    Abstract [en]

    This paper addresses the issue of transportation services sourcing using the mix of contract-based and on-demand sourcing. The model considers when the demand is fluctuating following a seasonal pattern. The discrete-event simulation has been used to identify the appropriate mix and the effect of the demand fluctuation measured by three performance indicators: product fill rate, shipment reliability, and truck utilisation. A set of experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effect of various factors on the performance of transportation sourcing. The experiments show that more on-demand sourcing improves the product fill rate but worsens the shipment reliability and the truck utilisation. The results also show that the performance indicators are worsening as the demand becomes more fluctuated.

    Abstract [en]

    Spare parts are, for many companies, a complex product to logistically handle. This is in part due to the varying characteristics and sporadic demand patterns of spare parts. Obstacles can often arise when companies utilize the same approach to their spare parts stock as they do with their general warehouse manufacturing inventory. By using the same approach, companies risk neglecting the widespread variation of the spare parts. With the help of established routines, a clear set of guidelines and factors, the chances of a successful handling of spare parts inventory is increased.

    The study is a qualitative case study with the purpose of identifying specific factors and to make recommendations of models for companies to take into account when evaluating and storing spare parts. Through unstructured/semi-structured interviews conducted with four case company employees, information was gathered which was used to assist in identifying these specific factors and models for companies. A theoretical frame of reference was produced through analyzing research articles and was compared to the compiled empirical data in an analysis.

    The departments within the case study based their work on single factor which were considered important for each specific department, without inter-departmental communication. The factors that were identified in the study include service, competitive advantage, tied up capital, size capacity, complexity, sales frequency and material. Four of these were considered to be a priority for the case company. The study showed that different models for spare parts management and outsourcing could be implemented in the case company. By integrating the different models for spare parts management and outsourcing, combined with communication, a new model has been proposed for handling the spare parts storage.

    Abstract [en]

    A project can be defined as a temporary work that is within the scope of time and budget in terms of achieving a project goal. Due to the fact that construction projects are unique and usually very complex, project management therefore requires a working method that is adapted to the prerequisites of the project. The project manager's responsibility to follow up on the budget and ensure that resources such as working hours and consulting services are distributed correctly, is becoming increasingly challenging as the change paradox shows that flexibility decreases and costs for changes increase as the project progresses. Exceeding the project budget in construction projects has today become a global phenomenon and involves several negative social effects. Scientific studies show that the increased costs can be derived from deviations such as additions and changes during the construction project. On the other hand, there are perceived gaps in the literature for which factors affect the extent of these and thus became the study's area of ​​investigation. Based on the scientific gap, the study aims to analyze the startup process in smaller construction projects with regard to identifying the factors that have an impact on additions, but also to review how project managers can proactively manage these factors in order to reduce the risk of increased deviations. To answer the research questions and purpose, a qualitative case study has been applied to a global consulting company in the construction industry, where semi-structured interviews were conducted with five project managers at the company.

     

    The result of the study shows that project managers do not take preventive measures or work to prevent deviations in the startup process. Based on a thematic analysis of the results, factors with an impact on deviations have been identified in three areas; systematics, communication and experience and competence. The study has shown that increased costs for additions and changes can be deduced from different approaches to project management and misleading information, inadequate requirement specification that leaves room for own interpretation, unspecified communication channels, conflicts, lack of competence and abrupt completions of the project. In order to achieve a more proactive startup process in order to prevent increased costs for additions and changes, project managers should ensure a clear requirement specification by discussing important issues and decisions, requirements and expectations with support from templates and checklists. To avoid misunderstandings and conflicts, a communication plan can be established. Finally, the choice of project model should be established and routines for final reporting should be introduced to create a learning organisation that increases the project managers' self-insight and competence regarding increased costs for additions and project changes. The theoretical contribution of the study is the identified factors within three areas as well as suggestions for how project managers can facilitate the management of additions in the startup process of construction projects.

    Inledning: Marknadstillväxten har gått framåt senaste åren och företag bör hitta konkurrensfördelar för att fortsätta vara lönsamma. Priser bör anpassas efter marknaden och vetskap om tillverkningskostnad blir viktigt för tillverkande företag. För att beräkna tillverkningskostnad för produkter kan självkostnadskalkylering och totalkostnadsmodellen användas. Ett materialflöde i en produktion består av processer som innefattar hantering, förflyttning och lagring av material. Studien har inte funnit någon tidigare forskning eller modell som förklarar relationen mellan materialflöden och tillverkningskostnad på en detaljerad nivå vilket motiverar studien.

    Syfte: Syftet med arbetet var att utforma och utvärdera en modell för bestämning av tillverkningskostnad med utgångspunkt från materialflöden i produktion med avseende på lagring, transport och tillverkningsoperationer. Metoder: En abduktiv ansats har använts för att besvara syftet och frågeställningar där teori och empiri har inhämtats parallellt under arbetets gång. I studien har teori och empiri lagt grund för kostnadsfaktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden.

