Från pilsnerhumor till dejtingakuten: Reklamgenreutveckling under 1900-talet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to find some of the main developing tendencies in the advertisement genre during the period of 1930-2000. The analysis is based on three examples of Gevalia cinema and TV-advertisement. Research findings are the result of using theories from different but relevant sciences, which are media, linguistics and rhetoric. Media studies help to explain the influence of the society and technology development on the advertising business. Linguistics and rhetoric give the main methods and terminology for the basic as well as comparing analyses of the three advertisements in question. Results show unexpectedly homogeneous and strong development tendencies in both the visual product representation and the persuasive ability of the advertisement during the analysed period.

Strategic Interaction in Radio Interview Discourse2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study is focused on the interactional strategies used by interviewees in radio discourse, which are face-saving, relationship-securing and cooperative strategies. The interviewees’ speech is analysed according to their use of the selected discourse operators, which are the hedge you know, the personal pronoun you, personal address as well as greeting questions, information-seeking, reassuring and tag-questions. The results turned out to be almost similar to previous research. The face-saving strategy is shown to be male-dominant, while the relationship-securing and the cooperative strategies proved to have female dominance. The results are contrasted and reviewed by using two different kinds of normalization. The normalization is done both according to the percentage of the selected items and the percentage of the space used for every selected item and strategy.

    Abstract [sv]

Antoinette - A Hybrid Without a Home: Hybridity in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay investigates hybridity in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea with a focus on the main character Antoinette. Homi K Bhabha's theory of hybridity provides a way to analyze Antoinette's predicament as an outsider and threat to both the Caribbean society she is living in and her English husband. The aim of the essay is to examine the alienation and rejection of Antoinette in the light of her hybridity.

Drinking in the Panopticon: Female drinkers in Dorothy Parker´s stories2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main aim with this essay is to look how Dorothy Parker portrays women who drink. My main focus is at Dorothy Parker’s story “Big Blonde” but also her stories, “Dialogue at Three in the Morning”, “A Terrible Day Tomorrow”, “Just a Little One” and “A Woman in Green Lace”. Inspired by Ellen Lansky, who points out that Panopticon and Panopticism can be applied on all-male institutions and men, my analysis proves that Foucault’s Panopticism can be used to describe masculine control of female drunkenness. Women behave in a certain way to please inspectors in the Panopticon. I this essay I argue that there are two types of drinking women in Parker’s stories. The “modern” and the “controlled” woman, who both are forced to submission by Panopticism.

Verb Dynamics: a Study of Gender Roles in Blueprint A2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The teaching book is a very important device in schools and its potential impact can be considerable. This essay analyses how gender is established in one of the most common teaching books in upper secondary school,

Blueprint A. The study aims to find out if the teaching book is stereotypical concerning the issue of gender equality. The analysis is made with Halliday’s Functional Grammar Theory as theoretical approach and is compared to the guidelines of the Curriculum and the Educational Act. To fulfil the aim of this essay, three texts are analysed from a gender perspective. If the verbs are dynamic/stative, and if the subjects function as agents or not are the factors used to establish if there is a difference between how females and males are represented in the texts. The hypothesis is based on a previous study on the same teaching book but regarding another edition and course (Odén 2005). It is hypothesised that there are differences in how men and women are presented in the texts and that women are described as more stative while men are described in more dynamic terms. The conclusion of this essay is that females are established as more stative than males and therefore it can be argued that the teaching book does not satisfy the goals of the Curriculum or the Educational Act.

    Inclusive/exclusive ?: English as a lingua franca in the European Union2009In: World Englishes, ISSN 0883-2919, E-ISSN 1467-971X, Vol. 28, no 2, p. 208-223Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role which English maintains as a lingua franca is currently being conceptualized in differing ways. English as an international language, Euro-English, and English as a lingua franca are analyzed from two main perspectives; first, the relevance that such descriptions of English-language usage have for variety building (for mainland Europe); and second, the development of ELT ideologies, methodologies, and course materials which support efforts to incorporate intercultural communicative competence and identity into the instruction. It is maintained not only that the manner in which English is defined and appropriated in mainland Europe should facilitate the development of an endonormative variety, but also that the L2 English of the peoples of Europe should accommodate other Englishes across the Inner, Outer, and Expanding Circles. The English of mainland Europe, as it is conceptualized for ELT, can facilitate both Europeanization and globalization. A postcolonial theoretical argument is made for importing the world Englishes paradigm to Europe. For this to take place, traditional prescriptivist approaches, which perpetuate Inner Circle sociocultural hegemony and native-speakerism, need to be replaced with a foundation for ELT better geared to further the aims of mainland European L2 users of the English language.

