Abstract [sv]

Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur ledare involverar känslor i sitt ledarskap samt hur det reflekteras i deras beslutsfattande. Därtill är studien inriktad på att utforska eventuella skillnader mellan Generation X och Y. 

Metod: Examensarbetet utgörs av en kvalitativ metod och består av semistrukturerade intervjuer med tio deltagare som alla är chef inom den offentliga sektorn. Samtliga intervjuer har spelats in, transkriberats och analyserats. Resultatet av detta presenteras och analyseras i empirin.     

Resultat och slutsats: Studien har visat att chefer involverar känslor i beslutsfattande och att det tillåts ta plats men i varierande begränsning och genom varierande strategier. Vi sammanfattar att det finns generationsskillnader i åsikter kring självmotivation och graden av känslomässig transparens. En viktig insikt är att erfarenhet kan spela roll när det kommer till beslutsfattande och att strategier kan hjälpa ledare att hantera sina känslor.  

Examensarbetets bidrag: Denna studie har bidragit till en ökad förståelse för hur ledare involverar känslor i sitt ledarskap och beslutsfattande. Både likheter och skillnader mellan ledare i olika generationer har påvisats, vilket framgår i empirin och analysen.   

Förslag till fortsatt forskning: Med hjälp av en kvalitativ metod undersöka vilket sätt chefers ledarskap och beslutsfattande påverkas av motivation eller känslomässig transparens, främst med avseende på chefer från Generation X och Y. Detta eftersom det finns obesvarade skillnader mellan dessa generationer vad gäller både motivation samt graden av känslomässig transparens, både individuellt och i grupp. 

Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate how leaders involve emotions in their leadership and how this is reflected in their decision-making. Furthermore, the study aims to explore possible differences between Generation X and Y. 

Method: The study is conducted through a qualitative method and consists of semi-structured interviews with ten participants, all of whom are managers in the public sector. All interviews have been recorded, transcribed and analyzed. The results of this are presented and analyzed in the empirical study.  

Results and conclusions: This study has shown that managers involve emotions in decision-making and that it is allowed to take place but in varying limitations and through varying strategies. We have concluded that there are generational differences in opinions regarding self-motivation and the degree of emotional transparency. An important insight is that experience can play a role when it comes to decision-making and that strategies can help leaders manage their emotions.  

Contribution of the thesis: This study has contributed to an increased understanding of how leaders involve emotions in their leadership and decision-making. Both similarities and differences between leaders in different generations have been demonstrated, as revealed by the empirical evidence and analysis.  

Suggestions for future research: Investigate through a qualitative method how managers' leadership and decision-making are affected by motivation or emotional transparency, primarily with regard to managers in Generation X and Y. This is relevant due to unanswered differences between these generations when it comes to both motivation and the degree of emotional transparency, both individually and in groups.