    Utformning av modell för bestämning av tillverkningskostnad: I studien har teoretiska och empiriska undersökningar utförts för att redogöra för olika kostnadsfaktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden. Modellen använder tre aktiviteter för att kategorisera identifierade kostnadsfaktorer i ett materialflöde: operation, lagring och transport.

    Tillämpning och utvärdering av modell: Modellen tillämpades på fallföretaget Alderholmens mekaniska. Efter tillämpningen utvärderades modellen där styrkor och utvecklingsmöjligheter presenterades. Slutsats: Studiens bidrag är en modell för beräkning av tillverkningskostnad med utgångspunkt från materialflödet i produktionen. Modellen presenterar vilka faktorer som påverkar tillverkningskostnaden. Kapitlet avslutas med rekommendationer till framtida studier för att utöka kunskapen inom ämnet.

    Purpose

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problem faced by many Taiwanese restaurant owners who trying to set up their shops in Thailand.

    Design/methodology/approach

    Two surveys were conducted in this study. The first interview questionnaire was designed using the factors proposed by Parasuraman et al. (1988, 1991) and given to restaurant owners/managers who successfully set up shops in Thailand. The second questionnaire was constructed specifically for Thai consumers.

    Findings

    Gray relational analysis (GRA), theory of inventive problem-solving (teoriya resheniya izobreatatelskikh zadatch, TRIZ) and interpretive structural model (ISM) were used to identify potential difficulties and to determine the key factors impacting the shop establishment and development in Thailand. The results provide a set of strategic sequence when launching restaurant in Thailand.

    Originality/value

    A result of GRA determined 14 important factors that influence customer perception of quality service. A TRIZ analytic process provided 17 strategies when setting up overseas shop and the ISM class diagram shown the three phases needed to be considered before restaurant owners can set up shops abroad. The three phases are construction, operation and competition phases. These set of strategies sequence when launching a restaurant in Thailand.

    Industries aim to have a high performance to get a high profitability. A high performance comes from the employees' work performance every day. This work performance for industry employees comes largely from the motivation they feel for the work. In this study, work motivation for employees in industry has been examined through a questionnaire study together with interviews with selected persons from the management. The conclusion for this study is that employees' work motivation in industry´s is strongly linked to how the management manages and acts within the organization. The management influences the employees' motivation by controlling how the organization is structured, which reward systems are to be used and how the corporate culture is structured. If employees in industry´s experience high motivation for their work, the work performance will increase along with increased work motivation. The result of this study shows how corporate culture together with other motivation factors can motivate employees to increase work performance in the manufacturing industry. This study has also resulted in a self-developed model that can be used by companies to increase work motivation and thereby the work performance of the company.

    Inom dagens tillverkande företag pågår en allt större konkurrens om att vinna marknadens kunder. En av de främsta konkurrenskrafterna är korta ledtider. Som ett led i detta har vetenskapliga filosofier och metoder inom Lean blivit allt mer förekommande inom verksamheterna. Teorierna handlar om att skapa effektiva processer och att producera rätt produkt, till rätt kvalitet inom rätt tid. Under de senaste åren har en ökad medvetenhet för inköp-och orderhanteringens betydelse trätt fram. Enligt tidigare forskning kan en effektiv inköps-och orderhanteringsprocess bidra till att den totala tillverkningsprocessens ledtid effektiviseras. Sekventiella arbetsprocesser är vanligt förekommande trots att administrativa handläggningsaktiviteter ofta kan utföras parallellt, detta medför en onödig fördröjning av ledtiden. Studiens syfte är undersöka hur orderhanteringsprocessen ledtid kan reduceras. En ledtidsreducering baserat på att finna icke värdeskapande aktiviteter och problemområden inom och åtgärda dessa med hjälp av lämpliga åtgärdsmetoder.

     

    Arbetet är en fallstudie som utförts på teknikutvecklingsföretaget Syntronic. Arbetets empiriska studie gjordes genom intervjuer, observationer och dokument. För att underlätta analysarbetet användes ett fiskbensdiagram för att finna orsakerna till problemområden och icke värdeskapande aktiviteter i processen. För att förtydliga processflödet och vart i processen de identifierade problemområdena uppstod kartlades observationen genom en värdeflödesanalys. Arbetets litteraturstudie bestod av teorier kring orderhantering, effektivisering, ledtider och Lean.

     

    Analysarbetet gav upphov till att bristande kommunikation, avsaknad av standardiserat arbetssätt, bristande planering, bristande affärssystem samt bristande helhetssyn var orsakerna till den ineffektiva orderhanteringsprocessen. Studien resulterade i att lämpliga förbättringsåtgärder och arbetsmetoder kunde urskiljas. Metoder inom Lean som 5S, Kaizen och TQM (Total Quality Management) ansågs kunna lämpa sig för fallstudien. Analysarbetet inspirerade även till att utveckla förslag till en ny arbetsmetod: 5S Administration Plus. Arbetsmodellen talar för vikten att standardisera arbetsrutiner, följa upp och utvärdera för att bibehålla förbättringsarbetet.

