Media's power over crime victims : A thematic analysis of how gender is portrayed in Swedish news reporting (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how male and female victims of crime areportrayed in the Swedish media. This was done through a thematic analysis where articlesfrom Swedish newspapers were selected using a purposive sampling method. The resultsshowed that there is a difference in how different victims of crime are portrayed in the media, depending on gender. Women were portrayed through empathetic and personal languagewhich highlighted their innocence and humanity, while men were portrayed more distantly, ascriminals and partly responsible for their fate. However, there were also instances wherewomen were portrayed more anonymously and stripped down and men in a more emotionalway. The study showed that there is a difference in how the media portrays crime victimsdepending on gender, which both reflects and reinforces society's gender norms.
