Abstract [sv]

Handledare: Annika Lake

Datum: 2022 - Januari

Abstract [en]

Title: Sustainability reporting - A quantitative study about sustainability reporting quality and how it’s affected by mandatory sustainability reporting and other factors.

Level: Bachelor thesis in Business AdministrationAuthor: Felix Nyberg and Yad KakaminSupervisor: Annika Lake

Date: 2022 - January

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate how different factors affect the quality of sustainability reporting in Swedish companies.

Method: The study has a deductive approach in which hypotheses are tested through the quantitative collection of data about companies and their sustainability reporting using Eikon. To assess the quality of the sustainability reports an assessment matrix based on GRI: s framework and previous studies was used. A regression analysis was then used to examine the relationship between mandatory reporting, company visibility, board gender diversity and sustainability reporting quality. Control variables were also used, these include company size, profitability, and environmentally sensitive industries. The study was limited to companies on the Large Cap with their headquarters in Sweden that were also subject to the mandatory sustainability reporting regulation during the year 2017, this gave a sample of 72 companies.

Result and Conclusions: The result of the study showed a positive relationship between mandatory reporting, company visibility, board gender diversity and sustainability reporting quality. Therefore, all the study’s hypotheses were confirmed, the board's gender diversity showed the biggest impact on quality. When it came to the control variables this study could not, contrary to previous research, conclude profitability’s positive impact on quality. This is theorized to be caused by the negative impact of Covid-19 on the profitability of companies.

Contribution of the thesis: This study contributes to increasing understanding about mandatory sustainability reporting impact on quality, as well as answering calls from previous studies about conducting studies in different countries.

Suggestions for future research: The result of the study shows that there is still a need for studies to examine which factors affect quality in sustainability reporting. There is also a need for further research and development into company visibility and its impact on quality.

Key words: Sustainability reporting, Deciding factors, Reporting quality, Mandatory reporting, Global Reporting Initiative, Information asymmetry.