     

    Studiens teoretiska bidrag talar för hur kombinationen av metoder inom Lean kan tillämpas som effektiviseringsverktyg i en administrativ orderhanteringsprocess. Det praktiska bidraget svarar på studiens syfte och frågeställning angående hur orderhanteringsprocessen kan effektiviseras.

    Abstract [en]

    Interest in sustainability from the corporate sector is evidenced by over 13,000 companiesin 160 countries that have signed the United Nations Global Compact. In thiscontext, a number of tools, initiatives, and approaches (TIAs), e.g., circular economy,corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, life cycle assessment, and sustainabilityreporting have been developed by and for corporations to engage and promote sustainabilitywithin their systems. Each of the TIAs has advantages when addressingsustainability issues and the company system's elements, but it has disadvantages indealing with their complexities and interactions. Relying only on one TIA results in alimited contribution to sustainability, whereas using too many TIAs wastes resourcesand energy. The Corporate and Industrial Voluntary Initiatives for Sustainability(CIVIS) has been proposed to better combine the TIAs. A survey was developed toinvestigate the use of 24 TIAs. The survey was sent to a database of 5,299 organisations(of which 3,603 were companies), from which 202 responses were obtained.The responses were analysed using ratio analysis, principal component analysis, andcluster analysis. The responses show that some TIAs are well known and providegood results when used, for example, corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability,and Global Reporting Initiative reports. The analyses show a number ofgroups of the TIAs that can help to better combine them. The paper updates theCIVIS framework in order to provide clearer guidance on how to combine the TIAs. Acombination of between four and six initiatives appears to be most effective way topromote sustainability. The TIAs can help to promote sustainability in corporations,but they need to be combined correctly in order to address holistically the fourdimensions of sustainability, the system elements, and stakeholders, while avoidingduplication of tasks and wasting resources.

    Corporate sustainability has recently been challenging traditional business models that have been based on value proposition, creation and capture. There has been a steady increase in publications using the term “sustainable business models”; however, there have been few that have theoretically defined or characterized the term, and in most cases, they just apply the term. Seven peer‐reviewed papers were selected that aimed to define and explain sustainable business models and that have been widely cited. The papers were analyzed by assessing the elements and activities covered using the corporate sustainability framework, and by comparing them against four approaches to explain organizations. The paper proposes a definition and framework for more sustainable business models aimed at integrating organizational approaches, the company system, stakeholders, change and sustainability dimensions, thus providing a more holistic and systemic approach to discourses on sustainable business models.

    Abstract [en]

    There has been an increase in sustainable development (SD) integration into Higher Education Institutions' (HEIs) curricula. Several tools have been developed to assess SD in HEIs; however, only a few have focussed on curricula assessment, such as the “Sustainability Tool for Assessing UNiversities' Curricula Holistically.” Curricula assessment can provide an overview on how courses and programmes incorporate SD. This paper analyses the factors affecting the incorporation of SD in curricula using a survey sent to a database of 4,099 European contacts, with a response rate of 9.85%. The responses were analysed using descriptive statistics, t test, ANOVA, and correlations. The analyses showed that (a) teaching in European courses covers many issues of sustainability in a fairly good balance, with the exception of social issues that are the least addressed; (b) there are correlations between the economic, environmental, social, and cross‐cutting themes; (c) females tend to teach SD in a more balanced way than men; (d) the HEIs types have no influence on how SD is being taught, but the education level has; and (e) some countries, in the case of this research, Italy and Spain, may show more interest, yet the average results tended to be lower than those others, in this research, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Curricula assessment provides a diagnostic of SD incorporation and the factors that affect it. This can help educators improve their courses and provide students with better SD skills and insights

    Corporate Sustainability Initiatives: Their use and results2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Corporate leaders and employees have been increasingly recognising their role in contributing to sustainability. In this context, different voluntary tools, approaches, and initiatives have been developed by and for corporations to engage with sustainability. Each initiative has advantages with respect to scope and focus for the sustainability dimensions and the company system’s elements, but it has certain disadvantages when it comes to dealing with the complexity and broadness of sustainability. Relying on one initiative can result in a limited and narrow contribution to sustainability and curtail coverage of the company’s system and using too many tools wastes resources and energy due to duplication in tasks. The paper provides an analysis of the use of twenty-four of the most widely used initiatives (e.g. life cycle assessment, eco-design, cleaner production, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability reporting) by companies. A survey was developed for investigating the importance of how sustainability has been embedded in organisations. Most of the questions were on a five-point scale (extremely important to not at all important or completely agree to completely disagree) and rankings. The survey was applied using the online survey tool Qualtrics (2018). The survey was sent to a database of 5,299 contacts from different organisations (of which 3603 were companies) obtained from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) database, and personal contacts. Of the responses 215 were from companies, but only 189 provided useable responses for the tools and approaches used, of which 27 were from Sweden.The tools most widely used were Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Sustainability, and GRI reports (in the top quintile) by all companies, and Corporate Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility, Eco-efficiency, and Socially/Sustainable Responsible Investment by Swedish companies. The tools least used (in the lowest quintile) were Factor X, The Natural Step, SA8000, and ISO 26000 by all companies, and Factor X, SA8000, Industrial ecology, ISO 26000, EMAS, AA1000, and The Natural Step by Swedish companies. For all the companies, 5.6 tools in average provided good results, 6.5 some results, 2.5 no perceived results, and 0.1 negative results. There are some initiatives that are well known and provide results (some and good) when used, such as corporate social responsibility, corporate sustainability, GRI reports, and eco-efficiency). There are some initiatives that are not known/not used (e.g. Factor X, The Natural Step, SA8000, and ISO26000). The most widely know initiatives focus mainly on management and strategy, and assessment and reporting with a broad sustainability perspective. In general, the four more widely known initiatives have a good ratio of results versus no results. The cluster and analysis and PCA groups can serve as guides to decide which initiatives to combine in order to address the company system and sustainability dimensions. A combination between four to six initiatives should provide the most efficient way to address sustainability. There have been many initiatives proposed to contribute to sustainability by and for corporations. To better achieve this, the initiatives need to be combined efficiently in a holistic way to address the company and sustainability dimensions.

