbyverkens production proved to be RFID or bar code/QR-code. When implementing chosen technology the project group recommends dividing the implementation process into three levels to avoid adaption problems.

    This study concluded a model which contains five steps for implement identification technology; current situation analysis, identify suitable technologies, benchmarking, pilot project and implementation. Management commitment and participation among employees are factors that should distinguish every step in order to achieve successful implementation.

    Värdeskapande tid är något som skapar ett mervärde för kunden, något som förädlar produkten. Tyvärr är stora delar av ledtiden för en produkt icke värdeskapande. Det finns undersökningar som visar att den siffran kan vara så hög som 90 % av den totala tiden. Aktiviteter som inte bör ses som värdeskapande är interntransporter, lager och alla kostnader förknippade med det. De kostnaderna kan vara administration, godsmottagning, inkurans och själva kostnaden för lagerlokalen. Kostnaden för att lagra en produkt i ett år kan i vissa fall uppgå till en fjärdedel av produktens totala värde. En annan stor kostnad är internlogistiken med alla materialförflyttningar mellan olika produktionslokaler och maskiner. För att bli konkurrenskraftiga på den globala marknaden i dagsläget bör företag arbeta med att minimera icke värdeskapande tid. Att aktivt arbeta med ständiga förbättringar och införa olika typer av standarder har visat sig vara effektivt i just det avseendet. Lean är ett uttrycke som härstammar från den japanska biltillverkaren Toyota och dess produktionssystem TPS. Grundtanken inom lean är att undvika allt slöseri och för att göra det finns ett antal olika verktyg. Genom att implementera vissa av dessa verktyg i produktion och i lagerlokaler har stora förbättringar upplevets, främst genom minskat transportarbete men också genom annat minskat icke värdeskapande tid.Företaget Aven Sandby AB tillverkar olika typer av emballage i trä, allt från lastpallar till avancerade lådkonstruktionerna. Företaget har under senare år implementerat att antal olika lean verktyg som har förbättrat arbetsmiljön och vissa delar inom produktionen. Ett problem som de dock inte arbetat aktivt med under åren är att effektivisera internlogistiken. Vissa lager har nu nått den höga nivån att det tar betydande tid att söka igenom lagret för att finna rätt råvara. Andra problem är att mycket truckkörning sker i onödan vilket är en följd av att det saknas en tydlig struktur på lagerhållningen.Syftet med den här studien är att utveckla en modell för hur tillverkande företag kan minimera den icke värdeskapande tiden för artiklar. Intervjuer och observationer på företget tillsammans med en omfattande litteraturstudie utgör grunden till modellen. Efter besöket på företaget har modellen justerats en aning med flera underkategorier.Under studien framkom bland annat att företaget blivit mycket bättre inom många delar och den struktur som skapats kan kopplas till affärssystemet Monitor. Monitor implementerades på företget för ett antal år sedan och har i underlättat att kontrollera lagernivåer samt att övervaka produktionen. Just implementationen av ett affärssystem är en viktig del för att underlätta arbetet med att minska icke värdeskapande tid. Andra faktorer som anses viktiga vid arbete med att minska icke värdeskapande tid är att följa ett förutbestämt arbetsmönster likt en standard. Dels genom standardiserade mått på artiklar och råvaror, där den som utvecklar en ritning bör veta vilka som är de tidigare mest använda dimensionerna. Även arbeta med metodstandarder vilket är en enkel beskrivning på hur ett visst arbete ska utföras. Företaget har även arbetat med lean och några av verktygen inom filosofin, bland annat att tillverka några typer av lådor på linje. Linjetillverkningen och verktygen har höjt produktionstakten på företaget och bör därför anses bidra till att minska den icke värdeskapande tiden. Genom att följa någon av ovanstående förslag bör företag ha en god möjlighet att med hjälp av teori samt praktik minska sin icke värdeskapande tid.Förslag till fortsatta studier är att undersöka hur arbetet med metodstandarder fungerar och hur ledningen kan engagera de anställda att ständigt förbättra dem.

