Datum: 2025 - Juni

Abstract
Title: Adaptive selling: A quantitative study of the relationships between cognitive anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and personality traits among Swedish real estate agents

Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between adaptive selling, cognitive anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. In addition, it investigates which personality traits are associated with adaptive selling and whether perseverance can be considered a protective resource.
Method: This thesis was conducted using a quantitative research approach through a survey design. The questionnaire was designed in Google Forms and it was answered by 101 registered real estate agents in Sweden. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis with the support of the statistical software JASP.
Results and conclusions: The results showed that adaptive selling has a negative correlation with cognitive anxiety and a positive correlation with perseverance. Furthermore, it showed that perseverance was found to have a negative association with cognitive anxiety and no significant relationship with emotional exhaustion. Additionally, cognitive anxiety presented a strong positive correlation with emotional exhaustion. In addition, no significant relationship was found between adaptive selling and emotional exhaustion. Among the Big Five personality traits, agreeableness was the only trait significantly related to adaptive selling and the correlation was positive. The conclusion is that adaptive selling does not lead to increased cognitive anxiety. On the other hand, high cognitive anxiety may lead to emotional exhaustion. Perseverance can be considered a protective resource against cognitive anxiety and individuals with the personality traits of agreeableness tend to be more adaptive in their sales strategies.
Contribution of the thesis: Office managers and franchise owners can use the findings to better understand the importance of supporting employees experiencing cognitive anxiety before it develops into emotional exhaustion. The study also contributes to knowledge on how adaptive selling influences real estate agents mental health. Additionally, the study offers insights into the protective role of perseverance which became evident as a valuable personal resource.
Suggestions for future research: It would be valuable to conduct a similar study using a qualitative approach, which could deepen the understanding of how real estate agents themselves experience the constant need to adapt to each client’s need and situation.
