Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The textile industry is one of the most climate-impacting sectors globally, with an extensive use of water and chemicals. The increased production and consumption of clothing has resulted in a global increase in textile waste, which is often incinerated or ends up in landfills. This type of waste management goes against the EU's goal of circular material flows. In order to counteract these effects and promote the recycling and reuse of textiles, a law will be introduced from 1 January 2025 that requires textile waste to be separated and stored separately from other waste. The responsibility for all handling of municipal waste lies with the municipalities, but Dala Vatten och Avfall AB (DVA) has not received any assignment from the owner municipalities Gagnef, Leksand, Rättvik and Vansbro to expand the collection that is currently carried out in collaboration with Human Bridge. This results in the 12 kilos of textiles per person being missorted in the residual waste and in the combustible container at the recycling centers continuing to be missorted. The purpose of the report is to reduce the amount of textile waste that ends up in residual waste and to increase the proportion of sorted textile waste from households in the municipalities where DVA operates. The goal is to formulate recommendations that lead to an increased collection of household textile waste. A case study was done, and the data collection consisted of a combination of literature research, site visits and personal communication with actors involved in textile collection in the municipalities of Gagnef, Leksand, Rättvik and Vansbro. The analysis carried out identified challenges such as geographical distances, the importance of education and communication and the complexity of the textile material which means that the collection methods are important to ensure that the value in the material is retained. Regarding to these and to each municipality's specific characteristics and conditions, the conclusion could be drawn that a combination of different collection methods and cooperation from both the residents, the waste company and the charities can lead to a reduction of textile waste that ends up as residual waste in these municipalities. In the long run, this can contribute to a more sustainable textile industry.
