University of Gävle, Faculty of Education and Business Studies, Department of Humanities.
2025 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how female communication students at the University of Gävle use ChatGPT in their studies. Through qualitative, semi-structured interviews with five female students, their experiences are analyzed based on theories of deep mediatization, convergence culture, and participatory culture. The results indicate that ChatGPT is perceived to fulfill three main functions in the students' academic lives - a time-saving function, a support function, and a relational function. The study shows that ChatGPT has become an integrated and natural part of daily life for the students who participated in the study and that it impacts their sense of independence.

It also highlights that the perception of what constitutes cheating varies depending on how the tool is used, and that the view on cheating is directly correlated to the support that the student needs from ChatGPT in their studies.
