Abstract [sv]

Titel: ESG-bluffen?

Handledare: Jan Svanberg

Datum: 2025 - juni

Abstract [en]

Title: The ESG Illusion: When Controversies and Company Size Define Sustainability

Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration

Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the extent to which companies’ Social pillar scores (S-scores), representing the social dimension of ESG ratings, reflect actual social sustainability performance, or whether the scores rather capture firm size and reporting capacity. The study particularly focuses on the relationship between social controversies, ESG reporting resources, firm size and S-scores.

Method: The study is grounded in a positivist paradigm and employs a quantitative, longitudinal research design. Empirical data were collected from Refinitiv Eikon and include 1,955 publicly listed companies worldwide during the period 2020–2024. Regression analyses are used to test five hypotheses based on theoretical perspectives such as legitimacy theory and slack resource theory.

Results and conclusions: The results show that firm size and reporting resources have a strong positive relationship with S-scores, while social controversies do not show a consistent negative effect. In some cases, they even correlate with higher scores the following year. This suggests that ESG ratings, particularly the social dimension, are, to some extent, influenced by legitimacy strategies rather than actual performance.

Contribution of the thesis: This study problematizes the reliability of ESG ratings and provides empirical evidence that reporting capacity and firm size influence social ESG scores. This challenges the assumption that high ESG scores automatically indicate strong sustainability performance.

Suggestions for future research: Future studies should compare ESG rating providers, qualitatively analyze the impact of controversies, and explore interactions between the ESG dimensions.
