Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examined how individuals and groups in social vulnerability were portrayed in the course literature for the social work program at the University of Gävle. Through a discourse analysis of the books Social Exclusion and Intersectionality in Social Work, the study utilised Boréus (2022) and Winther Jørgensen and Phillips (2000) and identified underlying discourses and assumptions. Findings revealed that these portrayals were characterised by a "us vs. them" perspective, where societal actors were ascribed excluding agency through discipline, norms, and categories. Individuals were often depicted as passive objects rather than active participants, limiting their perceived ability to affect their own situations. This language choice reinforced the dichotomy and obscured broader issues, created a perceived conflict between the ”norm-bearing middle class” and marginalised groups. The study underscored the need for reflexivity in social work to critically evaluate how language and discourses shape professional practice and societal attitudes.
