Genusperspektiv i naturvetenskaplig undervisning2006In: Naturfagsdidaktikkens mange facetter: Proceedings fra Det 8. nordiske Forskersymposium om undervisningen i naturfag / [ed] Lisbeth Bering, Jens Dolin, Lars Brian Krogh, Jan Sölberg, Helene Sörensen, Rie Troelsen, Köpenhamn: Danmarks Paedagogiska Universitets Forlag , 2006, p. 95-102Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Gender theory as a tool for analyzing science teaching2009In: Teaching and Teacher Education: An International Journal of Research and Studies, ISSN 0742-051X, E-ISSN 1879-2480, Vol. 25, no 2, p. 336-343Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines to what extent experienced teachers are aware of gender issues in the science classroom. It also explores how an introduction to gender theory might alter this awareness. Teachers wrote their reflections about a real classroom situation. They were then asked to analyse the same situation after having read texts that discussed gender theory concepts. The fourteen teachers' understanding about gender and society were challenged. Some teachers were able to analyse the case differently by applying gender theory, others discussed the case on a more general level, while one teacher showed signs of resistance regarding gender theory.

Gender theory as a tool for analysing science teaching2008In: Planning science instruction - from insight to learning to pedagogical practices: proceedings of the 9th Nordic Research Symposium on Science Education, 11th-15th June 2008, Reykjavík, Iceland, Reykjavík: School of education, University of Iceland , 2008, p. 168-170Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Attempts to reform science education have to a minor extent taken into account that gender issues may have an influence on the pupils, their learning and interest. Therefore, examples of using feminist or gender theories for analyzing or planning science education are difficult to find in the literature (Nyström 2007, Sinnes 2006). The aim of this study is to examine to what extent experienced teachers apprehend the gender order within the scientific classroom and also to explore if it is possible to achieve a change in these apprehensions. In-service teachers have unprepared written down their reflections about a real classroom situation, a case, and afterwards got the task of analyzing the situation once again after reading a gender theory. The teachers’ texts have been analyzed in several steps: first, the written material was analyzed to find and form categories of relevance; second, sections were raised that pointed out if the teachers had used the gender theory and in what way they had used it; and third, a comparison was made on an individual level of the teachers’ explanations in the two different tasks. The results show that the participating teachers’ understandings about gender and society were challenged ,which is expressed in different ways in their texts. One group of teachers was able to apply the theory on the concrete classroom event, another group had a discussion on a more general level, while one teacher showed a resistance to the theory and thereby also to the task. The fact that the teachers deepen and widen their interpretation of a real classroom’s event when they get access to a gender theory indicates that this method can be applied in teacher education. The usage of cases can be an instrument to link theories to practical work.

Utbildning för hållbar utveckling2009Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Male goldfish reproductive and physiology are severely affected by exogenous exposure to 17b-estradiol2001In: Aquatic Toxicology, ISSN 0166-445X, E-ISSN 1879-1514, Vol. 53, no 2, p. 139-152Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mature male goldfish were exposed to different concentrations of the natural hormone 17beta-estradiol (E2). Two methods of exposure were employed, via ingestion at 0, 1, 10 and 100 microg/g food and via the water at 0, 1 and 10 microg/l. The fish were exposed for 24-28 days during the spawning period. The males were then paired with an artificially induced, spawning female and their sexual behaviour was observed during a 15 min period. The physiological status of the fish was also examined with respect to GSI, presence of milt and spawning tubercles and the blood plasma concentration of E2. Despite the relatively short exposure period, exposure to physiological levels of E2 was shown to severely affect the male goldfish reproductive behaviour and physiology. In conclusion, the results from this study and the ability to interpret the effects on this well-studied species, show that the effects of E2, and possibly other estrogenic EDCs, have severe effects at several vital levels of male goldfish reproduction. The results also suggests that the hormone E2 can act as an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) in the environment.

The Indoor Climate of a Naturally Ventilated Church2009In: Healthy Buildings 2009, Sept 13-18, Syracuse, NY USA, IAQ , 2009, p. 1-4Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The indoor air climate of a church, with a total building volume of 9500 m3, was investigated from January to October, 2008. During this time, infiltration and ventilation measurements were performed at four periods ranging from 17 to 45 days. The local mean age of air was determined in several locations at different heights using passive samplers and homogeneous emission of PFTs. In addition, the temperature and relative humidity was measured at selected locations. The total infiltration of fresh air into the church was found to be mainly driven by the difference between indoor and outdoor temperature. The rate of infiltration ranges from 780 m3/h (deltat=14.8 degrees C) in January to 240 m3/h (deltat=3.5 degrees C) in August. The local mean age of air in the upper and lower air volumes were found to be roughly equal, both during the heating season and in the summer. This indicates that the air volume in the church is well-mixed throughout the year. Transient measurements to assess the effects of doors opening in the summer were also performed using pumped sampling.

