Abstract [en]

Social media is gaining increased use among adolescents, the following study will address the effects of social media amongst the youth. The purpose of this study is to explore how norms and values on social media affect adolescents' perceptions, behaviors and the risk of adopting a criminal lifestyle. Through a literature study in which eight articles were selected from two databases (Scopus and Hig Discovery) the following study was able to give a summary of the current evidence which were in turn studied and analyzed through two theories, norm theory and systems theory. The study reveals three main factors that play a crucial role regarding how adolescents are affected by social media usage, family factors, upbringing conditions, and the normalization of deviant behaviors. These are factors that can make young people more susceptible to the influence of social media and the various risk behaviors that are glorified.