    Abstract [en]

    During todays conditions is it no longer possible to offer only good products, it is important that companies are as efficient as possible in every way. An uncertain market creates variations in demands, one way of managing these variations is to build a flexible company. A flexible production is based on the utilization of resources, which include both machinery and staff. A strategy for achieving flexibility in staffing is through an internal staffing bank, a team that works to cover up for different needs. In the past, it has been difficult to meet different variations in staffing. This study points out that an internal staffing bank promotes efficiency and flexibility within the companies. The purpose of the study is to identify various success factors and risks with an internal staffing bank focused on work that does not require any credential. Furthermore, the purpose is to establish decision criterias for a possible decision regarding the establishment of a staffing bank. 

    To answer the purpose, a qualitative case study with an abductive approach is used to get a generalized picture of the problem as possible. The data collection consisted of interviews with two companies from different industries with three respondents selected on the basis of different competence requirements regarding the subject internship crew pool. The theory collection consisted of literature considered appropriate for the work with the staffing bank.

    The study resulted in a framework with different criterias that will serve as a basis for decision making before the choice of which employee strategy is determined. By looking for keywords during the interviews and the chosen literature, several success factors and risks could be detected. Success factors consisted of knowledge, job rotation, strong leadership, teamwork, clear information sharing and a fellowship at the workplace. The risks consisted of the lack of fellowship and the members of the bank itself. There is always a risk of recruiting staff, but in a staffing bank the consequences are more visible clear if the staff do not have enough knowledge or do not want to rotate work assignments. There may also be a high risk of having an internal staffing bank full time as the need may change. In order for the internal staffing bank to be as effective as possible and to contribute to the various success factors, the staff bank needs to be used properly. The risk is that the staffing bank is used for functions that do not coincide with the purpose, the same efficiency and flexibility that the staffing bank might contribute with can not be expected if it is not properly used. 

    The conclusion of the study is that an internal staffing bank is a good option for many companies, but not every company. It is important to observe which conditions each organization has. The staffing bank can promote health and create flexibility for companies at a lower cost than other staffing strategies such as external staffing. Respondents and previous studies emphasize that a strong leadership is needed for the staffing bank to provide the various improvements and successes that can be achieved.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate technologies for mitigating the break-of-gauge problem at the border crossing points in international transportation corridors. This issue has been examined through a literature review. The research revealed three technologies for mitigating the break-of-gauge problem, including trans-shipment operations, removable coach bogies and variable bogie axles. The medium-term solution would be more rapid trans-shipment operations in the railway container terminals while the long-term solution would be adjustable bogie axles. This could reduce lead-time and improve the overall productivity and competitiveness of international corridors and in turn lead to reduced logistics costs for companies using this transportation alternative.

Although transports affect the environment, there is little research on the relationship between transport and Green supply chain management. The purpose of the study is therefore to design a strategy for achieving Green supply chain management and reduce unnecessary transport with a focus on uncertainty, variability and transparency.

    Method- To enable the answering of purpose, a case study conducted with the help of literature and a case company.

    Results- The case company is negatively affected by uncertainty, variety, and also by a lack of transparency in the supply chain. Unnecessary transportations through recalls are created because of quality defects. This creates obstacles for a supply chain management strategy to be more effective. A systematic approach by Plan-Do-Check-Act can help the case company to create a stable basis and achieve green supply chain management. It is necessary to conduct Plan-Do-Check-Act with good communication in order to create transparency, prevent uncertainty and variation.

    Green supply chain management can be achieved through a combination of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Lean. These parts should be conducted with PDCA, which can reduce unnecessary transportation.

    Problem – Logistics services worldwide are not considered to be environmental sustainable because of their high emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHG) as well as its air, soil and water pollution. Since fourth party logistics providers (4PLs) manage the entire supply chain they can reduce their harmful environmental impact on a large scale through green logistics innovation., There are however difficulties for 4PLs to innovate in green logistics.  Purpose – This paper investigates how 4PLs generate and manage green logistics innovation. It also explores what drivers and barriers there are for developing green logistics innovation.  Method – This paper is based on a single case study that uses CIMO logic in the theoretical framework to thoroughly explore and clarify the area of green logistic innovation among 4PLs. Semi structured interviews and a questionnaire were constructed as the main source for gathering empirical evidence.   Results – The case company provided evidence for how 4PLs innovate by being close to their suppliers and customers and finding new opportunities for green logistics innovation. Drivers and barriers are also identified for green logistics innovation.  Conclusions – The study shows how 4PLs can manage and generate innovations as well as create their own playing field by developing competence for new areas of business, enlarging the boundaries for 4PLs to innovate in. The study also shows the importance of considering the goods as a factor in green logistics (particularly reverse logistics).

