Abstract [en]

This study aimed to explore how and why adolescents from socioeconomically privileged backgrounds become involved in criminal activities, focusing on societal actors’ understandings of risk and protective factors as well as processes of socialization. A qualitative method was employed, based on interviews with eight professionals working in social work, youth services, and the justice system. The findings indicated that high performance pressure, feelings of exclusion, status-seeking, and the influence of popular culture and social media contributed to criminal behavior despite protective conditions. Informants also described how institutions often failed to identify risk behaviors in affluent environments. The discussion highlighted the importance of an intersectional perspective to understand how power structures interact in these contexts. The study concludes that greater awareness within social work is needed regarding youth crime in privileged settings, in order to develop more relevant and effective interventions.
