In December 1976, the colorful Tibetan teacher Lama Ngawang (1929–2011) become the resident lama in a recently founded Tibetan Buddhist centre in Mälarhöjden, Sweden. This chapter examines what happened when this unconventional and charismatic lama, who was born and raised in traditional Tibet, tried to teach people in secular Sweden how to understand and practice Buddhism. Based on interviews, informal conversations, personal experiences, and memories, the chapter describes the challenges Lama Ngawang faced, and the impact he had upon the people who met him during the thirty-five years he spent in Sweden.
