Abstract [sv]

Handledare: Jan Svanberg

Datum: 2025 - juni

Title: International accounting standards and their impact on ESG reporting

Purpose: Sustainability reporting varies depending on where in the world a companyoperates. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) is part of sustainability reporting and previous studies have shown that it is less comprehensive in countries such as the United States, while it is mandatory in Europe. As a result, ESG reporting differs between countries. Our aim is to compare the differences in reporting standards and whether they translate into actual differences in reporting on the social dimension of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) within Europe and the US. This study was undertaken in the absence of previous research that systematically compares  differences in the social dimensions of ESG reporting and the impact of accounting standards within European and US companies.

Method:The study applies a quantitative method and a deductive approach to examine non-financial information from European and the United States. It is based solely on secondary data from companies with an ESG score higher than 1/100 in the year 2023. For data collection, we chose to use the Refinitiv Eikon database and the SASB (2024) website. The total population comprises 1935 publicly traded companies in the US and Europe that report according to either GRI or SASB. Furthermore, the data was analyzed using SPSS and presented through regression analysis and correlation analyses.

Results & Conclusion:There are real differences in reporting on the social dimension of ESG reporting when applying GRI and SASB. Companies in Europe are more likely to report information related to human rights, while companies in the US are more likely to report on information related to corporate culture and community engagement.

Contribution: The differences previously identified between accounting standards have been further analyzed, confirming that there are real differences in the application of GRI and SASB, as well as the reporting of ESG:s social dimensions in Europe and the United States.

Continued research: Study how companies choose to report when changing accounting standards, to see if there are actual differences in reporting depending on the accounting standard used. Also to study the GRI and SASB accounting standards in the event of a change in regulations, to see whether this contributes to more similar reporting or whether there are greater differences than those shown in this study.