Ventilation measurements combined with pollutant concentration measurements discriminates between high emission rates and insufficient ventilation2007In: IAQVEC 2007 Indoor Air Quality Ventilation and Energy Conservation: sustainable Buildings. P. 2, 2007, Vol. 2, p. 393-400Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

High local concentrations of a pollutant can be the result of high local emission rates of the pollutant or insufficient ventilation. Using tracer gases to map the ventilation in multi-zone buildings combined with measurements of the local pollutant concentration provide the means to discriminate between these causes. In a similar manner, the propagation rate of pollutants from a source to a target zone and the emission rate of the pollutants at the source may be determined quantitatively.

The paper presents both the theoretical framework for the techniques and experimental examples of the proposed methods.

Shake-Up Structures Calculated with the INDO/CI Method: CO Adsorbed on Ni(100) Clusters1996Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the chemisorption system CO/Ni(100), a comparison between available high resolution core level photoelectron spectra and spectra calculated by the INDO/CI method done for different nickel cluster sizes. A reassignment of some of the satellites is made. It is found that the asymmetry and the broadening of the main line mainly depends on substrate-substrate excitations, predominantly from the d-band to the s-band within the nickelsubstrate.

    Abstract [en]

The satellite structure of the Cls and Ols photoelectron spectra of chromium hexacarbonyl Cr(CO)(6) has been calculated by the INDO/CI method and compared with available high resolution core level photoelectron spectra. A reassignment of some of the lines is made. It is found that the satellite structure in both cases is dominated by excitations from metal-ligand bonding to metal-ligand antibonding Me(3d)-pi* orbitals, and that these shake-up excitations involve a significant charge transfer to the core ionized ligand from the rest of the molecule.

    Abstract [en]

Experimental high-resolution core photoelectron C1s and O1s shake-up spectra of molybdenum hexacarbonyl, Mo(CO)(6), are reported and compared with results of semiempirical INDO/CI calculations. Several hitherto unobserved peaks are identified and assigned. It is found that an intra- and inter-group classification can be used to describe the transitions. The transitions of lowest energy have Mo-CO inter-group character. Dynamical effects on the line widths of the experimental shake-up peaks are discussed. A discussion of the relevance of experimental results obtained for the Mo(CO)(6)e for CO adsorption on metal surfaces is presented.

Are peripheral populations special? Congruent patterns in two butterfly species2009In: Ecography, ISSN 0906-7590, E-ISSN 1600-0587, Vol. 32, no 4, p. 591-600Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Populations at range margins may be genetically different from more central ones for a number of mutually non-exclusive reasons. Specific selection pressures may operate in environments that are more marginal for the species. Genetic drift may also have a strong effect in these populations if they are small, isolated and/or have experienced significant bottlenecks during the colonisation phase. The question if peripheral populations are special, and if yes then how and why, is of obvious relevance for speciation theory, as well as for conservation biology. To evaluate the uniqueness of populations at range margins and the influence of gene flow and selection, we performed a morphometric study of two grassland butterfly species: from Swedish populations that are peripheral and isolated from the main area of the species distributions and from populations in the Baltic states that are peripheral but connected to the main area of the species distributions. These samples were compared to those from central parts of the species distributions. The isolated populations in both species differed consistently from both peripheral and central populations in their wing size and shape. We interpret this as a result of selection caused by differences in population structure in these isolated locations, presumably favoring different dispersal propensity of these butterflies. Alternative explanations based on colonisation history, latitudinal effects, inbreeding or phenotypic plasticity appear less plausible. As a contrast, the much weaker and seemingly random amongregion differences in wing patterns are more likely to be ascribed to weaker selection pressures allowing genetic drift to be influential. In conclusion, both morphological data and results from neutral genetic markers in earlier studies of the same system provide congruent evidence of both adaptation and genetic drift in the isolated Swedish populations of both species.

