Abstract [en]
Remote work has become a permanent feature of modern working life. While its effects on employees have been widely studied, the impact on managers remains underexplored. In the municipal sector, managers face specific challenges, including maintaining service quality, handling increased stress, and managing social isolation and changing leadership demands.AimThis study aims to explore how managers in municipal operations perceive their health and well-being when leading employees who work remotely.MethodA qualitative design with an inductive approach was used. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten municipal managers. The material was transcribed and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results and ConclusionRemote work was found to have both positive and negative effects on managers’ well-being. On the positive side, participants reported greater flexibility, autonomy, and improved work-life balance. On the negative side, they experienced difficulty maintaining boundaries, feelings of isolation, and the need for adapted digital leadership. Organizational support and individual strategies, such as self-reflection and continuous development, were vital for coping with these challenges. The study emphasizes the importance of balancing demands, control, and support to promote sustainable leadership in remote settings.
