Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The goal of this study was to investigate how relational factors could be understood in relation to two womens’ entering, upholding and exiting from Islamist extremism and right-wing extremism. Similarities and differences were also researched. As a theoretical standpoint, Akers Social Learning Theory was chosen. Two cases, with regards to two women, got the attention of the research, one case for each ideological group. The data consisted of the womens’ own words regarding belonging to these circles and were collected through biographies and media sources. A reflexive thematic analysis was applied to the material and the results pointed to three identical themes for both cases; spreading and receiving of ideological messages; family as enabler and protective force and; outgroup individuals as important influences. A difference was noticed in that the Islamist extremist entering occurred relatively quickly and was based in part upon attraction. The right-wing extremist entering on the other hand seemed to be a slower process and was based in part upon confirmations in relation to anger towards the system.