    In order to be competitive, one way is to focus on the internal logistics in a cost effective manner. The concept of material control covers how to control the flow of material resources from the customer to the supplier. This study intends to look at how internal material control can be done efficiently in a manufacturing company.

    In order to achieve an efficient internal material control, methods and approaches should be evaluated based on a situational approach. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to develop a model for analysis and improvement of internal material control in manufacturing companies.

    The study is a case study and has been conducted on site at Atlas Copco Tierp Works. Atlas Copco in Tierp, produces components and assembles hand-held power tools. The empirical data has been conducted with employees at Atlas Copco Tierp Works and with direct observations of the processes that the study has been limited to. Literature reviews have been made in parallel with the empirical data collection with an emphasis on internal logistics, material control and lean production.

    The study shows which factors that are important for an effective internal material control. Furthermore, the report presents an analysis model, which has been applied to Atlas Copco Tierp Works. The analysis model presents a recommendation on appropriate material planning method, as well as the conditions that should be complied in order to achieve an efficient internal material control. The analysis model strengths are considered as mainly to be that it covers many areas, by including the planning environment, material planning methods, efficiency and decision-making. Accordingly, the model is considered to have potential for development by including a cost analysis as a part of the decision-making part.

    According to Steenken et al. (2004) container shipping is corresponding to 60% of global shipments by sea. The use of container transport has increased tenfold since the mid80's. An increase in container traffic is according to Steenken et al. (2004) putting increased demands on ports logistics, management and selection of technical equipment. One technique that many writers argue for is the RFID technology which is an emerging technology that can facilitate more of these areas. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the applicability of using the RFID technology for efficient handling of containers in container terminals. In order to define the work, this study chose to focus on how RFID technology could be applied within the container terminal with RFID tags attached to the type of cargo containers. The research questions were: What are the critical factors for container terminals profitability? What areas are important to consider when applying the RFID technology? What opportunities for improvement entail application of RFID in container terminals? What problems or obstacles present themselves in the application of RFID technology in container terminals? To answer the purpose and questions of this study the authors of this study based on the theoretical framework developed an analysis model containing five key areas that should be examined to determine if RFID is adding value to applicable for the surveyed port or not. This model will be applied to two cases, Gävle Container Terminal and Zhuhai International Container Terminal Gaolan Limited. The study has demonstrated that RFID technology is applicable and can generate benefits in several areas of container terminals, but the study also found several barriers to success. These are particularly cost and standards. But the study also shows ways to circumvent them, including through the development of RFID with other stakeholders in the chain

    Logistik kan bidra till kostnadsbesparingar bland företag vid användning av resurser, utöver det så kan en framgångsrik logistik ge företag fördelar när det handlar om att skapa värde åt kund. Vid marknadsföring så kan logistik även ha en stor inverkan på hur bra slutresultatet blir (Fuller et al., 1993). Hur bra kvalitén är på logistiktjänsterna är därför en viktig faktor inom marknadsföring för att skapa kundtillfredsställelse. För att effektivt kunna använda logistik som ett hjälpmedel för att få ett konkurrensmässigt övertag så krävs det ett samspel mellan företagets marknadsavdelning och de som arbetar med logistiska frågor (Mentzer et al., 2004).

     

    Syftet med denna undersökning är att utveckla och testa en modell för analys och förbättring av försörjningskedjor med hänsyn till ett supply chain- och marknadsperspektiv. Modellen har skapats med stöd av litteraturstudier och empiri i form av dokument och intervjuer från företaget, även möten med handledare. Målsättningen är att modellen ska vara generellt utformad, vilket gör att andra företag ska kunna använda sig av den. Den teori som vi har använt oss av och som återfinns i den teoretiska referensramen är främst insamlad via böcker och vetenskapliga artiklar.

     

    GLT-Laserstans är ett företag som befinner sig i Sandviken, de kan beskrivas som en legoverksamhet inom plåtindustrin som arbetar mot kundorder. Utöver legoverksamheten har de även en egen produktserie av tejphållare som de tillverkar. Dessa tejphållare anses som väldigt attraktiva på marknaden och de förekommer i många olika typer av varianter. Företaget vill ha hjälp med att undersöka vad de har för sorts kunder, vilka eventuella konkurrenter som finns och hur stark produkternas position är på marknaden.

