Background: Palliative care is provided to patients at end of life with the aim of preventing and/or alleviating suffering and improving quality of life when cure is no longer possible. It focuses on providing comprehensive care that supports the holistic needs of patients and their families, including assessment and treatment of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Aim: The aim of this literature study is to describe nurses’ experience of providing palliative care to patients. Method: This study is a descriptive literature review based on thirteen scientific articles retrieved from the database PubMed, of which twelve articles were qualitative and one being a mixed method study. This study uses Popenoe, L-Eklöf, Stenwall and Jervaeus' systematic data analysis method. Main results: The data analysis of the thirteen articles resulted in four main categories and eleven subcategories that answered the aim of this study. The four main categories were: Lack of skill, resources and organisational problems, Negative effects on nurses’ wellbeing and personal lives, Providing palliative care; Fulfilling and gratifying, and Coping strategies used to ease provision of palliative care.  Conclusions: Nurses reported that they could not provide palliative care of the highest quality due to, among other things, shortcomings in the organisation, their own lack of knowledge, staff-shortages, and the patient's relatives' non-compliance. The nurses believed that further training is required to be able to fill the knowledge gap and more staff, resources and support is needed to be able to cover the workload and raise the quality of care for the patient.

Bakgrund: Palliativ vård ges till patienter i livets slutskede med syftet att förebygga och/eller lindra lidande samt förbättra livskvalitet när bot är inte längre möjligt.  Den fokuserar på att ge en omfattande vård som stödjer de holistiska behoven hos patienter och deras anhöriga bland annat bedömning och behandling av fysiska, emotionella och andliga mående. Syftet: Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelse av att ge palliativ vård till patienter. Metod: En beskrivande litteraturstudie som baserades på tretton vetenskapliga artiklar hämtade från databasen PubMed, varav tolv var kvalitativa och en med en mixad metod. Denna studie används sig av Popenoe, L-Eklöf, Stenwall och Jervaeus’ systematisk dataanalysmetod. Huvudresultat: Analysen av artiklarna resulterade i fyra huvudkategorier och elva subkategorier som besvarade syftet. Dessa fyra huvudkategorier var; Brist på kompetens, resurser och organisatoriska problem, Negativa effekter på sjuksköterskors välbefinnande och privatliv, Att ge palliativ vård; Tillfredsställande och glädjande, och Copingstrategier som används för att underlätta negativa upplevelser från att ge palliativ vård. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor uppgav att de inte kunde ge palliativ vård av högsta kvalitet som de bör på grund av bland annat brister i verksamheten, deras egen kunskapsbrist, personalbrist, samt patientens anhörigas non-compliance (oföljsamhet). De ansåg att ytterligare utbildning krävs för att kunna förbättra kunskapsluckan och mera resurser, stöd samt personal behövs för att kunna täcka arbetsbelastningen och höja vårdkvalitén för patienten.
