Bakgrund: Vård i livets slutskede grundar sig på palliativ vård där lindra lidande och främja en god död är centralt. Många människor är i behov av palliativ vård och detta beräknas öka markant de kommande åren. Utveckling av palliativ vård har utvecklats och möjliggjort att många kan välja vart de vill få vård i livets slutskede. Att vårdas i hemmet kan främja trygghet och minska oro, vilket kan skapa meningsfullhet. Hemmamiljön är en komplex arbetsplats med många förekommande utmaningar som ställer höga krav på patientsäkerhet och etiska förhållningssätt. Sjuksköterskans roll av vård i livets slutskede består av att bland annat ge närståendestöd samt tillgodose patientens önskemål ur en personcentrerad vård.

Syftet: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter vid vård i livets slutskede i hemmet. 

Metod: En litteraturstudie med en beskrivande design baserad på 12 inkluderade kvalitativa originalstudier. 

Huvudresultat: Huvudresultatet visar att en återkommande erfarenhet bland sjuksköterskorna var att emotionell påfrestning uppstod och olika hanteringsstrategier användes i arbetet för att bemöta dessa utmaningar. Stöd till anhöriga var en stor del av arbetet och majoriteten ansåg anhöriga som en resurs. Kunskapsbrist förelåg och ytterligare utbildning eftersträvades. 

Slutsats: Sjuksköterskorna beskrev vård i livets slutskede utmanande där emotionell belastning, närståendestöd samt kunskapsbrist var centralt. Ytterligare utbildning eftersträvades för att stärka sjuksköterskornas erfarenhet samt ökad kunskap kring vård i livet slutskede. 

Background: End-of-life care is based within palliative care, focusing on alleviating suffering and promoting a dignified death. Many people are in need of palliative care and this is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. The development of palliative care has allowed many patients the option to choose where they wish to receive end-of-life care, with home care being a preferred option due to the safe environment that can feel familiar to the patient and can often reduces anxiety. However, end-of-life care in the home involves complex challenges requiring high demands of patient safety and an ethical approach. The nurse’s role in end-of-life care at home includes providing support for relatives and meeting the patients' needs and wishes where person-centered care is important. This places high demands on the nurse's ability to provide compassionate and personalized care and manage the challenges with end-of-life care at home.  

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experience of end-of-life care at home. 

Method: A literature review with a descriptive design based on 12 qualitative studies.  

Results: The main findings reveal that common experience among nurses was emotional strain while providing end-of-life care and used various coping strategies to manage these challenges, supporting relatives was a significant part of the care process with most nurses considering relatives as a valuable resource. However, lack of knowledge was identified and the nurses desired further education.  

Conclusion: Nurses found end-of-life care to be demanding in emotional strain, support for relatives and the lack of knowledge as common challenges in the context. They expressed the need for further education in end-of-life care.
