    Relationships and Networks in the Processes of Establishment of Firms in Transitional Economies: The case of Scandinavian firms in Eastern and Central Europe2006Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

    Focus on the particular entry mode a firm uses to enter a new market, rather than the process of establishment dominates in extant literature. To fill this void, we apply an establishment process model developed from the network approach to illuminate the web of relationship forms embedded in the establishment process of two Scandinavian firms as they attempt to establish themselves in transition economies. In one case, the results show that Statoil’s process of establishment in Estonia was less time- and resource-consuming because the firm drew support from significant actors in their network of exchange relationships. In the second case, a lack of home and host country support for Scania in Croatia resulted in an arduous and costly process and less stable position in the market, with the firm’s position changing several times as different problems cropped up. In light of the findings from the two cases, theoretical and practical implications for managing the establishment process are discussed.

    Aim: My topic is based on my own experiences from living in the USA for a few years.  Eventually, I realized the differences between our cultures were greater than my expectations. With three children in school you are thoroughly exposed to the education system and it is natural to make comparisons. This study is a comparative assessment of services offered in the areas of education and child-care. The aim for the study was to describe and evaluate service offered to families in Sweden and Virginia by using theories in marketing and service management. The primary aim is to highlight and discuss where is the best place to live.

    Interactive internationalization: the case of Swedish firms2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The extant literature stresses that having foreign market presence is imperative for most firms these days. However, how firms conceive of which foreign markets to enter, the entry mode to take and the resource commitments to make are not information or decision-making processes solely confined to a firm that internationalizes its activities. The purpose of this study is to provide deeper insights into (1) reasons for a firm to internationalize its business activities and (2) the extent to which an independent actor (s) actively collaborates with the internationalizing firm so as to jointly determine the choice of market, the mode of entry and the level of investment committed in the market to be entered and even after the entry (i.e. the on-going activities). Based on two multiple case studies, one major finding of the study shows that independent actors, with their interconnected networks, have played and are still playing a major role in influencing the internationalization processes of each of the two firms in this study.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences how gets on advertisements in the real estate industry and see how they have developed during the last 19 years when it comes to design an advertisement (layout) and media channel selection.

    The purpose is also to try to understand if the real estate agents own think that they market the house in the best way in order to get the prospective buyer to buy.

    Method: To collect the primary data I will do a comparison between advertisements in 1990 and 2009. I have done qualitative interviews with real estate agents but also collect expert opinions from marketers which are well informed in advertising matters. I have collect secondary data from books, Internet and also from old and new newspapers.

    Result & conclusion: This study shows that the real estate agent two decades ago did not have enough knowledge of how to market a house. However, there has been a considerable progress since than. Today real estate agents have the necessary knowledge for marketing a house. The conclusions are based on the comparison of advertisements. Marketing experts and real estate agents confirm this conclusion. 

    Suggestion for future research: It would be interesting to investigate how real estate agents use newspaper advertising to market themselves and their offices. Furthermore, it would be interesting to make an comparison between advertising in two different countries, e.g. the US and Sweden.

    Contribution of the thesis: This study shows that the development of advertisement have advanced during the last 19 years. This can establish.

    The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the subject areas of communication and organizational theories. And what is significant in the daily work within Länsförsäkringar Gävleborg regarding to our subject areas which have been chosen.

    This thesis establishes that a sense of participation is significant and fundamental for communication. This is something that the theories we investigated advocates and correspond with the reality presented in the thesis. Furthermore we have also discovered that the agencys have devoloped their own ways of working and so called subcultures, which the co-workers are comfortable with. We believe that more active knowledge dispersion between the agencys is necessary and further more when the organization is based on knowledge.

    Extant literature has, to date, focused almost entirely on the use of interpersonal buyer-seller interactions during the process of creating service outcomes. This paper aims to fill this void by contributing to extant knowledge on customer interactions with technology-based self-service delivery options. The extent to which technological interface that enables customers to produce a service independent of a direct service employee involvement is used by hotels of various categories in France is, thus highlighted in this paper. It is, however, assumed in this paper that there can be significant dissimilarities in the response time when using e-mails to communicate with customers. These dissimilarities are investigated on the basis of an e-mailing action that encompasses sending a typical room-booking request to French hotels. Exhaustive samples of 240 hotels spread out in 120 cities located in France constituted the target group. One-way ANOVA testing differences between means was used to assess the impact of the hotel category (independent variable) on response time (dependent variable) among hotels in France. Our findings found significant dissimilarity in responsiveness across hotels categories. The implication of the findings for management is basically the fact that responsiveness is most likely the first step in providing good quality technology-based buyer-seller interactions to create service outcomes using the Internet/e-mail. One of the major concepts in customer relationship management is speed at which firms respond to questions and problems during the service encounter.

