Abstract [sv]

I takt med att cyberhot ökar efterfrågas allt säkrare metoder för lösenordshantering. Denna studie undersöker de kryptografiska hashfunktionerna SHA-512 och Whirlpoolsamt metoden dubbelhashning, där dessa hashfunktioner kombineras. Jämförelserav hashfunktionernas egenskaper genomfördes med hjälp av kvantitativa mätvärden. Mätvärdena som användes var: exekveringstid, kollisionsresistens, avalanche-effekt och motståndskraft mot bruteforce-attacker. Resultatet visade att SHA-512 och Whirlpool hade högst prestandan individuellt, medan den dubbelhashadefunktionen bestående av SHA-512 och Whirlpool uppvisade bäst resultat både vad gäller prestanda vid lösenordshantering och säkerhetsnivå. Studien indikerar att dubbelhashning kan ge ökad säkerhet, men att en detta sker på bekostnad av systemets prestanda.

Abstract [en]

As cyber threats continue to increase, the demand for more secure methods of password management grows. This study examines the cryptographic hash functions SHA-512 and Whirlpool, as well as the method of double hashing, in which these hash functions are combined. The properties of the hash functions were compared using quantitative metrics. The evaluated metrics included execution time, collisionresistance, avalanche effect, and resistance to brute-force attacks. The results showed that SHA-512 and Whirlpool demonstrated the highest individual performance, while the double-hashed combination of SHA-512 and Whirlpool achieved the best results in terms of both password management performance and overall security. The study indicates that double hashing can enhance security, but this comes at the cost of reduced system performance.
