Evaluate the current status and the related factors ofsleep quality in COPD patients: A descriptive review

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide; however, sleep quality is frequently underestimated, and its assessment has not yet become routine clinical practice. To offer more targeted care, it is essential to comprehend the status of sleep quality among COPD patients and the factors that influence it.Aim: The aim of the review was to describe the current situation of sleep quality in patients with COPD, and explore the related factors of decreased sleep quality in patients with COPD.Design: A descriptive literature review that includes research using quantitative methods.Methods: The studies were retrieved from PubMed via Medline based on inclusion criteria. The authors compared the results of the included articles and summarized the categorizes.Results: Ten quantitative articles described the status quo of sleep quality in COPD patients and its influencing factors, categorized into: (1) demographic aspects, (2) disease aspects, (3) drug aspects, and (4) psychosocial aspects. The prevalence of sleep disorders in COPD patients exceeded the global average.Conclusion: The prevalence of sleep disorders in COPD patients range from 42%-90%,. Disease severity, comorbidities and inhaled glucocorticoids significantly impact sleep. Psychosocial factors like anxiety, depression, and lack of social support worsen sleep problems. Nurses should deliver personalized care, eg. optimal oxygen therapy, breathing training, and psychological support.
