Youth's drug use : A qualitative study on upper secondary school teachers’ and Social Services’ perspectives in relation to theory and previous research (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Drug offenses, often drug use, are among the most common crimes committed by Swedish youth. The purpose of this study has been to examine perspectives on youth's attitudes towards drugs through interviews with upper secondary school teachers and social workers within the Social Services, the unit for children and youth. It also aimed to examine possible factors related to youth's drug use based on the professionals who work closely with youth. Four qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed through a thematic analysis. The results served to illustrate previous research and theory. The participants described youth's attitudes towards drugs as positive. The main factors that were considered to increase youth's propensity to use drugs was poor family relations, social circles with norm-breaking behaviors, and a lack of conventional activities. Individual aspects such as trauma and neuropsychiatric disabilities, as well as social factors such as pop culture, were also considered key factors. The participants’ perspectives aligned with previous research and chosen theoretical perspectives.