     

    Resultatet av denna undersökning blev till slut en handlingsplan i punktform som företaget kan använda sig av vid det kommande förbättringsarbetet. Denna handlingsplan består av förbättringsförslag som är framtagna med hjälp av modellen och företaget kan sedan välja vilka punkter som man väljer att arbeta vidare med. Modellen applicerades med goda resultat vid denna studie.

     

    En slutsats som kan dras är att både logistik och marknadsföring syftar till att skapa värde för kund. Det som skiljer de två begreppen åt är de metoder som används för att skapa detta värde. Utan ett samspel mellan logistik och marknadsföring kan det vara svårt för organisationer att skapa hållbara förändringar.

    The ‘City Logistics’ activities are contributing to traffic congestion and accumulating to environmental challenges, such situation has prompted the creation of urban consolidation centre (UCC), as a multimodal logistics park facility in the outskirts.

    The relocation of business from a city to the outskirts requires the evaluation and assessment of the key factors in order to make the better decisions.

    However, no relocation decisions evaluation model has been found, neither its application on the case company to find the effects of relocation on the logistics firms.

    This study is aimed at developing general business relocation model, that can be used by logistics firms, to evaluate the effects of their relocation.  The model is a decision making tool.  

    Application of the model before the relocation, help’s in decision making. Therefore, this research study focuses on developing a general model involving selected important factors that can be considered by logistics firms to evaluate the effects of relocation.

    The results for this research were analysed using the qualitative method, predominantly literature review, factors were applied on the case company.

    The DHL’s relocation scenario from Gävle city centre (Näringen) to the proposed Tolvfors Logistics Park (outskirts), relocation led to transport cost and drive-time reductions, along with efficiency improvements. The evaluation model has been developed, have likewise presented the drivers of relocation, and factors that logistics firms can consider for relocation’s possible outcome.

    It is becoming increasingly important for companies to meet customer demands due to intense competition in today's global market, that forcing companies to improve their offerings and become better at managing their supply chain (Shen et al., 2006).  Long lead times can be reduced by using different methods and strategies shows various researches. Lead times occur in the planning, production, inventories and handling of products (Treville et al., 2003).

    The aim of the study is to develop a method to analyze the factors that affect the length of internal delivery lead time in manufacturing companies. The method also included suggestions for reducing delivery lead-time to internal customers.

    The main factors that influenced the length of the on delivery lead times has summarized to make a selection among the factors that can have the most significant impact. The selected elements will be used as a method to analyze how these areas affect a company’s length on internal delivery lead times.

    The study shows that the causes of the long delivery lead times was the location of the customer order point, uncertain forecasts, long material and production planning time, and long waits in the production and storage.

    The delivery lead time, according to this report’s suggested improvements reduced by centralizing CODP and makes more reliable forecasts. This would lead to improved planning capabilities. Although, to create regulation between companies and their internal customers may lead to reduce delivery lead times

    Abstract [en]

    For a long time logistics have been an important part of industrial activities. Dated from 1970s, with the emergency of third party logistics (TPL), companies began to think about insourcing or outsourcing. As the development and expansion of TPL, outsourcing logistics activities to third party logistic have became a worldwide trend.

    Companies could gain a competitive advantage from outsourcing. Outsourcing to TPL providers could make companies focus on their core tasks. An appropriate TPL provider could apply technology and expertise, which help companies reducing costs and improving services. Flexibility and efficiency can also be achieved by adopting good TPL providers. In this sense, helping companies to make outsourcing decisions and to select optimal TPL providers is meaningful.

    The purpose of this thesis is to bring a holistic view of third party logistics and to build models for companies to select optimal TPL providers. To achieve the purpose, relevant literatures were reviewed to gain theoretical bases. Qualitative and quantitative research methods are both used in the thesis.

    Two models for selecting TPL providers were built in the thesis. One was qualitative model that contained four steps: defining problems, formulate criteria, qualify selection process and finally make decision. The other one was a quantitative model with DEA method. It contained six steps: define problem, select candidates, select criteria and indicators, determine input and output and collect data, calculate the efficiency and make final decision.

