Verses from the Periphery : A Scoping Review of How the Potential Relationship Between Gangsta Rap and Deadly Violence Has Been Subscribed in Contemporary Studies (English)
Abstract [en]

In light of statements from societal actors, including police officers and politicians, suggesting a direct connection between gangsta rap and deadly violence, this thesis isconsidered both timely and significant. This scoping review therefore aimed to examine howa potential relationship between gangsta rap and deadly violence has been described inresearch published between 2020–2024. Through an analysis of eleven relevant academicjournals, it was found that the relationship between gangsta rap and deadly violence shouldnot be understood as direct but rather interpreted within the context of broader socioculturalfactors. These factors included structural racism, social and economic societal issues, as wellas the perceived authenticity of both artists and their lyrics. The results could be discussed inrelation to social learning theory. Finally, the study found that the subject would benefit fromfurther research, particularly through quantitative methods.