    Abstract [en]

    Objective: The aim is to make a marketing plan for VSK bandy. This marketing plan is the basis to attract more audience to the arena at game days.

     

    Method: A qualitative and quantitative method was used. The qualitative part is reported in the chapter about empirical foundations and the quantitative part has been used for the plan of action.

     

    Result & Conclusions: The result shows that VSK bandy has come a long way when it comes to working for sponsors and for the audience. For sponsors, it is now about creating surplus value. It has become more important to work so they feel that they get something back from them. It is also very difficult to focus on a specific target group, but all are welcome to contribute to the club. Although they are in the forefront of attracting audience and businesses, there are certain parts they can supplement into the program they are using. These are presented in the plan of action.

     

    Suggestions for future research: To compare VSK bandy to similar clubs regarding their work with attracting audiences. Also to investigate the suggestions for the Action plan further; i.e. look into if the plan can lead to a bigger audience.

     

    Contribution of the thesis: It is mainly contributed to a deeper understanding of VSK Bandy. It is also my hope that this study will contribute to VSK Bandy and they continued work for their audience and sponsors.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the differences that arise when the football clubs in the “Allsvenskan”, the highest soccer leauge in Sweden, can choose between two different methods to account their externally acquired players. Given that the turnover is an important role for the clubs performance, it is of interest to see the effect of these accounting methods. Whe have limited ourselves to the “Allsvenskan”.

     

    Method: As a method for collecting data for this project we believed that a qualitative approach would fit the best because we wanted a deeper insight into how it works in reality. Information about these two accounting methods, we got through the interviews, both by phone and by e-mail contact. We also studied the annual reports from various football clubs in the allsvenskan to see how they presented their players acquisitions, which is the basis for the empirical part of this thesis.

     

    Result & Conclusions: In the discussion and analysis section we show our conclusions that we have reached. We can show that there are differences in the balance sheet and income statement depending on wich accounting method the clubs use. And with the differences in the income statement there will also have an effect on the tax that the club pays. We will also show that the comparability between the different clubs will be suffering; this becomes important when the investor wants to invest in clubs.

     

    Suggestions for future research: We think that the problem with the difference in capital requirements of the “elitlicens” and the ”Swedish Companies Act” is an intresting topic to research further within. Clubs that operates as companies may receive the “elitlicens” but may also have to be forced to liquidate.

     

    Contribution of the thesis: The essay contributes to highlight the various methods to account for external acquisitions of players in football clubs and to demonstrate the effect of the different methods.

    Syftet med studien är att genom en deltagande observation på Intersport i Falun City skapa förståelse för vilka faktorer som leder till att omsättningen hämmas. Vi har kommit fram till att det är kommunikationen och samarbetet som är de mest betydande faktorerna som påverkar omsättningen i butiken. Kundfokus och kunskap har även de en betydande roll men vi tror inte att den är lika stor. Vi anser att om kommunikation och samarbete förbättras kan personalen tillsammans behandla de problem som dyker upp och kundfokus och kunskapen följer med.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – This paper has its focus on local initiatives in developing the work organization. Local initiatives describe how shop floor workers and middle managers initiate organizational change by developing ideas emerging in the daily operations. The purpose of this article is to elaborate on how and why such local initiatives emerge and develop.

    Design/methodology/approach – The paper combines theories about entrepreneurship and organizational change as a framework to understand local initiatives. Local initiatives contribute to the understanding of organizational change processes by emphasizing not only the voice of the managerial discourse but also the voice of local actors. The empirical findings are based on interviews in a paper pulp plant.

    Findings – Local initiatives are a way for shop floor workers and middle managers to translate work procedures into something that makes sense in their own context of daily operations. The intrapreneur acts not as a change agent for someone else's intentions but as a self appointed actor who initiates and drives the process of creating unequivocal interpretations of equivocal events.