    Abstract [en]

    There has been considerable progress in the incorporation of SD into the curricula of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), where European HEIs have been leaders. This has included research on competences for sustainable development, and how to deliver such competences through pedagogical approaches; however, there has been limited research on the connection between how courses are delivered (pedagogical approaches) and how they may affect sustainability competences. A survey was developed to investigate sustainability being taught, sustainability competences delivered, and pedagogical approaches used in European Higher Education Institutions. The survey was sent to a database of more than 4,000 contacts of teachers and professors in Europe from which 390 complete responses (9.80%) were obtained. The social dimension of sustainability was the least addressed at 18%, while the other dimensions (economic, environmental, and cross-cutting) were addressed almost equally at between 27% and 28%. A correlation analysis was done between a) the Contribution to sustainability, b) Strength of competences, and c) Strength of pedagogical approaches, which show a stronger correlation between Strength of competences to Contribution and Strength of pedagogical approaches to Strength of competences than between the Strength of pedagogical approaches and Contribution was lower. A correlation analysis was then carried out between the sustainability STAUNCH® dimensions (economic, environmental, social, and cross-cutting themes) and the competences. The analysis showed that the correlations are stronger in the cross-cutting themes, followed by the social, the environmental, and the economic ones. Finally, a correlation analysis was carried out between the competences and the pedagogical approaches. The results obtained were between 0.0426 and 0.5555. A comparison of the survey results and the theoretical framework (see Lozano et al., 2017) was carried out to detect the differences. Three pedagogical approaches deliver the most competences (Eco-justice and community, Project and/or problem-based learning, and Community service learning). The updated framework shows that there is a general perception that the pedagogical approaches may deliver the sustainability competences, with some particular exceptions, such as Case studies, Supply chain/Life cycle analysis, and Lecturing. The updated framework provides a more precise perspective on how sustainability competences can be better delivered in class, and how to better deliver the ‘Full Monty’ of sustainability competences.

    Ports are under increasing pressure to become more sustainable. Although some ports have been including sustainability into their operations, this has been mainly done from economic and environmental perspectives and technological or policy‐related approaches, while there has been little research on organisational change management for sustainability. This paper analyses organisational change efforts for sustainability at the Port of Gävle, Sweden. Twenty‐three face‐to‐face interviews were conducted with various stakeholders. The findings show that there were differences in perception of sustainability; but similarities in the drivers for and the barriers to sustainability (with some key differences between the internal and external stakeholders). This research shows that, in their journey towards becoming more sustainable, ports have to take a holistic approach encompassing the four dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, social, and time); their stakeholders (internal and external); and legislative, technological, financial, cultural/social, voluntary initiatives, and organisational change management approaches.

    Organizations (i.e., civil society, corporations, and public sector organizations) havebeen instrumental in driving sustainability. In the last decade, there has been anincreasing interest in organizational sustainability, and an increase of organizationalchange management for sustainability. Although, there have been many effortsaimed at incorporating sustainability in organizations, incorporating, integrating, andinstitutionalizing sustainability in organizations is still under-researched. A survey wasdeveloped for investigating the importance of how sustainability has been embeddedin organizations’ system elements. The survey was sent to a database of 5,299contacts from different organizations worldwide. From the total, 281 useable responses(6.78%) for the organizational change part were obtained. The variables analyzed weremainly ordinal scales, therefore, non-parametric methods were used for the analyses,including descriptive, Friedman test for ranking, and Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon testsfor comparisons.More than 90%of the responding organizations have been working withsustainability for more than 5 years. The main driving forces for sustainability have beenmotivated equally by external stimuli and internal factors. The focus on sustainability andrecognition of the impacts that the organization has are fairly aligned. The findings showthat the main areas, from the start and during the changes, have been on governance,management and strategy, and operations and production. The majority of the changeswere effected between six and seven systems elements, which indicates a large degreeof institutionalization. The comparison tests show that the nature of the organization playsa key role for where the sustainability changes start, and how the changes affect systemelements. The research highlights that it inconsequential where sustainability changesstart, as long as sustainability is adopted throughout all the system elements, includinginternal and external stakeholders. Planning sustainability changes must address its fourdimensions holistically, as well as technical, managerial, and organizational issues, andthe organization’s stakeholders.