    Each model was applied on a case study to examine its validity and feasibility. Both advantages and disadvantages were found during the case studies. The conclusion is that both of models could be used for companies and it allows a company to choose the most suitable one.

    Outsourcing of the maintenance activities related to safety-critical systems poses several challenges, where unauthorised access can lead to severe consequences in terms of data vulnerability and huge income lost. Companies can prevent the dissemination of information by managing security, which also contributes to economic and social sustainability. The purpose of the study was to investigate how organizations in the industrial sector deal with the issues of information dissemination in the outsourcing of maintenance activities related to safety-critical systems. To study the area, eleven companies have been interviewed where the results have been compiled in a cross-case analysis, which has been analysed against previous research. The study shows that there are several factors leading to an increased risk of undesired dissemination. Furthermore, the study has resulted in a model for managing control over the dissemination of information in the outsourcing of maintenance for safety-critical systems.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis investigates and design innovative concepts of noise protection solutions (NPS) for the Swedish high-speed railway (HSR) that is planned to be built between Stockholm and Gothenburg in the near future. The planned traffic will start in 2035. The concepts have been developed through a design process, starting with a research phase of existing solutions for the problem, theory about noise and absorbing materials. Following by an analysis of all researched data to narrow down the project and the interviews with the Swedish transport administration, this in order to pinpoint the requirements for the NPS. To get opinions from people who are exposed to low frequency noise, two questionnaires were conducted with a total of 80 respondents. Because of the difficulty to find the exact target group of people who are only exposed to the noise from high speed trains, the first questionnaire was open for all people who are exposed to low frequency noise (traffic noise). The second questionnaire was published at Trafikverket Facebook page, and because of their high number of followers, people who are exposed to train noise could easily be reached. From the answers and the analyzed data, a requirement specification for the NPS was created with all the requirements that the NPS needed to have according to Trafikverkets standards and from the questionnaire. These requirements were the prerequisite used in the synthesis phase. Different brainstorming methods were used to develop a large amount of ideas. A workshop with people from the society was held to keep the creativity alive. From the first synthesis phase, six ideas out of 160 ideas were chosen by a dot evaluation, and in order to narrow down the ideas even more, a matrix evaluation was used. The matrix was built from the requirement specification to verify which ideas fit most of the requirements for a new NPS. From this evaluation, two concepts were chosen to be developed further. After a validation from Trafikverket, the two concepts were further developed, this by an open brainstorming session. Via discussions and sketching, new ideas for the concepts arose. We found solutions for the problems that arose with each concept and made final decisions about the design and material. Three concepts were 3D visualized in the CAD program Rhinoceros. Final touches of the concepts were made in Keyshot. Throughout this thesis, three concepts for noise protections for the HSR have been developed and the research question “How can innovation be created by using a design process?” have been discussed and answered.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how sustainable transport requirements are applied and transferred throughout the supply chain from logistics buyers to logistics service providers and further on to transport subcontractors so that the sustainable transport requirements can be fulfilled. 

    Methods: For the study, an in-depth single case study was conducted to evaluate the application and transferring of sustainable requirements throughout the supply chain. The chosen case has a defined supply chain including a logistics buyer, LSP and several transport subcontractors. Therefore, BillerudKorsnas (as logistics buyer), Schenker Dedicated Services (as LSP) and Spedition Bode, NVO Transport B.V. and GN Transport (as transport subcontractors) were selected. All data was collected through in-depth interviews and internal documents from the case companies. A narrative and cross- analysis were conducted to look for interpretations, insight and meanings of the outcomes by comparing and contrasting the data from the interviewees and documents. A total of fourteen interviews were conducted and eight interviewees from five case companies were involved. 

    Findings: According the logistics buyer BK in the case study, the application and transferring of sustainable requirements in the supply chain are equally important as traditional requirement such as overall costs, service quality and performance. However, the LSP and transport subcontractors found it that traditional criteria were preferred over sustainable requirements since customers and suppliers demand these requirements. Sustainable requirements are coming from different actors within the supply chain. From the logistics buyer BK, only handling requirements and sustainable according the Swedish Forest Federations Standards are included. The LSP on its turn increases the sustainable requirements towards transport subcontractors in terms of quantity. Then finally the included transport subcontractors do not find it difficult to fulfil these sustainable requirements since European laws are more demanding. To conclude, the level and number of sustainability requirements increases along the supply chain. 

