Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 is an autoimmune chronic disease where it places high demands on self-care. Adherence to self-care has been shown to be worse in young adults, than in other age groups. This can lead to serious complications both in the short term and in the long term. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of self-care in young adults with Diabetes Mellitus Type 1. Method: The study was done as a descriptive literature based on 10 qualitative articles and analyzed based on Evans model. Main Result: External and internal aspects that had an impact on young adults' experiences of self-care in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 could be identified. External aspects of significance were lack of knowledge in society, support from the environment and technical aids. The identified internal aspects were the will to fit in and be normal, the will to take responsibility and deal with daily life, difficulties in finding motivation for self-care and the importance of achieving acceptance towards one's illness. Conclusion: In this thesis, external and internal aspects were identified that could influence young adults' experiences of self-care in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1. The results could be helpful for nurses to achieve a deeper understanding of young adults with the illness and thus facilitate individualized care.
