Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was globally a growing problem and is classified in Sweden as a public health threat. MRSA could cause infections in various parts of the body and can also show symptoms free of symptoms. The transmission occurs via contact. To prevent the spread of MRSA, basic hygiene routines are necessary. Aim: To describe the experiences of individuals who was carrying MRSA and their experiences with the healthcare system’s response. Method: The study was a descriptive literature review based on 10 scientific articles from Pubmed and Cinahl that have been reviewed and quality assessed. Main results: Feelings about being diagnosed with MRSA varied. The majority reported a significant emotional impact on their lives, while others were not affected by the diagnosis at all. Many felt there was a lack of knowledge within the healthcare system and that staff had a more unprofessional attitude towards MRSA carriers, which negatively affected their treatment. The individuals felt they received inadequate information from healthcare personnel. Not everyone felt that the care was lacking; some found the care to be professional and helpful. Many experienced feelings of frustration, loneliness, fear, and trauma during isolation, while others viewed the isolation as a positive experience. Conclusion: The healthcare staff's inadequate knowledge led to responses that were perceived as unprofessional, negatively impacting the quality of care and causing MRSA carriers to feel stigmatized. It is essential that healthcare personnel are given the opportunity for knowledge and skills development. This is necessary for them to provide MRSA carriers with adequate support and information about MRSA, its transmission routes, and basic hygiene practices to foster a sense of safety.