    Sustainability is aimed at addressing environmental and socio-economic issues of this generation and future ones. Sustainability requires the engagement of stakeholders, as highlighted by Agenda 21 where stakeholder engagement and participation in economic, environmental and social change as one of its most important themes. The purchasing power of public-sector organizations can increase considerable the demand for sustainable products and services can be promoted, set a trend for other organizations and enlarge the market for sustainable products or services. Collaboration is a sine qua non of sustainable public procurement, since it harvests its benefits from differences in perspectives, knowledge and approaches, solving problems while at the same time offering benefits to all those involved in the process. Most sustainable public procurement discussion have focused on the interactions between procurer and suppliers. The triple helix helps to explain to the relations between university-industry-government. It also represents social innovation. The quadruple helix model is an extension of the triple helix, where the fourth helix of civil society is added. The quintuple helix model is based on the earlier helix models but are also take natural environments of society into account. This includes stakeholders such as local communities, employees, shareholders, business partners, suppliers, customers, public authorities and NGOs. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to SPP by proposing to move from engaging only supplier and procurer to a collaborative approach of the quadruple helix. The chapter is empirically based on a function procurement project (of lightening) in Bollnäs, Sweden, focusing foremost on economic sustainability and aiming to develop a quadruple helix model of public procurement. The Bollnäs municipality had a need for changing old roof and lightning and makes the schools and preschools local more flexible for different activities and individual needs. The procurement was done in a collaborative quintuple helix process and focusing on innovation within a holistic approach. The procurement was designed to achieve an effect on flexibility/modularity, sustainability in environment aspect and increased knowledge. The smallest company/supplier was able to win the contact because the process focused on new solutions/innovation. To work in collaborative quintuple helix process give a higher effect and outcome than just the contract.     Purchases account for a large proportion of companies’ turnover. It has therefore long been an important factor to work efficiently with purchasing to achieve increased profitability in companies. Because of the importance of efficient purchasing, the interest in the purchasing process has increased. The existing research, on the other hand, is primarily aimed at how large companies can achieve competitiveness from the purchasing process. Thus, there is limited research on how small companies can efficiently manage their purchasing process. The study has been carried out with a case study at a small manufacturing company with the aim of investigate and recommend how small manufacturing companies can manage their purchasing process in an efficient way. The case study has used a deductive approach where the work began with the collection of existing theory linked to the purpose of the study. Based on the existing theory, the interview questions have been designed to investigate how the purchasing process can look at small manufacturing companies. These interviews laid the foundation for the study's empirical material.

     

    A comparison between the theoretical framework and empirical data has identified important factors for an efficient purchasing process in small manufacturing companies. This is presented in a recommendation model. Generally, it is significant that every step of the purchasing process gets enough focus because all the steps are based on each other.  To forget about parts of the purchasing process will negatively affect the efficiency. It is also important to have durability in mind when performing these steps. Using tools from the Lean philosophy can also help small manufacturing companies to streamline the purchasing process. The tools that the study has found useful have been to eliminate waste and to make use of continuous improvements and respect for people.

    Many types of models have been developed to analyse multi-echelon supply chains. These models tend to rely on certain assumptions which might be too restrictive to be used in practical applications. In this paper we present a decision support system developed for a manufacturing company to aid decision making in both manufacturing and distribution strategy. The model is based on the assumptions of the decision-makers instead of relying on a preexisting model architecture, which guarantees that the assumptions made are not too restrictive for practical use. The decision support system is based on agent-based modelling. The model was done in close co-operation with the personnel from the case company, and emphasis was based on how the company can use the model in decision making without requiring any special expertise in developing the supply chain alternatives. By using agent-based modelling we were able to take the central assumptions into account and create a decision support system, which the supply chain manager can use to evaluate various supply chain alternatives.

    In industries, successful logistics management delivers higher performance and value (time, cost, profits, and quality). Projects involving ports logistics systems are complex to manage due to the level and number of entities to manage, such as the expensive equipment units and the interconnection of the flows of goods and information. In these complex projects, it is difficult to conduct experiments on the real logistics system to help management predict future strategies due to high costs, time and infrastructure constrains. Therefore, to achieve the objectives of managing ports logistics system it requires that managers select the best strategic tools and methods. Simulation is one of the best predictive and strategic tools which allows the use of real-time, real-world data collection to stage mathematical analyses of the “what-if” scenarios.

