Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore how teachers describe the use of assisted reading (lyssneläsning) in grades 4–6, as well as to contribute to a deeper understanding of teachers' perceptions regarding how this method influences students' reading development. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with nine informants. The theoretical framework of the study is based on the sociocultural perspective and Dual Coding Theory. The results show that teachers use assisted reading as a support to promote students’ reading development, motivation, and concentration. The method is also described as an accommodation for students in need of special support. Benefits that are emphasized in this study include enabling students to access texts beyond their independent reading level and contributing to a broader vocabulary. Disadvantages mentioned include that some students may use the method as a shortcut, hindering the development of independent reading skills, and that it may reduce concentration and motivation for certain students. The teachers emphasize that a conscious didactic choice is crucial for assisted reading to positively impact students’ reading development.