Sexual Mysticism, Literary Politics, and the Myth of a "Normative" Lawrence1988Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The article examines critico-theoretical orthodoxies in relation to Lawrence's oeuvre. The debate between mainstream Lawrence critics and the feminist camp in respect to Lawrence's sexual the-ory is addressed. 'Literary politics,' and the growing movement among feminists to discredit Lawrence because of his apparent misogynist theories, is the central issue of this paper. I argue that it is correct to abhor Lawrence's theory of "phallic authority" and find it inappropriate that the established critical posture has been to ignore feminist response. Also, feminist framing, discourse, and technique, as well as male-orientated critical postures, are discussed.

Gå på knäna, vaddå, krypa eller?: Om idiomförståelse hos elever i grundskolans senare år2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

More than siblings?: A study of the incestuous relationship between Maggie and Tom in George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss2009Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Because of the many similarities between the life of George Eliot and the lives of Maggie and Tom Tulliver in The Mill on The Floss, Eliot’s novel has been understood as an autobiographical novel. The aim of the essay is to, by using a psychoanalytical perspective, examine if the fictional characters could be said to be engaged in an incestuous relationship even though they do not engage in a sexual relationship. Though their relationship never becomes sexual, there are factors which could support a claim that brother and sister are engaged in an non-sexual incestuous relationship.

Hur går det till att lära svenska?: En studie om svenska som andraspråksinlärares talade språk2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Barack Obama's memoir Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance (1995) has been an enormous public success since it was re-issued in 2004. Obama's narrative is a powerfully crafted account of a personal quest that rhetorically transverses over geographical boundaries and literary genres. What interests me about this work is how it poetically plaits personal history with cultural myth, unbolting fact with imagination. Textually contiguous with other African American stories of self-representation and liberation, Dreams from My Father strikes me as a potent narrative of self-inscription. To put it in its simplest performative expression, the narrator of this book asks "who am I" and in doing so writes itself into place, not as an identity found but as the subject in writing.

    Abstract [sv]

An English Language Textbook Study from a Gender Perspective2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate whether gender stereotypes are reinforced or not in a textbook commonly used in the upper-secondary English A course, Blueprint A version 2.0. This is an important question due to that gender equality is an important goal in our schools and in today’s society. This investigation shows that the textbook is not gender neutral. This indicates that schools need to discuss further what material should be used in schools in order to strive for gender equality.

An international comparative study on English writing proficiency in two secondary school settings2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In an increasingly globalized world with English as a lingua franca, European countries are competing in their efforts for their populations to speak English. The main goal of this study was to compare the English writing proficiency of one class in the Basque Country and one in

Sweden at the end of their compulsory education. Both classes took an essay test in which verb use, conjunction use, spelling and text length were measured. The Swedish students outperformed their Basque counterparts in almost every measured area, which was suggested

to be due to a combination of teacher-related factors (methodology, command of the language, use of the language and learning environment) and external factors (language typology, language input and student motivation). The teaching skills and command of English of Basque teachers should be improved as well as audiovisual tools and communicative approach introduced in order to compensate for the lack of language input and

    language use possibilities.

Manifestations of Manhood: Constructing Masculinity in Gloria Naylor's The Men of Brewster Place2009In: American Studies in Scandinavia, ISSN 0044-8060, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 61-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article explores representations of African American inert and masculinities in Gloria Naylor's 1998 novel The Men of Brewster Place, and compares them to those in The Women of Brewster Place (1982). The analysis places the more recent novel in the context of literary and cultural debates about black women's agency and racial solidarity, and in the socio-historical contexts of the civil rights movement and the Million Man March. Because the novel incorporates competing and conflicting discourses on African American masculinity, Naylors representations of men in The Men of Brewster Place are wrought with ambivalence, caught between a critical problematization of masculine and masculinist ideals, and are-inscription of those ideals.

En jämförelse mellan två reflektionsunderlag2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Male hierarchies and gender-balanced boards2008In: Indian Journal of Gender Studies, ISSN 0971-5215, E-ISSN 0973-0672, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 485-505Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study is to examine whether the established fact that men by far outnumber women in leading positions is an inherent unintentional characteristic of a hierarchy where appointments happen one by one on an individual basis, as opposed to boards where the members are appointed as a group. The sample consists of those appointed to the hierarchies as well as the boards of 36 state universities in Sweden. The main finding is that significantly more men are appointed in hierarchies than to group-composed boards. When the gendered distribution of those in leading positions becomes fully apparent, the last and final position in the hierarchy is significantly more often given to a woman. However, these women are much older than their male counterparts, a fact that makes it harder for them to reach the final step of the ladder. The article concludes with a discussion of whether the higher probability of appointing a woman as vice-president when both chair and president are men is a fair acknowledgement of an unfair gender distribution, or if there are other possible explanations.