    This thesis presents a simulation model for a case study on the port container terminal transportation of the port of Gävle in Sweden. In this model, a simulation approach is developed with a high software engineering maintainability that enables companies to analyse and study various scenarios that are motivated by changes in different inputs to measure their impact on the outputs that include throughput, resource utilization and waiting times. This study method adopted a simulation that covered both qualitative and quantitative research approaches.

    The main contributions of this study are: (i) developing a simulation program helps improve visibility in decision making process at port industry.(ii) providing a guideline for designing the maintainability of simulation models (iii) The simulation model has proved to be an industrial solution for the case company and its various stakeholders.

    Abstract [en]

    Logistics is an integral component in making the production process more efficient in companies. An important concept in logistics is lead time, the time it takes for a product to go through the process from inbound and outbound to the customer. A normal logistical process comprises the initial receival of goods, controls upon arrival and further quality controls carried out before the product ends up in the storage. The delivery process is a central process with many sub-processes including varying working methods and routines that can result in permeating inefficiencies in the company if they aren’t done properly.

    The purpose of the study is to identify causes of inefficiency that might cause extended lead times and reduced productivity in the delivery process. This is achieved by studying the internal workflow and routines of Volkswagen Parts Logistics delivery process. 

    This study’s based on a case and the data is gathered by semi-structured interviews and observations at Volkswagen Parts Logistics. Thereafter the results are analysed through literature and scientific articles. 

    The study first identifies one cause of inefficiency through factors such as simplification, synchronization, communication and integration. To identify the root-cause, a root-cause analysis has been used on these factors, which are then compiled into a cause and effect diagram and finally six factors have been explained. From the analysis and discussion of the six factors, four improvement suggestions have been submitted to Volkswagen Parts Logistics. The suggestions included education & training, standardized working methods, understanding the whole process and cooperation between groups.

    The study presents a scientific gap regarding the efficiency improvement of lead time with Human Lean aspect with a focus on the delivery process. The study contributes to the gap through the six factors and improvement suggestions based on analysis and discussion.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to understand how cross-functional integration contributes to the market orientation of a company that strives to increase market responsiveness. A case study in the Brazilian beverages industry was conducted and empirical data was collected through fourteen in-depth interviews from various functions within the company. The findings indicate that cross-functional integration enables the company to achieve market orientation through two main processes: product launch and customer complaints. Cross-functional integration enables a company to disseminate knowledge about organizational dynamics at both departmental and individual levels, to generate interdependency, to improve the awareness about the internal needs, and to improve the internal knowledge about the customer. This study shows that practitioners need to establish cross-functional integration, as it contributes to the market orientation of a company. Internal knowledge enables practitioners to create value through products and services, while still preserving the corporate image. It also shows that cross-functional teams and meetings are necessary to achieve market orientation in a company.

    Abstract [en]

    This study reviews literature on paradoxical tensions between value co-creation and capture in interorganizational relationships (IORs). The purpose of this review is to make a re-evaluation of the literature by engaging a paradox theory lens, thereby identifying factors that render tensions salient and factors that lead to virtuous or vicious cycles. This review of 143 articles reveals factors that make tensions salient; these relate to plurality (e.g. coopetition), scarcity (e.g. lack of experience with IORs), change (e.g. changes in collaboration scope) or combinations thereof (e.g. IORs in weak appropriability regimes). Results also uncover factors that resolve paradoxical tensions of value co-creation and capture, thus spurring virtuous cycles (e.g. carefully mixing trust and contracts), as well as factors that promote vicious cycles, owing to the emphasis on either value co-creation or capture (e.g. myopia of learning). This review also uncovers a new category of factors that may stimulate either virtuous or vicious cycles, depending on the extent to which they are enforced. This finding expands the value co-creation–capture paradox resolution, and brings to light new dynamics in the paradox framework of dynamic equilibrium. The authors thus contribute by: (1) reassessing the existing literature and applying paradox theory to the well-known hazard of value co-creation and capture; (2) highlighting factors that amplify paradoxical tensions related to this hazard; and (3) outlining factors that solve the paradox by embracing its contradictory poles and factors that hinder paradox resolution by emphasizing either value co-creation or appropriation.

    Today's competitive and changing market, places high demands on companies ability to develop new products and is considered crucial for their survival. 40% of all new products are estimated to fail at launch and only one out of 7-10 products have a successful sale. The product development process includes all different activities that gradually transform a product, from idea to launch. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges in the product development process is to control these functions and integrate them with each other. Through integrated product development, collaboration between different functions can be improved and they can be involved at an earlier stage in the process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of a more integrated work between the different functions in the product development process at a major manufacturing company. This work has been performed through a case study at a larger manufacturing company that has a complex product development process with many activities and several functions involved. To collect the empirical material, qualitative data collection methods in the form of semi-structured interviews and document collection have been used. The empirical material together with previous research in the subject has formed the study's analysis and discussion. Furthermore, the conclusion was based on the result of the discussion and analysis. The study's empirical evidence shows that the functions of the case company are in various degrees involved in the product development process and that some functions are given priority. This lead, among other things, to delayed projects, not fully utilized competence and a lack of holistic view. Furthermore, the different functions within the company have a lack of understanding of each other's work. The company needs to improve communication internally since handover in the product development process often fails. Mail has become a major part of the communication and collocation has improved the function's interaction. The company wants to standardize the activities in the product development process to create a more uniform way of working in the organization. The results of this study indicate that integrated work between the functions has a positive effect on the product development process. However, there are factors that make the integrated work more difficult. By working more integrated within the process, this study suggests that the holistic approach for functions would be improved, priorities would be better and that understanding of others' work would increase. Furthermore, a more integrated way of working would help to minimize time from idea to launch.