Butterflies of European islands: the implications of the geography and ecology of rarity and endemicity for conservation2008In: Journal of Insect Conservation, ISSN 1366-638X, E-ISSN 1572-9753, Vol. 12, no 3-4, p. 205-236Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Depending on their faunal content islands can function as important ‘vehicles’ for conservation. In this study, we examine data on 440 butterfly species over 564 European islands in 10 island groups. To determine the status of the butterfly fauna, we have adopted two approaches, island-focused and species-focused, examined using principal components analysis and regression modelling.

In the former, we relate species richness, rarity and endemicity to island geography (area, elevation, isolation and location in latitude and longitude); in the latter, species occurrence on islands is examined in relation to distribution, range, range boundaries, and altitudinal limits on the continent as well as species’ ecology (number of"/> host plants) and morphology (wing expanse). Species on islands are also assessed for their status on the continental mainland, their distributional dynamics (extinctions, distribution changes) and conservation status (Red Data Book, European Habitat Directive, Species of European Conservation Concern and Bern Convention listing.

Unexpectedly, we find that a large fraction of the European butterfly species is found on the islands (63.4%; 59% on small islands) comprising some 6.2% of the land area of Europe. Although species occurring on the islands tend, on the whole, to have lower conservation status and are not declining over Europe, 45 species are endemics restricted to the islands. Species richness shows only a weak locational pattern and is related as expected to isolation from the continental source and island area; but, both rarity and endemicity have distinctive geographical bias to southern Europe, on islands now under increasing pressure from climate change and increasingly intensive human exploitation. The vulnerability of species on islands is emphasised in the relationship of island occurrence (% occurrence and presence/absence of species on any island) with continental distributions. A large proportion of the variation (84%) is accounted by continental distribution, the southern range limit and lower altitudinal limit. Most species (69%) occur on very few islands (\5%). In view of ongoing species dynamics on islands, migrations and extinctions of species, island repositories of species depend in large part on conservation of butterflies at continental sources. The unique faunas and rare species on islands also depend on appropriate concern being given to the island faunas. Conservation of European islands is thus a two-way process, sustaining sources and conserving island refuges. Residuals from the regressions (islands with more or fewer species, rare and endemic species; species occurring more or less frequently than expected on islands) provide warning signals of regions and islands deserving immediate attention.

Food supply and external cues limit the clutch size and hatchability in the White Stork Ciconia ciconia2008In: Acta Ornithologica, ISSN 0001-6454, E-ISSN 1734-8471, Vol. 43, no 2, p. 145-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Clutch size is an important life history trait and factors such as nest predation and food availability can both be of crucial importance for its variation in nature. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of extra food on clutch size, laying date and hatching success in the White stork Ciconia ciconia. Three different colonies of White stork were studied over a three-year period where there was difference in both food availability and precipitation. This study demonstrated that an extra food supply during the pre-laying period had a positive effect on clutch size - nests with extra food had a larger clutch size. There was also an advance in laying date and a higher hatching success in nests with access to extra food. In addition to food supply, clutch size was independently affected by rainfall, which suggests that parents additionally also were sensitive to other external cues than to the extra food. Furthermore, this study also suggests that an extra food during the incubation period could probably help the parents to solve the conflict between incubation behaviour and minimizing the time off the nest, i.e. increasing nest attentiveness in nests with extra food.

Prospective teachers’ initial conceptions about pupils’ understanding of science and mathematics2008In: European Journal of Teacher Education, ISSN 0261-9768, E-ISSN 1469-5928, Vol. 31, no 3, p. 257-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Earlier reports have shown that prospective teachers' conceptions about teaching science to a high degree are resistant and do not change substantially during the teacher-training programme. In our investigation we elucidate the prospective teachers' initial conceptions about pupils' understanding of science and mathematics. We applied 'The Lesson Preparation Method' and used a phenomenographic approach in order to reveal the range of conceptions that the prospective teachers hold. A third of the prospective teachers did not consider pupils' conceptions when planning lessons. The rest of the 32 participants expressed awareness; some of the prospective teachers even referred to subject-specific teaching experience. Also regarding the prospective teachers' conceptions about pupils' knowledge and beliefs, as well as about pupils' difficulties, there was a significant diversity. By raising these issues about pedagogical content knowledge the prospective teachers' conceptions can be extended and developed during the education.

Lärarstuderandes inställning till de naturorienterande ämnena2009Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
