Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Height information relative to a reference surface is fundamental and essential in many applications in geodesy and engineering. In Sweden normal heights are used, which are related to height anomalies and the quasigeoid. The KTH method is often applied for quasigeoid determination. In the first step of applying this method, a Remove-Interpolate-Restore (RIR)-method is used for gridding of the surface gravity anomalies. An important factor in this process is the density distribution of the topographic masses. Usually, the standard density value 2,67 g/cm3 is employed.

The effect of the density distribution of the topographic masses on the (quasi)geoid has previously been investigated in some other countries, but not specifically in Sweden, making it a relevant subject for this study. This thesis investigates how the use of topographic density models affects RIR interpolation of gravity anomalies in quasigeoid determination by the KTH method in Sweden. Three research questions are answered: How is the standard uncertainty of the RIR interpolated surface gravity anomalies affected by using density models? How does the use of density models affect the result and standard uncertainty in quasigeoid determination? How should density models be applied (what formula) when calculating RTM anomalies (Residual Terrain Model anomalies)?

Two density models were created: one based on geological data from the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU) and a slightly modified version of the UNB_TopoDensT model. In the RIR interpolating scheme, the density models were used to calculate the RTM effect using a formula consisting of two terms, one Bouguer term using the topographic density of the computation point and one terrain correction term with either standard or varying density. Least squares collocation was used to interpolate the gravity anomalies, and the KTH method was applied to determine the quasigeoid. Comparisons were finally made relative to GNSS/levelling height anomalies.

The use of density models resulted in differences with standard deviations up to 0,73 mGal and 4,4 mm for the RIR interpolated gravity anomalies and the height anomalies, respectively, for the most realistic density model, the SGU-model. It was shown that in cases where a density model is used for the calculation of RTM anomalies, the terrain correction cannot be approximated by using standard density in the whole of Sweden. Furthermore, it was evident, despite a certain sensitivity to density variation, that the density models do not result in differences of significant magnitude at the threshold value 5 mm for the final quasigeoid. It is therefore concluded that for the time being it is sufficient to use the standard density in quasigeoid determination in Sweden.
