Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In 2019, the first case of the viral disease COVID-19 was discovered, which came to spread worldwide. The spread resulted in a pandemic that lasted until the year 2023 when the WHO no longer assessed the disease as an international health hazard. During the specified time period, visiting restrictions were introduced in the health care system, which meant that relatives were restricted from physically visiting their sick family members in intensive care units. Aim: To describe relatives' experience of not being allowed to attend intensive care units due to visiting restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive literature study, based on original studies with a qualitative approach. Finding: The result was based on 13 original studies, presenting three main themes with underlying subthemes: 1) The challenges of communication - Encountering and understanding in the event of limited communication opportunities and Lack of routines and the feeling of uncertainty; 2) Physical and mental suffering - Not being able to be present and feel about having a sick loved one and To handle and adapt to the ongoing situation; 3) Participation and relationships at a distance - Limited participation and responsibility at a distance and Gratitude and appreciation towards the healthcare staff. Conclusion: This study showed that relatives' during the pandemic were faced with major communication challenges, which created uncertainty and frustration with the limited participation. Relatives felt that their natural role as support persons was weakened. Despite these challenges, the majority of studies showed a common appreciation for the empathy and humanity of the healthcare staff.