    Research limitations/implications – The findings are based on a single case study.

    Practical implications – The paper stresses the importance for managers to find ways to deal with local initiatives. Generating and collecting ideas is the easy part, the challenge is to do something with the ideas received.

    Originality/value – A model is suggested that describes four different approaches to organizational change.

    Girls generally have poorer economic conditions in sports, in comparison with boys, something we have experienced ourselves since we’ve been active in high level for a long time. Angelica Lorsell told us about a business idea, which could benefit the elite athlete girls. The idea is to convey a membership card, "Elitkortet", where different partners offering targeted discounts that would make life easier for elite athlete girls. Angelica wished for comments and helps to successfully implement this concept. Our purpose in this essay is to make the dream of starting a business activity Elitkortet and what is required of us as entrepreneurs to make this come true. The literature describes certain traits that an entrepreneur should have in order to succeed, performance requirements, risk appetite and control needs. It’s important to write down the business concept to help set goals to strive for. If the entrepreneur has previous experience in the industry the new company will work within and it counts as a big advantage. There is no necessity to have a new product, by developing an "old" product or aiming a new target group you can succeed anyways. We started with various theories about business plans and have decided to create our own, Elitkortet business plan, which includes; business idea, product, manufacturing and technology, marketing plan, financing and financial spreadsheets, owners and organization, and risk analysis. In our empirical study we have gathered information about a possible start-up of the Elitkortet, and drafted a business plan for the Elitkortet. We have sought the information over the Internet, telephone, email, interviews, and went to counselling and on a start-up your own business course. To get a better picture about entrepreneurship, we have chosen to interview two entrepreneurs who started their businesses under different conditions. We’ve also described our feelings generated in the meetings with various instances and the people we’ve met. We have found that we could make our dream come true and start our company today. It is possible, both technically and organizationally, however, we don’t know if we are sufficiently risk-prone and willing to spend the time and effort required of us.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim: The aim of this study is that through qualitative interviews provide a greater understanding, and highlight the differences and similarities within, leadership in service and manufacturing companies. It also aims to establish whether any differences due to the focus of activity or if there are other reasons for the differences.

     

    Method: In my study I have used the qualitative approach; I've done because I try to put me into how various leaders think and act in different situations, I am also trying to figure out what leadership style they use. I've done six interviews of semi-standard nature; the interviews have been conducted on the premises of each respondent. The outcome of these interviews are reported in the empirical section and then connected to the theories in the analysis section. The results of my study will be presented finally in the section conclusions.

     

    Result & Conclusions: My conclusion is that I cannot find any significant differences in leadership orientation and leader's leadership style that depends on whether the leader's business is a service or manufacturing company. However, I can find many similarities with the biggest being that all the leaders whom I interviewed in this essay have a fundamentally democratic leadership style. From a larger perspective, I think that leadership and management style within the two different types of business, Service Company and Manufacturing Company is based on the same grounds.

     

    Suggestions for future research: To study the democratic leadership style deeper and try to find different nuances and approaches of the democratic leadership would be interesting. To quantitatively examine the leadership style of leaders in service compared to manufacturing companies, in order to statistically prove the leadership styles used would also be interesting. Or to compare young inexperienced leader with more experienced leaders. A further proposal for continued research is to compare female to male leaders.

     

    Contribution of the thesis: This paper has contributed to a better understanding of how leadership and leadership styles, looks at different leaders, different positions, in different types of businesses. The essay also makes clear the differences and similarities between leaders in service and manufacturing companies.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose:       The purpose of this essay is to gain insight into how companies look at recruiting through employment agencies – which the underlying rationale is to hire staff instead of employing and its advantages and disadvantages.

    Method:       A feasibility study followed by a qualitative study with interviews. The interview method was in unstructured form in which respondents were free to speak from their own frame of reference. A phone method was used in the booking of interviews.

    Problem:      In order to achieve maximum profitability, while maintaining quality and have fast delivery to the customers, companies are trying to reduce the part of capital that is tied up. It can therefore be a problem for companies when they employ someone permanently and after a period of time realizing that they no longer are in need of this person’s skills. The trend to hire staff instead of recruiting has because of this reason increased. What are the effects of this?