    Academic contributions: The study shows how sustainable requirements are applied and transferred throughout the supply chain from logistics buyer to LSP and further on to the transport subcontractor. The authors shown the importance of inclusion of transport subcontractors when investigating sustainability requirements of transport in the supply chain. 

    Limitations and further research: Since the study is a single-case study, the generalizability is only limited to the number of case companies included in this study but the principles can be generalized. The transport subcontractors used in this study, only represented 12 percent of total transport share. Therefore, in future research more transport subcontractors should be included to increase the total transport share. Also, we recommend to conduct a comparable study within other supply chain to test the data empirically.

    Background and problem: The use of e-commerce has grown during the last years and this has resulted in more opportunities for the customers. With e-commerce it is easier to reach out to a bigger targeted group without geographical obstacles. This causes a need for changes in the distribution of physical products. Because of the high demands customers have on e-commerce it is important that companies work step by step to improve the e-commerce or they will not be able to compete with other companies.

    Purpose: The purpose with this study was to design a model for analysis and streamlining in e-commerce and appurtenant distribution. The model is evaluated at the company EM-möbler.

    Method: A literature study was conducted from scientific articles, books and internet. The collected theory is the base for the model. The empirical data was gathered by interviews with store managers and other personnel at EM-möbler and the customers replied to a survey.

    Model: A model was conducted through a compilation of important factors from the theory. When the model was applied on the case company a few problem areas and areas of development emerged. After applying the model the strengths and weaknesses of the model appeared.

    Conclusion: there are many factors influencing the process of e-commerce and the customers have high demands on the home delivery. To design a model for analysis and streamlining in e-commerce and appurtenant distribution have all the factors from the theory been compiled. To clarify the links between the different factors a “map” was designed and to clarify how the model should be applied a step-for-step guide was created. When the model was applied on the case company some problem areas and areas of development emerged. Because of the many factors influencing e-commerce and the appurtenant distribution there are good possibilities for development of the model since the model only treat a few factors.

    The literature suggests that supply chains should be designed based on product characteristics, with particular focus on technological maturity and its effect on the predictability of demand. However, other factors influence the predictability of demand and technological maturity has effects that go beyond demand forecasts. This paper discusses the actual challenges of designing a supply chain and, based on a single case study, illustrates how a leading technology-based company solves these problems. The study found that although technological maturity drives a change towards a more efficient supply chain, a partially separate supply chain had to be maintained for unpredictable demand.

    Interest in the implementation of AGV-systems (Automated Guided Vehicle) has in recent decades increased. The reason is that it allows companies to perform reliably and secure internal transport while reducing the need of personnel. It is one of todays most advanced and complex material handling system that can independently make their own decisions regarding flow paths and traffic control. An AGV-system consists of transport units carrying cargo from point A to point B, and communicates using a computer.

    The purpose of this study is to develop a model on how to proceed in order to design an AGV system in heavy industry. The model is tested by a case study of a company in the metal industry to determine if the model works and gives the correct result. Relevant literature has been collected through scientific articles, books.

    In order to find relevant information, a flow mapping on Billet preparation of Sandvik AB was performed. The information was summarized in a situation analysis. In order to design the AGV system, we found that analytical approach and simulation was according to the literature's most successful approaches. By using these methods in the theoretical model and adjust their performance against one another the results from the model should be a sufficiently accurate reflection of the design needed to serve the Billet preparation.

    The purpose of the study is to design a methodology to streamline layouts for production and associated material flow. In order to test and evaluate the methodology a case study was performed at Eco Log Sweden AB, a company in Söderhamn producing forestry Machines.

    The purpose was answered by comprehensive interviews, observations and literature reviews. With supported by relevant theory and the case the methodology were composed to be used for streamlining production layouts. The methodology consists of five steps and is inspired by systematic layout planning (SLP) and further methods and factors. As organizations look different the methodology may be needed to be adapted in the specific case when applying to other companies.

    By applying the methodology at Eco Log a number of different wastes were identified. In order to reduce waste four layout proposals has been produced. Eco Log was recommended to select the layout that after evaluation is considered to best meet the needs of the company. In addition to the layout, suggestions for further improvements have been provided.

