Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how the influencer-owned company Djerf Avenue and its founder Matilda Djerf initially handled the reputational crisis that arose after Aftonbladets investigation of the company’s working conditions in December 2024. The purpose of this study is to analyze which crisis communication strategies that were used and how the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos were used. This study is based on a directed qualitative content analysis of five statements published on Instagram and in the newspaper Aftonbladet, with theoretical roots in Image Repair Theory (IRT) and classic rhetoric. The results show that Matilda Djerf and Djerf Avenue applied all of Benoit’s IRT-strategies, with particular emphasis on reducing offensiveness and corrective actions. The communication was characterized by a strong dominance of pathos, while logos were often absent. Ethos was used to portray Djerf as a responsible and empathetic leader, though it was challenged by shifts in strategy and choices of publication context. Overall, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how influencers and influencer-owned companies manage crises in a media environment were emotional authenticity and strategic communication must be continuously balanced. By examining communication within a company where the brand is closely tied to an individual, the study also highlights how the intertwining of person and organization contributes to the complexity of crisis management.