    This paper investigates the feasibility of different logistics concepts applicable in a third-generation port (first-and-foremost, just-in-time approach for a given case). In this regard, a simulation model imitating the work of a real third-generation port was developed. Four experiments with proposed logistics solutions have been configured and evaluated in the simulation model. They differed by the size and number of shipping consignments to the port, deployed truck fleet, etc. The research shows that effective material transfers from the plant to the port can be provided, if a ‘pulling’ type of logistics system is applied instead of the traditional ‘pushing’ system. This alternative allows goods to be delivered just-in-time with the minimum labour costs and material resources.

    Food waste has formidable detrimental impacts on food security, the environment, and the economy, which makes it a global challenge that requires urgent attention. This study investigates the patterns and causes of food waste generation in the hospitality and food service sector, with the aim of identifying the most promising food waste prevention measures. It presents a comparative analysis of five case studies from the hospitality and food service (HaFS) sector in Malaysia and uses a mixed-methods approach. This paper provides new empirical evidence to highlight the significant opportunity and scope for food waste reduction in the HaFS sector. The findings suggest that the scale of the problem is even bigger than previously thought. Nearly a third of all food was wasted in the case studies presented, and almost half of it was avoidable. Preparation waste was the largest fraction, followed by buffet leftover and then customer plate waste. Food waste represented an economic loss equal to 23% of the value of the food purchased. Causes of food waste generation included the restaurants’ operating procedures and policies, and the social practices related to food consumption. Therefore, food waste prevention strategies should be twofold, tackling both the way the hospitality and food service sector outlets operate and organise themselves, and the customers’ social practices related to food consumption.

    There has been an increasing consumer demand for local and organic food as they are considered to be more sustainable, ecological and healthier. The ‘conventional’ long food distribution system is not sufficient to fulfill the current needs. Consequently, short distribution systems for local and organic food have been gaining popularity, that is not only sustainable but also contributes to food security and satisfies local consumer demand. One such short distribution systems are alternative food networks (AFNs). The AFNs have emerged as a promising provisioning system for local and organic food that promotes economical, environmental and social sustainability and respect for farming tradition. However, the AFNs are facing challenges in increasing the distribution of local and organic food in the long term. The purpose of the paper is to make a review of the existing short food distribution systems for local and organic food and propose a research agenda. In order to achieve this, a literature review is conducted and different food distribution channels within AFNs are studied. The challenges for each food distribution channel are identified and then compared to ‘conventional’ distribution systems. The main finding of the study is a framework of main challenges of short food distribution channels within AFNs. The practical implication is generic criteria to consider while designing a short food distribution system that closely connects consumers and farmers of local and organic food. The policy implication is to create favorable conditions to encourage short food distribution systems in the long term.

    Mejselhammaren är ett verktyg som används inom byggbranschen och kommer i olika storlekar beroende på användningsområde (se Figur 1). Arbetet med maskinerna är tungt och slitsamt för den fysiska hälsan, mestadels på grund av de vibrationer som användaren utsätts för. Det är svårt att följa de rekommenderade riktlinjer som finns angående arbetstider för maskinerna då dessa riktlinjer gör att arbetet oftast tar längre tid. Problemet blir att användaren utsätts för skadliga vibrationer under en längre tid, vilket i sin tur resulterar i arbetsskador i fingrar, handleder och underarmar, där bland annat blodkärlen påverkas. Syftet med detta examensarbete har varit att förbättra de ergonomiska aspekterna hos mejselhammaren med fokus på de vibrationer användaren utsätts för. Detta har jag valt att göra genom att använda mig av en designprocess där jag delar upp projektet i olika faser med start i Research och Analys. Här intervjuar jag användare och analyserar ergonomin i olika arbetsställningar samt gör marknadsanalys där jag jämför existerande maskiner och ställer dem mot varandra. I denna fas genomförs också research inom fysik för att förstå hur vibrationer sprider och beter sig. Sedan genereras idéer genom 3D skiss för att finna lösningar på de ergonomiska problemen. Där testades olika former av handtag, olika lösningar för problemområden så som tyngd och arbetsvinklar, men även vibrationsdämpare i olika material. Sedan gick jag tillbaka för att utvidga kunskaperna i fas två av Research och Analys, där jag gick ännu djupare in i fysiken och undersökte andra områden med liknade problematik. Resultatet av den nya kunskapen användes sedan i ett experiment där olika vätskors förmåga att dämpa vibrationer undersöktes. Denna kunskap togs sedan vidare in i ett koncept där vätskan utgör en viktig roll i att motverka vibrationerna som sprids vidare till användaren. Valet av koncept grundar sig i att motverka vibrationerna samtidigt som lösningen inte blir alltför radikal att använda utifrån användarens perspektiv. Handtagets greppvänlighet har även justerats för att passa bättre för en bredare grupp användare, där storleken har förminskats och avtryckaren förflyttats för att tillåta ett mer avslappnat grepp.

