Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Network-RTK is a common method for measuring coordinates with centimetre level positioning uncertainties. In Sweden, Lantmäteriet has a national service, SWEPOS network-RTK, which currently uses signals from three different global satellite systems. A project is currently underway to develop the service so that a fourth satellite system can also be used, the Chinese BeiDou. This study examined how the quality of measurement in measurement environments of varying difficulty is affected when BeiDou is included in the network-RTK service by measuring at two reference points in a test network set up specifically for Lantmäteriet's BeiDou project.

Measurements were performed with three different cut off-angles of 15°, 30° and 40° to simulate different measurement environments. They were also performed with four different combinations of the global satellite systems. In one combination GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BeiDou were used, in the next BeiDou was excluded and only GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO were used. In the third case, only BeiDou was used for measurement and in the fourth only GPS. Tests with these satellite combinations and different elevation limits would give a good understanding of the impact BeiDou has on the quality of measurements with all four systems and what measurement quality only BeiDou provides compared to the well-established GPS. An improvement of the network-RTK service in especially difficult measurement environments would simplify many measurement assignments in, for example, the forest and construction industries.

The results of the study showed that BeiDou satellites can help improve the measurement quality in the SWEPOS network-RTK service, especially in the most difficult measurement environment that was simulated with a 40° cut off-angle. However, these are small improvements of approximately one millimetre horizontally and with slightly larger differences vertically. Measurements with several satellite systems also resulted in more useful observations when BeiDou was included in the satellite combinations and the time required to obtain a fixed solution was reduced by a few seconds.

The measurement quality achieved with only BeiDou was comparable to GPS horizontally, and slightly better vertically. However, measurement with only BeiDou resulted in fewer useful observations than with GPS, especially in difficult measurement environments and the time required for fixed solutions was significantly longer with BeiDou than GPS.