    Audience:     This study is aimed to companies who are interested in hiring staff or companies that hire staff already. But even for workers, prospective consultants and other stakeholders who are directly or indirectly related to this subject.

     

     

    Results:        Through this study, we have, based on our respondents, found out the underlying reasons for hiring of personnel and the advantages and disadvantages that entails. Advantages: flexibility, productive staff, avoiding staff shortages, competence and innovations. Disadvantages: lack of motivation, disloyalty, erosion of the corporate culture, morale, and that company could be in a position of dependence. Based on the survey, we have been able to draw conclusions that staff hiring also is a competitive advantage. It is important for companies to integrate consultants into the company with the staff to create a stronger sense of community. It is also important to have clarity on consultants to be recruited.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim: The aim of this thesis is to do a research about the users’ conceptions to the K-project. The K-project is a simplifying work of today’s accounting regulations performed by the Swedish Accounting Standards Board. The K-project is divided into four categories and the companies are divided into each category depending on its size. The study is limited by only focusing on a part of the K-project, the K2-regulation. The K-project is one of many ways to simplify the accounting regulations and a question asked in the study is if the final result will be successful this time.

    Method: We have chosen to adopt the qualitative method in this study by interviewing four respondents employed at a number of different accountant firms. We claim that this is the best approach since the regulations can still be considered new and therefore knowledge about it is small among many companies. The information given from the interviews were put together, analyzed, compared and finally connected to the theoretical reference frame. We have drawn our own conclusions due to that result.

    Result & Conclusions: The result shows that the opinion about the K2-regulation varies.  All respondents agree about the K2-regulation being a good idea since the need of simplifying today´s accounting regulations for smaller companies is large. On the other hand the respondents’ opinions differ when it comes to the layout, final result and the instructions. Some respondents are positive to the result when others claim that the regulation hasn´t provided enough simplifications.

    Suggestions for future research: When this study was made the K2-regulation was a free choice whether to apply or not and according to that fact we would find it interesting to do a similar study when the regulation has been forced upon the companies, to see if the user´s opinions have changed. Another alternative to further studies would be to make a quantitative study to research if the regulation is used and in what scale.

    Contribution of the thesis: This thesis has contributed to an increased understanding for the users’ conceptions of the K2-regulation and today’s work to simplify accounting regulations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att ge en ökad förståelse för Venture capitalbolagen och dess portföljbolag. Tanken är sedan att koppla ihop Venture capitalbranschen med den rådande lågkonjunkturen för att se om branschen påverkats, och i så fall på vilket sätt.

    Metod: Uppsatsen är byggd på en kvalitativ studie. Den kvalitativa studien har utförts med hjälp av tre intervjuer, två via personliga möten och en via telefon. Litteratur och vetenskapliga artiklar har används för att bygga upp teorin.

    Resultat & slutsats: Författarna har kommit fram till att möjligheten att få Venture capital har minskat under lågkonjunkturen. En stor faktor är att nedgången på börsen lett till överallokering hos bland annat banker och försäkringsbolag som normalt är stora investerare i fonder med onoterade bolag. En annan faktor är att riskviljan hos investerarna har gått ner, vilket har resulterat i att det har blivit svårare att hitta saminvesterare. Bankernas utlåning har även minskat vilket lett till att många mindre bolag har svårt med att få kapital, vilket i sin tur lett till att efterfrågan på kapital har ökat, men inte utbudet.

    Förslag till fortsatt forskning: Förslag till vidare studier är att se problemet ur en entreprenörs synvinkel. En sådan studie kan ta mer tid att genomföra, men resultatet skulle vara intressant att jämföra från en entreprenörs perspektiv.

    Då samtliga respondenter påpekat att de lånefinansierade Private equity-bolagen drabbats hårdats av finanskrisen kan det vara intressant att forska kring buy-out inriktade investerare. De investeringar buy-outbolag gör kräver mer kapital, och med dagens klimat på lånemarknaden är de nästintill omöjligt att lånefinansiera till en investering.

    Uppsatsens bidrag: Uppsatsen bidrar genom att belysa problemet med finansiering till nya och små företag. Framförallt belyser den vilka problem som kan uppstå under en lågkonjunktur.