    Detta är ett examensarbete inom Design och formgivning, som är genomförd med två övergripande metoder; designprocess och fallstudie. Syftet med detta examensarbete var att utforska hur entreprenörer och inkubatorbolag systematiskt kan arbeta ekonomisk-, social-, och ekologisk hållbart från start i produkt, tjänst och företag. Kopplat till detta syfte var också att undersöka hur en företagsinkubator (Movexum), som eget företag, kan inkludera ekonomisk-, social- och ekologisk hållbarhet i sin egen organisation.

    I den här forskningsrapporten undersöks vetenskaplig litteratur inom hållbarhet och företagande samt hållbarhetsteorier. Det har även omfattat benchmarking av internationella och lokala företag för att finna metoder, verktyg och inspiration. Workshop, observationer och intervjuer för Movexum, entreprenörer och inkubatorbolag har ägt rum, för att skapa en övergripande hållbarhetsbild av Movexums verksamhet, inskrivna entreprenörer och inkubatorbolag hos Movexum. Det för att förstå problem och behov utifrån att arbeta systematiskt med hållbarhet i det egna företaget. Ur all insamlad information har ett förslag på en guidemanual tagits fram till Movexum, entreprenörer och inkubatorbolag för att informera om hållbarhet, hållbarhetsteorier och användbara hållbarhetsverktyg. Genom guiden kan de kartlägga och identifiera vilken hållbarhetsteori de arbetar med i sitt företag eller önskar att arbeta mer med, för att få olika tips på hållbarhetsverktyg att använda genom att utvärdera, integrera och skapa ett mer hållbart företag tillsammans med sin affärscoach.

    Denna forskningsrapport kan vara till nytta för andra inkubatorverksamheter som vill skapa kunskap hur hållbarhet kan integreras i inkubatorverksamheter och för entreprenörer och inkubatorbolag i deras företag. Den kan beprövas i andra inkubatorverksamheter och utveckla möjligheter och idéer till att arbeta systematiskt med hållbarhet från start.

    Globalization, shorter product life cycles and larger product variation has increased the competition for industrial companies in today's business environment. This creates a higher need for an efficient production where reduction of throughput time has proved to be a crucial efficiency factor. Production lead time, which is a part of the total throughput time, has gained limited attention in previous research. Therefore, this study aimed to design and evaluate a model for assembly lines, which analyzes it and makes it more efficient, especially focusing on production lead time. The model was later applied and evaluated at a company.   By conducting a literature review, interviews and observations with an abductive approach the purpose of the study was answered. A model was designed based upon ten identified factors, such as communication and quality, from both literature and the company. The model was then completed with suggested actions, such as 5S and supporting IT-systems, connected to the different factors. The structure of the model was inspired by a similar model, conducted earlier, but has been simplified and customized to the purpose of this study.   With the identified factors as a starting point, the model was applied to the company Eco Log AB by analyzing their harvester assembly line. This was completed with suggested actions. The model reached a satisfactory level by giving a clear picture of what factors were affecting the efficiency, allowing fast navigation between factors and actions and also the actions being seemingly suiting and relevant. To strengthen the generalization of the model, potentially, it can be applied to additional companies. Going more in-depth into each factor to find additional action propositions is perhaps a future development of the model.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate how companies address sustainability holistically and compare the practical results to theoretical findings. The holistic approach of sustainability includes four dimensions and five corporate system elements.

     

    Methods: For creating the theoretical framework a literature review was executed. Empirical data was gathered from a multiple case study. In total five case companies have been selected and five interviews have been conducted. Furthermore the interview guideline included a small survey. Empirical data was complemented by information from sustainability reports and companies website.

     

    Main findings: Sustainability is partly executed in differently in practical terms compared to theory research. The differences are mainly explained by the unique use of sustainability initiatives, which are adapted to companies circumstances.

     

    Academic contributions: Previously, only a few researchers investigated the combination of initiatives to provide a holistic sustainability approach. Furthermore a lack of practical research in the field of sustainability has been identified. This thesis contributes to close this gap by investigating five case companies regarding the use of multiple initiatives.

     

    Practical implications: Based on the findings a model was created by the authors. By applying this model and using recommended initiatives companies are able to establish a holistic sustainability approach, involving all sustainability dimensions and corporate system elements.

     

    Limitations: The interviews have been translated from German or Dutch into English, which increases the risk of wrong interpretations. Further the interview involved only one representative per company. Additionally the number of small case study companies and case companies from the service sector might limit the generalization of the results.