    Using the methodology identified factors that are important for production efficiency and factors affecting the layout design. For further work on the methodology can be broadened through cover more aspects that may be relevant to a production efficiency and material flow. Regarding generalizability considered it good then use the theory has taken from the publicly known literature on the subject, but to strengthen the generalizability of these topics may be tested at other companies.

    Introduction: Increased transports on the global market is effecting the environment negatively, which has led to an increased interest in sustainable logistics. The logistics service providers (LSPs) play a major role in achieving the set environmental goals.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how LSPs can be more sustainable today and in the future.

    Methodology: In order to answer the purpose of the paper two phases were used. Literature was collected and used as the basis of knowledge in the field. At the same time interviews were conducted with three LSPs. Their answers were compared with each other and with the literature. From the analysis a conclusion was drawn.

    Results: The two smaller companies had no demands from customers regarding their work with sustainability. For all the involved LSPs sustainability mostly meant the environmental aspect. Their focus is on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, this is achieved by using environmentally certified vehicles, choice of fuels and reducing the fuel consumption. The three LSPs all have an environmental management system and work continuously to be more sustainable. They have trained their drivers and have set up an IT-system for direct feedback. This helps the drivers to see the impact their driving has on the environment. To achieve a high fill ratio the companies avoid empty runs and try to maximize the cargo capacity. The LSPs collaborate with competitors and pick up cargo for each other.

    Conclusion: There are tools to apply to obtain more sustainable transports. These are the choice of vehicle, the choice of fuel, fuel consumption, training, IT-systems, packaging solutions and collaboration. The most important factors for the LSPs today are the choice of vehicles, the choice of fuel and fuel consumptions. A lot is happening in the area of alternative fuels including the development of biofuels, electric vehicles and electric roads. Also a change of attitude from the transport buyers regarding the sustainability is needed because today they mainly focus on the price.

    With the booming volume of international trade, the container shipping industry plays an important role in the world now. The previous literature only shows separate factors for the development of the port. And the container transport chain is only analyzed separately without the development of the port.

    With abundant of literatures and theories, the factors influence the development of the port can be divided into two parts. The external factors include the hinterland, the international trade and the policies. And the competition and coordination between different ports constitute the internal factors. The container transport chain is important for the internal factors. It can affect the area of the hinterland and the cost for the customers.

    The Tianjin Port is introduced as the case for this thesis. And for the comparison, the mature port Rotterdam and the competitors within Bohai Rim are showed. The data are from official website of the ports and other organizations with high reputation.

    And the relationships of the inside and external factors are discussed in the analysis. With the SWOT matrix, the case of Tianjin Port is compared with the mature port Rotterdam and its competitors Qingdao Port and Dalian Port.

    The container transport chain in Tianjin has the disadvantages such as complicated information flow system, lower capacity of rail transportation and the over fierce market of the third party logistics companies. By the end of the thesis, how to adopt the container transport chain with the rapid development of the port and some suggestions for the further development of Tianjin Port are given as the conclusion.

    Core enterprise is the center of Green Supply Chain (GSC) and it helps partners to meet the environmental standards and to improve GSC’s performance. However there are two questions for core enterprise when it establishes GSC: What roles do core enterprise play in GSC? How does core enterprise improve GSC’s performance? What criterions are considered when core enterprise chooses partners in GSC?

     

    In order to answer these questions, this paper will use following methods: firstly, Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and Analytic network process (ANP) have be used to study on three research companies (IKEA, TOYOTA and Apple); Secondly, six interviews with research companies’ employees.

     

    After case study, the results show that when core enterprise chooses partners, it will draw up some criterions and sub-standards for partners to fulfill. Furthermore, core enterprise plays the roles as GSC’s builder, director, coordinator, and designer in the system.

     

    Finally, this paper answered the research questions: Firstly, in order to improve the performance of GSC, core enterprise should direct all partners in GSC to save materials and recycle waste in each link of GSC. Secondly, core enterprise can use four criterions to choose partners. These criterions are: environmental management performance, product-related elements, production-service levels, and enterprise culture.

    With the development of logistics market, the third party logistics can no longer solve all the problems in supply chain management, the appearance of fourth party logistics is a breakthrough solution to modern supply chain challenge. Since China has become the manufacturing center of the world, it attracts more attentions to its own logistics market. But at the same time, there are few studies on Chinese fourth party logistics.

