Abstract [en]

In early 2022, the Estonian government requested that the Estonian Transport Administration start the process of designing and procuring a new vessel for the coastal ferry operating between the large Estonian islands Hiiumaa and Saaremaa as well as the mainland. This chapter presents the alternatives studied for the energy source for the vessel, the evaluation process and the final solution taken as the basis of the ferry. The plug-in hybrid system was the one that received the highest rating in the analysis. The variety of fuels that can be used within this system is extensive, and regardless of the research and development that may take place in the years to come, the shipping industry will continue decarbonisation. However, due to the uncertainty of future development, the vessel will run on both batteries and fuel cells. It will use green fuel, compressed hydrogen, and renewable shore electric charging. In addition, it has internal combustion engines as a backup. The new ferry will be ordered in the beginning of 2024.
