Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about how teachers experience and describe their supportive work with students who have reading and writing difficulties in grades 1–3. The study focuses on the strategies teachers use, how they identify difficulties, and the challenges they encounter in their work. Through a qualitative method, ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with certified teachers who have experience with students facing these difficulties. The collected material is analyzed using thematic analysis, and the theoretical framework is based on the sociocultural perspective. The results show that teachers use several different strategies, such as repeated reading, phonological training, the use of reading lists, and visual aids, to support the students. Difficulties are identified by teachers noticing early signs as well as through assessments using observations and evaluation tools. Among the biggest challenges reported are lack of resources and time, as well as low motivation among the students. Furthermore, difficulties arise in determining whether the problems are due to actual reading and writing difficulties or other underlying causes.