    This purpose of the study is to research a fourth party logistics service provider in China, including the barriers and the recommendations to promote its development. The fourth party logistics assembles the resources, capabilities, and technologies of its own company and other companies to design, build and run comprehensive supply chain solutions (Foster 1999). The research objectives of the study are 1. Identify what is the smart logistics and the factors comprised smart logistics network in general. 2. Describe the Rookie plan and analysis its property and prospect. And 3. Classify the impact of smart logistics on customer satisfaction or requests, and formulate recommendations on how to improve the performance of Rookie plan.

    Due to such aims, this research pursues a hybrid method which consists both of survey and case study about the ‘Rookie Plan’. Hereby, not only the secondary data for theoretical framework establishment and information gathering of the case project is engaged, but also the primary data through questionnaire to the sellers on the ecommerce platform named ‘Taobao’. For enhancing the reliability and validity of the survey, the overall process is conducted base on a four step guideline, as well as four-phase data analysis method for analyzing the information. What is more, the overall analysis part is led by PEST model. The integration of all methods above confirm the reliability and validity of the research process.

    The results of survey show that there is a necessary to bring smart logistics into e-commerce, and there is a huge potential for the development of fourth party logistics.  This study has demonstrated that Rookie Plan, the new type of logistics service provider in China has obtained a significant achievement and bring the customers huge benefits, but it also faced some risks including it cannot guarantee all aspects of this plan can have well function, and the underdevelopment logistics infrastructure also hinder its development. As the reason of achieving a better development of Rookie plan and shining a light for other 4PL companies in China, the recommendations for Rookie Plan are strengthen the planning and construction of logistics infrastructure, promote the development of third party logistics service provider, and accelerate the integration of e-commerce and modern logistics industry.

    This paper examines the process of employing four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics. The paper mainly tries to answer research questions: what is fourth-party logistics and information systems; what are benefits and barriers for using four kinds of information systems (RFID, WMS, EDI, Electronic marketplace) with the help of fourth-party logistics; what are unique benefits and barriers for fourth-party logistics to employ the four kinds of information systems and how to overcome the difficulties. To answer the research question, qualitative case study approach was employed and two case companies were chosen. Information in literature review was collected from secondary data for example scientific paper. Information in findings was collected from interviews of people in charge of the project and internal reports.

     

    Definitions of fourth-party logistics and information system were reviewed in literature review. The differences between fourth-party logistics and third-party logistics were presented as well. In addition, categorization of various kinds of advanced information systems was also listed.

     

    Benefits and barriers organized from literature and case studies were gathered and compared in discussion. Two significant benefits were identified: opportunities to do businesses with leading companies and improved efficiency. Two main barriers are confusion of the concept of fourth-party logistics and terminology of information system and financial justification. There are different opinions between the two case companies, literature review and empirical data, and between different literature. The paper concluded that there are many benefits and barriers for employing the four kinds of information systems in fourth-party logistics, and the future development of it is promising.

    The last decade has created an increasing pressure on companies to decrease their impact on the environment and to increase their effectiveness of recycling the company’s resources, especially for the steel industry. Companies have also started to realize the economic aspects of an effective internal reverse logistics. In the past the value of an effective internal reverse logistic was something that companies tend to underestimate and there are few academic studies done in this area.

     

    The purpose of this essay has been to identify key factors to create an effective in plant storage, transport, sorting and handling of returned steel. From these factors a generalized model for creating an effective return steel flow will be developed. The model will then be adjusted to fit a case company, which in this case is Sandvik Materials Technology (SMT) on Sandvik.

     

    The purpose is answered by detailed studies of the literature in the subject combined with interviews and observations on SMT. Through this the key factors have been identified and a model has been developed. The factors that were seen as most crucial were sorting, tied up capital, transport cost and handling cost. These factors have a strong connection between each other and it is important to strike a balance.

     

    By the investigation carried out on SMT it is clear that sorting is the essential factor on the case company, and have the biggest impact on the effectiveness of the returned steel flow. Without functioning sorting there will be a large increase in the quality defect costs. Another factor that was considered important is the number of storage places, where a decrease in the storage places would reduce the tied up capital.
