Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Aim: The growing societal focus on sustainability has led companies to increasingly report their ESG performance. In the industrial sector, where environmental impact is significant, demands from external stakeholders are rising. At the same time, there is uncertainty as to whether institutional investors actually consider ESG ratings in their decision-making. The purpose of this study is to examine how ESG ratings covary with institutional ownership in the Swedish industrial sector, measured by both the number of institutional investors and their ownership share.

Method: The study adopts a quantitative and deductive approach. Secondary data was collected from Refinitiv Eikon and includes 49 Swedish industrial firms for the year 2025. The data was analyzed in JASP using descriptive statistics, correlation tests, and multiple linear regression.

Result and conclusions: The analysis reveals a statistically significant positive relationship between ESG ratings and the number of institutional investors, but no significant relationship with ownership share. This suggests that ESG primarily influences the breadth – not the depth – of institutional ownership. Furthermore, the social dimension (S) is the only ESG component showing statistical significance, indicating that factors such as labor conditions and human rights weigh heaviest in investment decisions.

Contributions of the thesis: The study provides deeper insights into how ESG components affect institutional ownership in a sector with high sustainability exposure. By disaggregating ESG into its three dimensions, the study highlights which aspects investors value most in practice.

Suggestions for future research: Future research is encouraged to apply longitudinal designs to capture changes over time, as ESG investments often have long-term effects that cross-sectional studies cannot reflect. It would also be interesting to compare industries with varying ESG relevance and include multiple data providers to examine how differences in ESG ratings impact results. Finally, qualitative studies  such as interviews with investors  are suggested to explore how ESG data is interpreted in practice.
